I sit here quite content, with a belly full of home made onion soup with cheesy crouton, after watching download highlights of what was probably the best tennis match Ive seen (last nights Wimbledon final). Really pleased that Nadal one and really deserved it. However, I digress. Im also content because of our renewed interest and enthusiasm in houses.

Saturday, after spending a criminally long time in bed, we drove over to Yarraville to meet up with one of my mates from work who lives over there. She promised to show us around and give us a tour of the area, and she delivered on every front. Yarraville seemed like just what we're after, being charming, small and having none of the increasingly annoying hordes of visitors that come to St Kilda every weekend and inhibit your daily goings on. Lots of nice little coffee shops, a big pub on the corner, butchers and bakers, 2 supermarkets and an old art deco cinema. The surrounding areas were a mixed bag. Kingsville and Seddon are close enough to Yarraville to be a walk away, and are both nice too. Footscray seemed a bit run down, but no more so than the arse end of Wolverhampton or Birmingham. My mate took us to a couple of big parks in the area too, which were amazing. One park had a lovely little pond and stream running through the middle of it, and if it werent for the cockatoo's screeching, you could almost imagine it being a summers day out in the country in the UK. The other park was massive! It was an old quarry which has now been partially filled and is a lake, while the rest is kinda forest-ey full of mad giant water fowl, that are probably venomous or something! Anway, overall, were totally sold on moving over there, and are looking at houses to book house inspections for on the weekend, nearly all of which are old weatherboard style houses with ornate ironmongery on the frontage, and picket fences around the front garden. Like our own little fairytale house! Cant wait!

As for stuff going on this week, theres not much really. Were off to see a doublebill at an old arthouse style little cinema on Thursday (Ironman & Spiderwick Chronicles) and Id like to see Hancock and Speed Racer at some point. Rock Band is still thrilling me with the download content, and it seems like Im finally starting to get the hang of that damn tricky 5th button! GTA is still keeping me going with stunt jumps and pigeons aplenty to be found, and BF: Bad Company is great, but its really intense, so I wont allow myself to play it too close to bed time as Im wired afterwards!

Macbook Air bargains on Ebay seem to have dried up, and Im toying with waiting a bit and holding out for a Macbook Pro. There are rumours of a case redesign floating around today, so Im hoping its not too far away. I dont really need the power of a Macbook Pro, but it would be good to compare the MBA against. We'll see. Im spending more time having a lie in on the net rather than with a book, so a light mac would help. Speaking of net stuff, if youre an internet nerd like me, have a butchers at this and see how many your recognise. Good song too!

Anyway, thats it for now. Im gonna get off to watch the last Dr Who and Youve Been Framed. T'raaaaa a bit!

Police told two Queen Anne women to get their blinds fixed after the women reported seeing one of their neighbors looking at them through the window with binoculars.

The neighbor, whose wife told officers she should have called police on the girls for "putting on a show" by walking around naked or in sexy lingerie, was told by officers responding to the call to put the binoculars away.

Seattle police responded to the call on Queen Anne Avenue North on June 22 when one of the girls reported seeing the neighbor looking at her with binoculars.

She also told police she had seen the man looking into her window with the aid of a flashlight.

Responding officers at the women's apartment said they saw the neighbor shut the blinds of his window when they looked outside.

The man, and his wife, acknowledged they had seen the women through their windows.

The wife said it was hard not to notice because one of the women was always "putting on a show."

The women said the blinds were broken but that they would ask their landlord to make repairs.

Summer Time is Coming, and the pickings are easy - for burglars.
Most security and insurance experts

Summer Time is Coming, and the pickings are easy - for burglars.

Most security and insurance experts agree that burglaries tend to increase during July and August when it stays for daylight longer, when most people go on vacation.

Burglars know the signs that let them know a family isn't at home: a porch light left on all day, newspapers piling up in the driveway or a mailbox that is stuffed full, said Chris McGoey, a longtime security consultant, trainer and speaker.

Those are some of the more obvious signs. But there are things burglars look for that may not be so obvious.

