Just an FYI that I registered for Twine. The site says it "helps you organize, share and discover information about your interests, with networks of like-minded people". Maybe I'll find some like minded people? Maybe I'll find others who are interested in my interests? Interesting to see where this can go. After registering it said I will receive instructions via email. Now I have another social networking link to keep track of.

If you are having trouble keeping track of your links, I suggest keeping online bookmarks using del.icio.us. It's a popular online social bookmarking site. You can keep a note of your "password/login" and share the list of your sites with your friends. I use it as well as Pageflakes. I absolutely love Pageflakes and don't know how I'd start my use of the internet without it. Basically it is similar to iGoogle or NetVibes. You can basically develop your own custom home page on the internet with all of your favorite links (from del.icio.us even!), flickr photos, check email, RSS feeds from your favorite sites (news, sports, fashion, cooking, etc.), make a To Do List, insert Google Maps, see all the files you've uploaded to Box.net (online file storage), play sudoku, send a Twitter message, watch your favorite YouTube channels, etc. ....ALL FROM ONE PAGE. Bring the internet to YOU. You shouldn't fuss about where to find all of your favorite goodies on the net...don't waste time. Live more efficiently. Pageflakes allows me to do a quick check of everything from news to email...to even Facebook in the few minutes before my kids wake up! If you are a working mom or just a working and busy woman in general....setting up Pageflakes is absolutely necessary!

Today, as the video opens with some awesome sounds from a V18 amp head in the background - Ed lets us know, we're going to be learning about StumbleUpon...take a look at the video below.

Find Great Websites With StumbleUpon

This lesson is kind of a tough one to do, and the reason for that is StumbleUpon. It's a powerful tool, it's very cool - but it can also be a bit of a distraction. You'll see what I mean.

So, what is StumbleUpon?

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="357" caption="StumbleUpon - SU Logo"][/caption]

Basically, if you're in a "discovery" frame of mind - or looking for ideas, StumbleUpon is a terrific way to go through the internet looking for things you like. It gradually gets to know the things you like and the things you don't like - and comes up with some real gems based on your preferences. The longer you use StumbleUpon, the better it gets at serving up sites that you'll like.

The reality is, there are billions of web pages out there - you've probably only actually seen a tiny fraction of a percent of them. You'll never get through them all - and you could never search out just the ones you'd like. In fact, you probably have a fixed set of sites you go through and rarely discover anything outside of your "bubble." And I mean that in the nicest possible way...

StumbleUpon also has awesome potential for internet marketing. We'll learn more about that as we get into the actual Thirty Day Challenge. Like many social bookmarking sites, the more a site gets a positive rating - a thumbs up - the better it is. This ranking system works very well to connect users with sites based on their preferences. We can utilize that to bring attention to our sites as well.

This should be mentioned now, Ed and the Thirty Day Challenge Team is operating under the assumption that your content adds value for the reader, offers up a solution to a problem or just plain makes somebody's day. If it's none of those things, social bookmarking will work against you and eventually lead to your demise.

Take this site for example - does it add value for you the reader? I hope it does. I hope that you're watching the training videos in their entirety - and then I'm hoping these notes add value as a reference tool for you.

Do these posts offer a solution to a problem? Well, that may be debatable. But it probably solves a problem for some people. By posting summarized notes on the thirty day challenge - I'm creating a reference tool for my own use that I expect will also become a reference tool for other thirty day challengers.

Does finding a resource like this make your day? Only you can answer that one - but I'd like to think I made your day a little bit better. Whether I did or didn't - please let me know in the comments area below.

StumbleUpon, and sites like it want to add value for their users - and because of that, they don't want to be victimized by spammers. So they look closely at how people use their service. If you want to avoid being lumped in with the spammers, don't spam. Learn how to use social bookmarking sites the way they were intended to be used.

Let's Get Ready To Stumble!!!

Now, I've been holding off on this - and I'm glad I have. To review, back in the post "Extensions To Install In Flock" one of the extensions we installed was the StumbleUpon toolbar.

If you haven't signed up ro StumbleUpon yet, you should go ahead and do it now:

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="500" caption="StumbleUpon - Join"][/caption]

Now, let's get it fired up.

Once I'd installed the StumbleUpon toolbar and restarted Flock - my screen came up with this:

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="435" caption="StumbleUpon - Continue Customizing"][/caption]

And the actual toolbar looked like this:

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="240" caption="StumbleUpon - Start Stumbling or Sign In"][/caption]

What to do...What to do...Okay, I'll hit the "continue" button... and here's the screen I get:

So this is how StumbleUpon gets to know me in the beginning...

