After a series of stressful projects I took a vacation as a gift for myself. I stayed at home, and p

After a series of stressful projects I took a vacation as a gift for myself. I stayed at home, and pampered myself with movies. Well, I find movies as an alternative to reading -- the activity which my grade school teacher, Mr. Avelino Pacamarra, defines as a "magic carpet that leads to new worlds, more adventures, more experiences and additional knowledge". So I watched movies some boring, some intriguing, some funny until I stumbled upon WALL-E, one of Pixar's latest creations.

The scenes unfolded with one cute robot (Wall-E, short for "Waste Allocation Load Lifter -Earth Class ) doing what he had been programmed to do -- gathering, compacting and stacking trash. From time to time, through artificial intelligence, he would select things that he can use for his self-repair or for his enjoyment.

The setting was a planet where trash and other discards are thrown similar to that of the movie Soldier, starred by Kurt Russel in 1998. So I thought. But as the story progressed, it was actually earth, a post apocalyptic earth -- abandonado, tapukan ki basura, warang tubig asin may regular na dust storm.

The earth was un-inhabited and only this lone robot survives. Well, igwa man palan ki ipis. But apart from the forgotten robot and the cockroach, only garbages exists... until one day, a spaceship came. May iniluwas ining sarong ovoid robot na ang pangaran si Eve. But WALL-E calls her "Eve-a". Eve is armed and dangerous but after a time, WALL-E was able to prove that he is not an enemy. They became friends (do robots make friends also?) and WALL-E gave Eve a plant. Ito siguro an misyon ni Eve kaya as soon as she received the plant and placed it in her compartment, she became immobile. After a long wait, WALL-E decided to bring Eve outside to be picked-up by the spaceship. Ang kasunod, naki-hitch si WALL-E sa spacehip na pinapadalagan kan B&L (Buy and Large).

Sa spaceship palan na ito naka-istar su mga tawo na warang ka-aram-aram manungod sa mundo. And they have been in that stellar ship for centuries asin siniserbisyuhan lang kan mga robots. I won't discuss the details as I might pre-empt future viewers. Hilingon na sana nindo ta baka malugi an Disney Pixar.

The whole movie is an animation and is for general patronage. Sabi kan padihon ko, sa trailer pa lang urugmahon na su mga aki niya. But like Tom and Jerry (or even more thatn T&J), the movie has subliminal messages being conveyed -- at least to the adult viewers. And these are the dangers of capitalism -- far than what Adrian Remodo discussed in Mga Palatakot nin Kapitalismo.

The movie shows how one company rose to power, encouraged consumerism and ended up ruining the environment. The monopoly was stronger than what Karl Marx ever thought of. I am not sure if this followed Lenin's "Imperialism: The Highest Stage of Capitalism" for the only thing certain is that the human beings went to a space cruise and lived there for centuries. Generations come and go until nobody was not familiar anymore of the planet called earth, or at least knowledgeable of what the earth is all about.

And the ruin was not just a ruin like what happened to Cagsawa in 1814. The earth was actually defaced and became more than a Smokey Mountain. No water exists -- only garbage and periodic duststoms. Kaya ngani hona ko sarong colonial planet na arog kan sa Soldier. And this is all because of the lack of care for the environment coupled with consumerism.

Pixar was very creative in doing the movie. Hopefully, the viewers and would-be viewers will not just look at the animation and filmography but also at the message of the the movie as well. Capitalism and consumerism has a price. And this becomes worst when coupled with greed. And if uncurtailed, the price may include the earth...

Anyway, went to watch 21 at Cathay today. Wasn't that bad, but definitely wasn't as exciting as all the tactics and laughter in Ocean's 11. But the catch is, this was adapted from a real life story. And a life experience that may get you a scholarship, hehe.

Guess what, I saw Mr Samuel Lim somewhere near my house just now .______. Had a small chat with him before he left, but I had no idea why he was there. Starting to reminisce the days when we used to hear his roars from a few classrooms away, or even right beside him ><

The Broken Hearts Club: A Romantic Comedy is a 2000 film that follows the lives of a group of gay friends in West Hollywood. It was written and directed by Greg Berlanti

Among the group is Dennis (Timothy Olyphant), a photographer who often holds the group together; Cole (Dean Cain) a handsome, charismatic actor who - often unwittingly - ends up with other people's boyfriends; Benji (Zach Braff), the youngest member of the group, with a penchant for gym-bodied men, who finds himself going through some bad times; Howie (Matt McGrath), a psychology student who is known for overthinking every situation; Patrick (Ben Weber), the cynic of the group; and Taylor (Billy Porter), who has long boasted about his long-term relationship, which has just come crashing to an end.

