I got these amazing, never been worn French Connection shorts at a second hand store on Friday. They're yellow and they have this pretty tie. They look sort of like something out of The Notebook. And Erin got herself a dress that looks like it came from Aly's closet. Bri got this really adorable purple Talula dress.

My point is second hand and thrift shopping are great. The things you find! Like this one time at Goodwill at the end of grade 8 I found this Esprit dress for about $7. And then, using my excellent *cough* sewing ability, I made it a bit more modern. Erin looks so pretty in it.

I have just been watching BBC News and one of their features was ‘Why shopping online could reward

I have just been watching BBC News and one of their features was ‘Why shopping online could reward’.

The feature really focused on the fact that shoppers who like to spend their money online could also be earning at the same time and used an example from a woman girl would only purchase items once she had sold a few on eBay and made a small profit. Great example of how online shopping can really work well with the current credit crunch. However, I do wish the BBC had highlighted some of the risks involved in online shopping, like CNBC have done.

Yesterday we launched in the US and have already seen some coverage including from the Denver Post and it states we aim to curb the cybercrime of selling suspect second-hand goods. Hopefully there will be more to follow.

Anyway, hopefully the USA launch will be just as successful as the UK. According to the US Census Bureau the population of USA currently stands at 304,381,960 with:
• One birth every 7 seconds
• One death every 13 seconds
• One international migrant (net) every 29 seconds
• Net gain of one person every... 10 seconds

From the global population of internet users 27% are in the US and having read a lot of online articles and blogs e-fencing is proving to be a problem which the US are struggling to control. E-fencing laws have been discussed as being essential to combat organised retail crime. However, CheckMEND should now be an answer to their prayers, so let’s see how it goes.

This is what we do best and we have had plenty of stories from people who didn’t discover CheckMEND in time….

For example; Andrew Gudelajtis, from Mansfield, bought a Vodafone Nokia mobile phone from eBay for his wife. The phone arrived in a sealed box and was sold as being brand new, but after using it for six weeks the mobile phone stopped working.
He decided that he should use CheckMEND to check the IMEI number on its database. The search came back and identified the phone as being stolen or blocked. Unfortunately Andrew was then unable to re-trace the eBay seller and is left with a phone that doesn’t work and at the moment he is pursuing Vodafone to see if they can help – either by unblocking the phone or chasing the seller.

Hopefully he will have some luck at some point, but it is a great example of why you should use ‘CheckMEND before you buy’ or insist on sellers having a CheckMEND report. Or as I mentioned within my last post we should push for eBay to insist all sellers conduct a CheckMEND report!

Any questions – please fire them this way!

I absolutely hate moving.

The packing. The unpacking. The lifting. The moving. All of it.

Moving into a new apartment is particularly challenging for college students.

I moved into my new apartment with about two boxes and two bags in tow and absolutely no furniture and thought of going out and buying all new furniture was not appealing to me, especially on my limited budget.

While my roommates and I did take a trip to get some low-budget essentials, we also utilized some other cheap and green options!

1) USE WHAT YOU ARE GIVEN. The previous tenants of our apartment left behind a lot of furniture. This was sort of a pain in the ass because we expected the apartment to be clean. On the other hand, it also was helpful because we decided to keep some of the furniture. My roommate practically got all her furniture from what was left in her room; she just cleaned it up with a fresh coat of paint.

2) CRAIG'S LIST. Craig's list is a great resource for furniture or whatever and it is super cheap. I bought a full bed with box spring and frame for $50 (the only pain was I had to find a way to pick it up, which I spent $45 on a U-Haul-- so under $100)! Some people may think that is a bit sketchy, but it's like sleeping in a hotel bed, maybe? Whatever, it was in my price range and I am very happy with my purchase.

3) THRIFT SHOPS. Another great source for second-hand knick-knacks and furniture. I bought to chairs for our kitchen table. Even though they don't match, I think they give the place a bit of quirk and personality.

4) FRIENDS. I am a receptacle for friends who are looking to get rid of stuff. This way, you know where the stuff has been plus it usually comes at the right price.

Reusing furniture is a great way to be a little kinder to the earth and save money at the same time!

What I also find interesting is furniture MADE from reused items... Check out this post on Design Blog if you're interested!

What things do you do in your apartment that are both budget-conscious and eco-friendly?? Let me know!

Oh Oh, We also use POM glasses as toothbrush holders.

