I just checked out the the official voting site  today and good news for the Philippines, here are the latest official ranks of our nominees:

#1 Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park
#4 Chocolate Hills
#5 Tubbataha Reef
#10 Mayon Volcano

All our four nominees have been shortlisted in the Top 77. 

According to the website:

Voting for nominees will continue through July 7, 2009. Then the New7Wonders of Nature Panel of Experts, under the leadership of Prof. Federico Mayor, former Director-General of UNESCO, will review the top 77 nominees and choose the 21 finalists, to be announced on 21 July 2009. These finalists will then be put to popular vote.

I hope we get to keep the good ranks and that all four of them land on the top 7!

The Chocolate Hills are probably Bohol's most famous tourist attraction. They look like giant mole hills, or as some say, women's breasts, and remind us of the hills in a small child's drawing. Most people who first see pictures of this landscape can hardly believe that these hills are not a man-made artifact. However, this idea is quickly abandoned, as the effort would surely surpass the construction of the pyramids in Egypt. The chocolate hills consist of are no less than 1268 hills (some claim this to be the exact number). They are very uniform in shape and mostly between 30 and 50 meters high. They are covered with grass, which, at the end of the dry season, turns chocolate brown. From this color, the hills derive their name. At other times, the hills are green, and the association may be a bit difficult to make.

Legend has it that the hills came into existence when two giants threw stones and sand at each other in a fight that lasted for days. When they were finally exhausted, they made friends and left the island, but left behind the mess they made. For the more romantically inclined is the tale of Arogo, a young and very strong giant who fell in love with an ordinary mortal girl called Aloya. After she died, the giant Arogo cried bitterly. His tears then turned into hills, as a lasting proof of his grief.

However, up to this day, even geologists have not reached consensus on how they where formed. The most commonly accept theory is that they are the weathered formations of a kind of marine limestone on top of a impermeable layer of clay. If you climb the 214 steps to the top of the observation hill near the complex, you can read this explanation on a bronze plaque.

How to get there

Plenty of tourist guides and tour operators will be happy to bring you to the chocolate hills, either as a separate trip or as part of a day tour. However, if you want to go here on your own, from Tagbilaran, you will have to go the integrated bus terminal in Dao and catch a bus going to Carmen. If you look like a stranger, you will have a hard time not finding one. At the entrance of the bus terminal people will point you to the right bus. Make sure it is the first one to leave, and ask the driver to drop you off at the Chocolate Hills complex, about 4 kilometers before the town of Carmen. From there it is a 10 minute walk along a road winding up to the complex.

To get back to Tagbilaran, you will have to walk back to the main road, and wait for a bus to pass by. The last bus from Carmen to Tagbilaran leaves at four P.M. Alternatively, you can use the services of the motorcyclists who often wait here for tourist, and ride 'habal-habal,' or motorbike taxi.

If you're coming from Tubigon (arriving from Cebu by boat), a few buses go to Carmen daily, but sometimes you'll have to wait for some time for the bus to fill up. When you arrive in Carmen, you can catch the next bus or jeepney in the direction of Bilar, Loay or Tagbilaran, or ask a 'habal-habal' driver to bring you to the Chocolate Hills Complex.

Where to stay

If you would like to stay in the Chocolate Hills, you have very little choice. The only facility is the Government run Chocolate Hills resort. Currently, this hotel is undergoing renovation and extension, but, since funds have run out, work on this is suspended, and you'll have to deal with the mess of a half-completed resort. However, the staff are friendly, and if you stay here overnight, seeing the sun rise over this bizarre landscape is worth the inconvenience. The place also has a still functional and maintained swimming pool, which is behind the unfinished building, a little bit downhill.

Hoy 15 de Julio de 2008, siendo aproximadamente las 15:00 horas, el Lago de Atitlán se encuentra en el puesto No. 35 del Live Ranking del Concurso de New 7 Wonders of Nature. Casi un mes despues ha caido 12 posiciones; para poder clasificar a la siguiente etapa el Lago de Atitlan debe encontrarse entre los primeros 21 nominados.

Para agregar los botones a su sitio web, perfil de la red social a la que pertenezcan (Hi5, MySpace, Facebook, etc) basta con agregar el codigo abajo de cada boton e insertarlo en la seccion donde deseen que aparezca. Los botones tienen un link al sitio Guate Maravilla Natural, sitio en el que pueden encontrar informacion sobre como votar si aun no lo han hecho.

El primero de los botones, es un gif animado, el cual no se porque no se puede visualizar en IExplorer 7 (por eso es mejor usar Firefox : ) ).  Los otros son graficos simples asi que deberian visualizarse en cualquier navegador web. Los botones se encuentran bajo una licencia Creative Commons, es por eso que aparece el nombre de este blog en cada uno de ellos ;P, pero esto no es ningun impedimento para compartirlos.

