--The Animal Agriculture Alliance has launched two videos on YouTube, a popular website where almost anyone can share videos. The first Alliance video focuses on the importance of moderation and balance in making dietary choices. It suggests talking to a dietitian or nutritionist about a balanced diet and warns against adopting diets based on political causes or trends. The second video points out that over 90% of America's farms and ranches are family-owned. It also explains farmers and ranchers commitment to their animals, their land and their community.

The videos feature Brad Johnson - who grew up on a ranch and went on to become an actor with credits including Comanche Moon, Crossfire Trail, Flight of the Intruder and Rough Riders. The Alliance's 60-second video on moderation in diet was accepted as part of USDA's MyPyramid Corporate Challenge, an effort to promote healthy, balanced diets and to encourage youth and adults to base their food choices on advice from nutrition experts.

"The Alliance is excited to have been selected as a USDA partner in this campaign and we are pleased to be able to offer these videos to help the public - especially youths and young adults - make responsible dietary choices and better understand American farmers' and ranchers' commitment to people, animals and the environment," said Kay Johnson Smith, Executive Vice President of the Animal Agriculture Alliance. "We are grateful to all those who contributed their time and money towards this project."

It takes time and effort to learn about how the social media work and how they can add to the impact and efficiency of knowledge workers. But to simply partake in the chorus of rejection without seriously exploring the possibilities is, IMHO, irresponsible. In my own explorations of the web and how it can be used to help learning, I have noticed two academic reactions. One is the quality card being played, without examination or research, but with confidence. The other is a collection of the most amazing intellectual explorations of this new media environment. I cite the work of Professor Michael Wesch:

This brief video should be studied by all knowledge workers, especially academics who study and teach communication skills. This video, to my mind, displays the excellent intellectual quality of Wesch's work.

Wesch is an academic, and his work on YouTube can be labelled as good quality because he's an authenticated authority. The quality of his teaching can be seen in his studying the context of his students, (because it's a different era from even 10 years ago):

After I watched this video, I went to Twitter (http://www.commoncraft.com/Twitter) and asked if anyone knew which kind of wiki he was using with his class, as I was intrigued by one aspect of it. The same day Michael Wesch himself answer my question.

The people who question the quality of work avalable on the social media are actually talking about whether the information is accurate and up-to-date. What they are revealing about themselves is that they are neither accurate or up-to-date.

  Sebastião Salgado

  Representante Especial del UNICEF

El fotógrafo brasileño Sebastião Salgado es uno de los reporteros gráficos contemporáneos más respetados del mundo. Salgado, que fue nombrado Representante Especial del UNICEF el 3 de abril de 2001, se ha dedicado a retratar las vidas de los desposeídos del mundo. Esa labor se ha plasmado en diez libros y muchas exposiciones y le ha valido numerosos premios en Europa y el continente americano.

"Deseo que cada persona que entra a una de mis exposiciones sea al salir una personas diferente", comenta el Sr. Salgado. "Creo que toda persona puede ayudar, no necesariamente donando bienes materiales, sino formando parte del debate, y preocupándose por lo que sucede en el mundo".

El Sr. Salgado, de 57 años, se formó como economista e inició su carrera fotográfica en 1973. Su primer libro, Otras Américas, dedicado a los pobres de América Latina, fue publicado en 1986. Tras éste, publicó, ese mismo año, Sahel: el fin del camino, que fue el fruto de 15 meses de colaboración con la organización Médicos sin fronteras durante la larga sequía que castigó a la región septentrional de África.

Entre 1986 y 1992, el nuevo Representante Especial del UNICEF fotografió las actividades de los trabajadores manuales de todo el mundo, y su trabajo tuvo como resultado el libro Workers (Trabajadores), así como una exposición del mismo nombre. Esa empresa monumental sirvió para afianzar su reputación como uno de los más grandes fotógrafos documentales. De 1993 a 1999, el Sr. Salgado se concentró en el fenómeno mundial de los grandes movimientos de personas desplazadas, y ese fue el tema de dos libros publicados en 2000 que fueron mundialmente aclamados, Migrations (Migraciones) y The Children (Niños).

En el prólogo de Migrations, el autor afirma: "Hoy más que nunca, siento la unidad de la raza humana. A pesar de las diferencias de color, lengua, cultura y oportunidades, los sentimientos y reacciones de toda la gente son similares. La gente huye de las guerras para eludir la muerte; migra para mejorar su fortuna; construye nuevas vidas en tierras extrañas, y se adapta a las adversidades extremas...".