Leaving the blinds closed so nobody can see in while you're away is a double-edged sword, said McGoey, who also runs a security-education Web site called Crime Doctors. While a potential burglar can't see your valuables, closed blinds and curtains are also a sign that tells him no one is home.

The good news is there are a number of things you can do to protect your house or apartment while you are away.

•Won't you be my neighbor? "The best method is to seek help from adjoining neighbors in watching your home and making it look occupied. Have them park a car in your driveway, raise the window shades occasionally, put out garbage cans on schedule, etc.," McGoey said in an e-mail interview.

•Lockdown: Ensure that all door and window locks are working properly. Rose Rougeau, a spokeswoman for AAA Texas, suggested investing in slide-lock protection for sliding glass doors, which are a frequent entry point for burglars.

"Garage windows and doors should also be secured," she said.

•Remote control: "Consider buying a light timer set for every evening," Rougeau said. "Setting up multiple timers in alternating rooms works best."

Timers for your radio are also a good idea, she said.

•Read it later: McGoey and Rougeau both suggested temporarily canceling newspaper subscriptions and postponing mail delivery to deter a burglar.

•Rearrangement: Rougeau also suggests moving electronic equipment away from the windows so it won't be easily visible, and arranging for lawn service if you will be away for more than a week.

Protecting your home from burglars while you're out of town doesn't mean you are free from them while vacationing. Thieves are known to target hotel rooms, McGoey said. Some tips:

•Aim high: He suggests choosing a newer hotel and requesting a room on an upper floor to reduce crime exposure.

"Ground-floor rooms are more vulnerable to crime problems because of access and ease of escape," he said in a Crime Doctor article. "In a high-rise building, rooms above the fifth-floor are usually safer from crime than those below because of lesser accessibility and ease of escape."

• You are not alone: Women traveling alone or with young children should use car-valet services and try to avoid hotel parking lots. They should also ask a bellman or desk clerk to be an escort to their room, McGoey said.

•Anybody there? Putting a "do not disturb" sign on the hotel-room doorknob, leaving a TV or radio on loud enough to hear through the door and leaving a small light on at all times will help deter a potential burglar, he added.

McGoey said he has heard hundreds of stories about how a home burglary wiped out years of records on home computers and ended up in the loss of irreplaceable items, and ultimately left the family feeling unsafe.

"Some families move after a burglary for fear the intruders will return," he said.

Yesterday I went to Cambridge to visit my former professor and he arranged a trip for me to see Lucy

Yesterday I went to Cambridge to visit my former professor and he arranged a trip for me to see Lucy Boston's house, which is located in Hemmingford Grey. I was very touched that he and his wife rented a car to drive me there. It was raining for most of the day so my photos didn't turn out so good but I really loved the tour of the house. Lucy's daughter-in-law, who was married to her only son Peter Boston (illustrator of her books), showed us around The Manor, which was built in 1130. Lucy moved to the house after her divorce and she was considered a German spy for a while during the war because she used to live in Austria and could speak German. She wore and Austrian dress and that furthered suspicions. In addition, she would forget to turn off the light in the attic and people thought she was signalling to the Germans. People were afraid to pass her house.

The gardens are very pretty and the inside architecture is amazing. One of the most noted items in the living room is a picture of Burleigh Castle (not sure of the name) which was made from hair!! Amazing. The house has undergone many changes since it was first built but some of the walls (over 900 years old) remain intact. The Music room on the second floor used to be the living room and Lucy had a gramophone that is still in use now. She used to play records for the soldiers in WWII and we got to listen to a 60 year old record (nice classical music). The sound was wonderful. The secret to getting good sound is using fiber (bamboo) needles instead of steel ones. Lucy tried to make as many seats as possible and even used her car seat and mattresses so that the soliders could have a nice place to sit.

Lucy published her first book when she was 60 and she also made amazing patchwork quilts. She continued to do this until her 90s even when her eyesight was failing her. What an amazingly talented woman. There was a special Chinese lantern hanging in the music room that got my attention and apparently it is used in one of the books. I have to read all her books now. The attic is most special because the toys and other objects in the room appear in the stories. Lucy's daughter-in-law told us that there was a group from a hen's party there that morning and the bride loved the room so much she cried, thinking of her childhood reading. What a civilized activity for a hen's party, haha. There is no photography allowed inside so I could only take photos of the garden. I loved the chickens and baby chicks running around.

