After the previous incident with the Vizier/Lich Lord, Wolf certainly felt a bit bad. It is not ever

After the previous incident with the Vizier/Lich Lord, Wolf certainly felt a bit bad. It is not everyday a so called hero contributes to the end of the world as we know it - it certainly would not look good on the CV for any hero...

So there was not much else to do than to try to get rid of the Titans and the Lich Lord.

Starting with the Titans, it seemed that by opening the Door of Komalie this allowed for some Titan Portals to open, which now need to be closed again. Of course, these are deep into Titan-infested territory.

The Titans resembles to a large extent their surrounding with lava, rock and fire - but they are easy to distinguish from the environment due to that they tend to move and attack. Not only do they attack, but some formations of the Titans become other formations when they are killed.
So when a Burning Titan was killed, it transformed into a Risen Ashen Hulk (piece of rock thing). When a Hulk was killed it turned into two other creatures, Hand of the Titans and Fist of the Titans (glowing rock creatures).

In addition to this a bunch of fire imp like creatures called Sparks of the Titans also ran around in the area. Luckily these did not turn into other creatures when killed, but were quite good in making damage.

[caption id="attachment_538" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Can you spot the Armageddon Lords?"][/caption]

So a group of 3-4 creatures could often end up being a fight with 8-10 creatures and each group took a bit of time. On top of that Mr L Lord popped up every now and then to mock the team...

Finally Wolf's arrived to an area which seemed to contain both the Titan Portals as well as a big bunch of Titan guys patrolling the Portal area. On top of that, three Armageddon Lords were also standing nearby with their backs turned.

First things first, the regular way of dealing with lots of enemies is the good old pulling trick. Luckily the Titan fellows did not seem to be too social and it was fairly easy to pull just one at a time of most of the Titans. And one Titan at a time is quite easy to deal with.
[caption id="attachment_539" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="I spy some Titan portals..."][/caption]

The whole process took a while, but finally the area near the portals was clear. Each portal was guarded by 3 portal wraiths, which had to be killed to close each portal. With all portal wraiths killed, all portals were closed and this triggered the interest of our good old evil-doer the Lich Lord.

Destroying the portals did not seem to cause any major concern for LL, or at least he did not show it. Instead he summoned up a few Titans and a surprise guest to the show, the undead corpse of Prince Rurik. I must admit it took a bit longer than a few nanoseconds to remember who Rurik was actually, since it was so long ago in the story. But then Wolf remembered and felt a bit embarrased for not remembering - it was his former boss after all...

After this summoning Mr Lord moved on to do some other evil-doer stuff.

With a bit of pulling Wolf's posse managed to reduce the number of Titans a bit before actually causing Prince Rurik to attack. Prince Rurik was really sorry about the whole thing, said he was just following orders etc. Eventually Wolf's team defeated Rurik and the other summoned Titans there.
Rurik passed on a hint to defeat the Lich Lord - beat him in the caldera area where the Door to Komalie was opened and the door would be closed again and the threat from the Titans would end.
[caption id="attachment_541" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="Closed door, Dead Lich"][/caption]
Considering the circumstances that sounded like a good tip and Wolf's team headed of for the caldera area.
Of course Mr Lich was there, along with a few Titans as well. The nearby Titans were defeated and then it was time for Lich himself. Being a big bad guy, LL is a level 30 enemy, which is higher than most encounters. The whole team started with the beating, which worked ok. Mr Lich had a habit though of teleporting himself back and forth, which caused some running around - sometimes into burning lava.
When the team throught he was killed through he just regained all his health a gain and the team had to start over. Some more Titans appeared also, which were taken care of before continuing with LL.
Finally Mr Lord was killed again and although he seemed to regain health again this seemed to be considered an actual real hero-does-the-job kill and the victory cutscene started to roll a fraction of a second later.

The World is saved! For real this time!

Lots of cheering and celebrations and Wolf was presented with a reward from the king of the creepy dwarves, His Highness Jails Ironhammer himself.

Now Wolf has finally and officially become one of the Cool Guys, have unlocked Hard Mode for the campaign, can access some end-game areas and probably have unlocked a few more cool skills also.

And yeah, he saved Tyria also...

Last time Wolf and his gang had started their path through the Ring of Fire mission, but ran into problem with the local wildlife. This time through a more careful approach was taken and as a result progress was much better.

After circling the Mursaat compound the Wolf team attacked the guard house from "behind" and managed to work our way a few Mursaat troops to get to the end and taking control of the guard house area. When this was done, the path to the entrance of the volcano, aka Abaddon's Mouth, was available.

