One of the reasons is that UML attempts to become a programming language.

By aiming to be able to generate full code actually UML tries to be a programming language. In my mind there is a big problem with a general purpose graphical programming language. In human history the written form of all languages evolved from graphical to textual. Alphabets proved to be more versatile and more expressive than pictures in capturing ideas. Try to describe any simple process in images. The funny thing is you still have to annotate the images with words. And the full text version with no pictures still gives you more details. Pictures prove to be good at sharing ideas and allowing people to visualize concepts. But in the end words are better at describing the fine details.

I’ve been using del.icio.us since 2005, and I find it very useful for a number of reasons.
Hav

I've been using del.icio.us since 2005, and I find it very useful for a number of reasons.

Having my bookmarks with me has been invaluable when I've been out in the branches giving presentations. Not being tied to a computer has meant that the Q&A portions of presentations have been more flexible. Before I begin, I usually just open del.icio.us in a second browser, and then I'm ready to go.

Also, occasionally I work an information desk, and having my bookmarks right to hand is very helpful. There is really nothing more frustrating than knowing you saw a site that would exactly answer a patron's queston and not being able to locate it again. Certainly this can still happen with del.icio.us after all you can't bookmark everything -- they'd soon become unmanageable, but for those sites that I do bookmark I have access to them anytime.

Where I really find del.icio.us to be helpful though is in following the bookmarking of people I know. There are some really great library bloggers out there, many of whom give brilliant presentations at conferences around the country. I'll never be able to see all of the presentations I'd like to see, but I can track the websites that these brilliant people find worthy of note, and since the bookmarks are frequently annotated I can glean a sense of what they found useful.

The process I use for discovering these smarties is this:

Read blog post of a library leader.

Visit the sites mentioned in the post,

If the site author has a unique perspective I find useful, I look at their profile to see if they're on del.icio.us and if they are, I'll add them to my network.

Then when I browse my network in del.icio.us, if I find myself consistently saving their sites to my feed, I'll view their network as well to find out who they're following.

This process of finding the smart people and then tracking what they're reading isn't anything new, and harkens back to the old citation indexes that we learned about in library school.

I'm a firm believer that del.icio.us is an important tool in fostering collaboration among work groups. Del.icio.us can become the workplace bulletin board that is so frequently used to post photocopies of articles. Of course del.icio.us is better than that since it's archival and searchable, so its easy to retrieve articles, and websites, or even photographs as needed. The problem I've encountered in using del.icio.us with workgroups is one of inertia--it can be difficult to convince people to try del.icio.us which is necessary to start those watercooler conversations. Collection Development has a delicious feed on our blog, I don't know that anyone is using it besides me, which can be a bit frustrating since I still get emails where someone has sent me a link to look at. These sorts of communications are problematic because emails tend to accumulate and then deleted, so these "i found this cool site" emails can get lost. Sending an email and also saving it to the delicious feed makes these retrievable later when the inevitable conversation rolls around to, "hey, what did you think of that link I sent you last month" where there is then the usual fumbling around looking for the site. It's all so inefficient. I often hear people say that they are too busy for using tools like del.icio.us, of course these hard working folks aren't realizing the time savings they'd benefit from using del.icio.us and other 2.0 tools. Time management skills are some of the most difficult to acquire and I certainly have a long way to go, but tools like del.icio.us are a step in the right direction.

I must admit that the motivation behind this blog post stems from my upcoming trip to Europe. This self-guided tour will include a lot of travel on public transportation system and, as a result, I need maps to guide my travels. In comes iSubwayMaps.com to the rescue. This small but growing database of maps utilizes the photos feature of all modern iPods to display subway maps of various major cities around the world.