For more information about the house, see http://www.greenknowe.co.uk/index.html

I had a dream last night. It really seemed real and clear. In my dream, my mother and father were talking about renovating our house. My father agreed and we were talking about where we should stay. We would have to take everything out of the house and find a place to temporarily hold them while the house was under construction. I remember them saying we had to break down the house before actually rebuilding it. I even was imagining how it shall be in my dream. Hahah.. typical. Hmmh.. then I woke up.

I told my mother about my dream when I awoke, maybe that's why I still remember parts of it. I really believed it, then when I realized it was a dream.. I felt so surprised. We don't have any savings and well, my father is cheap. Heheh.. So it really seems far fetched, unlikely to happen in reality. ;p

But as I was reflecting on the dream... I read a message between the lines. [Not actually between the lines] My Father promised it will happen, but first we have to break down the whole house, only then shall we rebuild. After that, it will be wonderful... much better than the old one. I remember picturing it high... I was on the ground and I was looking up to the top, it was beautiful with the blue skies and fluffy clouds balancing the scene. It will take its form soon, I must be patient. I wonder...

This popped out in my head or rather heart:

Hosea 6: 1-3 "Come, let us return to the LORD. He has torn us to pieces but He will heal us; He has injured us but He will bind up our wounds. After two days He will revive us; on the third day He will restore us, that we may live in His Presence. Let us acknowledge the LORD; let us press on to acknowledge Him. As surely as the sun rises, He will appear; He will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth."

God speaks in everything and in every way. We have to listen closely so we won't miss a thing. Maybe God is telling you something now? Ironic. He works in ways we cannot understand and His purpose, so great that we cannot comprehend. We can but we cannot fully. The unfathomable God wants to be sought out. It is His Will that you experience His Love in the most indescribable way. You have nothing to lose but yourself.
:] Why not listen?.. Why not follow?.. Why not live for Him? Why not live in Him? Why not? Can you compare what you're holding on to Him? Why keep holding on to something you can't hold on forever? Why not hold onto Him? Why not choose Him? Why not love Him? Why not be crazy for Him? He is for you... SO WHY NOT?

Tonight is our last night in Herman Manor.

We moved here in February 1998. I was 29. I had a wife of 4 years, one child (age 2), and no pets. We owned few things that weren't leftovers from college. We had 25" TV (from college), a couch (from college via my parents hand-me-downs), 2 pine bookcases we'd bought for $99, a bed, a crib, a table and chairs that were Sandy's aunt's college furniture before they were even Sandy's.

We still fit into our college clothes. Sandy drove a 1978 Chrysler LeBaron and I had my 1994 Saturn (my first real purchase after getting my first job.

It was pre-Y2k, pre-Internet bubble, pre-September 11th, pre-George W, pre-gray hair.

We didn't have anything, didn't know anything, didn't need anything.

It's 10 1/2 years later now. We have 2 kids (12 and 8!). My carreer has gone well. We have things. LOTS AND LOTS of things! We do still live with our childhood dressers (both Sandy's and mine) and a few other silly things we've never replaced (like our homemade headboard), but we've done well.

Packing the entirety of our lives into a 27 foot trailer was a daunting task. When you live in an 1800 square foot house you find ways to make storage space. For us there were lots of shelves and a huge (and fully loaded crawl space). It took days to empty out that crawl... long, dusty, allergy filled days. We opened old boxes and looked at our lives gone by: pictures, mementos, costumes, uniforms, letter jackets, toys, clothes, decorations; things that had made us happy, things that had made our lives full. So many went into the trash, or were put out one our many "free for the taking" piles on the driveway, some things we kept, but far fewer than we let go.

By the end of last week we were drowning in boxes. "Boxes boxes everywhere, and not a spot to think" was how I proclaimed it. Athena had to crawl under the dinner table to get to her chair; our living room was a canyon of boxes so that you could scarcely see someone sitting next to you; the dishwasher was being run once a day because we kept running out of plates.