Once this was done our old buddy Vizier Khilborn popped up again to say a few words for the dead dwarf Brechnar Ironhammer, who had joined the posse but ran off and got himself killed right at the start.

[caption id="attachment_525" align="alignright" width="299" caption="Fighting the Jade warriors"][/caption]

Next task was to enter the Abaddon's Mouth area and break through the defences the Mursaat had set up in order to open the Door of Komalie. Right at the start Vizier Khilborn dropped in to cheer us on, but as usual he soon disappeared again.

Fights from this point was mainly groups of Mursaat and their Jade warrior buddies. Also there were a number of doors (not Komalie) to be broken through which were sealed with Ether Seals, which needed some care and removal of nearby Mursaat/Jade troops first.

Wolf and his gang had gotten used to this fighting through, so it did not pose too much trouble. Once in a while there was a boss to fight as well. This was not much of a problem either, since there was generally only one boss and many of the regular enemies nearby could be pulled before taking care of the boss.

[caption id="attachment_527" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="One of the Abaddons Mouth gates"][/caption]

When getting a bit closer to the Komalie area there were two bosses in front of an ether sealed gate. This fight took longer than most of the other fights in the area, but in the end they were defeated.

[caption id="attachment_528" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Mursaat boss fight"][/caption]
When Wolf's team finally arrived to the Door of Komalie area it turned out that the door itself was more of the virtual kind, a magical entity to another dimension or something like that - not entirely surprising.

This was sealed by 6 ether seals in the middle of a caldera area. Whenever a seal was broken, a bunch of ghosts appeared and attacked the team. The Mursaat had not yet given up either and there was a regular stream of Mursaat guardians arriving to the festivities.
[caption id="attachment_530" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Vizier Khilborn, aka the Lich Lord"][/caption]

Finally the last seal was broken! The Door of Komalie opened! The rule of Mursaat is broken ! The world is saved!

...not!

Our Vizier buddy turned out to be the nasty guy that was shown a glimpse of a long time ago, the Lich Lord. By opening the Door of Komalie it allowed a bunch of creatures called the Titans to enter our world. By using the Scepter of Orr, the Lich Lord controlled these creatures and sent them out to conquer the various parts of Tyria. Real bummer...

I have not yet mentioned that I made some tough decisions last night: I uninstalled World of Warcraft. You can consider this my final and permanent goodbye to that game.

I also uninstalled Guild Wars and non-MMOs Europa Universalis III and Sins of a Solar Empire, all of which are good games but none of which I was playing at all. My departure from these should be regarded as less final; they're easy enough to reinstall and patch.

Since the entire game of Guild Wars is (well, was) strongly based on interacting with other players,

Since the entire game of Guild Wars is (well, was) strongly based on interacting with other players, I decided to base the emotional account on playing the game in general, not on specific features (although those features were included. I had my girlfriend, who frequently plays the game, take note of her emotional states, as well as letting me observe her attitude, while playing different areas of Guild Wars.

Player vs. Environment (PvE)

With random players: In general, she was frustrated when playing with a Pick Up Group (PUG) for a couple of reasons. The first reasons deals with the people in the group. PUGs are, according to her, "immature, disagreeable, and don't like to listen, causing annoyance and bad tempers for the whole group." Her mood was more irritable when having to deal with these types of people. This leads to the second reason; deaths. Dieing requires you to, depending on what the group is doing, a: run from a ressurection point to where you left off, or b: restart the mission entirely. When this just happened once per mission, it didn't cause that much emotional change, just a minor annoyance. But when it happened 2, 3, 4 times on the same mission, and people were still making the same mistakes, she was using some pretty colorful language.

With friends/guildmates: Playing with her friends and guildmates caused a much cheerful and pleasant emotional status. Her explanation was that because she knows those people and their playing style, she knows there will be fewer deaths, causing less frustration. She can "talk conversationally while still getting the job done."

With AI controlled NPCs: She appeared blank, so-to-speak. She wasn't booming with excitement or yelling with anger. The main purpose of playing with the NPCs was to just get specific quests done so she can progress through the rest of the game. Deaths, however, we're still frustrating to her, yet not as severe as with bad PUGs.

Player vs. Player (PvP)

The PvP area of the game ended up influencing both positive and negative emotions, depending on how the game was going. The thought of competing versus other players, no matter how the game was going, caused a more focused and competitive attitude. Being able to interrupt other player's skills, getting one last attack to kill him, or running away from them to stay alive gave a rush of excitement.

Anger and aggression occurred when her team wasn't planning strategies or trying to win, or when the entire other team was focusing only on killing her. When players were busy insulting each other instead of trying to play, she started getting very annoyed and angry towards them.

