Yes! It finally arrived, last Monday I got my hands on my new N810.
There were a few tense moments, initially plugging it in it refused to turn on... I started to think my £160 bargain on e-bay might be an expensive hassle. However I decided to try one of my other chargers, and everything came to life! Oh the joy.
So it is just the charger with it is broken. It delivers enough charge for things to think they're charging, but it never steps up to actually charge.
I suspect the seller may have thought the device itself was broken... Why do I think this uncharitable thing? Well when it booted up, all of their settings were still in place, e-mail, facebook, e-bay, etc., etc. Someone suggested I could have arranged to sell my old 770 back to them for more than I paid... tempting, but I figure I got what I want for a great price no matter what they thought.

So that was last Monday. And now I've had a few days to enjoy it.
It is fantastic, better than the 770 in every way I wanted. It's faster, can handle multiple apps open much easier. It doesn't stall when one app is busy.
The slide out thumb board is great. It takes some getting used to, but has allowed me to write this whilst waiting for Kat in various shops. And I'm now in the queue at Boswells

...And now I'm not...

Anyway, the camera, as you can see is not great. It's a web cam rather than a camera for taking stills.

Although you can run Skype, they do not currently support video... but that's OK because Gizmo does. Are you listening Skype?? But for video support I'd never even have looked at Gizmo. Now it's installed on two machines, and i will set up my mum next time I visit...

The device comes with 2gig internal memory, in addition to 256mb flash. And space for an 8gig external mini SD.
In one week I've already cloned the OS from the flash to the 2G so that I have more application install space.
And I got an 8G card so I have plenty of storage.
The process of cloning was made fairly trivial by
penguinbait
My only issue was having to disable the extended swap settings and reboot before the install tools could do their thing.
This process kept all my apps and settings, but gives me loads more room to play with applications. Thanks penguinbait.

My one gripe is not being able to connect at work. But even that has a promising outlook.
Kalle Valo has announced an opensource wifi driver
Which will open up all the connectivity enjoyed by my laptop, so very happy about that.

Other nice things that I've found.
E-mail notification, it automatically checks for mail, even without the mail app running, and provides blinking notifications, but it does it nicely. It shows up the mail titles, and gives a way to open it or close the notification.

Bluetooth file transfer, having paired my mobile phone I found it showed up in file manager. From there i could navigate the phone's filesystem, and stream the mp3's from there straight to the audio player.

But mostly it's speed make all things better, browsing is reasonable, youtube works, facebook works.
All the cool multimedia apps run at sensible speed.

If the rumours of a 3g capable variant turn to reality I may have to upgrade, but for now I'm one happy nokia fan-boy.

Saw this story on Ars Technica earlier today. XOHM is going live in Baltimore, MD. I am still patiently waiting for it to show up in the greater Boston area. Ever since I have been testing my WiMAX capable N810 I have been itching to try this out. Right now I have to remain happy with wi-fi networks and 3G via Blue Tooth connectivity, which I don't use often because it increases the battery drain both on my E71 and the N810.

When I scan the available networks i would see the XOHM icon pop up in the connection selection box. So it is out there hiding somewhere. On a few occasions I have been able to maintain a sustained connection. But 99% of the time the connection gets dropped immediately. I guess it recognizes my device is not an authorized one. :-) Sprint XOHM site says it will soon be available in Boston area. May be one of these days it will be for real. The service plan they have going seems to be decent with $45/month with no subscription contract, with all you can eat data. Stuff like Gmail supported email account comes packaged with it. We have already heard stories about Google and other ISPs talking to Sprint. Not sure how the pricing works with voice services; whether its a data only service or are they bundling voice services on top of it. I guess I can install Skype, Gizmo etc. on my device, but unless I have a for-fee subscription account to them I can't make a call to a real phone involving a PSTN/PBX in the middle.

But I think besides the data speeds I really like the *idea* of being able to use devices built on open platforms like Maemo, Android, etc. and not having to deal with the proverbial operator (or Apple) walled gardens. Assuming I am able to buy them unlocked. Unlike unlocked iPhones which are selling in Hongkong for almost a grand, devices like N810 do not cost that much, granted they are lacking in the slickness department.

More than being worried about being locked to a provider's network, what I really want is the ability to easily download and tryout 3rd party apps. I can point my N810 app manager to a repository and check out the latest apps out there. I like the idea of being able to treat my handheld device like a PC and have unfettered access to applications and services. XOHM has a service option for home use and if XOHM@home does not control what I download and install on my home PCs, then they should adopt the same philosophy for my mobile device and not cripple my application manager directly on indirectly. Much has been said about Apple's tight control of its Application store. Android apparently is going to have its own marketplace too. Nokia seem to be lacking in this department. But I have paid for and installed a number of 3rd party S60 apps from Handango and other sites. Needs little more legwork (or keyboard work) I guess. Application stores have a purpose in letting people easily discover applications of interest and there may be applications that can compromise the integrity of a device and the network it sits on. We have already seen and grown up through that in our desktop realm. We the consumers are much more savvy now. If we are really moving into an era of mobile internet that is open and ecourages innovation of the masses (crowd-sourcing is the buzzword I believe) I would rather see us consumers better educated and better equipped with tools to deal with threats rather than being told what app we can or cannot install. I would much rather have access to premium and open respositories out there and being able to decide what works for me and what does not. And I am willing to pay a bit more for my devices to be able to do that.

May be majority of the consumers don't feel the need for this level of openness and may be they are happy with whatever apps they are told to use. But I strongly believe that attitude will change over time as we move into an era where seem to be going from cradle to grave with mobile devices in our hands.