On Saturday morning DeAnna and Chad showed up to help us (as they always do!) and brought along 3 of kids from their high school too! It was great to have some young muscles in the house schlepping boxes and furniture out to the trailer. For $150 in cash, plus some doughnuts and pizza we had a relatively uneventful load-in. But several times during the day one of the boys would remark to me "man, you have a LOT of stuff!"

I was embarrassed by this, and saddened too. I half thought that when I handed each boy a $50 bill at the end of the day it might have been the first time they'd seen one. I'm sure that's a foolish notion, but it was bizarre to see my life through the eyes of a 17-year old. I wanted to defend myself, to explain to them how humble our beginnings had been, to tell them how Sandy and I used to go the the airport and sit and make up stories about the strangers we saw because we had no money to go to the movies, to show them the home-made Christmas tree ornaments we still have, but it wouldn't have mattered. All they could see was boxes and boxes and boxes of stuff.

Chad was a magician. With the truck 2/3 full it was clear we were in trouble and I'd already learned that it was not possible to find a rental truck on short notice on a holiday weekend. Stuff was going to have to be left behind and I was starting to really feel the weight of the coming decisions. But some how we got it all in there with room to spare. It was simply amazing.

Today I packed the "untruckables" into pick-up beds and yard trailers - lawn mower, hoses, potted plants, garage stuff, yard stuff; things far to bulky, heavy, or dirty to box up and put next to our clothes and mattresses. Sandy spent her day cleaning and cleaning. She was determined that the new owners not walk into their new house and find it smelling odd or having other people's dirt in it. The house sparkles.

And now suddenly the place is empty. The rooms echo when we call out to each other. There are no pictures, no chairs, no cups, no toys. There are no clothes, no TVs, no iPods, no towels. There are only a few final cleaning items in the kitchen, a box of rags, 3 mattresses with pillows and bedding, and 4 laundry baskets - one for each of us - to hold our morning routine needs and tomorrow's clothes.

No one could go to bed tonight. The usual routines didn't make sense. Sandy is working in the morning, she's getting up just after 4 am, so I wanted her into bed early, but everyone was needy. Athena was crying over the dogs and tomorrow's ballet class and the sleepover she's going to. Orion was pouting and then suddenly had a massive nose bleed, getting blood all over his shirt and the living room carpet! (no drops here, we're talking a gusher! QUICK, CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN). No one would get into their PJs, no one would brush their teeth, no one would go to their rooms and go to bed. It took forever to get everyone to relax and lay down. Only...

I can't sleep.

I loved this house. I get attached to buildings and things. They are emotional connections to my life and it's hard to leave them behind. I know all the reasons the new house will be wonderful; how it will enrich our lives and how we'll make wonderful new memories there.

But this is the house where we brought Orion home from the hospital. It's the house where my kids learned to ride their bikes. It's the place where the tooth fairy comes. It's where Santa visits. It's where Easter eggs hide. The kids have really outgrown all that, but it wass tradition in this house, I don't know if they'll play along in the new one.

We remodeled every single room here, some more than once. My dad and I pulled up shag carpet and refinished the hardwood floors. Sandy and I put in a pond liner that resulted in one of our biggest fights. Dad spilled a half gallon of paint on the living room carpet. Chad and I built the shed together. Athena loved catching crawdads in the irrigation ditch. Sandy grew beautiful gardens. Orion and I built trains all over the basement floor.

With the fish pond out back, I became a decent aquatic gardner (though my talent was the water and fish, Sandy made it look like I understood plants too). I feed the fish for the last time today, they came to the surface like they always do when I stand near by, mouthing for food, splashing around. One of them is Lila; a gift from Athena's 2nd grade teacher. Each child took a goldfish home and I'm sure all were dead within a few days or weeks. Lila still swims in our pond 5 years later. I know her by sight and every spring I'm relieved to see her come to the surface when the pond thaws out.

This evening we made the final markings in the back corner of Athena's closet, noting each child's height, age, and the date. It was incredible to see their yearly growth marked out on that wall for 10 years. There were so small once.