Writer and poet, Kendra Grant Malone, has recently published some of her journals and the entry for April 28th includes this archetypal account of a clothes shopping trip to a second-hand store in New York City:

After that he took me to the thrift store not far from my apartment and we perused for a bit. I found a beautiful suit coat and matching skirt from the 50’s and put it on. I felt pretty. When I found Zac milling about the men’s shirts he smiled immediately before I could even ask if he liked it. He said something wry and rude but I could see in his face that he appreciated what he saw and he leant me the money to buy it. It is difficult to explain the happiness I felt for a moment when I saw him see me in my brilliant suit coat. It was certainly better than any compliment one could think of.

Trying to envision what a 1950's skirt would look like... Related, here's an interesting bit from the o.e.d. entry for 'skirt':

[its] Metonymic use for "women collectively" is from 1560; slang sense of "young woman" is from 1906; skirt-chaser first attested 1942.

And some history on 1950's women's attire, here:

[...] the 1950's era is known mainly for two silhouettes, that of the full skirt and the pencil slim tubular skirt, with both placing great emphasis on the narrowness of the waist.

* We get what newspapers that we need from my mother. When we are done with them, I use them in the garden.

* Whenever I have something that I do not need, I do one of the following:

Offer it to someone else.

Deliver it to a thrift shop.

Bring it to the food cupboard.

Have a yard sale.

Put it out by the road with a free sign.

* I purchase as much as I can second hand.

* I reuse things when I can.

* I use egg shells in the garden.

* I use water from doing dishes and cooking pasta, eggs and vegetables in the garden.

I know that there is more that I can be doing, and I will work on them things.

Where To Shop

You may be wondering where you should rummage around for second-hand crystal chandeliers. The answer is actually simpler than you would expect. Get your search underway by checking out garage sales in your area. With a bit of luck, you may come across pre-owned chandeliers that are still in tip-top shape.

Other excellent sources of hand-me-down crystal chandeliers include second-hand stores and antique shops. Then again, opting for an antique piece may typically involve a substantial amount of money depending on the craftsmanship and the quality of the materials used.

What To Look For

Similar to shopping for brand new crystal chandeliers, you need to take a number of things into consideration. One of the things you have to avoid is turning into a hasty shopper. Just because you have stumbled upon an elegant crystal chandelier doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to purchase it straight away. You need to allocate an ample amount of time and effort in your quest to finding the most fitting pre-owned crystal chandelier for your home.

20 per cent SD (Supplementary Duty) on vehicles of up to 1500cc

60 per cent SD on vehicles between 1,501 and 2,350cc

100 per cent SD on vehicles between 2,351cc and 3,500cc.

This rates are only applied to used, also called reconditioned, cars. It may change before the budget is put into effect as the Bangladesh Reconditioned Vehicles Importers and Dealers Association (BARVIDA) argues it should be reduced.

BARVIDA believes that raise the taxes on reconditioned car imports will hold back the current progress the economy is experiencing. The connection is that many small and medium businesses rely on the cheaper used car imports to do their business. We will have to see what comes as most vehicles imported come from Japan.

Official Website: www.bay-auc.com
Founded: 1977; Established: 1982
Location: Osaka; Patners: MAA, SUAA
Auctions Held: Wednesday

Bay Auc is a well known auto auction in Japan. One particular advantage this auto auction has over many other auctions is its location. It is situated in an very good location in Osaka, one of the biggest international shipping ports of Japan. The city itself is second only to Tokyo in economical power. You will find that many Japanese used car exporters are either based in the Osaka area or heavily use the Osaka Port for shipping vehicles.

The car auction promises to exhibit at least 3,500 to 4,000 cars every Wednesday starting at 9 AM. It has two simultaneous auction "lanes" running at 400 images an hour. Auction lanes are where they have more than one car being auctioned at any moment. This makes getting through the thousands of cars possible. Bay Auc is not the biggest auction, but they do a good job and have many cars to go through.

Today my mom and I went to a bridal shop in Ottawa only to find a selection of about 20 wedding dres

Today my mom and I went to a bridal shop in Ottawa only to find a selection of about 20 wedding dresses each priced at several thousand dollars. Needless to say, we left as quickly and politely as possible.

Immediately afterward, we went to Value Village where we saw several wedding dresses for about $10. I bet those dresses were worth a hell of a lot more than that when they were first bought. Though, definitely not THAT much because well, they weren't all that great looking unless you want to look like Glinda the good witch of the North.