When certain spells or conditions were put on her, she suddenly became very slightly peeved; examples of this were a crippling condition, causing her to move slower, or a spell which made her skills activate slower. These skills were part of the game, however, and she knew they were something she had to overcome to not be killed.

Guild Wars as a whole

This response is based upon her reported felt experience. Not everyone will react to the game in the same way. Some people may find watching people argue funny instead of annoying. (I sure do.)

Guild Wars is fun and enjoyable to her, otherwise she probably wouldn't be playing it. Guild Wars' ever-changing meta-game gives something to keep her interested in, and by finding players who aren't completely clueless, makes the game even more pleasant to play. It's simplistic style causes less confusion, which will cause more entertainment, which is obviously a good thing.

Another weekend and some more adventures with Wolf and his posse in the world of Tyria. After beatin

Another weekend and some more adventures with Wolf and his posse in the world of Tyria. After beating up some Mursaat it was time to lend a hand to the friendly dwarf tribes. Apparently Mr J Ironhammer, a well-known dwarf king, had run into a bit of trouble with the Stone Summit dwarves, who had captured the city and fort of Thunderhead Keep.

His Highness Ironhammer considered Wolf and his gang to owe him one after earlier assistance when escaping from Ascalon, so he simply wanted a bit of payback assistance.

[caption id="attachment_518" align="alignright" width="300" caption="So where are the ski slopes?"][/caption]

Being a hero, how could Wolf say no? Besides, there was a rumor that the Thunderhead area had some of the best skiing in the region so maybe there would be some time to go off-pist afterwards. And perhaps sit down by a hut in the slope and sip some Jägermeister and get some tan...

But first things first; Thunderhead Keep needed to be cleared. Wolf's team set out and soon found various Stone Summit groups patrolling the facilities - some local giants and ice elementals had also been hired by the SS troops to assist in the fighting.

A bit of careful fighting one group at a time soon cleared both the city area and the fort. However, at this time it seemed that the White Mantle and the Mursaat did not agree on having Mr Ironhammer in charge; they launched numerous attacks on the fort and Wolf's gang got tasked by Mr Ironhammer to hold the fort.

At this point in the mission it is possible to light some beacons to attract more Mursaat. If one does not light them up the attacks are quite manageable; only a Mursaat boss fight might provide a bit more challenge, depending on which boss shows up - there seem to be at least 2 different possibilities.
My guess is that with some timing lighting the beacons the extra Mursaat might not be much trouble. But getting more Mursaat during the boss fight was a bit painful though.

The Mursaat gets mixed up with some White Mantle, the last group to attack is one containing confessor Dorian. When he and his group is killed the fort is saved.

Just as Wolf and his gang was about to go get some R&R and Jägermeister, the King of Orr aka Vizier Khilborn quite literary popped up and said that it was time to head to the Ring of Fire area and beat up some more Mursaat. He seemed a bit eager on that point... Probably more into hanging around on beaches than skiing.

[caption id="attachment_519" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Ghostly octopus creatures, what will they think of next?"][/caption]

So no time off and Wolf and the team had to pack for a slightly warmer climate. While travelling to the designated area Wolf's posse had to take out a few White Mantle bigshots, which was quite easily handled.

Next mission now was to get to the heavily guarded Door of Komalie, which supposedly is containing some tool/weapon/power/whatever to defeat the Mursaat once and for all. This part Wolf's team have started, but have not finished - first attemps lead to defeat due to a few too large groups of lava spitters, some nasty spider-like creatures which are quite easy to take care of one by one. They seem to be quite social though, which caused some initial trouble. More on that probably next weekend....

Meine kleine Mönchin seit Anfang an dabei.

Bloß nichts Neues machen, nur der 'State of the Art' zählt.

At the Penny Arcade Expo ArenaNet had their own session where they talked about the whole lore of Guild Wars. From the beginning of tyria until the present day. And they also had a open question and answer session about the game.

Now I was wondering about the huge gap between Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2. I mean 250 years is a lot of time, and a huge gap between games. ArenaNet is teaming up with Pocket Books, for something that we haven't really seen before. They are taking those 250 years, and turning it into a 3 part book series. It's not entirely a new thing because there are tons of books based off of games or vice versa. But what is cool about this is most game books aren't actually written by the company that made the game. They are usually written by the gamers. These books are going to be written by ArenaNet.

Also for you other gaming book junkies there is also a book in production about the life of Arthas Menethil. So if you played Warcraft 3 or just excited for Wrath of The Lich King then this book is a most.