Everyone has been asleep for hours now. I'm still unable to go. It's my last night in my home. In a few months I'll be feeling used to the new house and I won't miss it so much but tonight it's hard.

This isn't a building to me. This is my life. And I'm leaving a part of me behind when I go tomorrow.

We're on about day ten of stickiness. Even though it hasn't been super hot, the humidity just will not go away, and the forecast doesn't bode well for me not sweating all over myself. Oh well, life could be worse.

We went to see Wall-E today. Two big thumbs up from me, and the rest of the family really liked it too. I loved the storyline -- it was really thought-provoking in terms of conservation & consumerism, and delivered a sobering message without being preachy. It definitely reframed some of my thoughts around what I might "need". I'd been ruminating on that as it is, as Lane has started noticing advertising and marketing gimmicks and I'm trying to show her them for what they are. Does she want that tube of toothpaste because she thinks it will make her teeth really clean, or because it will taste good, or is it just because it has Diego on it? Yes, the Aqua Globes on the infomercial are cool, and yes we do have plants, but our watering can works just fine, we don't need hand-blown glass globes to automatically deliver the perfect amount of water for up to two weeks!

In trying to help Lane see through this mental clutter, I've started to realize how much of it I have, and how I sometimes fail to see around the obstacles that the media has planted in my mental path. I've spent a long time really digging Burberry plaid. Why? I do find the pattern visually appealing... but do I like it more because of the illusion of status it might convey? Probably. I drive a Honda Odyssey right now. We bought it with the intention that we would take care of it and it would be driven until it simply could not be driven any more. It boggles the mind how many times people have called that into question -- do I really want to drive a car into the ground? What if it lasts another ten years? Do I want to be driving a 15-year-old vehicle? Part of me does cringe at that... ugh. But why do I cringe? Is there anything fundamentally flawed about loyalty to a vehicle that continues to serve its purpose, that being to get me and my family and my stuff (some of which I probably don't need anyway) from Point A to Point B and back again? Why should any part of my brain worry about the impression someone might get because I don't have the latest model?

We are in the process of buying a house. This whole foray brings up a related set of values and perceptions. Frank and I were contemplating buying a 3 bedroom ranch, and my in-laws (people who are not generally the keep-up-with-the-Joneses type) were convinced it simply could not be big enough for our family. First of all, it was more than big enough for us. Maybe not for all our 'stuff' too -- but that could be rectified via a garage sale, Craigslist and Freecycle. Regardless, my brother and I grew up in a 3 bedroom ranch that wasn't any bigger than the house Frank and I were considering, and my childhood house was probably smaller. Before we bought the 3 bedroom ranch, my family and I were in a 3 bedroom cape cod, which was DEFINITELY smaller than the ranch we bought when I was 13... and while it may have lacked for space (especially in the closet department) we survived. The house we are now under contract on is definitely bigger, a 4 bedroom raised ranch with a living room and family room and roomy master suite with two closets, and a dining room and huge deck and big backyard. We decided to buy it not because it was "more house" but mainly because it was very close to my in-laws' house. That it is bigger and more updated is simply a bonus (until I start thinking about the bigger mortgage that comes with it.) Yet a part of me still feels a big oodgy when I mentally compare it to other people's houses. How does it compare, and how will others compare their house to mine?

This rat race, it is a hard habit to break. And it seems so fundamentally pervasive in our culture. It must tie somehow to some mental process, some functioning of the human psyche that served us well for survival when we all were hunting and gathering and trying to avoid saber-toothed tigers lest we become an entree. Perhaps it helped to ensure our survival, if we always strove to collect more berries than the people in the next cave. But it's time to draw the proverbial line in the sand. I've collected enough berries.

