Smokestack El Ropo’s Bedside Reader. A heavy-duty compendium of fables, lore and hot dope tale

Smokestack El Ropo's Bedside Reader. A heavy-duty compendium of fables, lore and hot dope tales, from America's only rolling newspaper.

Smokestack is my favorite anthology. It was put together by Charles "Smokestack El Ropo" Perry in 1971. Charles started working for Rolling Stone in 1968 as a proof reader. He then moved on to be a copy editor and by the end of his career with Rolling Stone in the mid 70s he was associate editor. After he left Rolling Stone he became food writer / critic for the Los Angeles Times. Before that though he wrote The Haight-Ashbury: A History. Covering the 60s psychedelic and rock scene in San Francisco.

(From the back cover of Smokestack)

From the hottentots of 5000 years ago right up to our modern civilization to today, mankind has spent aons sitting around the hearth fire telling tales, passing lore, making up rumours.... crashing. For many in out contemporary world, Rolling Stone has been the hearth at which they've warmed their hands and relit their pipes. The results are here - a garden of olden golden dealing and smoking stories, tales of Morocco and South Africa, of Muskogee and Piccadilly, by such famed writers as Raoul Duke, Charles "Chuck" Alverson, Dr. Elmo Rooney, Ms. Sheila Weller, Tom Clark the poet, Rev. Patrick North, Professor Scot Morris, Mervyn Rees, Wild Bill Rushton "Deadline" Dave Felton, The Black Shadow and Smokestack el Ropo himself.

There are 6 chapters / parts in the book. And each part begins with a fable written by Smokestack El Ropo himself. A really enjoyable, funny read and at the end of the book there are some fun things to try, such as how to play the 12 button telephone, light box, ghost television and much more. Hunter S. Thompson's (Raoul Duke) contribution is from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Again, it's a great read and if you can get your hands on it buy one. It is hard to find though, so if you want to get your hands on a copy email me at hstbooks@gmail.com and I'll point you in the right direction.

“Bettini: alleanze larghe, dall’Udc a Rifondazione”.

It

So far, about 1/3 of the way through, it's good.

It's definitely not at all bad.

It's really hard not to compare writing of this kind to Sedaris, who is just so fucking amazing and a creature unto himself...I think it's ultimately not at all fair to compare this to Sedaris. This is a first-time author in her late twenties with vastly less experience than Sedaris.

I mean, ultimately I'm reading the memoirs of another privileged twentysomething white girl who grew up in the NYC metro area. And by "another" I don't mean Crosley is one in a parade of such writers; I mean that she and I have similar backgrounds, at least as far as our race and gender and education and economic/social class are concerned. So there isn't the surprised delight I feel when I find I relate to someone writing about a life led in circumstances wholly or partly different from my own.

One of her stories does have quite a touching end, and I think it's the best of what the first 1/3 of the book has to offer. The story has to do with a mentally ill man who lives in her apartment building and insists upon taking his door off its hinges each and every time he enters his home. I think the quiet, lonely, haunting conclusion is quite powerful, as is the image of the humiliated man with downcast eyes, enduring the police's questioning after a mix-up over an unrelated 311 noise call.

In that moment, I quite admired her work, and it's more than enough to keep me reading.

Ultimately, I think many (not all--Frank Bruni, Rolling Stone's Kurt Loder, Richard Belzer, Ruth Reichl and Janet Maslin come to mind as notable exceptions, and there are many others) professional critics are people who wanted to do (write, cook, direct, dance, paint, sculpt, design, perform stand-up, act) but couldn't muster the talent or the fortitude or the luck to make it as a creator. Instead, they rely on their ability to heap praise or blame in prettily crafted sentences. The folks who wrote the film "Ratatouille" put this much better than I could, and at present I haven't the energy to dig up that speech.

And I think that it's just as important to note that critics who talk shit about a piece of art are about as reliable as critics who lavish praise on it. In general, your reviews are about who you know, who scratched your back first, whose back you would not be averse to scratching, who you want to win brownie points with, who you want to impress, where you went to college, whose client's administrative assistant your wife slept with after a big PR wine-and-dine-fest at Cipriani, and a bunch of other bullshit that has nothing to do with actual inherent "merit" of the work, because said merit is ultimate unknowable, unquantifiable, and unqualifiable.

Will I keep reading criticism? Yes. Will I keep expressing my opinions about art, onstage and in my humble little not-for-profit-or-any-kind-of-income-at-all Wordpress blog? Yes. Does that mean a whole hell of a lot of anything at all to anyone other than me? No.

In the end, I'm jealous of Sloane Crosley for getting a book published at such a young age and for having such shiny, shiny hair. But I'm also happy that she got said book published, because by all accounts she's a lovely and kind woman, and, FAR MORE IMPORTANTLY, I do see a real talent in her work. And I know how proud I and my family would be if I published a book, and I bet she and her folks feel the same.

So good for you, Sloane C.! I'm going to read the rest of your book.