Guiding them all is restaurant owner Jack (John Mahoney) who provides them with advice. But when tragedy strikes, and the group's new member, teenage Kevin (Andrew Keegan) attempts to fit in, their friendships are put to the test.

The film also stars Nia Long, Mary McCormack and Justin Theroux, and features a cameo by Kerr Smith, who knew the director through their work on Dawson's Creek and enjoyed the script so much he asked to be a part of it.

Cast:

Ben Weber as Patrick
Timothy Olyphant as Dennis
Matt McGrath as Howie
Zach Braff as Benji
Dean Cain as Cole
Chris Payne Gilbert as Larry
John Brandon as Mickey
Diane McBain as Josephine
Robert Peters as Cop
Billy Porter as Taylor
John Mahoney as Jack
Nia Long as Leslie
Mary McCormack as Anne
Justin Theroux as Marshall

---

This movie portrayed the life of a group of gay guys, the variety of the characters really vast. I really like the story, especially when it came to the choice friends or lovers :). It was a really good movie, and is highly recommended to watch.

Believe it or not, this was the only glbt movie I've watched during my college time.

Last semester I took a photography course that was about sports, olympia, body culture etc. , and I had to give a presentation on the olympic films. As you might know, each olympiad has one official film, though the most famous ones are those of Leni Riefenstahl 1936 and Kon Ichikawa 1964.

Kon Ichikawa's "Tokyo Olympiad" shows the 1964 olympic games in a sometimes very poetic way, with some really beautiful camera. Someone put the whole film on youtube (divided into 20 parts or so, see it here), and for those of you who are interested in movies it's worth watching them.

Here are 2 examples, but check out the other ones too, there are sooo many good scenes.

The release of Kamal Haasan’s magnum opus Dasavatharam was probably the most awaited event after R

The release of Kamal Haasan’s magnum opus Dasavatharam was probably the most awaited event after Rajinikanth's Sivaji – The Boss. The release is also important as Kamal Haasan has no release since August 2006. Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu, Haasan’s last released in August 2006 was a huge hit.

Dasavatharam is India’s most ambitious film in terms of budget and scrip. The film was released on June 13 2008. Ravichandran decided on the project in 1996. It took a lot of time to get the film together. Almost after twelve years it was released world-wide on June 13, 2008 in the Tamil language, with a simultaneous dubbed version released in Telugu. The film is set to be dubbed into Hindi and released later in the year.

Role

In the movie Haasan appears in ten different roles, breaking the record for an actor's portrayal of the most different characters. The movie also has Asin in a dual role and Mallika Sherawat, who plays lead role. Kamal Haasan has played ten different roles in Dashavatharam - US President George Bush, Balaraman, a brahmin, a tall Afghan, a Lankan Tamil, an old lady, a doctor, a police officer, a Japanese, and a Daler Mehndi look-alike.

Music

Himesh Reshammiya has composed the film's soundtrack, and Devi Sri Prasad has given the background score. The soundtrack to Dasavathaaram was released on April 25, 2008, which became the largest audio launch for a film in the world. Prominent film personalities across the world including Jackie Chan, Amitabh Bachchan, Mammooty, Vijay and Madhavan attended the function

Distribution

In the recent past, most big-budget films be it Hindi, or any other regional film, producers have adopted a revenue model where the investments are typically recovered before the release of the film. The producer of the movie, Ravichandran, took the different route and decided to distribute the film himself. He has ensured that the film is released in as many screens as possible. The film overall will have 1,300 prints which will include the Hindi version as well. Tamil Nadu alone had 275 prints with Kerala and Karnataka accounting for 85 and 80 prints respectively. The Telugu version of Dasavatharam had as many as 260 prints. Around 1,100 prints will be released domestically while the rest will go abroad in countries like UK, US, Europe and Singapore.

Revenue
In terms of money that came Ravichandran's way before the release of the film, it was Rs 2 crore from Sony-BMG for selling the music rights and another Rs 4.5 crore for Kalaignar TV for the satellite rights. That adds up to just Rs 6.5 crore. The Ravichandran has distributed movie himself and is confident that the movie will do business worth Rs. 300 crores.
Reviews

Dasavatharam has been declared as the Blockbuster of the year due to its huge and mega opening worldwide in Indian film history. The film is anticipated to rake in close to Rs. 100 crore as its theatrical revenue at the end of this week, as Chennai theatre owners state that the bookings for the next 10 days are house-full. If compared to Rajnikant’s Sivaji the film grossed over 25 crore in its first one week. Given the current figures, Kamal Hassan is currently one up.