The author owns Game Gimp, a gaming community website where users can create guilds and recruit others.

WAR hasn’t stuck for me yet. I don’t feel any emotional attachment to my character, and I’m

WAR hasn’t stuck for me yet. I don’t feel any emotional attachment to my character, and I’m not having as much fun as I am playing offline games like The Witcher or Sid Meier’s Pirates. Fun. There’s the key word. Something becomes less fun if you have to do it repetitively over a sustained period of time. I’m talking about the staple MMO gameplay of WAR and WoW. You quest to gain experience. You kill things by targeting them and selecting skills from an action bar- this is basically the same in PvE and PvP. I’ve been doing it for nearly 3 years and my attention span has long since passed.

I’m looking for something else, as evidenced by my foray into Pirates of the Burning Sea at the weekend. Potbs didn’t do it but that was mainly down to technical deficiencies and the overall quality of the product rather than any lack of innovative gameplay. The games are out there, I just don’t think I’ve tried them yet. Here’s a list of where the possible saviours could lie…

Age of Conan – From the outside looking in the combat looks as though it is reminiscent of The Witcher, i.e. much more involved and ‘difficult’ than that found in WoW or WAR. However, from reports I’ve read, the quest system is the same or even more grindy than the other two games.

EVE Online – Certainly the progression model is different, and on the face of it questing is too. For a start they’ve a different name- Missions- but they also don’t actually advance your character at all asides from financially. The steep learning curve put me off last time I downloaded a free trial- I have doubts if it’s suitable for a predominantly solo player.

Bounty Bay Online – It’s a Pirate MMO, released a few months before potbs. At the time the general consensus seemed to be that people should wait for potbs, but then that turned out to be pap, so I guess that means BBO must be more pap…. On the plus side… it’s free, sustained by optional micro transactions which no doubt ‘enhance’ your gameplay.

Second Life – I would raise the question whether this is actually a game at all, or just a, well… second life. It is certainly online, multiplayer, and it’s certainly very different to any of the above. But I guess I just figured that it’s something for teenagers and p******. By all means rant at me if I’m way off the mark there.

Guild Wars – Would like some more info on this one. There is a level cap of 20 which is reached fairly early in your career, and thereafter your performance is determined by which skills you choose for given situations, up to a maximum of 8. That said, these skills are still assigned to an action bar as per WoW.

Tabula Rasa – MMO meets FPS, but is anyone still playing this?

Any others? I checked out this list on Wikipedia, but to be honest I hadn’t heard of half of them, so they probably range from WoW clones to 3D chatrooms. I need to make a decision because when I’ve finished The Witcher I’ll get that MMO itch again. I’d like to be prepared.

Druid Ranger is the second armor set from Guild Wars series by Caverna Obscura. Now Guild Wars fans can wear their fave outfits in SL, too! :)

[caption id="attachment_204" align="aligncenter" width="497" caption="Guild Wars' Druid Ranger Armor by Caverna Obscura"][/caption]

This is my attempt to recreate the look and feel of Druid Ranger Armor of Guild Wars game. Apart from that, it's just the ultimate elven/druid outfit!! A must-have if you feel at home in the woods, if you're an elven warrior, especially archer! :)

The prim parts of this set are made mostly of sculpted prims, with a few normal prims thrown in here and there. :) All sculpties are exquisite and custom made by me (as usual!), individually textured with hand painted textures. For the record: this set has beaten all my uploading textures records - is consists of as much as 40 different textures, sculted and normal!! :D

The original Druid Ranger armor from Guild Wars has a shirt with one long sleeve and one short sleeve. Because the texture for the body of SL avatar only has one sleeve which is being used for both arms, it's impossible to create any non-symmetrical sleeves design. That's why this outfit comes with both a sleeveless shirt and a longsleeved shirt. That way you can decide for yourself which way you want to wear your sleeves. :) I have used my own textures (of course!) but i tried to keep it as close as possible to the original outfit.

This outfit includes:
Clothing layers: Longsleeved Undershirt, sleeveless Shirt, Underpants, Pants, Gloves, Shoe base, Corset on Jacket layer;
Prim parts (mostly sculpted): shoulder mantel, upper R arm plate made of sticks and leaves, upper L arm attachment with pouch, lower R arm straps with leaves, L arm bracer with sticks, belt with straps and pouches, boots.

It is recommended to try Demo first because of the sculpted prims it may be tricky or even impossible to fit some of the items. That's why i've also included a modifyable shape to wear with the armor to be sure it fits. You can give it your own usual face and maybe even some other body parts! :P The DEMO prim parts are no mod but they are scripted to resize.

