Apesar de ter apoiado inicialmente o formato de alta definição HD DVD, que entretanto deixou de ser apoiado pela sua fabricante Toshiba, esta nova solução poderá indicar que a Microsoft estará também rendida à tecnologia da Sony.

Além do suporte para Blu-ray este Windows Feature Pack for Storage tem como novidades uma aplicação de segurança que permite restringir o acesso a dispositivos portáteis ao PC do usuário e o suporte a um novo driver para cartões eletrônicos.

Toshiba introduced a new DVD player with "extended Detail Enhancement (XDE), designed to deliver "near HD" picture quality from standard DVDs. The Toshiba XD-E500 launches with a suggested retail price of $149, quite a bit cheaper than the entry level Blu-ray players. (Cynopsis 8/20)

Some iPods sold in 2005 and 2006 may have a battery defect that causes the units to overheat and, in the case of one report out of Japan, shoot out sparks. Apple says the defect is extremely rare and can be traced to the work of a single supplier of the first-generation iPod Nano. International Herald Tribune/Associated Press (8/20)

A pesar de haber conseguido derrotar al HD-DVD, tampoco se puede decir que Blu-ray haya conseguido triunfar entre los usuarios, ni como soporte para películas en alta definición ni como soporte de grabación, a causa de los costes más elevados que con otros sistemas.

¿Lo conseguirá algún día? Probablemente, igual que el DVD acabó sustituyendo al CD como soporte mayoritario para la grabación. Pero para eso hace falta que se cumplan diversos factores: una reducción del precio de las unidades y del medio físico, un mayor soporte por parte de los sistemas operativos y algo de tiempo para que los usuarios lo adopten como algo común.

Microsoft da un primer paso en el soporte con el anuncio del lanzamiento de Feature Pack for Storage, un conjunto de complementos para sus sistemas operativos que, entre otras cosas, implementa soporte para Blu-ray.

Este Feature Pack for Storage estará disponible para Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 y 2008 y permitirá la grabación de discos Blu-ray desde el propio sistema operativo, sin necesidad de aplicaciones adicionales.

Será, por tanto, el primer sistema operativo en incluir soporte para Blu-ray integrado, algo que, más que probablemente, se trasladará también a próximas versiones de Windows, como el futuro Windows 7 que está en desarrollo en estos momentos y se espera para 2010.

Con distintos fabricantes ofreciendo la opción de incorporar unidades de Blu-ray de forma opcional en sus ordenadores, es solo cuestión de tiempo que la economía de escala haga reducir considerablemente su precio y situarlo a un nivel que permita sustituir a las actuales unidades de DVD, igual que estas sustituyeron a las unidades compatibles solo con CDs.

¿De cuanto tiempo estamos hablando? Pues es difícil decir una fecha, pues será un proceso de transición bastante largo, pero apostaría por que, cuando se lance esta nueva versión de Windows, el Blu-ray ya será algo bastante generalizado.

Mientras tanto, otros sistemas operativos siguen ignorados, al menos en lo que respecta a la reproducción de películas. Ni Mac OS X ni Linux disponen, hasta el momento, de ninguna aplicación que permita la reproducción de títulos en este formato, por lo que para verlos es necesario irse Windows.

Algo mejor es la situación para los que quieren utilizar estos discos como formato de almacenamiento, ya que en ambos sistemas existen aplicaciones para grabación. En el caso de Mac OS X la mayoría de unidades vienen con algún programa de este tipo, mientras que en Linux cualquier distribución incluye software para la grabación.

¿Por qué los Mac no implementan soporte para Blu-ray? Teniendo en cuenta que Apple es uno de los fabricantes que está detrás de este formato, uno podría pensar que hubieran sido de los primeros en implementar soporte para Blu-ray en sus ordenadores, pero hasta ahora ni rastro de ello.

Ya no es que no lo implementen integrado en el sistema operativo, es que ni siquiera se ofrece la opción de añadir una unidad de este tipo al adquirir uno de sus ordenadores, debiendo recurrir a otros fabricantes para ello. Aunque los rumores apuntan a que no lo añaden para favorecer la venta de películas a través de iTunes, no hay que olvidar que Blu-ray es, también, un medio de almacenamiento de alta capacidad. Si un DVD ya empieza a quedarse corto, dependiendo del uso, un disco Blu-ray sería la opción más lógica para sustituirlo.

De momento, el usuario común, prudentemente, espera para ver hacia donde se dirigirá la situación antes de decidirse a apostar por este formato, todavía desconocido para muchos. Probablemente será la opción más sensata, pues ni los precios ni el contenido en este formato son, de momento, lo suficientemente atractivos para impulsar su uso.

Si bien es cierto que es sólo un diseño conceptual, y que la compañía no está pasando por sus mejores momentos para andarse con bromas, el futurible Motorola Sparrow no deja de ser una idea que puede alumbrar nuestras compras en un futuro.