It's 80 years since televisions first went on sale in the shops. On July 3, 1928 you could have popped into your local electronics emporium and picked up a TV made by the Daven Corporation for the princely sum of $75.

The telly has come a long way since then, with high-definition LCD and plasma screens now taking the place of more traditional, boxy sets.

The 1920s

The first commercially available TV sets went on sale in the United States in 1928. Pictures were viewed on tiny screens, just a couple of inches in size.

The set pictured above was constructed from a plan published in the December 1928 and January 1929 issues of Popular Mechanics.

Daven Corporation, which made the first TVs to be sold in shops, also made all the components used to build this early set.

The 1930s

Early television sets were mechanical, but by the 1930s TVs had become entirely electronic.

During this decade, John Logie Baird made the first ever outside broadcast from the 1931 Epsom Derby.

The BBC also began broadcasting - televising the FA Cup Final for the first time in 1938. However, its operations ceased abruptly on the outbreak of war in 1939, with the British government fearful that broadcasts could be used by the enemy as homing signals.

The pictured television set, the Ecko TA-201, was made in 1939. It could receive just one channel and was for pictures only (sound could be heard by connecting it to a radio). It cost 22 guineas - or around £1000 in today's prices.

The 1940s

By the 1940s, television had really started to take off in America - aided by the popularity of stars such as Milton Berle and Ed Sullivan.

In Britain, the BBC resumed broadcasting in 1946 following the end of World War II. At the same time it also introduced the licence fee - £2 at the time.

The pictured set, the Bush TV-12, went on sale in 1948 and was pre-tuned to receive one channel. Its successor, which followed two years later, could be tuned to any of five channels

The 1950s

The TV boom truly hit Britain in the 1950s. The coronation of Queen Elizabeth II attracted huge viewing figures, and was the first time a TV audience had exceeded a radio audience.

By the end of the decade, more than 10 million TV licences had been issued in the UK, and popular programmes such as Grandstand, Blue Peter and Panorama had begun.

In the States, colour TV was introduced and innovations such as videotaping and remote controls were demonstrated.

The image is of a popular American TV set made by a company called Muntz. These were cheap and the 17 inch screen was big by the standards of the time.

The 1960s

Television technology developed rapidly during the 60s. By the end of the decade, colour broadcasting had begun in the UK, while portable TVs went on sale for those looking for a second set.

In America, TVs could now be found in 90% of homes. When Neil Armstrong took his first steps on the Moon, a global audience of 600 million people was watching.

The picture shows a stylish set manufactured by the West German KUBA Corporation. Called the Komet, the set stood 5' 7" tall, with the upper section rotating so the viewer could swing the 23" black and white television and speaker system in the desired direction.

The system cost around $1250 at the time - around £6000 in today's money.

The 1970s

By the start of the 1970s, 16 million TV licences had been issued in the UK.

TV sets were improved with the introduction of electronic channel tuning, and the videotape wars began with the introduction of Sony's Betamax system (1975) and JVC's VHS technology (1978).

The picture shows a 19-inch colour Portland TV set from 1979

The 1980s

By the 1980s, TV accessories such as video recorders and remote controls had become commonplace.

Screen sizes were also becoming bigger, although the proportion remained 4:3 rather than the now-familiar widescreen 16:9.

In the UK, Channel 4 began broadcasting, as did Sky television towards the end of the decade.

The image shows an 27-inch American set produced by Curtis Mathes

The 1990s

By the start of the decade, 900 million TV sets were in homes around the world.

Major advances in telly technology included the introduction of Nicam stereo sound and the broadcast of programmes in widescreen.

Towards the end of the 90s, early adopters began buying the new, flat plasma screens that were appearing at the top end of the market. Also, the new DVD video format was launched in the UK.

The 2000s

And so to today. Nowadays, bigger is better, with screen sizes of 37", 42" and even larger becoming increasingly common. The screen pictured above is a whopping 60" in size.

High-definition is the most recent technological advance, with digital broadcasts and Blu-ray players making it possible to watch programmes in pin-sharp detail.