So far ranger Wolf had avoided too much confontation with the Mursaat, since their Spectral Agony skill did some severe damage. But there is a remedy for this, which can be obtained from a seer deep into the area of the Iron Mines of Moladune.

[caption id="attachment_510" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Hi Mr Seer, any infusion available?"][/caption]

The team worked their way through a number of Stone Summit dwarves, Tundra Giants, some Mountain Trolls and a few Griffons. Further ahead of the path close to the seer location (which was all the way at the other end of the zone, of course...) there were also some more spectral creatures to deal with in the form of Azure Shadows. A bit monkey like and sometimes appearing right out of nowhere.

Finally getting to the seer's location the fellow told Wolf's posse that he was of a race that had fought the Mursaat for a long time. It seems though that the prophecies had told that Wolf was the guy to help get rid of those Mursaat once and for all, so he would help the team. The seer's race had some protection for the devastating agony power of the Mursaat, which they could help with to apply to the team's armor.

There was only a tiny little creature to kill for that...

The creature was a somewhat large octopus-like floating thing called Eidolon. Taking care of Eidolon was no big trouble and the seer infused the team's armor.

So now was the time to test the infused armor and see if it worked and try to complete the actual main objective of the mission - kill the Shining Blade traitor Markis and his posse.

A slightly different path was reachable from the seer location, with some White Mantle and Mursaat. A few Mursaat would normally be a bad thing to encounter, but now witht he infused armor it worked just fine and the Mursaat were no more difficult than other level 24 enemies (and their level 28 bosses).

Wolf's gang followed the road south, ignoring some White Mantle/Mursaat constellations which were not on the direct path. This turned out to be good for the bonus part of the mission. A Shining Blade scout further down along the path provided that, which was to kill a Mursaat boss before he escaped though a portal. The boss and his posse spawned nearby, right where I had parked Wolf's team when going to talk to the scout!
[caption id="attachment_511" align="alignright" width="300" caption="The defeat of Markis"][/caption]
Stopping the boss was reasonably easy and the bonus was obtained. Wolf's team continued south only to find them back at the start of the mission and no Markis... Backtracking the steps and looking at the areas with enemies which the group had passed, it turned out that Markis was quite near the location of the seer...

A few Jade Armor elementals spawned when attacking Markis, but overall it was quite manageble. And so the another deed was added to Wolf's increasing list of Things To Do As A Hero.

Guild Wars was developed to influence its playerbase to interact, communicate, and work together to

Guild Wars was developed to influence its playerbase to interact, communicate, and work together to achieve goals, similar to most other MMORPGs. It contains obvious examples of conversation and coordination, but is limited in the awareness, as with most games.

Conversation: The main way to speak to other players is through the chat box, the same as most other online games. Similar to texting or instant-messaging, greetings and breakdowns are almost nonexistant, while hand-offs and adjacent-pairs make up the core of conversations. When joining a group, players will usually use a simple "Hi," if that, to greet, and very rarely will they say a goodbye. Instead, to-the-point forms of communicating are used, handing off the conversation to other players once getting your point out. Adjacent-pairs consist of when immediate action is required, pausing one topic for another, then returning to it.

The chat box as a whole is split up into separate types of communication. Players are allowed to speak to who they want to, whether its in the general chat for the city, trade chat, party, guild, alliance, or private messages to specific players. This allows messages to be sent to anyone, anywhere.

Coordination: Coordination in this game takes place in a number of ways. First off is the party search window. Players enter what their objectives are (ex. what quest they want to complete), and other players will read through these, looking for a match. When they find a player who wants to complete the same thing, they click an Invite button, and the players are grouped togther into a party.

Coordination when actually working on an objective can be done in a couple ways, supporting verbal communication (if you can consider typing verbal). First off is by planning out strategies in the chat box, usually using coordination rules (abbreviating well-known skills needed, or areas of the map to run to [the special language]). The second is using truely verbal communication, which is actually talking to people. Many players will use a VoIP program (Ventrillo, TeamSpeak) to talk to each other. The Conversation rules generally apply to this as well, greetings and breakdowns are extremely short.

The only real example of Shared External Representation is on the game's minimap. Players can actually draw on the minimap, using symbols or pings to issue instructions, or to announce where someone is in a non-verbal way.

Awareness: It's kind of hard to be aware of your surroundings when playing a video game, referring to your physical surroundings, that is. The game is meant to focus your attention on the game, not what's going on around you. There is a small example of being aware of who's near you inside the game. A player who is in the same guild or alliance (a group of guilds) will have their guild tag turn a more visible color, making you more aware of your in-game surrounds in terms of who is near you.