Me gustaria que fueran unos botones mas artisticos (cuaquier parecido con los banners de Firefox, Calendar de Mac Os, Post It notas adesivas, Polaroid, etc. es mera coincidencia); pero como dice una amiga: -Los arquitectos no tienen capacidad artistica, solo hacen cosas cuadradas. (Supongo que en el "artisitico ambiente" en el que ella se desenvuelve no ha oido de Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind, Santiago Calatrava, Oscar Niemeyer, por mencionar algunos.)  Y pues yo soy estudiante de Arquitectura (lloro sobre el teclado de mi laptop), pero creo que todavia tengo salvacion, pueden checar mi "incompleto" portafolio para mas informacion.

Perdon por este ultimo parrafo, para quienes me conocen saben que me gusta el sarcasmo.

Espero que les gusten y les sean utiles estos botones, y que apoyemos al Lago de Atitlán.

Escribo este post un poco preocupado, hace menos de un mes les hablaba que el Lago de Atitlán se encontraba en el puesto 23 del Live Ranking del Concurso New 7 Wonders of Nature.

Hoy revisando el sitio, me encuentro que el Lago de Atitlán a bajado 5 puestos y se ubica en el lugar 28. Recordemos solo los primeros 21 candidatos pasan a la segunda fase.

Asi que los invito nuevamente a votar por el Lago de Atitlán que participa para convertirse en una de las Nuevas 7 Maravillas Naturales.

Tubbataha Reef

PHILIPPINES

Tubbataha Reef is an atoll coral reef in the Sulu Sea that belongs to the Philippines. It is a marine sanctuary protected as Tubbataha Reef National Marine Park. The reef is composed of two atolls, North and South Reefs. Each reef has a single small islet that protrudes from the water. The atolls are separated by a deep channel 8 kilometers wide. Over one thousand species, including many that are endangered, can be found at on the reef. These include manta rays, lionfish, tortoises, clownfish and sharks.

Chocolate Hills

The Chocolate Hills is an unusual geological formation in Bohol, Philippines. It is composed of around 1,268 perfectly cone-shaped hills, all about the same size, spread over an area of more than 50 sq km The hills are covered in green grass that turns brown during the dry season, giving them the name ''Chocolate Hills.''

Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park

PHILIPPINES

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is located about 50 km north of the city of Puerto Princesa, Palawan, Philippines. It features a limestone karst mountain landscape with an 8.2 km. navigable underground river. A distinguishing feature of the river is that it winds through a cave before flowing directly into the South China Sea. It includes major formations of stalactites and stalagmites, and several large chambers. The lower portion of the river is subject to tidal influences. The underground river is reputed to be the world's longest. At the mouth of the cave, a clear lagoon is framed by ancient trees growing right to the water's edge. Monkeys, large monitor lizards, and squirrels find their niche on the beach near the cave.

Mayon Volcano

PHILIPPINES

Mayon Volcano is an active volcano on the Filipino island of Luzon, 15 km northwest of Legazpi City.It is classified by volcanologists as a stratovolcano (composite volcano). Its symmetric cone was formed through alternate pyroclastic and lava flows. Mayon is the most active volcano in the country, having erupted over 47 times in the past 400 years, and is a part of what is called the Pacific Ring of Fire.

THE SEARCH for the “New 7 Wonders of Nature” has a latest nominee from Palawan and it’s the Puerto Princesa St. Paul Subterranean River National Park (formerly St. Paul Subterranean River National Park), a declared World Heritage Site.

Located some 81 kilometers north of the center of the city at Sitio Sabang, Barangay Cabayugan, the park was nominated as a natural wonder in the search for its remarkable cathedral-like rock formations, awe-inspiring limestone features, pointed to the sky like Damocle’s swords, amazing collection of flora and fauna and the mountain range that cradles beneath it an 8.2 navigable subterranean river, considered to be the longest in the world.

Mayor Edward S. Hagedorn said the subterranean river deserves to be included in the list of N7W’ Top 77 nominees because it’s a natural wonder that’s unique and matchless in characteristics in the world.

“It would be all Filipinos pride if the underground river is also included in the New 7 Wonders of nature like Tubbataha, which I am sure will no longer be shaken off the Top 10,” he said.

Currently, the subterranean park ranks lowest at more than 200 in the Top 77, but Hagedorn is positive that if voters will check out the World Heritage Site on the Internet, they would know why it should be one of the most notable wonders of nature.

Hagedorn said that records would show that tourist arrivals in the park continue to increase, with 63,271 visitors recorded in 2007, increasing by 17,003 or 36.75 percent compared to 46,268 visitors in 2006.

Meanwhile, the Chocolate Hills of Bohol and Palawan’s Tubbataha Reef National Marine Park are continuously climbing to the top of the worldwide search for the “New 7 Wonders of Nature” as Palaweños and Filipinos all over the globe continue to vote for them.