we have a hole in the wall of our shower. a big damn hole where the tiles have fallen away and exposed the rotting drywall. whoever redid the bathroom last neglected to waterproof anything, so now the whole thing is crumbling away. we've duct taped and plastic covered for a few years now, thinking that we would renovate soon. but after one contractor bailed, we've worn holes in our shoes with dragging our feet. the bandaid approach does not work anymore, as evidenced by the buckets we had to distribute throughout the house to catch the rainwater. our roof is a sieve. if i can get the bathroom looking even a little better, i think that it will make us all feel better about living here. a couple of days ago we got rid of one of the pieces of furniture that l, my mother, gave us. there are only a few more physical remnants of our relationship to her. it will be good to get rid of the rest and excise the daily reminders of her and p compliments of the stuff that they've given us over the years. this last piece we gave to a friend, the others we put out on the street. my mother would be aghast that we could part with these heirloom quality treasures. but then again, anything she touched, anything she deigned to bestow upon us was in her mind an heirloom. by the time the thing was in the house, the story would have grown and changed, the value inflated until we could only disappoint by our reaction to her generosity. how could a human response live up to the response that she felt she deserved. not once or twice. but every time you saw her, talked to her you were required by law to offer up your deepest appreciation for the gift and for the opportunity to be allowed within the sanctum of her generosity. dig. this ain't no lie. i'll be glad to get the rest of the shit out of the house.

We are definitley in the home stretch in more ways than one! We finally have some dates to put on the calendar. Probably won't blog again until we get settled unless some spectacular happens. :0)

Life in the Siever house over the couple weeks includes: Monday-Wednesday make sure EVERYTHING is packed and ready, Thursday we sell the house, Friday morning we buy the new house and then the fun begins. Friday and Saturday we plan on moving all boxes and scuttle. Sunday we take Molly to T Bar M for camp for the week with her best buddy Emily. Molly thinks it is very cool that when she leaves we'll live in one house and when she comes back we'll be in another (it's the little things in life!). Monday the movers come bright and early to move the remaining furniture and large heave items in the house, then we clean and hand over the keys. We have a few days to unpack and then Grandmama & Grandpapa arrive on Friday, we all go to pick up Molly on Saturday, and Steve and I fly out to Seattle VERY early on Sunday morning.

This is our first trip together WITHOUT kids since Megan was born. I have always wanted to go to Seattle and Steve has wanted to go back since he left Fort Lewis some 20 years ago. The icing on the cake (the 20th year anniversary cake, has it really been that long?!) are the tickets to the James Taylor concert at the vineyard outside of Seattle on Monday night. To say we are excited about the trip is a HUGE understatement and we are soooooo thankful that Mom and Bob (aka Grandmama & Grandpapa) are able to come out and stay with the kids. I'm sure they will have as much fun as we do.

It is Sunday night, and the weekend is just about over. We had a fun filled weekend at the beach with Mimi, Grammy and Pops. Little Monkey had lots of fun playing in the ocean, in the sand and in the pool. He wore himself out each day from playing so much. We had lots of fun just hanging out, eating and playing the Wii. Now that we are home, it is back to "the real world" and no more grazing through the abundance of food in the kitchen! (This is probably good since I start with the personal trainer tomorrow!) I have about half of our stuff already unpacked but really should try and finish the rest before bed. I doubt that will happen though! I'm tired.

I am hoping to get motivated this week to work on organizing the office/guest/craft/storage room too. Although I would like to be motivated to do some organizing and purging in most of the house. Guess you have to start somewhere. Maybe we'll start tomorrow! :) For now, it's off to bed so that we can get up and meet the trainer in the morning! I better be well rested for that because I'm sure I'll be tired and sore when he's done with me.

yeah, sorry for that last post. i'm ok. at least i know what the hell is wrong with me and that it's time to admit i can't do it on my own. to be fair to myself, i DID do it on my own for a nice, long time. then my discs started bulging and our house caught on fire and i am living in a rented house with rented furniture and people are asking me to pick out bathtub enclosures from a 2" X 3" black and white photo and asking me what stain i want on cupboards that i can't even envision and...you get the idea. i'm a bit overwhelmed.

i have a couple of exciting, fun new acquisitions, but i'll save them until tomorrow when i can take decent pics. natalie is using my rebel and i'm finding the limitations of my little point and shoot canon.

i met my girlyfriend, jan, for knitting last week. it did me a world of good. we've decided to make it a weekly date and she must hold me to it or i'll retreat into my rented nest and hide. i could easily be a knitting howard hughes, only without the beard. or the money. or the tissue boxes on my feet.

oh! oh! excitement here. dan, the king of whywouldineedaniphone has earmarked the stimulus check for iphones for us. of course the price decrease has influenced him, as has the total awesomeness of my iPod touch. i could not resist the opportunity to get in a dig regarding the conspicuous absence of a cool MS phone on the market. he he. sometimes it's fun to have a mixed marriage, but only when i win.

