1. Talk to G. Place the 3 tracking devices, the yellow duck, and the Blue Prints (on the wall) into your inventory.

2. Go to the Ski Lodge. Pick up all the Find Four pieces. They are on the window seal, the stool under the phone, and under the ladder.

3. Go up the ladder. Pick up the Find Four pieces by the bricks, on the typewriter, on the table beside the phonograph, on the box, and on the box in the corner.

4. Pick up the string on the rug.

5. Go downstairs and talk to the penguins playing Find Four. Give them the pieces.

6. Go to the Forest and pick up the sticks.

7. Put the sticks, the blue print, and the string together to make a kite. Put the kite on a transmitter.

8. Go to the Mountain. Put the kite and transmitter on a poll.

9. Go to the Plaza and talk to the penguins. After the puffle blows a bubble, click the gum stuck between the penguins. Take the bubble gum. Put it on the yellow duck. Then put it in your inventory.

10. Go to the Dock. Talk to the penguin. Click, hold, and pull the brown start handle on the boat. Ask to use the Air Pump.

11. Put the Air pump on the duck to inflate it. Put a transmitter on the duck.

12. Go to the Ice Berg, and put the duck on the water.

13. Go to the Mines. Talk to the penguin. Click the Offer to help option.

13. Click the gray beams on the Mine Shack. Click and drag the wooden boards, making the metal beam so the left side is lower than the right.

14. Click on the overturned cart. Click it again to go up close. Weld all the cracks.

15. Place a transmitter in the cart. Click the cart for it to go.

16. Answer your spy phone. Go to the HQ and talk to G. Take the Binocular 3000 from G (it’s on the table).

14. Go to the Lodge. Click on the Gone Fishing door.

Go right. Look through the binoculars.

16. Talk to G on the Spyphone.

17. Go to Herbert’s camp. Pick up the spy phone near the fire. Fuse it with the Binoculars.

18. Put the spyphone/binocular in the big, dark green tree that is right off the exit back to the Lodge.

19. Go to the HQ. Talk to G. Watch Herbert and Klutzy.

20. You can now get the medal and chocolates.

Last Saturday, my friend Michaelanne and I got to watch the Rocky Mountains hibernate. It was one of the more memorable hikes I've done in recent years, a late-season jaunt across familiar ground in an unfamiliar season. In Colorado, the difference between one weekend and the next is drastic and ultimately humbling. In a week where I watched the economy do more of a tailspin — and also watched more friends lose their jobs — it was deeply refreshing to walk in the woods, hear the most perfect silence, and get my spiritual bearings back. We tend to be small, temporal, self-obsessed, insulated and driven by things that are ultimately not important. Nature is persistent, beautiful, and tends to be more brutal than any stock market. This fact was not lost on me last Saturday — as we entered a clearing on the trail, we could see the Ten Mile Range disappearing in the snow.

That'll make you pay attention, especially when you are wearing shorts like I was.

This hike is top-notch. I've done it four times, and it never ceases to amaze me. Do you want in on the secret? Oh, alright. Seeing that my blog gets about 15 readers a day (and I presume many of you are out of state), I'll divulge. Just don't telegraph it to Colorado.com. You can't trust those tourism promoters!

It's the southern end of the Gore Range Trail. The first segment is fairly popular as it goes to Wheeler Lakes, a pair of alpine ponds in a clearing. But the trail forks to the left, and what's beyond that junction is what interests me. I can't name another trail in Colorado that has such variety: it weaves in and out of the woods, through meadows, past ponds, around marshes, across creeks, along rocky ridges, back into the trees, across scree, beneath a hidden lake, and ultimately, up through the tundra to a low saddle called Uneva Pass, where a window to the north unveils the serrated Gore Range.

Each of the four times I've trekked up this (twice I've reached the pass), something magical happens. The first time was with my best friend Matt after I'd graduated from high school. At the scree field just shy of Lost Lake we saw an ermine dash across the trail and scurry over the rocks. The stench it left behind — they are mustalids like skunks — was short-lived but I'll never forget the lesson: don't f&*# with an ermine.

This go around, Mikey and I had a pretty different wildlife encounter: two couples of blue grouse.

Now, obviously I love birds. Who doesn't? Certainly not these folks. But more often than not, the only birds you see on the trail in Colorado are juncos, jays, nutcrackers and the occasional woodpecker (a western tanager is another story). But grouse is a bit different. In spring these horny little bastards get all gussied up in hilarious breeding plumage and strut like they're on Project Runway. In fall, well, they're more concerned about survival. These fatties were pecking around the forest floor and running around with their tails up. Easy dinner if this were the Oregon Trail.