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="500" caption="StumbleUpon - Select Your Interest"][/caption]

Now it's time to open my StumbleUpon account

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="401" caption="StumbleUpon - Create Account"][/caption]

My user name is SteveH2008 - feel free to look me up if you'd like to be my StumbleUpon friend.

And now my screen shows this:

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="500" caption="StumbleUpon - Start Stumbling"][/caption]

AND - my toolbar now looks like this on the left:

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="313" caption="StumbleUpon - Toolbar, Left Side"][/caption]

and like this on the right:

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="500" caption="StumbleUpon - Toolbar, Right Side"][/caption]

Now We're Ready To Stumble!!!

The Thirty Day Challenge is all about taking action - so let's take some action now. Go ahead, click the Stumble! button.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="95" caption="StumbleUpon - Stumble Button"][/caption]

Let's see what comes up:

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="500" caption="StumbleUpon - Nelix Nebula"][/caption]

This comes from www.wikisky.org - a picture of the Nelix Nebula.

What do I think? Do I like it or not?

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="112" caption="StumbleUpon - Thumbs Up-Thumbs Down"][/caption]

Now, it has nothing to do with making money online, but at the risk of revealing my own inner geek - I happen to like it - so I click the "I like it" button

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="112" caption="StumbleUpon - I liked it"][/caption]

Let's try one more - I click the Stumble button and...

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="406" caption="StumbleUpon - Dr. Grammar"][/caption]

This comes from www.drgrammar.org - and might come in handy if, say for instance - you have to do some writing :)

What do I think?

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="112" caption="StumbleUpon - Thumbs Up - Thumbs Down"][/caption]

Now, this could actually be a good resource for copy writing - AND I can think of a few people who might like it too - so I click the "I like it" button

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="112" caption="StumbleUpon - I Liked It"][/caption]

Enough of my little personal digression...let's get back to the rest of the lesson.

What if I didn't like it? Well, I could just click on the "thumbs down" button. Does that deal a devastating blow to someone's content? Not really, it's mainly a way for StumbleUpon to serve up websites that I would actually like.

If you use this in a genuine way, any time you come across a page or a post or content you like - you should get into the habit of clicking the "I like it" button.

Now, as I click the Stumble! button - I'll be going through pages that have already been "Stumbled Upon" by someone.

What if I come across a piece of content that hasn't been "Stumbled" before?

Man, I am so glad you asked that. Here's why...

I haven't done any social bookmarking for this site yet. I've made a few blog comments, and started including it in my Thirty Day Challenge signature - but that's it. So, I'm going to go ahead and "Stumble" one of the posts here that I think is very useful. The "Table of Contents" page...

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="500" caption="StumbleUpon - Submitting the TOC"][/caption]

So - that will become part of my routine. In addition to writing up my notes, once I publish the post - I'll start using the "I like it" button to add my posts into StumbleUpon.

As I was typing this post and doing the screen capture above, I realized that I forgot to add tags before I submitted the site to StumbleUpon. In fact, in looking at the screen shot - there wasn't a place in the dialog box for adding tags. In the video, Ed talks a little bit about tags - and they are important. But I couldn't add any - so, now what? I'm glad you asked...

To fix or edit something like that, I'm going to click on the link in my toolbar marked "Favorites"

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="234" caption="StumbleUpon - Favorites"][/caption]

From here, I can locate the site I just posted.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="500" caption="StumbleUpon - EditMyPostTags"][/caption]

I click on the "edit" button in the upper right corner of the entry.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="500" caption="StumbleUpon - Adding-Editing Tags"][/caption]

The editor allows you to edit your description, and also add tags at the bottom. It seemed to limit me to 5 tags, I'm not sure if that's consistent within StumbleUpon. But I wasn't able to get more than 5 tags to save or display. Take that for whatever it's worth. Once I was finished adding tag, I just clicked the "save" button.

Of course, if you'd like to practice using StumbleUpon - feel free to click YOUR "I like it" button while you're still reading THIS post. If it's already been "stumbled" - that'll be all you have to do. If you happen to be the first to "stumble" a post - well, you may end up writing a description and selecting a category and tags too.

Now, the homework Ed assigns is pretty simple. Spend some time, maybe an hour or so - and Stumble. Click "I like it" for the things you like, and click the "Thumbs down" button if you come across something you don't like. This will help you get to know StumbleUpon better AND will also help StumbleUpon get to know you too.

Keep in mind as you start stumbling - use it the way a person would use it, not as a "marketer" would use it. It's like a bank account. By "stumbling" sites that you enjoy - it's like making a deposit to your account. If you "stumble" one of your own posts - it's like making a withdrawal. Make sure you don't overdraw your account. That's something a spammer would do.

