I've been listening to almost nothing but Coldplay these past two days (something my brother can attest to because it's driving him crazy) because their new album came out on June 17th in the US an I've been trying to decide what I think of it.

First off the sound of this CD is much different from the other albums they have out and might put some people off if they prefer Coldplay's more acoustic style. For others, it might just take some getting used to. There's a lot more guitar on this album and they've even gotten a bit gutsy and added some string action as well. Their X&Y album was a bit of an acquired taste for me and I think some of this new album will be too.

Now for the tracks themselves. We'll start with what I don't like and get that out of the way. My least favorite song on here is "Lost!" There's some odd clapping thing going on in the back ground that I think is too distracting. The acoustic version, "Lost?" is better musically but I still don't like they lyrics. I haven't really made a decision on "42." I'm on the fence about whether I like it or not.

The rest of the CD I like. Track 1, "Life in Technicolor," is mostly instrumental. It's kinda just the same riff over and over with variations in instrumentation but I like it. After that comes "Cemeteries of London" and I'm not a huge fan of the intro, but I like the rest of it. "Viva La Vida" is probably my favorite track on this album so far. The strings in the intro and throughout the song are strong and I think they add a lot to the whole mood of the song. (right now I'd like to interject that I feel like I'm suddenly writing an English paper analyzing a piece of literature.) Violet Hill was the first track I heard from this album, and if you want a political statement this song is it. Check out this video. (please notice Tony Blair with the guitar riff.)

So, all in all I like the new album with a few exceptions. But I have to say that possibly my favorite song by Coldplay is still "See you Soon." Here you go.

But wait! There's more!

I just realized today/yesterday June the 21/22 (I'm not sure what it counts as since I haven't been to bed yet) that the album begins and ends with the same melody. wow. genius. It comes full circle and I like that.

but now there's nothing I can do

today I’ll say my goodbye to you

i can't stay beside you in want you do

time will pass, it would lessen the pain

and there really much i could try to do

and i know you're the only reason i survived

knowing that no matter how much time will past

that the memory of who you are will remain

and always the memories of you will last

and as the days grow easier, so shall the pain

i will never forget you and i will always miss you

and i hope that you will remember me in all that you do

Well, JJ and I are setting off for a big trip first thing tomorrow: to the East Coast!

(Um, no, we won't be dancing out there - we're taking the train. I wonder if you could call it the Orient Express?!?)

So, alas, this means that I will be taking a short hiatus from the blog. I will miss you all dreadfully, but JJ insists that I need a break from "that bloody computerrrrr" as well as from work. (In exchange for this great sacrifice, by the way, he has agreed to check out some yarnie spots down there that I have researched. I don't know if he realises quite what he is in for, actually).

(Oh, and by the way, I've bribed hired Mario the superintendent

to watch over my spare room while I'm gone - so don't get any ideas about stash raiding...!! Your only chance is to show up right after he's finished the bottle of vodka this cost me, I figure...)

Nova Scotia, by the way, is home to the Fleece Artist - so who knows what I might manage to score in my travels?!

I'm also likely taking a wee break from knitting as well as I have some trashy novels to catch up on... but will be taking some lovely Blue Moon with me just in case. I'll also be practicing my tango moves...

(I started Argentinian tango lessons some time back. It is quite addictive. If you do a YouTube search on "tango" and "argentina" you'll see what I mean. I had taken lessons for a couple of years some time back but my then-dance partner was 13 inches taller than me, which proved a bit awkward. This time, I've managed to find a midget like myself.)

So, I'll be back on 7 or 8 June or thereabouts with lots of boring vacation photos and, it is hoped, far less boring pics of NS yarns!

Wishing you a lovely couple of weeks, and see you anon!

Kristina

PS. I just realised that the subject line of this post will probably only make sense to Canajans like me who were forced to learn annoying little folk songs about all the provinces in public school years. The Nova Scotia one was called "Farewell to Nova Scotia" and is actually quite a depressing little ditty talking about dead sailors, etc. Another east coast favourite was "I's the bye who builds the boat" from Newfoundland - anyone remember that one?! Now try and get it out of your head. Ha!