In schools, we can utilize these maps to teach a tool within a tool. Maps are a navigation tool and the development of mapping skills are found in curriculum expectations at the early-mid elementary grades. The ability to download maps from iSubwayMaps to an iPod and to have these maps available wherever one is opens up a whole range of possibilities in teaching students mapping skills using an iPod beyond just subway maps. Any image of any map of anywhere in the world will do and with the ability to add multiple images, a student can scroll through various part of a maps just as it is done with an iSubwayMaps map. A teacher can also utilize this technique by including historical maps in the iPod's library of maps.

The possibilities of using an iPod for maps extends beyong just static images as this video of the Toronto Subway system clearly demonstrates:

So for those looking for more try the TextMate Wiki, there is some great themes on there you can find it here

I just love using TextMate, it has become my standard editor for scripts, text and more on the Mac.

Steve Yegge in one of his posts talks about Google's policy of standardizing on the use of only a few programming languages. He mentions how he, as a guy interested in different languages, was at first annoyed by that fact, but later came to realize it was the only sensible way of building systems as scalable as theirs have to be.

In what seems to contradict that view, in Facebook's recent discussion of the decisions they had to make when designing Facebook Chat, they mention choosing Erlang because, well, it was made to do distributed, realtime systems with... message passing. Can't get a better fit for a Chat project than that.

To make that code interface with their existing codebase, they used Thrift, their free software "framework for scalable cross-language services development", whose white paper begins with the strong remark:

"In our implementation of these services [Facebook], various programming lan-
guages have been selected to optimize for the right combination of performance, ease and speed of development, availability of existing libraries, etc. By and large, Facebook’s engineering culture has tended towards choosing the best tools and implementations available over standardizing on any one programming language and begrudgingly accepting its inherent limitations."

Now, of course Google and Facebook have very different needs (crawling, storing, rating and indexing the whole web on a regular basis must be a bit more challenging than showing user profiles -- even if it's showing many of them, many many times a day), and playing safe has surely worked out well for Google so far. But sometimes that requires reimplementing Ruby on Rails in Javascript just to suite a company requirement.

It's good to see there is a place in the monster-traffic world for programming language enthusiasts :)

Server virtualization:

Why is a discounted Microsoft license cost being compared to VMware List Pricing??

Where are the Microsoft System Center Server License Costs?

Since When Did All VMware Customers Decide to Run System Center?

The Model Incorrectly Calculates Microsoft Licensing Costs

Microsoft Cost Savings are HUGE… if You Believe the Assumptions

Why are 4-way Servers the Model’s Default Assumption? Oh yeah… It Increases VMware’s Perceived Cost.

VM Density Per Host Matters for TCO – a Fact that Microsoft Ignores

VMware VI3 Enterprise Functionality is Far Greater than Hyper-V

En ten aanzien van desktop virtualisatie:

Desktop virtualization:

Microsoft Tool Assumes Wrong Costs for VMware VDI

Readers Must Figure Out that Microsoft Compares Two Completely Different Technologies

Microsoft Assumes Low Consolidation Ratios for VMware VDI

Questionable Assumptions for How Microsoft’s Desktop Solution Lowers Cost

Het is te hopen dat dit zal leiden tot een toolkit die uiteindelijk door alle leveranciers wordt ondersteund. De kans daarop is op korte termijn nog niet zo groot vrees ik. Zie Tim Stephan's blog voor meer.

In this post, i will briefly try to explain what Javascript is all about and will point you to some

In this post, i will briefly try to explain what Javascript is all about and will point you to some interesting videos which you should watch if you are a newbie into the world of Javascript.

JavaScript is a scripting language most often used for client-side web development. This means it runs on your visitor's computer and so does not require constant downloads from your web site. One most important thing to remember is that Javascript and Java are not the same.They are two completely different computer languages. Its just that Javascript has the mention of Java in it. Almost all the web browsers have built in support for Javascript. This means your javascript code will run on the browser of your website visitor everytime he/she visits your page provided they have Javascript enabled on their respective browser.