Let's wrap this up with a look at the "Channels:" section of your toolbar.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="279" caption="StumbleUpon - Channels"][/caption]

Notice the "Globe" icon - that one randomly takes you through everything.

You can Stumble through "favorites of friends"

You can Stumble through images.

You can Stumble through videos.

You can Stumble through a list of popular websites, like YouTube or WordPress or Flickr - the drop down menu gives you a lot of options.

You can Stumble through News Items.

And the "All" drop down menu give you a host of ways to filter through the items you Stumble.

One thing I noticed - when I'm on this tab in my browser, editing my WordPress blog - the WordPress icon appears to the left of the Globe icon.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="305" caption="StumbleUpon - Channels-WordPress"][/caption]

If I switch tabs to a YouTube video, the YouTube logo appears there.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="305" caption="StumbleUpon - Channels-YouTube"][/caption]

When I switch to my Flickr tab to grab one of my screen captures - the Flickr logo appears in that place.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="306" caption="StumbleUpon - Channels-Flickr"][/caption]

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the StumbleUpon toolbar can recognize the site you're on and offers up the option of stumbling through items within that site. Pretty cool trick if you ask me...

Gone In 6.34 Seconds Or The Do's and Dont's Of Entry Page Design

by Sergey Alekseyev
If you have published something on the web, you are most likely familiar with the two basic areas that web publicity can be divided in: getting visitors to your site, and keeping them there (actually there is also a third one - making them come back, check out http://www.s-kaze.com/articles for a followup article on this important topic). The first one is a very large and constantly developing area, and many good articles have been written on it. Some of the keywords which can be mentioned here are:
- submission to search engines
- getting listed in directories
- taking part in affiliate programs
- classic advertising
- joining webrings
- starting a blog
- writing an article
- making a press release
- and many others
This, however, is not our main focus. What is addressed a lot less often, especially from a statistical point of view, is the second area: what do users do on average when they come to a site, and what are the best ways to grab their attention and make a good first impression?

A recent study at Ottawa's Carleton University found that web surfers actually form an impression of a site's visual value in 50-100 milliseconds. Of course, that alone does not yet decide their behavior, but it creates a certain prefilter which then colors the subsequent impression when the site is examined in more detail(if it actually gets there, that is).

Let us assume a visitor has come to your entry page and starts viewing it, and let us try to dissect this process on a chronological
scale. This may not be the same for all sites, but for the sake of simplicity we can analyze a more-or-less average case (quickly loading page, quick and impatient user searching for information on a certain topic which your site features) and depict a number of basic mistakes at each stage.

- first 50-300ms: user sees the background and the basic site layout. A couple of basic dont's at this stage include: a strange background color (pink, orange, and similar bright colors are disliked by many), especially in a combination with similarly colored-fonts or layout elements. Always aim for clear readability! Dark grey 8-point font on a black background may look cool, but it tires people to read it (few actually do). For some examples of what can go wrong at this stage look at

Sites that look distinctly unprofessional and offensive to the eye (say, combine the above colors with some flashy ads) have a good chance of being discarded already at this stage, when the user has not even read any of the content. So, unless you are a pro aiming for some specific look, this is something you should avoid at any cost.

- 2 to 4 seconds later: user scans the basic page layout and headlines. Here, the topic and key elements of your site should be visible already (i.e. "The Complete Guide on Pet Food"). A frequent mistake here is that the page layout is overloaded and cluttered with numerous frames, banners, menus, ads, etc. This confuses the visitor since it is not clearly visible where the real content actually is. Keep it as clear-cut as you can. Of course, most of the time you will have some advertisements, but in the long term it is better to place them more organically (i.e. into a content page on the same subject) and not make them obtrusive and annoying as on innumerable sites currently around on the web.

Here's a tip that is actually important for the first category of website optimization as well: non-cluttered sites are much more spider-friendly and thus improve the chances that all of your relevant content actually gets indexed by the search engines.

- next 2-3 seconds*: user reads a few initial sentences of your entry page and finishes forming a basic impression. It is at this point that many people will leave. The reason is usually simple: they don't see anything of immediate interest. Maybe your page has it, but they didn't find it in the 6-8 seconds that they are used to. This sounds really obvious when you think about it - we've all observed it often enough - but when people design pages they often think about it from a "how can I pack all I want in here and make it possibly flashy" standpoint instead of "how can I make it possibly quick and easy for the user to find my key content".

* The length of this stage may vary, since not all people read/scan at the same speed. Especially older people will in general not rush it so much, which may give you another 10-20 seconds.

- final 2-3 seconds: user clicks on one or two links that appeal most to him. From an unofficial empirical study, in about 80% of
the cases the first link clicked is in the main menu or in the first content paragraph, so it is important to have those point
to relevant, quickly loading information on your site (e.g. linking to Microsoft.com or to a 5-MB PDF file in the first paragraph is
in general not a good idea).

