I am a big fan of Vans.  I hunted down a pair of the silver patent leather from the Marc Jacob collection that sold out really quickly. Yes, it was that serious for me. I like them. They are easy going, like me, and they rock with a lot of casual wear.  

This new batch of SK-8 His from HUF are have a satin upper and come in a number of contrasting color color-ways.  There is no word on a release date but, I think Im going to pick a pair of the royal blue and silvers.

That same day I was chatting with a carpenter friend who runs his own bespoke carpentry company. He told me that he was considering leasing a van rather than purchasing outright and I suggested that he should take a look at the Mercedes Benz sprinter and the flexible deals available from Nationwide Vehicle Contracts.

This he did and he was not disappointed. He tells me that the people at Nationwide were amazingly helpful and he has now placed an order for a new Sprinter Van for his business.

He then gave me a bottle of wine and thanked me for my help. Brilliant!

Vans -- who have collaborated with designer heavyweights such as Marc Jacobs, Loomstate, Trovata -- has tapped illustrator Keren Richter to doodle on pairs of totes and sneakers for the brand.

Made from the Wellesley model, the sides of the sneaker can be folded over to expose even more of Richter's moody drawings. While both shoes have white uppers, one has predominately blue/purple drawings and the other (pictured above) sticks to a more warm/neutral color palette.

Richter's first line of kicks with Vans will debut on June 1.

I was reading a news article today that Microsoft's answer to Apple's iPod is finally heading to Canadian store shelves. The Zune, which was released back in the United States in the beginning of 2007 is finally to compete against the iPod. As an iPod owner, I personally haven't tried the Zune out myself, but I saw a display at a Target store down in Erie, Pennsylvania on a snowy day back in February 2007. For some, it's finally worth the wait after we left out in the cold for the Apple iPhone to come out. With the Zune and the iPhone finally hitting Canadian store shelves, people can decide which portable music player is best for them. There's no word if the Zune will be "iTunes" friendly. Well, it's anyone's guess.

In other Microsoft related news, it seems that Microsoft has finally pulled out of the controversial bid to buy Yahoo which in turn cause a ripple effect on their stocks. Both shares of Yahoo and Microsoft were slightly dropped after the announcement. For my part, it seems that both companies have finally "Decided to break it" after they couldn't agree on a certain deal. If Microsoft were to buy Yahoo today, it'll be topsy-turvy in the information world and this could fuel the next dot-com bubble (like it was back in the late-1990s and heading towards the early-2000s).

In other news, the Virgin Festival in Vancouver (the music festival in which many big-ticket acts perform for two days) has cancelled after it had failed to secure many of the big-ticket and top acts. This is the second time that such a music festival has cancelled in the Vancouver (and B.C.) music scene. First, it was the Vans Warped Tour that pulled out of Vancouver. Now the Virgin Festival has finally fallen to it's wrath.

Andrew Bridge, one of the organizers has quote in an interview: "It wasn't from a lack of trying, but we just couldn't make it come together this year for Vancouver. We don't want to do a sub-optimal festival in Vancouver, We want to make sure that we hold up extremely high standards."

Rock festivals in Vancouver bring a lot of money to the city's economy. Now with two tours being nixed, it leaves many music fans in a uncertain economic future. The V-Fest website for the Vancouver listing mentions that they will be back next year. Let's hope it doesn't happen to one businessman who bilked up thousands of dollars on the Walkerton Watershed Festival (which was cancelled not once, but twice - back in 2003 and 2004).

In other news, I was a reading an article at durhamregion.com about residents protesting against Rouge Valley Health System's move on moving the mental beds from the Ajax-Pickering Hospital to Scarborough's Centenary Health Centre. The hospital coroporation suffered a massive debt worth $78 million CDN. According to one MPP (Member of Parliament), the person who is planning to go for treatment in Scarborough is unrealistic.