Like other Linda Ellerbee productions, this is thorough and honest. It views soldiers who returned unharmed and ones who were seriously wounded. It also takes an unflinching look at post-traumatic stress and the parents who retreat into solemn silence. sunday'S MIGHT-SEES "Happy Feet" (2006, 4 p.m.) and "The Simpsons Movie" (2007, 6 p.m.), HBO.

The weekend wraps up with an animated double feature. First are dancing penguins, then talking Simpsons. Like the TV "Simpsons," the movie is erratic, with hilarious moments. Olympic Trials, 6 p.m., NBC.

We're to the finals now in swimming and track-and-field. "Factory," 7, 7:30, 9 and 9:30 p.m., Spike (Oceanic Digital Channel 559) Blue-collar comedy series are rare, so let's try this one. It focuses on four likable co-workers.

Tonight, one buys a car and another wants to propose; both plans go astray in fairly funny ways. "Million Dollar Password," 7 p.m., CBS.

Things turn youthful, with MTV's Damien Fahey and "High School Musical" co-star Monique Coleman. "Masterpiece Mystery: Inspector Lewis: Expiation," 8 p.m., PBS. After two excellent tales, "Lewis" goes overboard with its final story of the season.

A well-liked Oxford housewife kills herself. That leads to a dizzying excess of secrets and deceptions. "Baseball's Golden Age" debut, 9 p.m., Fox Sports Network.

This show spends way too much of its half-hour hyping itself, telling how it's using color film from way back. That's true and once we get to the good stuff — the actual film, the memories of players and fans — it's engaging.

Official Movie Poster
Fan-made movies/installments/episodes of any show are the ultimate expression

[wp_caption id="" align="alignleft" width="143" caption="Official Movie Poster"][/wp_caption]

Fan-made movies/installments/episodes of any show are the ultimate expression of both love and hardcore geekery. And no franchise in the history of science fiction has inspired more such productions than Star Trek; not just any version of Star Trek, either, but the mothership-- James Kirk's original vehicle. There's something about that pioneering show that continues to inspire enormous dedication and passion from thousands of fans, nearly five decades later.

Prime among such fan efforts is the New Voyages series, which in many ways was a philosophical precursor to the upcoming new "official" Star Trek movie, in that both visions have re-imagined the original iconic characters with new actors, something unthinkable a few years ago. But New Voyages, despite its admirable efforts, good stories and impressive special effects, was always an amateurish fan production. Simply put, the acting sucks and the dialogue and direction are highschoolish. I still heartily recommend all the New Voyages episodes to anyone who adores the orginal Shatner/Nimoy series, but beware that this is just well funded fan fiction.

Enter something called Star Trek: Of Gods and Men. It's a genuine fan-made full-length Star Trek motion picture, supported by the New Voyages cast and crew, but driven by hardened industry professionals, including actors from all four official Trek series: Star Trek, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Enterprise. It's even directed by Tim Russ, who played the Vulcan Tuvok in Star Trek: Voyager.

My understanding of the legalities of such production is limited. But I believe that Paramount lets fans get away with making these video love letters so long as no one tries to disrespect the core material or, more importantly, make any money off of the effort. Therefore, both the New Voyages episodes and this epic Of Gods and Men movie are completely free of charge. To view the latter, just visit the production's official website, download a bittorrent, or watch the streaming content on Youtube. I recommend the latter. You can begin here:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=wEl0vq0CCLU

Now, I am very pleased to report that the movie is good. In fact, I found it more enjoyable that the last couple of official Paramount Star Trek movies (Nemesis and Insurrection)... That is, if you keep reminding yourself that this is a free production put out by mostly amateurs in their free time. Be prepared to forgive some sloppy writing, cheap special effects, sometimes problematic acting and odd pacing and you will be presently surprised by the quality of your overall viewing experience.

The story is set 12 years after Captain Kirk has presumably been killed on the Enterprise B (see Star Trek: Generations), even though we all know he was actually sucked into the Nexus, and would not be killed until Malcolm Mcdowell gets his hands on him 80 years into the future. Suddenly there arrives a mysterious man from the past, a man with strange godlike powers, who is looking menacingly for Kirk. It's not too much of a spoiler to reveal that this man is the now sexagenarian Charlie Evans from the original series episode Charlie X, in a role played by William Wellman, Jr., who looks eerily like a grown-up Robert Walker, Jr, the original actor who filled Charlie's shoes.