El respecto que profesa el Sr. Salgado,que trabaja sólo en blanco y negro, por los sujetos de sus fotografías, así como su empeño por descubrir el significado más profundo de lo que a ellos le sucede, se plasma en imágenes que son testimonios de la dignidad fundamental de todos los seres humanos sin dejar por ello de denunciar que esa dignidad es violada por la guerra, la pobreza y la injusticia.

Desde hace años, el Sr. Salgado ha estado colaborando con los organismos humanitarios internacionales como el UNICEF, la Oficina del Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas para los Refugiados (ACNUR), la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), Médicos sin fronteras, y Amnesty International. Junto a su esposa, Lélia Wanick Salgado, el Representante Especial del UNICEF presta apoyo a un proyecto de reforestación y revitalización comunitaria en el estado brasileño de Minas Gerais.

En septiembre de 2000, con el respaldo de las Naciones Unidas y el UNICEF, el Sr. Salgado exhibió en la Sede de las Naciones Unidas, en Nueva York, 90 retratos de niños desplazados que habían aparecido en su libro The Children (Niños). Esas abrumadoras fotografías son un solemne testimonio de la existencia de 30 millones de personas de todo el mundo, en su mayoría mujeres y niños, que carecen de vivienda permanente.

Today I edited an earlier post on my WordPress teacher blog, which I am trying out as an alternative to Blogger. I like WordPress better for their widgets, tags, categories, and pages. If you host your blog on another server you can have your own domain name and use fancy and free plugins. Anyway, another discovery I made yesterday was that my Macbook not only takes photos, but also shoots video using PhotoBooth. Cool! I was excited to no longer have to upload clips from my camera. I could skip a step.

But then I tried to pst the video, but couldn't access PhotoBooth through WordPress. I then tried to export the video to iPhoto. Eventually this worked but I still couldn't get to it through WordPress. I then exported the video to iMovie and Wordpress said it didn't support that kind of file. Ugh. So I uploaded my clip to GoogleVideo as an unlisted video, meaning it isn't public (in theory), copy and pasted the URL into WordPress and it was instantly up!

The most important thing I learned this morning was to become very familiar with the applications and technology you are using, and how they work together by creating the kinds of things you want to use with children or colleagues. This first hand knowledge and experience is invaluable to teacher librarians.

This video is a clip I had never seen before, special thanks to PB for sending this link my way.  Imagine, if John were around now, and in full-on peace activist mode.  His public outcry of the war in Iraq, and Darfur would be earth shaking.  It would truly be awesome to watch.  It's so funny to see the cyclical nature of history, and how we keep repeating ourselves as a human race.

I was vaguely aware of John Lennon's peace summit in 1969, but was unaware of the video footage.  It looks like there is a relatively new self-published book out there that details Lennon as the activist.

The full details on John Lennon's peace seminar can be found in the book John Lennon: The Activist. In this clip, which was part of a press conference, John talks about censorship of The Beatles' "The Ballad of John and Yoko" single, making records, politicians, the peace movement, and the thoughts of the Beatles on peace in general.

John Lennon began his career as an ordinary pop star who made extraordinary music. He slowly began to evolve as his fame grew and became radicalized through meetings and associations with sixties activists. During this time, John referring to himself as a "revolutionary artist."

The Revolutionary Artist is an examination of Lennon’s forays into activism, his political views, and the music he created during the period. Specific areas of focus include:

- An in-depth look at the 1969 Montreal bed-in, with extensive and wide-ranging interviews
- A previously unreleased transcript of peace seminar Lennon attended at the University of Ottawa
- Discussions between John and Yoko recorded during their Primal Therapy sessions in 1970
- A song-by-song analysis of Lennon’s first three major solo releases, with commentary from John
- Lennon in 1972 running through and offering commentary on all of the songs that he and Paul wrote as the Beatles.

This book looks interesting, and paints a portrait of one of the many faces and facets of John Lennon.  I am going to try to get a hold of a copy, and run a more in-depth review in the future.

I just Burned a DVD of The 9/11 Chronicles Truth Rising. I've heard good things about it so it should be interesting to watch.

I think what ever side of the issue you stand on about 9/11, they are some serious concerns. Like the health of all those workers who were told it was safe to be down there.

I heard a staggering quote from main stream news papers (USA Today, BBC, CBS) that in the next 5 years thousands of 9/11 workers will die from respiratory disease from breathing in the dust at ground zero.

Whats scary is there were an estimated 40,000 workers at ground zero.