Many protesters, from residents to members who work for the Ontario Public Services Employees Union (or OPSEU) took part in a rally against the hospital's decision to move all mental health beds to Scarborough. Despite the rainy weather, many of them won't give up a fight. When I was in Grade 9 and attended the now-defunct Exeter High School, we used to participate in the Terry Fox Run and I can see the hospital in the distance.

In other news, my first day in the Electronics course went very well. I'm striving to be very well in this particular course. 7 weeks is not bad for me. Anyways, I'm leaving you a few lyrics that will fit the scenarios.

I've been bopping around in my canvas Keds Champions ever since Spring hit. However, I've reverted to my 6th grade self by wearing them sans laces. It's an okay look, but admittedly kind of sloppy. So, I was pretty excited to see these Vans Aunthentic Lo Downs in Lucky magazine.

The lack of the third lace hole perks the style up a bit, and polishes up the classic shoe. I'm into it, but I'm waiting for the blue to come out.

IN THE MEANTIME - I keep tidying the Cottage and pulling out weeds with izzy's red gloves.  Laughing about the stretcher which was bigger than the tent and wondering  what we will be doing with the tent which is larger than the stretcher.

Wondering too where he will fit up there in Wintermoon. Steve says that a friend of theirs ELMA who has a clothing stall at Wintermoon had gone in early and put her tent up and reckons she was lucky to do so because its going to be packed out. Steve said it was a Booze Fest last year so this  year they have tightened things up by charging $100 a day and allowing no at gate admissions. Sounds like a Woodstock idea that one. Remember how well THAT worked. I have sprayed WHITE OIL on the gardenia . I didn't even know what WHITE OIL was until Kate told me and sure enough for $3.75 - there's enough for 100 gardenia bushes. I have only one - not being naturally inclined to gardening. I took the mattock to the one beside The Cottage and it looks better. I do like gardens but - they affect me like cooking. They look and taste splendid when someone else looks after them. I do however like my gardenia . Kerry and her Wayne gave it to me before the 2 milkshakes incident at the New Leaf cafe in Murwillumbah and before they moved to Kyogle and I have it still in the big green pot and special soil . Mebbe one day ........

My sk8erboy helped me pick these out. I wore them to work today with my houndstooth slacks ~ the black and white accented the pants nicely and the shoes are oh, so comfortable.

Die Olympischen Spiele ziehen die Aufmerksamkeit der Medien auf sich. Auch ohne Gewalt und Aufstände. Rund um den Erdball wohnen Menschen für gewöhnlich dank technologischer Infrastruktur und der massiven Verbreitung moderner Empfangsgeräte den Wettkampfspielen bei. Die Olympischen Sommerspiele ab dem 8. August 2008 bieten darum unzähligen Konzernen eine der weltweit größten Plattform für effektives Marketing.

Produkte und Marken werden hierbei so platziert, dass man diese im Anschluss und im Idealfall mit dem Olympischen Geist assoziiert. Dadurch kann das Image der Marke verbessert, die Marktanteile vergrößert und der Absatz gesteigert werden. China ist für die westliche Sportartikelindustrie ein bedeutsamer Absatz-Markt, die Olympischen Spiele eine Chance, Tibet eine Gefahr für das Image - sollten die Medien den Druck der politischen Verantwortung auch gegenüber den beteiligten Sponsoren der Sommerspiele weiter erhöhen. Die Politisierung der Olympischen Sommerspiele ist für die beteiligten Unternehmen ein Albtraum.

Sportinstitutionen wie das Internationale Olympische Komitee (IOC) erzielen bei globalen Sportereignissen solcher Größenordnungen insbesondere durch Sponsoren- und Lizenzverträge Rekord-Einnahmen. Meldungen des IOCs aus dem Jahr 2005, im Hinblick auf die diesjährigen Spiele, ist zu entnehmen, dass man in 2008 mit Rekordsummen rechnet. Und wer sponsort investiert. Dies muss sich auszahlen. Nach Expertenschätzungen, sind bisher über eine Milliarde Dollar an Sponsorengeldern beim Organisationskomitee eingegangen.