Charlie lures Uhura, Chekhov and Captain John Harriman (Allan Ruck from Star Trek: Generations) to the planet where still stands the Guardian on the Edge of Forever, that weird time-travelling structure that first wowed us in the best ever Star Trek episode, City on the Edge of Forever. There, Charlie goes back 70 years into the past and murders James Kirk's pregnant mother, thus preventing the birth of our hero.

Fans of science fiction know what happens next. One pivotal individual, if removed from the soup of factors that establishes causality, can be the difference between the Utopia of the Federation and the nightmare tyranny of the so-called "Galactic Order", an evil empire led by a mysterious, godlike being whose identity will please and thrill hardcore fans of the original series.

[wp_caption id="" align="alignleft" width="228" caption="Garret Wang as a tough guy"][/wp_caption]

The movie is driven by a handful of main characters: All Ruck (Harriman), Nichelle Nichols (Uhura), Walter Koenig (Chekhov), Gary Graham (from Enterprise) and to a lesser extent Tim Russ. Also contributing important scenes are Garret Wang (Harry Kim from Star Trek: Voyager), the babe-tastic Chase Masterson (Leeta from Deep Space Nine) and J.G. Hertzler (also from DS9). For the dedicated fanboy, there is literally an armada of cameos from other Trek actors, and part of the fun of this movie is trying to identify the various random aged faces.

Nichols and Koenig are famous not only for their iconic roles, but also for never having been given starring vehicles. Nichols's timing is a bit off in some of the dialogue, but she does an admirable job nonetheless, and it's great to see a strong, older, black woman be given something meaty to do on screen, as well as a complete back story. But the real standouts are Koenig and Ruck. These two could, in my opinion, carry their own big budget, cerebral action movie. As Of Gods and Men shows us, you don't need to be young and spry to be an action star. Both Nichols and Koenig are in their 70s, while Ruck is just under 60. Their dynamic is believable and sometimes even touching.

It's difficult to put a finger on exactly why I found this admittedly cheap and sloppy production so engaging. Maybe because it was cheap and sloppy? You can only do so much with volunteer labour and private funding, with no expectation of profit or even of recouping your investment. I think that a big part of the movie's appeal is that it's not trying to steal our cash; it doesn't care about attracting viewers or sponsors. There will be no one trying to hock models of the spaceships designed for the film. There is no Burger King tie-in or on-screen product placement. There are no superfluous characters who have been added in the background only because they "look cool" and thus can be marketed as an action figure. There is no focus-group casting or test audience re-editing. This is a pure, though flawed, artistic effort with a singular intent: to express love for the core material and to share that love with the fans.

If you need to see $10 million on the screen, you will not enjoy this film. If you need your acting and dialogue to have been workshopped and test marketed, you will not enjoy this film. If you've only seen a couple of the original Star Trek episodes, you will not enjoy this film. But if you are over 25 years old (preferably over 40!) and have spent a goodly chunk of your life watching and re-watching the various incarnations of Roddenberry's greatest brainchild, then I strongly suspect that Star Trek: Of Gods and Men will be an enjoyable experience for you, and may even bring you some closure for the lesser characters on whom the major motion pictures could not afford to waste valuable screen time.

I, for one, hope there's a sequel.

I finally saw Wall-E on Friday. Everything that can be said about this movie has already been said, so I'll spare you the boredom of my review. But I liked it. And I met a twenty-foot version of the garbage-cleaning robot at Downtown Disney. I thought it would have been really funny if I held it's hand, but I fought the impulse.

I finally finished my online Biological Anthropology course today after my final. Fortunately, I did really well, so now I can focus on more important things. Say what you want about online classes, but don't believe the misconceptions. Are they easier than a normal class? Not really. Do they take up less time? Most definitely not.

Along with the fam, I dropped my grandmother off last night at LAX -- one of my favorite places ever. It would have been better if I was actually leaving to go somewhere.

Omgsh... I'm so sorry dears. There's so much adorable material to write about from Prince Caspian. I can't help it, loves. This is the third post inspired from the hunks of Narnia. Now what to say about this gourgeous guy. Well... MY! HE IS TRÉS FINE FOR ONE! What else can be said?

Ben Barnes was born August 20, 1981 in London, England. He is one of the stars of Prince Caspian and will reprise his role in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. He will star in a remake of the classic film The Picture of Dorian Gray (the old one is really good. I recommend watching before seeing the new one). The actor has a promising career ahead of him, and yes for the record he's really cute. And from what I've seen in interviews charming, well spoke, and yes hot.