How can people get away with charging the exorbitant amount that they do for anything wedding related? Unless a dress is actually garnished with jewels, how could it warrant a price tag in the thousands? They're usually not even very nice. This has made me realise, that I could totally make a killing off of wedding stuff. I'm not going to act upon this idea, but, if you made wedding dresses that were just as nice, if not nicer, than the average dress and charged a little less than normal, everyone would be flocking to your store, wouldn't they? I mean, everyone wants to feel like they got a good deal, so why not let them think that? I mean sure it likely only cost about $200 to make the dress and you'd probably sell it for about $800, making it a 300% profit, but, believe me, under $1000 for a wedding dress seams to be a steal.

There really ought to be a consignment store specifically for weddings. Why can't a poor bride feel just as beautiful as a rich bride? Why must the retailers jack up the price JUST because you're only wearing the dress once?

I'm sure I'm not the only one who's thought of this and I wouldn't be surprised if there was one such place in Ottawa even, but I have yet to see it and if anyone out there has, please tell me where it is! I can only afford so much and the wedding industry isn't kind.

So I discovered an awesome new way to shop yesterday - at this weird place called a garage sale. I

So I discovered an awesome new way to shop yesterday - at this weird place called a garage sale. I'd liken it to being like craigslist, but live, where I could touch the stuff and know it was all for real and not crap... It was seriously awesome! I know you're asking what planet I've been on, that garage sales have been happening ever since people have had garages - and probably even before then, but give me a break, I've never really been to one before. I hear garage sale and I automatically think, "oh great, other peoples' junk."

But I went garage sale-ing yesterday with the intention of only buying things I've been wanting to buy from a big box store (you know, those horrible places like target and walmart), and guess what - I found them! I'm all about getting new plants lately. Sometimes I think I'm trying to make my apartment look like a miniature version of the botanical gardens. But hey, I can think of a million things that would be worse for me to be obsessed with, and at least with this obsession I'll be breathing in cleaner air... But with new plants come new pots, and those things are quite expensive if you ask me - $60 for a decent sized ceramic pot? Craziness!

So get this - I bought six, count 'em, six new pots for my plants. And do you know how much I spent? A whole $60 dollars! To go along with my awesome "new" pots, I also bought a bunch of "new" books that are on the current list, some cool vase/bowl decorative things, and some other unnecessary crap to clutter up my apartment.

Oh, and the awesome find of the day? Well I mean besides my awesome pots, was a laundry drying rack - guess how much it cost? Um yeah, free! How freaking cool is that! I've been wanting another one of these so I don't have to use the electric dryer as much, but I'm trying really hard not to buy new stuff... So when I saw this one I was oh so very excited, and just freaking elated when he gave it to me for free! This was a $50 item new.

So now I just saved my self a bunch of money, saved a bunch of crap from the landfill, and saved a bunch of resources from being destroyed to fulfill my materialistic needs (which I'm trying very hard to control thank you very much!). And we all know that we should be recycling and reclaiming materials, and this is one type of recycling that I am all about! Besides all that wonderful stuff, I spent the day outside breathing in fresh air, rather than being in a mall pumping out a/c and wasting all other kinds of resources. I'd have to say that that was a day well spent!

One tip that seemed to be crucial to my garage sale-ing success was going to an uber rich neighborhood... And try to go towards the end of the day, they want to get rid of the stuff at that point and will either just give it to you or charge you practically nothing. Oh and one more tip - wear some sunblock - ouch!

Transparens och "information wan't to be free" går före.

The summer is the perfect time to revise, I have decided today - you're no longer cooped up in your room with nothing to look at. Instead, you are out in the sunshine, feeling it warming up your back whilst still gaining the satisfaction of knowing that you're working and are hopefully going to do well in that exam. I spent the day feeling (for the first time in a long time) totally happy - and despite the ever impending exam (tomorrow morning!) I felt totally unstressed. I did find myself wishing I was in Leamington though - watching back to back episodes of "Come Dine With Me" and hugging Ben. He hasn't seen me totally content in a long time, and I'd have liked the chance to remind him I can be normal, all be it occasionally. But one can't have it all, and I'm not going to complain about feeling good for a whole day for te first time in ages. The smell of BBQ's coming from the field was unbearable though - the crisp smell of chicken, burgers and charcoal is the epitome of summer fun. I had massive meat cravings - but a beautiful feta salad and tomatoes set me off nicely.

Finally I took my revision break messing around with my outfit and taking some photos which I was actually quite pleased with - though I happily admit an all encompassing love of high contrast in photo's, and know that others disagree - oh, and I dug out my beautiful butterfly badge (10p at a bootfair) as I felt it made me sparkly and summery :)

Isn't it lovely?

And here's my pretty photo (Skirt was my mums back in the old days, is completely see-through, and I LOVE it):