If the quick and impatient user is still around after the first 6-10 seconds, chances are that he has found something that grabbed his attention - in most cases a striking headline, an interesting inlined picture, or the first few sentences of a content paragraph. Which is when you can lean back and watch him read all the interesting information on your site...or maybe not. The next steps, which mainly deal with intra-site navigation and content, and are also essential, will be the topic of a follow-up article. As for this one, to summarize, here are some design points that can be considered a good start for a visually attractive page that is likely to hook its visitors:

Colors:

- for content sites, understatement is in general better than trying to use up all the page space
- flashy colors only if you are absolutely sure what you are doing
- no grey on black background (or in general close colors for text/background)
- no weird color combinations: white/black good, pink/orange bad

Structure:

- possibly simple and concise
- fast-loading
- emphasize keywords
- inline meaningful pictures and links, but do not exaggerate
- avoid elements that offense the eye (sharp corners, blurry pictures, etc)

Content areas:

- in content areas, write short, compact sentences
- unless you're an online casino, don't abuse blinking buttons, Flash, and glitter effects
- no super-small (below 9px) text unless you don't intend it to be read (as e.g. for copyright notes)
- no serif fonts, those are subconsciously perceived ugly and unprofessional*. E.g. Verdana, Helvetica, Tahoma are good website fonts. However, if you consciously want to make an amateur, neighbor-next-door impression, you may consider it. See "The Surprising Truth About Ugly Websites"
- emphasize keywords and use small paragraphs to split content into meaningful blocks. Try to avoid large, clumped areas of text without any clear visual hooks

Navigation:

- do not make the visitor click even once more than necessary. According to empirical data, each additional click in general reduces the chance of the visitor staying with you nearly exponentially, i.e. after three clicks you'll just have about 1/8th of your original audience. Various websites take this principle to the extreme and provide basically 1-click services: Google, NeatProgs.com, Answers.com, etc
- do not hide or obscure navigation controls. Always have them clearly visible and adequately described (a dog icon for the "support" page may be cute but is not quite self-explanatory).
- a responsive, subtle visual feedback for mouseover is good style for navigation controls. Do not make this heavyweight and slow though, (trailing effects and such), since it tends to irritate users

Audio/video:

- as a general rule, NO automatically playing sound. Many users outright hate that since they may be browsing at work and don't want it to be announced by your site to all their colleagues in a 10 meter radius. http://www.toshiba.de is a nice example of how even major sites can go wrong with this (unless they took it down already..)
- avoid inlining automatically loading video since it tends to be orders of magnitude larger than all the other files and can slow your page down drastically. If you must have video, make it streaming, and only start loading it on user demand.
There are two final remarks that should be made:

First, none of this is etched in stone. Web design is a quickly developing area, and with time things that may be true today may become less true. One example one can think of is Flash content. As of today, for a site with mainly textual content, the rule should be: the less the better. A well-designed and organic Flash header may still be a good thing, but Flash abuse is one of the easier methods to drive your visitors away. However, in future, as bandwidth becomes greater all the time and thus permits more interactivity, entirely Flash sites - which, when well done, are certainly a different kind of experience than the regular text-based web, and allow doing a lot more to catch user attention than your regular text-based entry page - may perhaps become more and more common.

And second, and perhaps most important, as the web gets ever larger and evolves, content becomes more crucial than ever. There are millions of pages with average and bad design out there, thousands of good ones, yet the ones with lots of interesting content are in the end the ones that users keep coming back to. So, if you have limited time and resources (as most of us), you are definitely better off making a visually simple site with a lot of interesting content than a flashy yet shallow site.

Q: I fish on the coast of New Jersey. Why does the water get cooler in the summertime during a south wind? I thought the south wind would push warm water up the coast, but the opposite seems to happen. Can you explain this?
- Zach Ryba, age 13, Tabernacle, New Jersey

A: One of the forces at work here is the Coriolis effect. In the Northern Hemisphere, wind blowing over the ocean pushes surface water to the right of the wind direction. Therefore, wind moving from south to north pushes surface water to the right (or east, away from the Jersey shore). As warm surface water leaves the coast, colder water lying under the surface comes up to replace it. Bottom water moving onto the beach, (called an upwelling event) causes colder water temperatures and foggy, summer mornings.

Depending on the severity of the event, these cold-water incursions can even penetrate nearby estuaries and bays. While this explanation applies to middle latitudes (e.g., New Jersey), the effect is enhanced near the poles and near zero at the equator. - Mike Fahay

Copyright 2006 Jeanette Cates

Copyright 2006 Jeanette Cates

Picture a spider web with lines connecting and crossing one another. That's the metaphor for the World Wide Web on the Internet.