Using the voice-chat programs mentioned earlier is also another way of being aware of player's moods and tones.

After completing the path to Ascension, my ranger Wolf got advised that he should talk to a dragon prophet in the mountains, named Glint.

[caption id="attachment_496" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Chatting with Glint"][/caption]

Dragons probably do not want to be bothered by every person ascending, so it was not just a matter of knocking on the door or give Glint a ring. No, instead Wolf's team had to fight through a number of groups of various creatures, including 6 different Dragon Facets, all in differently coloured crystal cave areas. Some of them had certain environmental effects in place, like slower movement or some amount of health degeneration. Considering that the dragons home was rumored to be contained in single grain of salt, it was quite roomy though.

It was pretty straightforward business for a hero though and it was completyed without much trouble. This was also the point were the max group size increased to the regular size of 8. This took much longer to reach than in Nightfall or Factions.

Glint seemed to be in a reasonably good mood, after all she delivered some doomsday:ish information, based on the Flameseeker Prophecies. But also that Wolf seemed to be a quite cool guy (stating the obvious...) that could make a difference.

The White Mantle seemed to worship a race of magical creatures called the Mursaat. These fellows turns out to be guys who like to float around a bit above ground in a golden outfit. They have a quite devastating attack (which Wolf got some first hand experience of...) and can thus be very tough to fight. But there was a way to get some protection from those attacks. Thus on the agenda Wolf got "get protection first".

But even before that, it was time to save some of the Shining Blade buddies which had been captured by the White Mantle (and the Mursaat). It turns out that they have been taken to an ice cave area - Ice Caves of Sorrow. It also seems that the Stone Summit dwarves consider this area theirs and they are attacking the White Mantle and the Mursaat in the area.

[caption id="attachment_497" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Right, so where is that cave entrance now? "][/caption]
Turns also out that the phrase "the enemy of my enenmy is my friend" does not hold true when it comes to dwarves. The shorter fellows were only too happy to pick a fight with Wolf's team when being approached.

In fact, the dwarves were using some nifty catapults to shoot big deadly stuff on the White Mantle - or anyone else who happened to be in the wrong spot at the wrong time.

It was a pretty nice area to play through and not particularly difficult once you figured out what to do. But getting to that point took a number of attempts though and Wolf's team had a number of defeats before completing the task of recusing and escorting Evinna of the Shining Blade to the ship that took the group out of harms way.

Next time I will probably try to complete the bonus task as well (rescuing a certain dwarf), but for now I was happy to have completed the mission and learning that it is not just about brute force fighting, but fighting smart.

[caption id="attachment_498" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="On the ice ship to safety"][/caption]

Is it just me, or aren't most NPC dwarves in Guild Wars kind of creepy looking?

Let's talk about instancing, in two multiplayer games (MMOs):

     Guild Wars - http://www.guildwars.com

Myst Online: Restoration Experiment - Uru - http:/www.mystonline.com.

From the official Guild wars Wiki - "An instance is a game location that is specifically generated by the game for a party or group…... Instancing allows a party to adventure by itself without other players stealing kills/loot, but also precludes any chance of meeting a random stranger at a secluded location …..." (http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Instance)

Scenario time - I'm in Guild Wars, and I need to find 5 gargoyle skulls. I start in an area with people, and I enter an instance of an area - the catacombs. The area is mine alone to play in. The magic, the beauty, the wonder and the fun - it's all mine! I wander around, and I find some gargoyles - those meanies! I rain fire, and I get my skulls. I leave the catacombs and go back to town.

In Guild Wars an instance is not permanent. When you leave an instanced area, your copy goes away. The next time you go exploring , another copy of the area is generated for you. It sounds disjointed, but it doesn't feel that way. It feels like you exploring the same area. This works because there are things you can accomplish in an hour or two of play.

In Uru instancing is permanent. When I play Uru, areas of the world, called ages, are set up for me as I explore. Unless I decide to reset an age, whatever I do in my private ages stays "done", even if I leave and come back to the age. If I push a lever in Teledahn to turn on power, the next time I enter Teledahn, the power is still on. It makes sense to have permanent instanced ages in Uru because the puzzles are lengthy and complicated. If an age was reset whenever I left - I wouldn't get anywhere! I can also invite people to my private ages - I can share them with friends.

This feature of Uru is very appealing. All of my private ages feel, in some way, like home.

Both Uru and Guild Wars have shared spaces, an area owned by a group of people. Uru calls them neighborhoods. Guild Wars calls them Guild Halls.