One couple was just shy of Officer's Gulch. The other couple was hanging out just beyond it. At the crossing of the creek, Mikey and I found ourselves hiking through chest-deep willows the color of rust.

Mikey is running in the Philadelphia Marathon in November, so we kept a pretty quick pace for most of the day (and she somehow ran 18 miles the next day). By 11am we were at Lost Lake (pictured at the top, where she's covering her ears) eating lunch and debating whether we should push for the pass. One stiff wind — which rippled the placid lake and carried the scent of snow — sent us back to the trailhead.

We made great time, ultimately reaching these ponds by 1pm, just as the wind mellowed out. In summer, the ponds are surrounded by marsh marigolds and elephantheads.

But on this day, it was pale grass and brittle stalks baring seeds. You can see what I believe are elephantheads, the dark stems below left of the grass.

One final thing about this trail, why I love it and why I was a bit relieved last weekend as we trekked it. As I've mentioned before — and as any of you living in Colorado know — our northern mountains have been ravaged by the mountain pine beetle, especially Summit County and the Gore Range. In the past few months, I've gotten accustom to the sight of red and dead lodgepole pines in the James Peak Wilderness, Grand Lake, Rocky Mountain National Park and Steamboat Springs.

Last weekend, it dawned on me as we were heading down in a light snow that the forests leading up to Uneva Pass seem unaffected by the beetle. My fingers are crossed on this one, but I wonder if it has to do with how spaced out the trees are. I've always enjoyed how this trail weaves in and out of meadows and takes in views of the Ten Mile Range and the Mount of the Holy Cross. And maybe those meadows are a buffer. Or maybe the beetle just hasn't found them yet. We'll have to see. In the event I go back in the next few summers and find one of my favorite places in Colorado red and dead, I'll just have to remind myself that nature is brutal and there is a certain humility I can gain from that.

We got back to the car at 3pm, stretched our chilled muscles and hopped in the car. It then began to pour an icy rain...nature, at least on this day, was forgiving.

It was at this point, as he shimmied along the edge, Ron decided mountain climbing wasn't for him.

Daily: Anchor, Mountain

Doesn't the Anchor look like climbing equipment next to the Mountain? I'm scared of heights and mountain climbing isn't something I'd do willingly. However, it seems like this is my metaphorical task for today. Take it one step at a time, secure grip and start scaling that mountain. Don't lose hope and don't look down. I think I'll take my own advice, as I've got a long day ahead and thinking about all the stuff I have to do gives me vertigo. I hope the Mountain holds no more nasty surprises, like yesterday's one.

If your planning a ski vacation package, keep in mind that you want something that your whole family can enjoy, no matter what skill level they are at. Many ski resorts require you to have different passes for beginning, intermediate, and advanced slopes. Be sure that your family will have access to the slopes they want to be on. And ask about classes if you're not already skilled. It can be great to learn from a professional, and you'll get the satisfaction of improving your skill.

And don't forget there's lots to do besides just skiing. There's tubing, where you ride giant inner tubes down the ski hill. There is usually also an ice skating rink, which should offer figure skating, and hockey. And don't forget about sledding for the little members of your family. There's lots to do with the snow other than just to slide down it.

If it's getting too cold outside in the snow and ice, there's bound to be plenty of things to do inside. Most ski resorts will have game rooms with ping pong, pool, or darts. These games may seem a little old fashioned, but on a family vacation, sometimes it's nice to get away from the video games. Of course, there might also be an arcade.

Don't forget that many ski vacation packages will also include swimming pool, hot tub, and sauna access. These can be great choices for evening, after you've combed the slopes all day. Few things are nicer than a good soak in a hot tub after working your body out in the cold all day.

Along with many fun activities, most ski resorts offer a variety of foods, sometimes having multiple restaurants right on site. You may be able to have steak one night, and seafood the next. With most ski vacation packages, you should be able to find something to please everyone.

Don't for a moment think that the only thing to do at a ski resort is just ski. As you can see, there are a plethora of other opportunities for fun, and family together time. So don't just comb the slopes for a day. Clear a week in your calendar, and make it a real vacation. Rest assured, it will be one that your family will remember for many years to come. And likely, it will be one they'll want to repeat next year.

Here I am, nestled away in the delightful village of Sutton Poyntz in a deep cleft in the chalk hills in the biblically named valley of the River Jordan.  Behind me, to the north (for an old sea dog always looks towards the water!) is my mountain.  In fact, my recent purchase of an Ordnance Survey map has revealed that it achieves only one quarter of the height needed to qualify as such.  Believe me, when you climb it, as I do most mornings, it seems plenty high enough.  I used to think the miles that I walked with Capone and Carla around Chichester Harbour meant I was fit but in Dorset there are hills!