The key ingredient to the Web are the lines - the links between sites. The search engines send out their spiders to crawl these lines. Spiders are actually computer programs that follow the links from one page to another, from one site to another. But like a live spider, they cannot go if there is not a connection. That's why the links are so important.

In recent years, Google invented the concept of Page Rank. Although more than 100 factors enter into PR ratings, links account for a percentage of a site's ratings. And its not just *any* link. The more links you have from "quality" sites with higher PR, the "better" your site is considered to be.

High PR sites are visited more often by the search engine spiders. That means that all of their links are visited more often and therefore appear quickly, with higher ranking in the search engines. The quest for links from high PR sites spawned a new industry of paid link providers to ensure your site was being "crawled" more frequently by the spiders.

But what if you don't want to pay for a link? There are three major ways you can build links: - Link Exchanges - Articles - Link Directories

Link Exchanges

Traditionally we have relied upon "link exchanges" where another web owner offers to give you a link to your site in exchange for your giving him a link from your site.

There are two problems with this approach. First it's very time-consuming. You have to find the sites you want to link to, send an email, and hope that the other website owner reciprocates. Only 10-40% of them even respond! Then you must track whether or not the links are still in place - and adjust your links accordingly.

The second problem with link exchanges is that many site owners only want to exchange links with established sites. That puts newbies at a distinct disadvantage. It's the Catch-22 - we'll exchange links with you when you have enough incoming links that you no longer need more links! It takes links to get links.

While link exchanges still work and are appropriate, particularly with sites that are closely related to yours, they have been modified along the way.

Articles

The second approach to getting links is articles. Site owners are more likely to publish good content with your link in the Resource Box than to just put up a link. It is the same amount of work for them - but provides more value to their visitors.

In recent months we've seen a merging of articles with link exchanges. Article exchanges are website owners sending each other articles, instead of just links. A more powerful form of this direct exchange is an article "ring" where 5-10 site owners exchange articles on a round robin basis, rather than just one-to-one. That way you're getting links from 10 different sites, rather than just one other one. This tactic is getting good rankings with the search engines.

Link Directories

In the history of links, we've seen several techniques come and go. FFA (Free For All) pages were very popular a few years ago. Essentially a FFA page is just a long list of links, so you can see why the search engines don't find them useful and neither do most people. They are now considered worthless for most purposes.

The latest variation are link directories. They offer several advantages. Instead of just providing a link, they include a description and the ability to specify which words are to be hyperlinked. The hyperlinked keyword phrase tells the search engine spiders where to categorize your page, so it's an important distinction to make in your directory entries.

Link Directories are categorized links and descriptions, so it makes it easier for someone to find an appropriate link.

One of the most important aspect of link directories is that they provide a new website an opportunity to get incoming links rapidly. By registering with 50 link directories you can have 50 incoming links to your site in a week! That makes you much more attractive to potential link exchange partners - from whom you'll receive even more links from your efforts.

Summary

Which tactic is most likely to get you into the search engines and build your rankings in the results? A combination of all of these techniques. New sites will start with Link Directories, then offer articles and finally ask for direct links from related sites. You'll soon open your web stats and say "Along came a spider - or two or three!"

Brussels, 22 September 2004: The ICFTU today expressed its deep regret and concern over the failure of the Iranian authorities to allow international observers to attend the trial of seven labour activists, which starts on 23 September (see ICFTU OnLine of 14 September). Defence lawyers for the accused have also expressed their preoccupation over the fact that the trial will take place in the absence of the observers.

Proceedings against Mahmoud Salehi, one of seven labour activists accused of seeking to establish independent trade union organisations arising from their involvement in May Day activities this year, have been scheduled to start on the morning of 9 September, with hearings against the other accused due to take place in the following days. The Iranian Government has not responded to repeated requests to allow representatives from the ICFTU and from Italian, Palestinian and Swedish trade union and human rights organisations to observe the trial.

The ICFTU will closely monitor the proceedings against the labour activists, which constitute a "flagrant breach of Iran's obligations as a member of the International Labour Organisation".

The ICFTU represents 148 million workers in 234 affiliated organisations in 152 countries and territories. ICFTU is also a member of Global Unions

BANDAR ABBAS, Iran, March 12, 2006 (AFP) - An appeals court in southern Iran on Sunday began hearing the case of a German and Frenchman sentenced to 18 months in jail for illegally entering Iranian waters in a fishing boat.

The new hearing in the town of Bandar Abbas comes after German Donald Klein and an unnamed Frenchman working as his skipper were arrested after straying while on a fishing trip from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in November.