The festivities in town are less than two miles away at the local high school. Therefore, Mike and I put the kids to bed, had some dinner and then stepped out onto our front steps to watch the fireworks. My (cool) camera has a "Fireworks" setting! This is the first time I've used it...not *the* best pictures, but the following were taken from our steps last night.

Mike took today off from work (WOO HOO!) and we played in the back yard pretty much all day with the kids. We hit church this morning (it's just not the same with no one working in the nursery!!) and then came home to the pool and fun in the sun. A good day was had by all *grin*

Fun Food on the 4th

Mike Grilled up some *really* tasty stuff: Steak, ribs, hotdogs, kielbasa, potatoes, peppers, onions, and zucchini. And we made some corn as well. The pan fried version of it all was darn good last night too. On the 4th, we also had watermelon...Burke's 1st piece was almost as big as him! :) (yes, he had more than one...and then more for breakfast yesterday!!)

missed one. damn. knew it would happen, but didn't think it would be so soon. m and the kids will leave for camping tomorrow and i will assault our disintegrating bathroom. i'm hoping to get some writing done as well. of course, there is often a great disparity between the way things will work out and the fantasy of just how much stuff i'll get done. m reminded me that last time she left me alone i started smoking again. those were pretty hard times. p, my stepfather since i was 17, was dying of leukemia. i was trying to be supportive of my mother, though it was so uncomfortable to be around her. it was better i smoked than started drinking again. i remember that just before we found out about p i had decided that it would be best if we had little to no contact with them. we were feeling weirder and weirder about leaving them unsupervised with the kids. our feelings of obligation overrode our deep knowing as parents. when we found out about p, i wanted to stay connected so i could help my mother through her grieving, as psychotic as i expected it would get. i have never wanted her to suffer, and heaven knows i've sacrificed parts of myself to make sure she wouldn't hurt. of course writing that makes me feel guilty, but so does everyother f-ing thing i do. at least things are not as bad as they used to be. onward and upward. longer letter later.

Sunday evening and I have to go back to work tomorrow after a week off. I am looking forward to spending the day in air conditioning with the predictability of a day at my desk. This past week has been exhausting. I need some dullness!

I finally mowed my lawn Friday and everything outside looks so much better now, civilized and peaceful. That evening I went up to Blizzard's. Though we didn't go out to see fireworks, a neighbor across the road set off a bunch which we watched from the living room window. Yesterday we spent almost ten hours at a party at the lake. It was a perfect day to be on the lake. Blizzard water-skied as I watched from the boat (my attempts at water-skiing result only in water up my nose). Once it got dark the party host and others set off about a thousand dollars worth of fireworks. I've never had such a close view of that kind of fireworks extravaganza. It was fun, though quite loud, and I breathed in too much sulfur. In the end, I drank too much cheap beer and didn't sleep well last night.

We went for a walk this morning then headed over to my parents' house for yet another party. I was on margarita duty though I didn't drink any myself, just sips from Blizzard's cup. He napped in a living room chair while all the rowdy people were outside being rowdy.

I've had too much sun, though no sun burns. I am home alone with my two kitties. I brought Betty home from my parents' house today. The windows are open and birds are tweeting and chirping. I look forward to a good sleep in my comfortable bed with my kitties purring nearby.

Tomorrow is my brother Edmund's birthday. He would have been twenty-nine. It's hard to imagine him as old as that. He is forever seventeen.

Shaunie Sharper has been crankin on some new tracks as of late. Although he has been extremely busy this summer, he has definitely put some time aside to keep up his productions. His sound is purely represented in these productions, holding no reservations as to how he should sound. Moving around within his electro bang bus, he has pulled heavily from his influences to generate a composite sound original to Shaunie and Shaunie alone. Have a taste...