Because JavaScript code can run locally in a user's browser (rather than on a remote server), it can respond to user actions quickly, making an application feel more responsive. Furthermore, JavaScript code can detect user actions which HTML alone cannot, such as individual keystrokes. Applications such as Gmail take advantage of this: much of the user-interface logic is written in JavaScript, and JavaScript dispatches requests for information (such as the content of an e-mail message) to the server.

Although, there are multiple books and free online resources available for learning JavaScript, i would suggest viewing these videos from the Senior JavaScript Architect at Yahoo and creator of JSON, Douglas Crockford.

Douglas in these four videos mentioned below, provides a comprehensive introduction to the JavaScript Programming Language. A must watch for anyone planning to learn Javascript.

Douglas Crockford:The Javascript Programming Language Part 1

Douglas Crockford:The Javascript Programming Language Part 3

Please see that sometimes Yahoo Videos says " Sorry! This video is no longer available on Yahoo! Video.
.NET 3.5 SP1 Beta and Real Life

While there are many nice improvements in the .NET 3.5 SP1 Beta (see here, here or here), there are

While there are many nice improvements in the .NET 3.5 SP1 Beta (see here, here or here), there are problems too, unfortunately... Yesterday we spent half a day trying to understand why absolutely simple and legitimate piece of XAML is not opening in Blend 2. The code looks like this (relevant part of it):

<Window.Resources>
  <Style TargetType="{x:Type ListBoxItem}" x:Key="LBIS">
    <Setter Property="FocusVisualStyle" Value="{x:Null}"/>
  </Style>
  <ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type ContentControl}"
    x:Key="CT">
    <ListBox ItemContainerStyle="{StaticResource LBIS}"/>
  </ControlTemplate>
</Window.Resources>
<ContentControl Template="{StaticResource CT}"/>

Simple, isn't it? Well, it is not! Blend is choking on the Setter of FocusedVisualStyle in the ListBoxItem's LBIS style with '' XML namespace prefix does not map to a namespace URI, so cannot resolve property 'FocusedVisualStyle'. FocusedVisualStyle can be substituted by almost any other property of the ListBoxItem, although some of them, e.g. Width or Opacity will work.

On the other hand, following XAML will open nicely (ListBox is not inside of the template anymore):

<Window.Resources>
  <Style TargetType="{x:Type ListBoxItem}" x:Key="LBIS">
    <Setter Property="FocusVisualStyle" Value="{x:Null}"/>
  </Style>
</Window.Resources>
<ListBox ItemContainerStyle="{StaticResource LBIS}"/>

Both snippets open nicely in Blend 2 on a machine without the SP1 beta. As we need Blend 2 and do not rely on anything SP1-specific, I decided to uninstall SP1 beta. And here comes the problem - it is "mission impossible". I have spent half of the last night trying to get rid of it, all in vain. I have tried everything, including Automated cleanup tool to remove the .NET Framework by Aaron Stebner (which by the way managed to completely remove .NET 3.5 - nice job, Aaron!!!). But the result is the same - Blend 2 is irreparably broken. I cannot even reinstall it as installer complains about "Unknown product..." and I cannot do anything about that - cleaning registry, monitoring installer's activities, etc. did not help. Visual Studio 2008 is broken too now, but that is another story.

Microsoft guys know that Blend 2 is not really compatible with SP1 Beta of .NET 3.5, and recommend waiting for the release version of SP1. On the other hand, Blend 2.5 March CTP Refresh seems to work fine in this scenario.

I have to reinstall Windows now, which is not a problem per se, as I was planning it for some time now anyway, but one would expect that this kind of basic/primitive errors would not exist in beta product - we are not talking about an "advanced" scenario in this case.

I went to the local hardware store and asked the girl behind the counter if she could scan the barcode from my phone ...the barcode was scanned successfully.

The cards are stored as images in an iPhoto album that is synced with my iPhone through iTunes. Newly scanned cards are stored in the album and are automatically synced. When asked for the card I pull out my phone and open the "card" in full screen mode.