Both men are being represented by Iranian lawyers.
A court in the same town sentenced the men to 18 months in prison on January 24 after the pair argued they entered Iranian waters by accident.

Several areas in the waters between Iran and the UAE are disputed, notably the island of Abu Mussa close to where the two were detained. The two men said they had mistakenly used Emirati maps that did not show the current maritime boundaries.

Their disappearance was first reported on November 29 by Klein's wife when he failed to return from a fishing trip. The German man had been on holiday in the UAE, which lies across the Gulf from Iran.

Author: Staff
To make sure your photo gets as good a chance at winning as possible, take a few minutes to prepare the package properly.

* Always insert cardboard into the envelope to protect your photos from damage.

* If sending slides, send only originals and not duplicates. Make sure each slide has a number and your last name on the mount, and include a caption sheet that gives the details necessary for each shot.

* If sending prints, send as large a print as possible. Larger 8x10 prints often are more impressive to the judges than the 3x5 you typically get from Wal-Mart, and they certainly reproduce better in the magazine.

* Write your name and caption information on the back of the print using a grease pencil or permanent felt-tip marker, such as the trademarked Sharpie brand. Ball-point pens, if pressed too hard, will show through the print, and many non-permanent-ink pens will smear. Whatever ink you use, be sure to test it to make sure it's dry before stacking prints together. Smeared ink could ruin an otherwise spectacular shot.

* Due to the volume of submissions, please do not call to confirm we received your package. If you're at all nervous about sending the shots through the mail, use some sort of shipping service that offers tracking capabilities.

* Most important: Meet the submission deadline. Once we've chosen winners, the contest is ended, no matter how good the shot that comes in tardy.

By Staff

(AXcess News) New York - CBS said it was acquiring CSTV Networks, Inc. in deal valued at $325 million. The acquisition marks CBS entrance into the cable and satellite college sports arena. The acquisition is expected to close in early January.

CSTV Networks, Inc. has 15 million cable and satellite college sports subscribers, putting the tab for CBS at $21.66 per subscriber.

Comscore Media Metrix ranked the CSTV.com network as one of the top ten destinations with the greatest prior monthly increase in unique visitors during the month of September 2005, with a 43 percent increase from August, and more than 7.5 million unique visitors.

The crown jewel for CBS are the online properties consisting of a network of more than 250 official college athletic websites -- each maintained and managed for its institution by CSTV -- featuring full video and audio, news, scores, community elements and e-commerce for retail college sports-related products.

CBS ChairmanLeslie Moonves said, "CSTV a natural fit for our company and we're confident that, as part of CBS, it will continue to grow and compete even more aggressively."

With this acquisition, CBS Corporation will have a larger sports Web audience than any other online medium -- 19 million unique users.

Brian Bedol is CEO of CSTV Networks, Inc. Prior to co-founding CSTV, Bedol was the creator, co-founder and CEO of Classic Sports Network, now known as ESPN Classic.

As anybody who has ever looked for a job fresh out of college or sought to change career fields can attest, it is exceedingly difficult to find an entry-level job that pays well enough to make the change worthwhile. In this day and age, employers still insist on paying their newest employees peanuts. What’s more, the job market has shifted far enough to their side that they can continue to do so and still expect a slew of applicants. A quick scan of the classified ads will reveal as much; the jobs that do offer a decent starting wage are the ones that carry requirements and experience that you simply cannot meet if you’re just starting in that field.

Construction jobs, however, pay considerably better than the typical fare you’re likely to find in the newspaper. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, heavy equipment operators earned up to $22 an hour in 2002, a number that has undoubtedly risen in the past few years. While entry-level operator jobs don’t all pay quite that high, the median rate then was still a very respectable $17 and hour. What this means is that it is possible to make a good living for yourself and maintain a steady supply of work and income as a heavy construction equipment operator. The construction industry is one of the largest in the country, and most conservative estimates have it remaining as such past 2012.

With the ample opportunity provided by construction and operator jobs, it is important that you receive the proper training for them, the training that will give you the best chance of transitioning directly into the industry. The National Heavy Operators School provides just this sort of training. During our comprehensive two-part course, you will learn all essential background information about the various types of heavy machinery currently in use, and you will receive a month’s worth of actual on-site training with the latest machines and technology. The program at National is affordable and designed to be flexible enough to meet any individual needs. The first phase is completed in the student’s home at his or her own pace, and the on-site portion of the training is offered several times a year at National’s North Florida facility.

It’s time to move past the frustration of finding a well-paying entry-level job. Put down the classifieds and say no to thankless, menial tasks. The training program at National will afford you with the skills and knowledge that you need to find a rewarding job.