Los laboratorios de Microsoft esconden un proyecto que dicen que será el sustituto definitivo de Windows, y abrirá una nueva era en la concepción de los sistemas operativos. Su nombre en código es Midori y funcionará de manera muy distinta a los sistemas anteriores de Microsoft, pues se centrará en Internet y no dependerá de la computadora.

Das liegt vornehmlich erst einmal daran, dass ich ja keinen PC mehr zu Hause stehen habe, und so nur auf der Arbeit bloggen könnte. Allerdings sollte auch jedem anderen Blogger relativ klar sein, dass selbst so kurze Beiträge wie von mir, die vielleicht nur ein paar Zeilen darstellen relativ zeitaufwändig ist. Eintrag schreiben, 5mal umschreiben, Rechtschreibfehler beseitigen, evntl. noch Bilder suchen... es ist halt doch irgendwie Arbeit, und ich möchte jetzt nicht unbedingt meine komplette Mittagspause damit verbringen.

Aber keine Angst, PC-los werde ich nicht bleiben, nur liegen im Moment die Prioritäten ein wenig anders. Dazu vielleicht ein wenig mehr.

Wie im letzten Artikel geschrieben habe ich mir bei germanoffice.net den schicken Samsung LE-3786BD LCD Fernseher bestellt. Nach einer Woche ohne jegliche Rückmeldung habe ich mal vorsichtig angefragt, wann ich denn mit dem verschicken meines Fernsehers rechnen könnte. Garnicht meinte man an der Hotline, das Gerät sei längst aus dem Programm genommen. Das fand ich dann doch ein wenig unbefriedigend, schließlich bin ich nicht darüber informiert worden, und nach 45 Minuten versuchen jemanden von der Hotline ans Telefon zu bekommen hätten mit positivere Neuigkeiten sicherlich mehr gefreut.

Aber es gibt ja noch Alternate.de, die mir das Gerät dann bereits einen Tag später(sic!) auch wirklich zugeschickt haben. Leider war mir zu dem Zeitpunkt noch nicht klar, dass bei solch großen Paketen die Auslieferung 4-5 Tage dauert, denn sonst hätte ich sicherlich die Express Option gewählt ;-)

Nachdem ich die Xbox 360 über das Komponentenkabel angeschlossen hab (ich habe noch eine original Box ohne HDMI, in dieser Hinsicht irgendwie schade das ich noch keinen Ring of Death hatte ;-)) war ich über das Ergebnis recht erfreut, Spiele sahen gleich viel besser aus, vorallem weil ich jetzt nicht mehr das Scaling Problem und das falsche Bildverhältnis des 22" Displays habe.
Leider aber hier wieder eine Enttäuschung. Obwohl die Xbox 360 an sich ganz klar 1080p unterstützt, springt diese bei HD-DVDs immer auf 1080i um. Das führt zu fiesem Ghosting bei meinem Display, scheinbar geht da was beim DeInterlacing schief. Also musste noch ein HD-DVD Player mit 1080p24 her (wenn, dann richtig).

Ursprünglich hatte ich mir hier den Toshiba HD-EP35 ausgesucht, im Grunde das einzige Modell mit brauchbarem Preis-/Leistungsverhältnis (wir reden hier schließlich über ein totes Format). Nachdem ich allerdings herausgefunden habe, dass der HD-EP10 nachträglich per Update ebenfalls 1080p24 Unterstützung bekommen hat, und man diesen sogar DVD-Codefree schalten kann, nunja es war eine leichte Entscheidung. Ergenbis: 1080p24 über HDMI ist einfach toll, und das funktioniert sogar korrekt bei DVDs. Ich frage mich daher warum es eigentlich keine DVD-Player mit 480p24 gab, bzw mit Upscaling auf 1080p24.

Im übrigen, falls sich wer frag ob Upscaling bei DVDs wirklich so viel bringt, ja das tut es! Leider sind die eingebauten Scaler in Displays durchgehend für die Tonne. Früher musste man sich da mit externen Scalern herumschlagen, aber moderne DVD-Player kriegen das auch wirklich gut hin.

Jedenfalls habe ich dann gestern noch eine Firmware Update Session gemacht um den HD-EP10 Codefree zu machen (das dauert recht lang, weil man das Gerät erst auf eine bestimmte Version bringen muss, dann das Codefree Update einspielen und dann das Update auf Firmware 2.700 weil alles darüber den Paramount Flicker-Bug hat, brrrr) und bin jetzt endgültig zufrieden. Ja ihr habt richtig gelesen, der Meckerhannes ist zufrieden.

Ah, the Internet: you use it every day for school, work or fun. In such a short period of time, the Net has grown into an essential every day thing that it's hard to imagine life without it.