As of April 17, 2008, Chocolate Hills is on the No. 8 spot and Tuibbaha on No. 9. Mayon Volcano in Bicol is not back yet on the list of Top 77.

The No. 1 position is still being held by Cox’ Bazar in Bangladesh, one of the world’s longest natural sandy sea beaches stretching 120 kilometers, including mud flats. The No. 2 spot is also being held by Bangladesh with nominee Ganges River, a major river in the Indian subcontinent, flowing east through the eponymous plains of northern India into Bangladesh. THE PROVINCIAL government, led by Governor Joel T. Reyes, has embarked on a serious campaign for Filipinos all over Palawan and the world to vote for the UNESCO-declared World Heritage Site Tubbataha Reefs National Marine Park to be included in the search for the “New 7 Wonders of Nature”

As of April 3 this year, Tubbataha is already on the 16^th place in the “live ranking” and its continuously climbing. The top place is taken by Ha Long Bay in Vietnam; followed by Phong Na Ke Bang National Park and Fansipan Mountain also in Vietnam. Cox’s Beach Bar in Bangladesh, India which used to be No. 1 fell in the 4^th place.

Chocolate Hills in Bohol is on the 14th place, while Mayon Volcano in Legaspi, Bicol is on the 49^th.

The Provincial Information Office (PIO) is leading the provincial government campaign by paying radio and other media plugs urging Palaweños to vote for Tubbataha in the municipality of Cagayancillo in the Sulu Sea.

Information officer Rolando E. Bonoan, Jr. said being home to the world famous marine park, the provincial government and the residents of Palawan are proud that it is included as a nominee to the worldwide search for the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

He added that their campaign is directed at encouraging residents in Puerto Princesa and Palawan who have internet access to vote for Tubbataha to make as one of the seven wonders of nature.

The members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan have committed too to support the campaign by encouraging Filipino and foreigner friends alike abroad to campaign for Tubbataha and the two other Philippine natural wonders – Chocolate Hills and Mayon Volcano.

Private individuals, as well as businesses in Puerto Princesa, have also joined the Tubbataha campaign bandwagon. One of them is famous Kalui Restaurant owner Louie Oliva, who launched a campaign setting up “voting precincts” exclusively for Tubbataha.

Even the local media are carrying banner stories of Tubbataha on their front pages and as headlines of their radio and television stories to join the campaign. All these in response to Angeligue Songco’s, the manager of the Tubbataha Management Office (TMO), call to position the marine park to the wonders of nature list.

“We believe that it is a feat that we too can accomplish if only we can muster enough support from every Filipino with a sense of national pride,” Songco said.

Filipinos can still vote for Tubbataha until December 31, 2008, after which the top 77 nominees will be submitted to a panel of experts that will put together a shortlist of 21 finalists by January 2009.

A second round of popular voting for the 21 finalists will then ensue and last until the end of 2009 — with the top seven nominees being officially declared the “New Seven Wonders of the World” by the year 2010.

The list of nominees and the mechanics for voting are posted on the poll’s official website www.new7wonders.com. The search is organized by the Unesco (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) and the non-profit New Seven Wonders Foundation, which also undertook the “New Seven Wonders of the World” search that ended last year. Ето и повече информация за самата кампания - това е продължение на кампанията за новите 7 чудеса на света, която приключи на 07.07.07 в Лисабон с грандизона церемония, на която бяха обявени победителите. До края на 2008 година ще се предлагат номинации. В началото на 2009 година ще бъдат избрани 21 финалисти и ще бъдат предложени за гласуване през 2009 и 2010. В средата на 2010 година, ще бъдат обявени избраните 7 природни чудеса.

По принцип не си падам много по всякакви подобни класации - 7-те, 10-те или 100-те най-незнамкаквоси... В случая идеята е, да се вдига повече шум около езерата и по този начин да се попречи на плановете за застрояване на района...

When I am writing this post (January3, 2008; 11:37 am) the top two places of New 7 Wonders of Nature Nominees are held by Bangladesh. Cox's Bazaar is in 1st place and Sundarban is in 2nd place. [source] Thanks to all of you, who made this possible.

All my readers are familiar with the page Vote Cox’s Bazaar and ShundorBon of my blog from October 2007. Before creating that page I prepared a poster for supporting Cox's Bazaar and Sundarban for New7Wonders of Nature Nominees and placed that on my personal website. When I first involved myself with this campaign, I had never imagine that Bangladesh will be the top listed after several months. Of course it is our credit to show the world that what we can do. Thanks to all the Bangladeshi and people from other countries who made this possible.

Now onward, the task is more difficult. We've to make sure that Bangladesh will held her position in the top list. So people keep casting your vote for Cox's Bazaar and Sundarban. It is our duty to keep Bangladesh in the top of the list of the nominees.