The Coastal Conservation Association of Florida, the state’s largest recreational fishing cons

The Coastal Conservation Association of Florida, the state's largest recreational fishing conservation group, has become actively involved in the state and federal actions regarding new manatee sanctuaries and refuges. The CCA is primarily concerned that many of Florida's premier saltwater fishing areas are being considered for severe boating restrictions or total closures.

Last December, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service released information indicating that it is considering establishing manatee sanctuaries and refuges in 150 new areas. In addition, a major group suing the state and federal government over manatee protection prepared a list recommending 115 new sanctuaries and refuges. Many of Florida's major saltwater fishing areas are on these lists, including Chokoloskee Bay, Bull and Turtle Bays, Mosquito Lagoon, Pine Island Sound, Terra Ceia Bay, Cockroach Bay, Bishops Harbour and Whitewater Bay.

Scientists have confirmed that manatee populations are at an all-time record 3,276 in statewide aerial surveys, more than double the number counted 10 years ago. In some areas of the state, such as the Crystal River/Kings Bay area, manatee abundance has dramatically increased. The manatee increases in the Crystal River/Homossassa area have occurred over the same time period and in the same areas that saltwater recreational fishing activity for tarpon, redfish and seatrout has also dramatically increased.

PINNACLE AQUATICS, the latest entry into the North American thermal protection and accessory market,

PINNACLE AQUATICS, the latest entry into the North American thermal protection and accessory market, is proud to introduce its patented Merino™ lining system, to be used exclusively in its high-end suits. Merino™ offers warmth and comfort never before available to wetsuit divers.

At DEMA, PINNACLE will be displaying its full line of products, but expects to make the most noise with its patented Merino™ lining system. Merino™, which is a patented fabric, adds warmth and comfort to a wetsuit without adding thickness or buoyancy. Independent scientific testing performed by the British Textile Technology Group has proven a 35% increase in effective insulation over standard wetsuit linings. This makes a 7mm suit as warm as a 9.45mm suit, without the increased cost, buoyancy, and restriction of movement associated with a thicker suit. A 4mm glove lined with Merino™ is nearly the same as a 6mm glove, yet leaving the diver with all the dexterity of the lighter glove.

Merino’s™ additional warmth comes from two main properties, unique to the fabric. The first is that Merino™ has a greater capacity to supersaturate and hold water, keeping a layer of up to 3mm of warm water between a diver’s skin and the neoprene of the suit. In fact, in laboratory tests, Merino™ held over 30% more water than the best synthetic linings.

Because of PINNACLE’S unique and technologically advanced wrist, ankle, and neck sealing systems, a minimal amount of water enters the suit and almost none transfers throughout the dive. This means that the small amount of water that does enter the suit stays there and warms as it insulates the diver, keeping them warm and comfortable throughout longer and deeper dives.

The second unique characteristic of Merino™ is that it is exothermic, which means that it actually gives off a measurable amount heat in a physical reaction as it absorbs water.

Merino’s™ capacity for insulation was first discovered by a company that produces performance clothing for extreme triathletes, who demand the most from their gear because of the wildly varying climactic conditions that they face during a single competition. PINNACLE saw this and immediately realized the potential benefit to divers, developed the Merino™ further for aquatic use, and developed the patented application for wetsuits that is just becoming available to North American divers today.

Because of Merino’s™ super soft composition and fine micron count, there is none of the prickle often associated with wools. The softness of the fabric, as well as its natural origins, eliminates rashes in high-movement areas and the possibility of allergic reactions. Additionally, because of Merino’s™ ability to draw water away from the fabric’s surface, it reduces the cold and clammy feeling associated with donning a damp suit.

Merino’s™ excellent moisture absorption and uneven surface structure help prevent the build-up of odor-causing bacteria, keeping the suit fresh and clean. Its natural crimp and resilience make it resistant to abrasion and from “Velcro attack”, while reducing the ability of soil particles to stick to a suit’s lining.

Ever sensitive to the environment, PINNACLE has developed Merino™ keeping in mind that it is a renewable, natural resource. Unlike the petrochemicals used to produce most of today’s synthetic wetsuit linings, Merino™ is as natural and organic as a baby’s skin.

The exclusive patented Merino™ lining is available only on PINNACLE’S Arctic, Polar, and Elite suits, as well as in a hooded vest and a glove. PINNACLE also makes over 30 other models of wetsuits, drysuits, undergarments, bags, and accessories.

PINNACLE began selling its line in North America earlier this month. At the DEMA Show, PINNACLE will be formally introducing its full line of wetsuits, drysuits, boots, gloves, hoods, bags, and belts at DEMA booth #2737

You can get more information about PINNACLE AQUATICS, Merino™, and all of PINNACLE’S fine products at www.PinnacleAquatics.com, by e-mail at info@PinnacleAquatics.com, or by calling 925-606-8300.