Both games have multiplayer public spaces. Guild Wars has towns, estates, outposts. Guild Wars makes copies of the public spaces, so the towns don’t feel too crowded. Each copy of a public space can be visited by any player. If your friends are in a different public space from the one you are in, you can join them. Uru has one public space, Ae'gura, the city. About 100 people at one time can be in the public Ae'gura. Uru also makes copies of the city accessible from the neighborhoods, to enable everyone to visit the city, whenever they want to.

Not all MMO players like instancing. Arenanet plans to reduce instancing for its next game, Guild Wars II, and focus on more of a classic MMO shared game world. But - I want to say to Arenanet - I love instancing! Uru is currently not open for play, but there is some possiblity that it will come back. MORE/Uru will continue to have permanent instanced areas.

Here's what I love about instancing. Online games can be messy, complicated places, particularly for a devoted but intermittent player. They can be annoying to the player who likes both an online world with "people" and a virtual world where you can be alone – or with a few companions. My game time is very limited, and I want to have a good time each time I play. Sometimes I want to experience the beauty and the wonder of the worlds all by myself. I'm social, but there are times when I want to be alone. I don't want to ignore the people in an online space, like you ignore strangers on the street in a real city. Sometimes I want the "people" to not be there at all! I want to control it - I want to be the one who decides when to be with people and when to be alone, in my beautiful online multiplayer worlds.

So please - Uru and Guild Wars - keep my private space!

A few pictures - because I like pictures

[caption id="attachment_282" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Teledahn - a private age"][/caption]

Today I visited the local Mediamarkt store. When I passed by the PC games section I noticed that there were an unusual amount of NCSoft game boxes on the shelves. There has always been plenty of Guold Wars boxes and from time to time a few City of Heroes/Villains boxes. But now there were significantly more boxes.

I noticed that a number of the boxes only cost 19 SEK (rougly 2 Euro, or 3 USD) and there were a number of them, including for Lineage II and City of Heroes/Villains. The text on the box also said "valid for 14 days play".

I.e. NCSoft is selling boxes for the free trial of some of their games. This might actually be a smart move to get more people to try out their games. They get it exposed to more people than those already into MMOs and downloading game clients. For those that do not want to spend long time on downloading the client they can also buy a disk with it for a small fee.

And with more shelf space it might also draw more attention to their games as a whole. With these boxes added to the regular boxes the NCSoft section was close to the Blizzard section in size in the store.

The Wolf Has Ascended. Or so I think anyway, having completed the trials in the Crystal Desert and defeated myself. My ranger has been on his path to become ar Real Hero together with his gang (M.O.X., Dunkoro and Sousuke) and some added henchmen.

[caption id="attachment_483" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Augury Rock entrance area"][/caption]

The hero stuff has required Wolf to Ascend, which takes place in Augury Rock; a big cliff in the Crystal Desert area. In order to gain entrance one has to complete three trials, each trial given by a ghost hero guarding the entrance.

The first trial Wolf attempted was in the Dunes of Despair. In this area Mr Ghost wanted some help with overthrowing an evil Ghost who had placed himself in a place of power. To his aid to defend the place he has a bunch of The Forgotten, which seems to be a race of snake-like (cobra style) people, combined with some animated armor and weapons fighting by their side.

And to add some extra spice, Mr Evil Ghost had some big Sand Wurms placed at strategic locations to hurl big chunks of rock at any nearby enemies.

It turned out that fighting the way to Mr Evil Ghost and even defeating him was not the big problem; that worked fine directly. No, after that our own ghost wanted some peace for a ritual. However, there might still be some enemies around, so he said that the gang should cover his butt for 10 minutes.

This turned out to be easier said than done. Defeating the first few waves of enemies (Forgotten) worked fine, but then a Sand Wurm appeared some distance away and started hurling rocks. Initially I decided to stay near the ghost in case any more enemies would appear. None appeared though, so after a while I decided to take a shot at the Wurm. But, while the team was fighting the wurm some new Forgotten appeared and attacked Mr Ghost! Rushing back to defend him, it was a bit too late and the mission failed.

Next round the gang stayed close to Mr Ghost and ignored the wurm. The following spawn was dealt with ok, but then new spawns appeared with a boss and also another wurm appeared in the other side of the area and also started hurling rocks and then a third... The combination of the three wurms and the boss group was a bit too much and the team was defeated.