To the south is the most stupendous view across Weymouth Bay to Portland.  The Jurassic Coast tumbles away towards Lulworth.  The monstrous cliffs of Portland join the town's Esplanade along the great shingle isthmus that is Chesil Beach and the sky, usually blue, reminds me every minute that I must be close to paradise.

It is not always a peaceful scene and I look forward eagerly to some vicious winter storms.  Last weekend, Portland was hosting its speed trials and, sure enough, a 40 knot wind was blowing across Chesil Beach.  The wind and kite surfers sailing parallel to the road were clearly outstripping the cars and the breeze was very much more than brisk.

I parked up, released the beasts and we set off to walk west over the shingle spine.  The wind was as fierce as any I have known.  Carla whimpered.  Capone struck on.  I struggled.  Chesil shingle is large pebbles, difficult to walk through and with the blast in our faces almost impossible.  As my head peeped over the crest I remembered what real wind means.  Reaching the top I could lean my whole weight into it and riding the gusts, stand like Kate Winslet at the sharp end of Titanic, supported on air, resplendent in space.

We stumbled down the far side, an awe inspiring sight before us.  Eight foot monsters pounding down.  Spray flying thirty feet high.  The majesty of the ocean before us.  The huge, roaring, raging, thundering of the shingle dragged back in the undertow.  A lump in my throat, my tears mixing with the stinging spray.  The overwhelming, compulsive, massive power of it.  I am part of an island race.  The salt must run in my veins because this is being alive.  Nothing can be more complete, more absolute, more real.  Time stands still while the incomparable terror and beauty of nature displays itself.

The walk back is much easier with a helping hand up the hill and in the lee of the shingle mountain the wind now feels gentle and modest.  This is why I came to the ocean.  This is what feeds my soul.

I remember more than 20 years ago standing on the north coast of the island of Iona with my four month old son in my arms and being similarly overcome.  If this is what Weymouth offers me in the first month then i am here for life.

Today, it was blissfully calm.  The sea at Bowleaze Cove was as flat as the millpond at Emsworth.  Above a million feathers of high cirrus cloud, slightly below, scudding cotton wool puffs, dark at the edges, a Dali-esque caricature of a sky but real not surreal.  This is my new home and I love it!

I'm working on merging a few clips and doing some editing to put it all together, but soon I will have a nice little video showing off a few things on the hike.

Highlights:

• Spider webs with sizable owners pretty much everywhere.
• Castle ruins from the Edo Era, the main attraction besides the view.
• None of those very poisonous snakes, which go away in September.
• A huge pack of crows was disturbed by my trek up to the peak, scary!
• You could really hear activity even besides traffic going on below in the town

Daily: Mountain, Ring

A big conundrum? The Mountain is associated with obstacles and difficulties, I see myself running around the ring with no way out and no solution in sight today. I hope I'm wrong, as I've got a lot of things to solve today! Alternatively it could stand for a big commitment I suppose. Not much more to add at this stage, I'm curious to see how this works out today.

In retrospect: Well, I was way off with my interpretation. The day went mostly ok, but I got a rather unpleasant and unexpected bit of news. Something that I was hoping to finish soon, a commitment represented by the Ring will have to be delayed considerably due to external forces. Making these forces budge could be like attacking a mountain with a toothpick. But I'm going to try anyway ;)

Theodore Roosevelt advocated what he called “ the strenuous life”.  He understood that our time on earth is limited and that we should make the most of it.  Psalm 90:12 says, “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”  Theodore Roosevelt believed that verse and stated, “Leaders are those who make the most of every moment, of every opportunity, and of every available resource.” 

Theodore certainly practiced what he preached.  He, both physically and mentally, was constantly busy.   When Theodore Roosevelt was a boy, he was sickly and weak.  However, through consistent hard work, he grew into a strong and energetic man.  Roosevelt climbed mountains, hunted, fished, and fought in the Spanish-American War.  He even had a boxing ring set up in the White House and invited prizefighters to box a few rounds with him!  Physically, Theodore Roosevelt lead a strenuous life.

Mentally, Roosevelt was no different.  He had a voracious appetite for learning.  Most weeks Theodore Roosevelt read at least five books, more if he was not too busy.  This reading payed off.  His son Archie testified, “In one afternoon, I have heard him speak to the foremost Bible student of the world, a prominent ornithologist, an Asian diplomat, and a French general, all of whom agreed that Father knew more about the subjects in which they had specialized than they did.”  His was indeed a strenuous life.