Kerstin, Claire, Cassi, Molly, Katie and Johanna; aka my Lovelies;
this past 9 months has gone by am

Kerstin, Claire, Cassi, Molly, Katie and Johanna; aka my Lovelies;

this past 9 months has gone by amazingly fast. they've been filled with numerous quoteable times most on the 12th floor, a few at UDS and many others in random places.

and i'm so glad to have met every single one of you. and it absolutely breaks my heart that after forging this bond, and being there for one another in the best of our times and the worst of our times these past two semesters.

Cassi, I'm sorry I missed your departure. I miss you like it's my job. and i love you. and i'm gonna be going crazy without you next semester. i hope you have a buttload of fun next semester in Australia. i expect pictures, missy!!

now for the real purpose of this note:

first farewells are always tough. especially considering that i've spent practically every waking moment not in class or rehearsal with Kerstin, Claire, Cassi and Molly. so today, at a little after 7 when Kerstin texted me with an "i'm leaving" i prepared myself for the worst. i already knew i was going to cry, and sure enough, i started tearing up right as we got to the front desk for Kerstin to turn in her key. we all walked her out the the parking lot, where promptly, the tears began to flow freely. this was possibly the best and worst goodbye ever.even though we were all ready to close the year and head home, we weren't necessarily prepared to leave everyone behind. especially in this case, since this is a more permanent goodbye. Kerstin's off to 'Kato! but she's promised us a bunch of visits, and i'm holding her to that. when we got to her car in the ramp, we all stood there for what seemed like precious hours packed into minutes. we didn't have enough time to say goodbye, and we knew that time wouldn't wait for us. but we made the most of that brief time, and i can say, for myself at least, that i relived every second of the past 9 months with you guys in that swift seven minutes. as Claire said, using Kerstin's infamous words "you'll always be right shnrrr."(i hope i spelled that right)
after our third chorus of goodbyes, we watched Kerstin pull away, her tail lights flickering at us as she followed the arrow pointing left, conveniently marked "exit".
what i really want to say is i'm grateful to know that i've met the people who will probably be my best friends for the rest of my life here, this year. i know this isn't goodbye, so i won't say that. rather, i leave you all with a see you later, see you soon.

lots of love, hugs and cosmos,
<3. Addy
(PS - I'm still crying.)

Along time no hear. About time I got my finger out and did the review for....

I should have done this ages ago. Yep I've forgoten the track listing and I bet many other things. I suck.

The Betsey Trotwood is about as intermit place as you can get. This stylish bar opposite The Guardian or Independent (or both) has provided a home for many up and comming bands. Always a good idea to go where the jurno's are, for as we know they can be lazy sods at times.

I missed the first band on, mostly due to meeting up with the band after a long absence; meeting and greeting the new bass player Steve Angel and catching up with all the goss. After tucking into a bowl of chilli and chips with the band. We headed downstairs to probably Londons most compact venue. If you've ever been there you'll know what I'm talking about.

There was a good turn out and it was great to see some of The Dentists fans from days of yore. The alcoves soon filled up with the throng. The atmosfear was close and added to the feeling that this was a personal gig. Everywhere is in the front row. Mark crashed into the opening chord of Clap Hands and they were back! It felt good to be there as a couple pushed their way passed me.

As the set progressed more joined the now packed crowd. It struck me this was a meeting of old and new fans. Joining in the apprieciation of The Echo Heights. Growing, to the point you could feel it.

As I said in the the start I've forgot/lost the set list, Doh! But the firm favourites were there and joined with Rooftops, it's first UK outing. Being a new track that is on the forthcoming album.

The size of this venue does have it's drawbacks. As we have seen before The Echo Heights are a big sound and need space to breathe it into the open mouthed ordience. The bloke on the mixing desk curtainly has his work cut out, balancing the foldback and output from the performers. 'Mind the cymbals' was shouted at one point (snigger). I still think the band could have asked for more from the desk.

Oh too soon the time is against us and after a gathering in the bar, (ears still ringing!) we left slowly, humming the tunes as we drifted into the winter rain.......

See you soon at....