Third attempt, the gang rushed to kill the first wurm as soon as the first spawns were dealt with, then back to the ghost. After that the new spawns and the boss group appeared and with one less wurm to deal with, this worked out much easier. After that the second and third wurm was dispatched. Back to Mr Ghost. Now there was not much time left, but there were a few mobs just hanging around nearby. After some waiting time the gang decided to attack them, which was close to the time limit and the mission was successful before the last enemy group was killed. Yay!

Next trial the team attempted was in Elona Reach. This area had some minotaurs and smaller worms in the ground, plus some plant life that acted as some kind of mines when approached. Another Mr Ghost and another task. In this case, Mr Ghost's people had a set of three Vision Crystals, which if combined in a ritual would help with the ascension. However due to greed and mistrust, each crystal had been guarded by a faction and internal fighting had ensued. The task in this case was to obtain the three crystals and give them to the Ghost so he could complete the ritual.

The first crystal the team obtained directly from a friendly ghost, only obstacle was to get it to Mr Ghost, but that was dealt with pretty easily. Now the harder part started. Again with a time limit (30 minutes), the remaining two crystals needed to be found.

In the first time I wasted a lot of the time actually looking in the wrong area (the area where I had been) and only after a while realized that I should go past the ritual area. The area was occupied by a number of groups of Forgotten, including a number of groups with bosses in them. Many of the groups moved around, so getting through the surrounds required some planing and pulling, which was easier said than done in some places.

Again I did fail initially and it took some work to scout where the crystals were and plan how to deal with the enemy groups. As a bonus one could also raise 3 ritual priest ghosts. In my successful attempt I raised two out of three ghosts and I had a 3-4 minutes to spare when completed. I am not sure I would have had time to find the and raise the third one.

The third trial was in an area called the Thirsty River. In this area there was trial to defeat 6 teams of Forgotten. Each team seemed to consist of 2 groups of 3 regular enemies, one boss and one enemy priest. In this trial the enemy priest would resurrect all fallen members of his team every two minutes unless he had been defeated. The priest was in a protected area together with the boss and typically the other members of the team nearby or in front as well.

The first area had one team, the following area had two teams and the final and third area had three teams to defeat. A zerg rush towards the priest worked in the first area, but failed later - all enemies beating on you while trying to take out the priest was a bit too much. Taking out some of the regular enemies and then attacking the priest worked better though and was possible to complete within a two minute time frame, leaving the boss to deal with after the priest was gone. The areas with two or three teams was not much harder, just required a bit of planning and pulling so that only one team was dealt with at any given time. And not start attacking a new team until a two minute time limit had just been passed...

So this challenge was dealt with as well and Mr Ghost (the third) was happy.

[caption id="attachment_484" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Inside Augury Rock"][/caption]

So time to get ascended! This was however not that easy. While getting into the rock area worked fine (with spectacular rock-breaking-up-and-falling-down effects), the problem then came inside.
This time Wolf had to fight all by himself and had to meet... The Doppelganger...

Mr D essentially was a copy of Wolf himself with all the same skills etc. And the task was to defeat him. This turned out to be a bit tricky. There was a bonus if the Doppelganger could be defeated within 10 minutes. In the scope of Guild Wars fights, 10 minutes is an eternity. But the first attempt took about 12-13 minutes, then the Doppelganger defeated Wolf...

So time to pick a few other skills. New selection of skills, with a few different debuff and buff options. This time I learned the hard way that it might be good to do some buffing and preparation before going in and Doppelganger took out Wolf substantially faster this time.

The Doppelganger has all the same skills and probably similar attributes/stats also; being computer controlled he also has instant reaction time, faster than I can react.

But computer controlled enemies typically has a disadvantage towards humans when it comes to judge the current situation and know which skills not to use. So the next plan was to equip new skills which were beneficial skills, but would not be that useful for the particular situation. Rangers have some skills to summon spirits; they provide benefits but these benefit everyone - both allies and enemies. And they to take some time to summon. I also equipped a touch skill (requires close range) and some regular ranged skills and buffs. Then I buffed myself just before entering Augury Rock.

The difference was like night and day. The Doppelganger started to summon spirits while Wolf started shooting and Doppel was almost dead by the time he started fighting himself. A few more seconds and DoppelGanger was dead. The whole thing took perhaps 30-40 seconds.

And now Wolf Ascended! The ascension part was nothing spectacular after all the trials - very much a case of that it is not the goal but the path to the goal that is important.

I quite enjoyed these trials and it certainly feels like an accomplishment to have completed them. This is an aspect of Guild Wars I enjoy. It is not just doing another quest and killing some regular enemies, but challenges where you may fail initially, then adapt and after a while you will succeed. And success does not just come from getting to a higher level or getting a larger group of allies, but rather do things in a different way.