Beyond a doubt, Theodore Roosevelt was a manly man.  He, perhaps better than any other man, captures the essence of Christian manliness.  Starting life weaker than most, he ended life having accomplished much more than most.  His life is an enduring example for use to follow.  Rise up O men of God and lead a strenuous life!

Being from the Midwest, snowmobiling out west in the Rocky Mountains was always a dream.  About five years ago, my husband and I splurged on a trip to Wyoming to snowmobile in the mountains.  Well, now there is no turning back.  We go every year. 

Our favorite place is Togwotee Lodge.  It is up in the mountains right in the heart of the trail system.  Togwotee is a full service resort with cabins and lodge rooms, gas station, bar, restaurant, snowmobile rentals, repair shop, and more.  Whatever you need, they have it.  Togwotee Lodge offers room or cabin nightly rates or a package rate which includes lodging, food, drinks, transportation, guide service, special discounts, and more.

Many people choose to bring their own snowmobiles.  We are from Michigan, so it is way too long of a drive for us to do that.  We fly into Jackson Hole and usually spend a night or two in town to go shopping and visit the Elk Refuge.  Now that is a sight to see!  There are hundreds of elk at the refuge and you can take a sleigh ride and get to see some up close.

Yellowstone National Park is a great adventure.  The first time that we went we weren't required to have a guide.  We were able to do the whole loop and see the canyons, hot springs, and Old Faithful and lots of wildlife in the park.  There were plenty of buffalo, elk, coyotes, and we even saw an eagle.  It was great.  Now you are required to have a guide and are generally with a group.  We went with a group and guide a few years ago and it was very informative and fun.  Well worth seeing!

The views of the Teton Mountains are spectacular.  You can see them from all directions while riding.  The trail system at Togwotee is hundreds of miles.  There is also plenty of powder!  Extreme riding has become my husband's new passion!  Take a look at some pictures on my website.

West Yellowstone is another fun location for snowmobiling.  The entrance to Yellowstone National Park is right there in town.  There are plenty of hotels and snowmobile rental shops right in town.   The trail system is a little smaller and it is harder to get there by airplane.  West Yellowstone airport is closed during the winter.  The closest airport is Bozeman, Montana which is about 90 miles away.

Many of you reading this blog used to follow these ratings when I wrote for Vandymania.  Some of you have e-mailed me asking for my comments on what is going on in Vandyville.  I must admit that in the almost three years since I stopped regularly covering Vanderbilt athletics, my inside connections have for the most part dried up.  So, I can only give a layman's opinion on the current trend up in Nashville.

Many of you know my past as a former coach of football, basketball, and baseball at the youth, high school, and collegiate levels.  When it comes to football, I am a no-nonsense believer that the team with the better defense usually wins games, and the difference is best determined in the trenches.  Think of the defense as the starting pitching staff of a Major League baseball team, and think of the defensive front seven as the aces of the staff.  The secondary is the bullpen.

Vanderbilt has received some excellent pitching with just enough timely hitting (offense and special teams) to win 3-2 games.  The Commodore football team is much like the 1965 Los Angeles Dodgers and 1969 New York Mets five games into the football season.

You will notice that I do not have the Commodores in my current Top 25, but they are within a few points of moving into that group.  Remember, my ratings do not rank teams based on what they have done so far; they attempt to look ahead to what they will do in their next game.

If you look at the ratings and try to predict the future, you will see that they believe Vandy will win this week to go to 6-0, lose to Georgia, beat Duke, lose to Florida, lose to Kentucky, beat Tennessee (in overtime), and lose to Wake Forest to finish 8-4.  There is a caveat:  these ratings are only good for one week, and by Sunday, they won't be applicable for October 18.  Let's say Vanderbilt beats Mississippi State by 20 points, while Kentucky gets drilled by South Carolina.  By next week, Vanderbilt's rating could be several points higher than Kentucky's, and that game would be considered a win.  What if Mississippi State wins Saturday?  Vanderbilt could be picked to lose five of their final six games.  So, all I can really say for sure is the Commodores are a slim road favorite this week according to my ratings.  However, I believe Commodore fans will spend a few days of winter away from Nashville watching a football game for the first time since 1982.  If the team can finish 9-3, that may even be a New Year's Day game like the Outback Bowl against someone like Michigan State or Illinois.  If the team finishes 7-5, then expect to be watching them play in Memphis at the Liberty Bowl against someone like Tulsa or Marshall.

Due to time constraints, I will no longer be able to preview the Wisconsin or Vanderbilt games like I have in previous weeks.  However, beginning next week, I will begin to slot teams into bowls using the PiRate Ratings to look forward.