Den Angaben des IOC zufolge, erreichen die Olympischen Spiele dieses Jahr in über 200 Ländern mehrere Milliarden Menschen. Für die Sportartikelindustrie das entscheidende Argument, ihre Marken zu platzieren, wo Kamera-Objektive der Menschen beste körperliche und willensmäßige Fähigkeiten im Blitzlichtgewitter erbracht werden: in Peking. Oder anders: auf dem Monitor, in den Nachrichten, Dokumentationen, Sportreportagen, Berichterstattungen und in eingefrorenen Bildern auf den Titelseiten der Printpublikationen. Das könnte sich auszahlen.

"Sportswear Partner“ Adidas wirbt indes nicht nur, sondern stellt auch die Ausrüstung für den Mitarbeiterstab sowie die Freiwilligen und die technischen Funktionäre bei den Olympischen und Paralympischen Spielen 2008 in Peking. Adidas vor allen Augen. Auch die chinesische Olympiamannschaft geht im Drei-Streifen-Style an den Start. So hofft der Herzogenauracher Sportartikler die Konkurrenz abzuhängen. Bis Ende 2008 soll es Informationen zufolge in der Volksrepublik 4000 Adidas-Läden geben. Zwei Jahre später noch 1000 weitere. Das Adidas beinahe die Hälfte der Sportschuhe, die weltweit verkauft werden, in mehr als 250 chinesischen Fabriken herstellt, ist ein weiterer Grund, warum auch dieser Hersteller sich mit dem Regime in Peking verbunden fühlt.

Das Credo der Fabrikanten lautet derweil: Unsere Marke ist die Voraussetzung für Leistung - unsere Produkte unterstützen die Hochleistungssportler bei ihrem Training sowie beim Erreichen ihrer Ziele.

Das Credo der Olympischen Charta lautet immer schon: die Olympischen Spiele sind ein gutes Beispiel für die Achtung universell gültiger Prinzipien. Das Menschenrechte dazugehören, weiß seit den Bildern von Aufständen gegen die chinesische Zentralregierung in Tibet nahezu jedes Kind.

Die Freude auf Seiten der Sponsoren hält sich darum in Grenzen, wenn das Medienanalyse-Instituts PressWatch auf die unlängst enorme Medienresonanz verweist, die der Fackellauf der Olympischen Spiele 2008 bisher verursacht hat. Denn die Gründe sind weniger gezielte PR-Strategien der Konzerne denn eher politische Gegebenheiten und konkret die Missachtung von Menschenrechten in Tibet. Allein in der ersten Woche des Olympischen Fackellaufs erscheinen darum, schätzt das Institut PressWatch, über 50.000 Artikel in den Online-Medien von 67 Ländern. In London, Paris und San Francisco gibt es schwere Auseinandersetzungen mit Demonstranten die sich mit den Forderungen der Tibeter, auf mehr Autonomie gegenüber der chinesischen Besatzungsmacht, solidarisieren. Dies Meldungen sorgen für mehr als drei Milliarden Besuche auf den Seiten der Online-Ausgaben von Zeitungen und Magazinen. Viele Artikel richten sich im Wortlaut gegen die chinesische Regierung. Wenige hingegen behandeln die Verfilzung von Poltik und Wirtschaft.

Die Sportartikelhersteller und sonstige Sponsoren der Olympischen Spiele werden bisher selten in Verbindung mit politischer Verantwortung gebracht. Die Komplexität des Themas lässt sich einerseits nur schwer in Kürze transportieren und ist andererseits exportschädigend. Außerdem sind dieselben finanzstarken Konzerne simultan Werbekunden auch der Medienanstalten und Verlagshäuser.

So verursacht auch der Hinweis, dass, um die Produkte für den bevorstehenden Konsumrausch, angeschoben durch die Olympischen Spiele herzustellen, derzeit Menschen in China, in Indonesien, Bulgarien und in der Türkei laut Informationen der Website play fair unter grenzwertigen Bedingungen arbeiten, kaum Resonanzen.
