Superstar music master Danny Elfman (Hellboy II) has just been announced as the composer for Universal's forthcoming remake of The Wolf Man. Elfman, who's best known for his frequent collaborations with director Tim Burton as well as his theme for The Simpsons, is a good choice in my opinion, in addition to being a very obvious one (he did score Sleepy Hollow after all). I for one am looking forward to what musical wonders Mr Elfman will come up with.

The Wolf Man, a remake of the 1941 classic, will premiere on April 3rd in the US, UK and Denmark, with the rest of the world following shortly. Footage from the film was shown at this year's Comic-Con, to very enthusiastic response. The premise of the film, which was written by Andrew Kevin Walker (hey, Sleepy Hollow!) and David Self (Road To Perdition), goes like this, according to Wikipedia:

Set in the late 1880s, the film keeps the plotline of the original, with Lawrence Talbot meeting his father following the death of his brother. The film details events during Lawrence's past that led to his estrangement from his father (which includes Gwen), and the setting is expanded from Blackmore (now identified as the village from the original) to London.[3] The official synopsis states Talbot was traumatized by his mother's death as a child, while Gwen Conliffe is his brother's fiancée. Following his brother's disappearance, Talbot hunts a murderer, which turns out to be a werewolf, and the curse is passed on.

The film was originally to be directed by the über-talented Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo), but he left very early on due to budget disagreements, with the pretty competent Joe Johnston (Hidalgo) taking over as helmsman. Benicio Del Toro (Things We Lost In The Fire) plays the lead character and is joined Anthony Hopkins (Beowulf), Hugo Weaving (V For Vendetta) and Emily Blunt (Charlie Wilson's War).

The Wolf Man will be Universal's third attempt at resurrecting their old horror franchises, following the success of The Mummy and the failure of Van Helsing (a seriously underrated movie by the way). It seems as though The Wolf Man, which features makeup from maestro Rick Baker (Norbit), will be a decidedly more serious-minded affair than those movies, which turned away some moviegoers with their more light, fun approach to the source material.

Well, it’s been a good year at the movies so far. There are only a few films that I’m in

Well, it's been a good year at the movies so far. There are only a few films that I'm interested in seeing this Summer (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Pineapple Express, and Tropic Thunder)

My Top 5 for 2008 So Far:

1. The Dark Knight
2. Wall-E
3. American Teen
4. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
5. Iron Man

That said, I'm really looking forward to Oscar season this year. I have a feeling that the Academy Awards are going to be insane with competition. Last year was good, but this will probably be better. This afternoon I hunted down the upcoming films for the rest of the year.

My Top 11 Must-Sees:

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Directed By: David Fincher
Starring: Brad Pitt / Cate Blanchett / Tilda Swinton

Zodiac was royally shafted at the Academy Awards this year. I thought it should have been nominated for picture, adapted screenplay, supporting actor (Robert Downey Jr) and visual effects. It probably wouldn't have won any, but it should have had some recognition.

That said, I think Benjamin Button is going to get Fincher back in the game.

Burn After Reading
Directed By: Ethan Coen / Joel Coen
Starring: Brad Pitt / George Clooney / John Malkovich / Tilda Swinton / Frances McDormand

After the amazing No Country for Old Men last year, it looks like the Coens are back in action with a dark screwball comedy (their forte) with a great ensemble cast. It will be nice to see Frances McDormand in a Coen film again.

(Apple Trailers)

Revolutionary Road
Directed By: Sam Mendes
Starring: Leondardo DiCaprio / Kate Winslet / Kathy Bates

Looks like a Titanic cast reunion. Add in the director of American Beauty and Road to Perdition and you have an awesome combination.

The Soloist
Directed By: Joe Wright
Starring: Robert Downey Jr. / Jamie Foxx / Catharine Keener

Robert Downey Jr. has been in an insane number of films the last few years. That's all.

Australia
Directed By: Baz Luhrmann
Starring: Hugh Jackman / Nicole Kidman / David Wenham

Quite simply, this looks epic, and I do not want to miss seeing it on the silver screen. It may end up being the next Lawrence of Arabia for all we know. And you can't go wrong with Hugh Jacman.

Appaloosa
Directed By: Ed Harris
Starring: Viggo Mortensen / Renée Zellweger / Jeremy Irons / Ed Harris

As long as it's better than Hidalgo. Solid cast, and the amazing Ed Harris.

Lakeview Terrace
Directed By: Neil LaBute
Starring: Patrick Wilson / Kerry Washington / Samuel L. Jackson

What can I say? The preview sold me. This looks to be quite the tense film.

Body of Lies
Directed By: Ridley Scott
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio / Russell Crowe

Since 2002, DiCaprio hasn't disappionted me once as an actor. He just keeps plugging away. With 8 films in the next two years, he's going to be a busy man. And to top it off, the preview reminded me a little bit of Michael Mann's Heat, which is never a bad thing.

I've heard really good things about the Shanley's play, which this is based on. And what a great cast.

I have no particular inclination to be tagged, but despite my natural non-chalance tags just keep falling on my head. This time it's Ms Nerd who's done it. With due apologies to her for taking up this meme a bit late (as I was busy putting out my diary on the net), I begin right away. The tag is:

No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they’re not any good, but they must be songs you’re really enjoying now, shaping your spring summer. Post these instructions in your blog along with your seven songs. Then tag seven other people to see what they’re listening to.

Here's my list:

1. Lux Aeterna (Requiem For A Dream) - Clint Mansell's composition is undoubtedly a haunting piece which rings in my ears for days together. Listen to it here.