The ancient Greeks supplied modern civilization with a trove of myths that continue to inspire dream

The ancient Greeks supplied modern civilization with a trove of myths that continue to inspire dreamers like me. When I was reading the July 10-24 issue of Rolling Stone (RS 1056/1057), I was re-introduced to one of them: Hyperborea.

According to the magazine article, Hyperborea was "a magical land free of disease and old age – in order to contemplate the end of the world. Or at least to contemplate the end of Greenland." Actually, the story concerned Greenland and its recent status as the region of the world where global warming is having the most immediate impact on climate change. The story was called "Greenland Melting: the End of the End of the World" and it was written by Mark Binelli. I was hooked from the first image of an ice crack on a snow plain, an image that looked like it had been Photoshopped from an image of that eco-disaster epic "The Day After Tomorrow."

My Rolling Stone with Barack Obama on the cover and the article in question arrived in my mailbox a few days after I received a friend invitation on my MySpace page from a young woman in Greenland, coincidentally. Her name is Nive, and in her mini-biography she noted that she is an (Inuit) Eskimo whose hometown is Nuut. This was pretty intriguing to me; none of my history teachers ever mentioned Greenland during my elementary or high school years. It turned out that Nive lived a rather charmed life and had the cool slideshow of her community and viral video of a New Year's Eve fireworks display to dispel any notions about her heritage. Fortunately, my RS featured a graphic illustration of the western coast of Greenland, and there was the coastal town of Nuut in the southwest corner.

After reading the story, I could vaguely imagine what Nive's life might be like. Pictures show her being pulled across the ice by a dozen or more sled dogs. A couple of frames trace eerie green phosphorescent Aurora Borealis images over a rooftop of a house. The structures in her town were painted colors like the ones used on rides at Legoland: azure blues, bright yellow, green, hot pink, nothing like Southern California's expanses of earth tone or gray tract homes where I live. She sings in a laid back, folky alto voice with a ukelele. In May, she visited California and indulged in a pastime I could completely relate to: browsing at record stores - real independent ones like Amoeba, not poseurs like Wal-Mart or Best Buy. When I first corresponded to Nive and told her that what I did for a living, she wrote back saying, "What is internet marketing?"

When I revisited the Greenland article late tonight, I had just finished watching the sci-fi film 2010 on HDNet that I'd recorded on my DVR. There it was again: Greenland, only this time it was a Russian spacecraft, the fictional Leonov, orbiting around Jupiter's icebound moon Europa. A probe was sent down into one of the moon's craters and that pesky obelisk from the better known Kubrick-directed space epic 2001: A Space Odyssey loomed in the distance. Hyperborea of the future, perhaps.

I had to take this series of happenstance connections to the end of the world to one more place. Out of my CD collection I pulled one of my favorite albums by Tangerine Dream. It's title was, you guessed it, Hyperborea. I didn't know what that title meant until I read the article. It certainly made sense. With one listen, I am transported back to an extremely tranquil memory. I had played the CD using my headphones on a connector flight many years ago out of Denver, Colorado. My wife Debbie and I were traveling back from one of our favorite vacation destinations, Williams Bay, Wisconsin. As we departed from Denver's International Airport in the late afternoon, we ascended into a dreamscape of thunderheads. I put on my headphones and let T-Dream lull me into a waking dream. As Hyperborea played, a massive storm cloud appeared to the west; one of the cloudtops looked almost exactly like the Eagle Nebula, only its colors were bronze, pink and light blue. There was no turbulence. It was blissful.

One of these days I hope to escape for an extended stay in Greenland. I want to see it before the oil and mining companies become permanent, highly polluting fixtures and the towns get overrun with cheap motels and McDonalds restaurants. Maybe I'll meet Nive, introduce her to my family, and possibly catch a glimpse of an Aurora Borealis. It would be cool to have someone like her work in one of my businesses like the Free Online Cash System, too. And you can bet I'll be taking my Hyperborea CD along for the ride. Who knows, maybe I'll watch the icebergs floating lazily in the bay from my Nuut hotel room window. It would make for a stunning view of the end of the world.

Rolling Stone's Jann Wenner shares this and much more in his just-published conversation with Democratic Presidential Candidate Barack Obama.

Hilzoy points us to a very insightful article from Rolling Stone:

By marrying online technology to grass-roots activism, Obama's brain trust mobilized 1.5 million donors, raised more than $250 million, derailed the Clinton juggernaut and built something new in Democratic politics. "The size and scale and sophistication of the Obama enterprise — it's like a multinational corporation compared to the mom-and-pop nonprofits of previous Democratic campaigns," says Simon Rosenberg, president of the progressive think tank NDN and a veteran of Bill Clinton's 1992 run. "And it isn't just bigger — it's a better model, it's more democratic, it taps into the power and passion of everyday people." [...]

Obama began this campaign with a clarity of purpose and a transformative vision for American politics. He wanted to be a game-changer. The team he built had little experience electing a president — and that was exactly the point. He assembled the next generation of stars — creative, diligent and, above all, hungry operatives who did not, like Clinton strategist Mark Penn, believe that they knew how to elect a president based on past successes. Far from being groomed or prodded into fitting someone else's mold of a candidate, Obama built his own team, one tailored to his strengths and capable of compensating for his weaknesses.