XOHM being new, Sprint will probably do all it can and make things as unfettered and open as possible to attract us. But I wonder, once the usage picks up and p2p apps start flooding the network, whether all that openness will last too long. Next month onward Comcast will start putting cap on my downloads. Will have to see how that works out.

Update: Yeah looks like the language is in place after all for the *caps*. Wonder what constitutes heavy use.

Nokia-N810-23-14:~# ps -ef|grep gvm

This is on the intenal memory, so i want to change it to external SDHC.

It is very simple, do as following.

Backup current files under .gvm (you can use tar from terminal) and remove .gvm

Make directory "gvm" on the external SDHC (e.g. /media/mmc1/gvm )

Restore files to the directory

make symbolic link from external memory to original memory (ln -sf /media/mmc1/gvm /home/user/.gvm)

Have Fun!! ;-)

BTW, I use mmc1 with not vfat but ext2. format on a Linux Box.

On the Japanized GVM ROM, Japanese input method "POBox" installation and key customization to change FEP on/off.

---------------------------

POBox for Palm OS 5
http://homepage.mac.com/yasseima/FileSharing14.html

POBoxFep.prc

POBoxFepPanel.prc

Internet Tablet Talk - Note Pad on N810 using Garnet VM -
http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20558&goto=nextnewest

GUI -> FEPSwitchを使用

Key ->

PARENTAL ADVISORY EXPLICT CONTENT - project-enigma FEPSwitch -
http://www.project-enigma.jp/wiki/index.cgi?page=products%2FFEPSwitch

PalmTech - DispKey -
http://homepage1.nifty.com/abby/PalmTech/DispKey/DispKey.html

http://www.geocities.com/nagamatu/KeyReplace/

chr 0020 ⇒ 011b

code 0000 ⇒ 0000

mod 0001 ⇒ 0008

Shift + SpaceでPOBoxのon/offができます。

On the GVM, the Hotsync with PC fails when some palmwares have been installed to the GVM. The root cause is backup operation *.prc files on hotsyncing. The workaround is posted in the internet tablet talk GVM beta2 section. Thanks roblynn!!

Enjoy the great N810 Palm Life!! ;-)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

(The following is in Japaese, sorry)

-- Backing up DateBk6 to C:\Program Files\palmOne\xxxx\Backup\DateBk6.PRC
Backup synchronization failed

HotSync Error: Connection is lost (6410)

Internet Tablet Talk - Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2 -
http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?p=197996

nosleep software - Filez -
http://nosleepsoftware.sourceforge.net/index.php?page=filez

Filezを起動

"View and Edit Files"

Filez

ゲットしたGVMJapan.romとgvm.confをN810へ転送。/usr/bin/gvm以下へ配置

GVM ROM TOOL

Dear God, I've started a blog and you all get to suffer ;-)

I've never been one to read blogs yet I have this strange compulsion to write one and here is the result.

In early November I'm going to Kyoto on a garden tour for two weeks. It's an opportunity to visit some really amazing gardens and homes with some very knowledgeable people. This is my first trip out of the US, except for the day trip to Tijuana years ago, and I'm very excited and a little nervous. I've got three months to prepare and a lot to do in that time.

One of my big dilemmas has been how to communicate back home during the trip. International phone calls are expensive, my cell phone won't work in Japan and email will work but isn't the same as talking to someone. In know there will be internet cafes close to where I'm staying but I'd like to have my own machine with me. Skype seems the obvious choice but I don't want to lug a laptop around. The Nokia N810 was my first choice. It's small, compact, has the features I need and runs linux as well but at $400 for a handheld it seemed kinda pricey. I was in Best Buy this weekend (one of my least favorite stores) and saw the eeePC. It's just too kawaii (cute). The eeePC is something that I could carry around and has all of the functionality of a laptop, even a usable keyboard, and also runs linux (XP too but what's the point). I've seen ones on Amazon for $399 which I don't think is too bad. This would allow me to use Skype, email and even blog while on the road. The one feature that the eeePC has that the N810 doesn't is and Ethernet port. Even though I'm planning on utilizing wifi on my trip there are times when I need to plug in. I've looked around a little at putting Ubuntu on the eeePC (my current distro of choice) but it looks like not all of the functionality is there yet most importantly the microphone. This would negate the ability to use Skype so it looks like Xandros would stay. As a perk my company gave me an Ogio Metro backpack. This should work prefect as a carry-on and for packing around stuff while in Japan. Even though it has room for a laptop the eeePC should fit one of the other pockets nicely. The only question I can't find an answer to is whether or not I need a converter while in Japan. It looks like the plugs are the same and the power is 60Hz but only 100V. I'm not sure if this will work properly.

Now I just have to figure out what to bring for gifts.

It would appear Toshiba (the originator of the classic Libretto small form factor laptop) is looking at the mini-book market.

From PC Authority:

The notebook giant is planning an ultra low-cost portable to join the ranks of the Eee PC and MSI Wind (though not necessarily a direct competitor, they say).

Officials won't reveal details, yet, but they are showing a prototype of a device they've created to spur development ideas. The tiny handheld (shown in the main pic below) reminded us more of a UMPC than a notebook, with the keyboard ditched in favour of a touchscreen keyboard.

Looks interesting, more like the Nokia N810 rather than a true UMPC.

For me Windows Vista is not really the best operating system for these internet devices, a bit too much power and as a result poor battery life and lots of heat!