2. Cheyenne's theme (Once Upon A Time In The West) - Ennio Morricone's score for Cheyenne is better than that of Harmonica. Listen here.

3. Haara (Aamir) - Undisputedly the best Hindi soundtrack of the year. Amit Trivedi has done a marvellous job of bringing together different genres, appealing to a wide variety of listeners. Listen here.

4. Bandya Re (Khuda Ke Liye) - Another of Bulleh Shah's compositions, it does remind one of Bullah Ki Jaana. A delightful fusion of folk and rock. Check it out here.

5. Jajabara (Jajabara) - Akshaya Mohanty's '75 piece has become a motif of Oriya film music. The first Oriya song to be influenced from the west, it sounds a bit old fashioned, but not if one gets the lyrics. Listen here.

6. Sorutihudu Maliya Maligi (The Raghu Dixit Project) - Penned by the Kannada saint Shishunala, it brings out the emotions of a poor helpless man. Raghu Dixit has done wonders with this song. Listen here.

7. Theme of Road To Perdition (Road To Perdition) - By Thomas Newman, it's mostly orthodox and traditional music that is powerful and moving. Listen to it here.

And as always, I don't tag anyone.

Breaking and entering"

In theory there is an embarrassment of riches with the creative team behind Sleuth: Kenneth Branagh

In theory there is an embarrassment of riches with the creative team behind Sleuth: Kenneth Branagh directing, celebrated playwright Harold Pinter adapting, and Michael Caine and Jude Law in front of the camera. The levels of experience boded well. However, theory and reality do not always go hand in hand. The end product is a disappointing waste of time which adds nothing to the 1972 original.Law’s Milo Tindle has been invited by best-selling crime novelist Andrew Wyke (Caine) to his country pile, a dead-tech, post-modernistic bullshit house (to quote Al Pacino’s Vincent Hanna in Heat) – minimalist and gadget-laden. Wyke has been made a cuckold by his wife’s affair with Tindle, and she now wants to marry his paramour. Wyke’s motivations in requesting a meeting are unnervingly ambiguous to those who’ve not seen the original. In essence, very little has been altered, bar the ending which feels forced in its apparent desire to be different to the source. The game playing device of the original has been replaced with a surveillance motif that tries to be contemporary and relevant.

Caine’s performance is gripping due to his usual charisma, this time tinged with untrustworthy menace, and the experimental nature of his taking on the opposite role from the original where he played Tindle to Laurence Olivier’s Wyke. Production design is also a stand out; the eye-catching interiors are like porn for the Property Ladder-set. Law is unconvincing though, not up to his best performances in Road to Perdition and Cold Mountain. The original was about class, masculinity and vanity, a film more of its time than timeless. Those themes have only been superficially updated, instead of overhauled for a modern audience. The CCTV idea seems to be a prop rather than a metaphor, and the nature of celebrity barely touched upon.

The remake frenzy currently gripping the multiplex, knowing no-end, is deeply frustrating. Hemanth Kissoon

Road to Perdition is one of those movies that's heavy on mood and atmosphere but makes you stop and think every few minutes, "What the heck are these people doing in this movie?"

Tom Hanks is hitman Michael Sullivan, in the employ of local tough guy John Rooney (Paul Newman). Sullivan's very effective at his job, and he's equally effective in keeping his true occupation from his
young sons. On one fateful night, however, son Michael (Tyler Hoechlin) stows away on one of his father's business trips and witnesses a slaying. Knowing the boy has seen far too much, Rooney's own son decides to kill him - but gets the wrong boy (not to mention his mother).

So the Michaels young and old are on the run. Sullivan wants to get back at the man who killed his family, and that journey can only lead to one man - John Rooney.

There are several problems with this movie. The first is - surprisingly - in the casting. Hanks isn't wrong for the part of Michael Sullivan, but there's also no real need for him to play the part, either. He's okay, but he's just not as effective as Tom Hanks usually is. For someone who's such a great and accomplished actor, Hanks had no need to take on this role, which conceivably could have been played by most actors in America.

Paul Newman isn't any better. I know, sacrilege! Newman's been in Hollywood for a long, long time, and he's one of my all-time favorite performers. But the man's getting old. I don't mean he's aging gracefully, although he had been doing that for many years. I mean he looks old - in this movie, he looked very haggard and weary, as if he had been working on the movie nonstop for seven months. There's none
of that old fire and passion we've come to expect from Newman. There's one scene in particular near the end in which his character confronts Hanks's character, and - no lie here - he sounded like he was on Death's door.

Oh, I know. He IS an old man. Newman's 78 years old, now. But I've never seen him look and sound as bad as he did in this movie. The last movie I saw him in was Message in a Bottle (1999), in which he played Kevin Costner's cantankerous father. And he was very, very good in that movie. He was funny, self-deprecating, engaging, and magnificent - aging gracefully, if you will. But this movie's like the anathema to Message.

Imagine, a movie with Hanks and Newman! New guard and old guard! It should have been a real meeting of the thespians, a chance to compare the styles of two of the greatest ever to walk onto the silver screen. But it's a major dissapointment, this acting summit. Hanks is earnest but a little insincere, and Newman looks like he's walking in his sleep.

What makes this movie even more disappointing is the fact that it was directed by Sam Mendes, who wrote and directed American Beauty (1999). This is his first film since Beauty, but there's none of the nuances of that masterpiece evident in this one. Was he just happy to work with acting legends?

There are some interesting, almost random funny moments, as when Michael, Jr. learns to drive the getaway car (they're on the lam, remember), but overall it's a bleak, uninspiring film. At least the title is appropriate, as "Perdition" means "eternal damnation," which is what watching this movie sometimes felt like.