If you are a serious sweepstakes a-holic, then you must devise a way to keep track of all the entrie

If you are a serious sweepstakes a-holic, then you must devise a way to keep track of all the entries you are sending out. There are as many ways to organize your sweepstakes entries are there are to organize your monthly bills. The key is to find a system that works for you and stick with it.

If you are not a "computer person," don't worry. You can organize the "old fashioned way." Even choosing to keep a hard copy filing system, you will have options to choose from.

Perhaps you will choose to file according to the sweepstakes' deadline. Get an index card box and use dividers to break the box into 31 categories, one for each day of the week. File index cards with the contest name, sponsor, prizes and deadline on it. Also, leave a space in the upper left or right corner so you can track how many times you have entered the sweepstakes. This can be a running tally, so if you complete and mail 10 entries one day, you can make the notation on the card. As the deadline approaches, quickly add those tallies together to see if you need to send a few more to beat the cut off date.

Since you will likely be entering sweepstakes several months in advance, include files in your system for the months following the current month. For instance, you might have 1-31 days in your file box for the month of May. Behind the 31st divider, have additional dividers labeled June, July, August, September and farther if you wish. Then, at the beginning of each month, rearrange your contests by deadline dates.

You may find that keeping track of your entries in a spiral notebook is more helpful. You might have to look through a few entries, but you can record the same information and have it available at your finger tips without all the additional organizing and reorganizing you would have to do by the monthly index card method.

For people who are computer savvy, file your information electronically. Use a spread sheet to set up your information. Spread sheets in programs like Excel are quite easy to set up and maintain. You can even have your spreadsheet total the number of entries per month, quarter or year that you are sending.

Since technology allows us to enter sweepstakes by mail and Internet, it will probably be helpful for you to also record your method of entry no matter which filing system you decide to keep. This will help you keep track of how much money you spend in postage each month or year as well.

Organizing your sweepstakes information can save you a lot of time in the long run. Since some sweepstakes limit the number of entries each person can have, either total number of entries or entries per day, knowing exactly what you are entering, how many have been sent and when the deadline is vital to making efficient use of your time. That's just more time you can be entering other sweepstakes to win even more prizes!

The state set a trap for a mother black bear accused of showing no fear of humans and attempting to

The state set a trap for a mother black bear accused of showing no fear of humans and attempting to gain forced entry to a Hardyston home this week.

A township resident, who did not want to release her name, called her three children into the house for breakfast from the back deck Tuesday morning just before 9 a.m. As the last child entered the house, the woman observed a large, adult black bear jump over the deck railing and approach the door where she was standing.

The mother yelled at the adult animal but the bear wouldnt yield and continued to approach, said Al Ivany, spokesman for the state Division of Fish and Wildlife. The mother closed the door to prevent the bear from entering the home.

The Category One black bear is presumably a female, Ivany said, because the bruin was accompanied onto the deck by two cubs and a third cub was observed sitting about 30 feet from the house door.

After closing the inner door to the house, the township woman fainted and hit her head against a wall, Ivany said. Her eldest son dialed 9-1-1, and township officers responded to the scene.

The officers fired one round of rubber buckshot at the bear from 20 yards and the officer said the bears ran into the woods, Ivany said. This is an incident where having the opportunity, the Hardyston police could kill the bear if they have a clear shot.

This was a pretty serious incident, Ivany said, crediting the Hardyston resident for quick thinking to close the door, thus preventing the bruins entry to the home. Thats a very serious incident, and again, now we have a bear attempting to break into a house with its three cubs watching (and learning).

Representatives from the divisions bear management program responded to the scene to set a trap for the bruin Tuesday, and they reported that the female bear had also pushed in an outer screen door to the home, Ivany said.

Family pastor Rev. David Dykstra of the Reformed Baptist Church in Lafayette talked about the incident Wednesday at the Vernon Township High School bear meeting, co-sponsored by the state Division of Fish and Wildlife and the Vernon Police Department. State Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Bradley Campbell also attended the meeting to hear public concerns, questions and comments.

In response to the bear discussion forum, the Vernon Township Council will consider passing a resolution at its Aug. 12 meeting allowing a non-binding referendum vote to hold a limited bear hunt. However, the state has the final decision on holding a hunt.

As the largest municipality in northwest New Jersey, and with a large and growing bear population, Vernon would be uniquely qualified to provide a true read of citizen sentiment on whether a limited bear hunt should be a part of the bear population control mix, Vernon Mayor John Logan said Thursday in a press release., I am sure that the Vernon Town(ship) Council will welcome this opportunity to partner with the DEP to address this pressing issue.