But how much do you know about the Internet? Did you know that you have the Soviets to thank for this wonderful invention? Or that despite the flack that he got for inventing the Internet, Al Gore actually did play a major role in the creation of the Net?

Here are [just a couple of] the 10 Things You Should Know About the Internet:

1. Sputnik: Kick in the Pants that Launched the Net

In 1957, the Soviet launched Sputnik (Russian for "traveling companion" or "satellite"), the first man-made object to orbit the Earth. It was a big surprise to the United States, who feared that it was falling behind technologically against its Cold War enemy.

In direct response to Sputnik, President Dwight D. Eisenhower directed the Department of Defense to create the Advanced Research Projects Agency or ARPA in 1958. One of its research programs was headed by Dr. J.C. R. Licklider (or simply "Lick"), who convinced the U.S. Government to create a computer network, which would later evolve into the Internet.

Licklider, in his epic 1963 memo to "Members and Affiliates of the Intergalactic Computer Network" (Yes, that's right - "Intergalactic") explored the challenges in creating ARPANET, the precursor to today's Internet.

So, who says war isn't good for anything? The Internet is arguably one of the most important technologies that came out of the Cold War.

5. Al Gore Actually Did Create the Internet. Sort Of.

"Remember America, I gave you the Internet and I can take it away," joked Al Gore on the Late Show with David Letterman.

Okay, I was being cheeky with that heading. But here's the story: During the 2000 U.S. Presidential Election, Al Gore took quite a drubbing for the claim that he "invented" the Internet. Problem was, Gore made no such claim. During an interview with Wolf Blitzer on CNN, Gore was asked how he would distinguish himself from others, and he replied:

During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system. ...

Though the term "initiative in creating the Internet" is vague, Gore did quite a bit of legislative work in creating a high-capacity national data network that is a significant part of the Internet. And don't forget: though Gore didn't coin it, he did popularize the term "information superhighway."

10. The Rise of Social Networking and Social Media

In a way, the Web is a big social network. Even before there was the Web, BBSes served as online communities where people chatted and collaborated. But the term "social networking" became a buzzword when it was reported in 2005 that MySpace had more pageviews than Google (Source).

But before MySpace, there was Classmates.com (launched in 1995) and SixDegrees.com (launched in 1997, dead by 2001). Afterwards, more successful websites followed: Friendster, MySpace, Orkut, LinkedIn and Facebook. And how successful were they? MySpace was sold to Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. for $580 million and Facebook is now valued in the billions of dollars).

There's a social networking website for everybody under the sun: Like movies? There's Flixster. Online games? Avatars United. Anime? Gaia Online. Books? LibraryThing and so on. (Wikipedia has a huge list of social networking sites here)

On the other side of the new Internet are social media websites. The term "social media" is kind of a hodgepodge (Wikipedia, blogs like Neatorama, and videosharing websites like YouTube can all be classified as social media). But all of them have one thing in common: they encourage active interaction and participation of their users.

An interesting subset of the social media websites are social news sites like Digg, reddit and Mixx. These user-driven websites let people discover and share content on the Internet in a social way: users submit and vote on others' submissions to determine which links get featured prominently on the websites' front pages.

But there is a darker-side to social media website. The "Digg Revolt" on May 1, 2007 (remember that?), over the AACS encryption key controversy illustrates how the "social" in social media can be a double-edged sword:

Digg.com has become one of the Web's top news portals by putting the power to choose the news in the hands of its users. Just how much power they wield, however, only became clear one Tuesday night almost a year ago, when Digg turned into what one user called a "digital Boston Tea Party."

When the site's administrators attempted to prevent users from posting links to pages revealing the copyright encryption key for HD-DVD discs, Digg's users rebelled. Hundreds of references to the code flooded the site's submissions, filling its main pages and overwhelming the administrators' attempts to control the site's content. (Source)

Ultimately, Digg admins capitulated to its users' demands and stopped deleting stories with the forbidden codes.

En esta ocasión le toca el turno a una Vaio, uno de sus productos estrella para el hogar y la oficina, que viene con una pantalla extendida y la capacidad de reproducir en aquella pantallota el formato ya mencionado.

Sin embargo no lo comunican de una manera institucional o informativa, y sí de una manera más homogénea y “natural” que ideó la agencia 180 con sede en Los Angeles:

Creo que personalmente no me gustaría cambiar mi LCD y mi reproductor Blue Ray por una portátil Vaio de 17” de pantalla (aunque si fuera una Power Book lo pensaría), pero de que el link entre la “gran” pantalla y la reproducción del formato grande de hoy en día se entiende, ni duda.

Si la decisión hubiera quedado en mi hubiera sido menos pretencioso y le quitaría el logo de Windows que ahí aparece, pero quién creen que pagó parte de este anuncio ;)