The man certainly deserves criticism for his waffling on FISA and his refusal to immediately stand by the full truth of Clark's criticism of McCain, but the fact remains that he is a whole new kind of Presidential candidate. He is not an utterly conventional Democrat.

He is changing the game, and it's fun to see. Definitely check out the full article from Rolling Stone.

91 "Drunkship of Lanterns"
The Mars Volta (2003)

The Mars Volta brought prog rock into the 21st century with this thrilling blast, and Omar Rodriguez Lopez announced himself as one of this decade's great young axmen, mixing Gang of Four riffs with Hendrix virtuosity, Latin rhythms and gallons of reverb.

I recently subscribed to Rolling Stone, mostly to indulge in Matt Taibbi's articles and the best biweekly political barometer in print, "The Good, the Bad, and the Scary." But I cannot abide by their tendency to print what amounts to a transcription of an interview.

It's lazy writing at best, and filler at worst. I don't care if it's by the publisher himself, the indomitable Jann S. Wenner, buyer-out of Disney. I love the cover photo of Barack Obama looking happy and bashful, with only the mailing label obscuring part of his shoulder, but so much more could have been done here.

Do you smell what The Obama is cooking? (That was for all y'all wrestling fans) I can't help think that everytime he does that face.

At first it really bugged me. That face he made. What's he sniffin' for? Anyway, I've come to find that face endearing in the last months. Maybe it's just his bass face. Either way, I've come to admire him and all his hopes for this country.

So today, C was telling me about an idea he had for a cartoon, which I swear I've had the same idea for months. Well, not as a cartoon. It was just something I kept imagining and it made me laugh everytime. It was one of those, "Oh man, I must be the funniest girl in world" sort of things. The point--oh yeah, so I decided to e-mail C some articles I had read to aid him in his new venture. And while digging up these ol' gems I came across a few I had missed.

1) Obama is going to make a cameo on Q-Tip's new album The Rennaisance (its out this month, no?)

2) Bob Dylan endorsed Obama earlier last month, saying, "we've got this guy out there now who is redefining the nature of politics from the ground up...Barack Obama." Who are you to go against Bobby D.? Not me.

3) The Presidential Playlist: Obama appears on the cover of the new Rolling Stone and talks to Jann Wenner about being a Stevie Wonder geek, Bruce Springsteen, and whatever is on his iPod. He's got like 30 Dylan songs and the entire Blood on the Tracks album on there. Thanks RS, I can sleep better knowing what's gonna be bumpin through the halls of the White House once Oh-Bama is prez, yo. Schweet.

Okay, I'm gonna just throw this out there cause it's been in my head for a long time. Obama, I know you don't like to play the "race" card, but when you get elected prez and walk out to give your victory speech, please please please, walk out to the tune of James Brown's, "Say it Loud-I'm Black and I'm Proud." And then do the dance. It would make all my wildest dreams come true.

Ugh, With Yo' bad self:

I used the following quote from an article on McCain in the recent issue of Rolling Stone is my recent sermon Lord of the Story. Rolling Stone editor, Mark Taibbi rips into Joel Osteen while preserving the notion that there are more palatable forms of Christianity. In other words, he doesn’t throw out the Christian baby with the dirty health and wealth water.

Of all the vile, fake, lying-ass, money-grubbing, shyster scumbags on the face of this planet, there is perhaps none more loathsome than Osteen, a human haircut with plastic baseball-size teeth who has made a fortune selling the appalling only-in-America idea that terrestrial greed is actually a form of Christian devotion.

This quote was sparked by McCain listing Osteen as his most inspirational author, pretty sad. If Osteen is what inspires McCain, I’ve got some serious reservations about his presidential groundedness.

“

What it is What is is ? Come check the noise / Its the new black version of the Beastie Boys” proclaims Mikey Rocks and Chuck Inglish on “One, Two” a track from their first full length album When Fish Ride Bicycles. Cool Kids are a two-man, or rather two “kid,” group out of the Midwest who began collaborating when Mikey Rocks (real name Antoine Reed) found a beat on the internet produced by Evan “Chuck Inglish” Ingersol. Part Eric B & Rakim, part Spank Rock, and yes, part Beastie Boys, the Cool Kids bring us back to the funky drum-snare beats and carefree lyrics of the late 80s and early 90s, more likely to rap about “Bassment Parties [sic]“and BMX bikes than the tired, oft empty themes of guns, bitches, and drugs. The duo continues to cut their teeth having toured with M.I.A., and their tracks have completed the now standard cycle having appeared in TV (Entourage), commercials (Rhapsody), and video games (NBA Live 08, MLB 2K8). Whether they can tap into the sustainability of the Beastie Boys is another question, but remember what you learned in grade school: never bet against the Cool Kids. For more, read Rolling Stone’s artists to watch and check out the Cool Kids’ page. ** UPDATE - a newly released mixtape, "That's Stupid," can also be found below.
