Anul acesta apare Ghost Rock care imi da peste cap toate ideile despre cum ar trebui sa fie un album de afro-beat/funk. O mare calitate e ca iti aminteste de foarte multe lucruri, de la art-rock la jazz, dar nu poti sa pui degetul pe ceva pentru ca n-ar mai fi Numo, formatia pe care o stiai. Dupa cum declara si unul dintre membrii formatiei: NU suna de parca ar fi fost inregistrat in Nigeria, undeva in anii 70. E o reflectare a emotiilor lor, fuzionate in jazz, funk, electro si tatal lor, afro-beat-ul.

Deci, Ghost Rock (2008), un album de 5 stele al unui grup american (sunt vreo 10-11, majoritatea formati la Universitatea de Jazz din Michigan), care ajunge la un nivel epic pentru genul asta de muzica.

Tonight is another installment of the Asbury Park 45 Sessions. Our special guest of course is the Devil Dick. We'll all be serving up some fresh, funky, and of course dusty 45's the whole night. If you're in the area, do stop in. Cheers. Keep Diggin'!

The classic punk bands for example remain relevent. There is always someone who wants to stick it to whatever 'man' is in power, and for them, the music rings as true today as when influential bands like The Clash, Dead Kennedys, The Stooges and The Sex Pistols came to prominence.

Metal is metal is metal is metal. A kick ass riff or mind numbing ear bleedingly great guitar solo is always awesome - wether is was wailed out by Deep Purple or Motorhead back in the day or by Lamb of God or Killswitch Engage last week.

Funk, Soul, Motown and the great girl groups from the 60's and 70's are always idolised by those who perform under the Urban and R&B banners today. Idolised - and rarely matched. By the way, don't get me started on R&B (if its not BB King or Muddy Waters singing about how his girl and his dog up and left him for another man - it aint R&B)!!

Great music is always great. Their albums sell consistently. Pop music inflates like bubblegum, getting bigger and bigger before bursting with a 'pop,' never to be big again. Pop is interchangable and produces more one hit wonders than any other genre. No I will not provide evidence - the fact that I can barely remember the rubbish Im attempting to attack is evidence enough that pop is pretty forgettable.

All you have to do is go into your friendly neighbourhood record store and look for 25th anniversary or even 10th anniversary editions of classic albums. Not greatest hits mind you - any idiot can put out a greatest hits compilation after two albums. Anniversary editions of albums, to me, suggest that the music contained therein is as relevent and wonderful today as it was when it was released. 
Michael Jackson, Weezer, NWA, Jeff Buckley, Dead Kennedys, Meatloaf and many more. The music has endured. It may not be your exact cup of tea - but you gotta respect its longevity.

Ophir "Kutiman" Kutiel is a 25 year old musician, composer and producer from Tel Aviv. He plays drums, keyboards, guitar and bass , among others and we strongly believe that he will leave his mark in 2007 and beyond.

His music draws influences from afro-beat, psychedelic rock, funk and reggae but in different way than most disciples of Fela and Mr.Brown have done before him. Clever heads may even spot some Special AKA, Chocolate Watchband or the pre-historic drum-machine Sly Stone introduced on "There's A Riot Goin' On" on Kutiman's self-titled first album. But being clever is the last thing Kuti tries to be with his music.

Bon promis c'est le dernier qui parle de musique pour le moment, après je passe à autre chose (j'attends que la période estivale avance un peu pour faire un petit point transferts footbalistiques, là c'est pas trop le moment, à quoi bon faire un article qui sera obsolète la semaine prochaine ?), je vais me consacrer autant que faire se peut (la classe quand même de placer ça dans une phrase) à la finalisation de cet article qui se voudra complet, donc necessairement long étant donné la masse d'informations que je compte te proposer ici. Etant donné que ce paragraphe constitue en quelque sorte l'introduction, va falloir que je te fasse un petit plan plus ou moins detaillé de ce qui va suivre. En gros, je vais chercher à t'exposer un peu tous les styles musicaux qui font le bonheur de mes oreilles, les courants musicaux, artistes, groupes, albums j'en passe, qui vibrottent dans mon Samsung le matin dans le metro 14, qui part de la Gare Saint-Lazarre et qui va à la Bilbliothèque François Mitterand (j'avoue c'était plus la classe quand je prenais le metro pour aller de Piazza De Ferrari à l'Universita' di Economia Aziendale, mais bon je ne desespère pas de le refaire dans un avenir qui se voudra le plus proche possible s'il vous plait).

Pour plus de clarté, que ce soit de ton côté, toi qui lis, ou du mien, moi qui écris, je vais te diviser ça en parties, un peu comme dans un cours d'Histoire-Géo (avec, au choix : 1.Mr Esquevin, pour ceux qui ont oublié leur sac de sport pendant 40 minutes au gymnase ; 2. Mme Meyer, si jamais t'as envie d'entendre parler des pingouins de NewYork ou de l'arnaque des actions en bourse de la compagnie de chemins de fer d'ex-Urss). Et histoire que je commence pas à partir dans des élucubrations dignes de moi même, je vais commencer de suite, parce qu'ensuite je vais te poser un article tellement long que personne ne va oser le lire (d'un autre côté, c'est peut-être pas si mal, ça évitera que tout le monde se rende compte du non-sens de mes phrases).

1. La Funk

Que nous dit l'ami Wikipédia ? « Le funk est une forme de musique afro-américaine apparue à la fin des années 1960, et qui s'est développée au cours des années 1970 et 1980. » ... Heu ok merci Wiki, toujours aussi précis et efficace. On va se la faire autrement, pense Funk dans ta tête, qu'est ce qui surgit dans ton cerveau pollué ? Voilà, toutes les couleurs que tu vois, c'est ça la Funk. C'est de la musique, mais en couleurs. Et en couleurs fluos et flashy la plupart du temps. Ok ils sont moches avec leurs costumes façon Power Rangers en aluminium et leurs coupes façon Miss Fine après un brushing, mais frère qu'est ce que c'est bon !! Petit tour d'horizon de mes principales references funky, liste non-exhaustive, loin de là (bien sûr il n'y aura pas que de la Funk pure, t'auras aussi tout ce qui est derivé, ça peut aller du Jazz à la Soul en passant par la Pop) :

• Delegation : Pour moi, peut-être le tout meilleur groupe de Funk, en tout cas celui que j'ai le plus ecouté au cours des vingt premières années de ma vie (pu... déjà !!). C'est certes de la funk on ne peut plus commerciale, mais quel est vraiment le but de la Funk, si ce n'est te faire danser ? Delegation, c'est surtout LE morceau qui m'a traumatisé, et s'il ne devait en rester qu'un, ce serait certainement celui-là ... You and I. Deux morceaux à écouter pour te faire plaisir, vas-y c'est gratuit (ce qui fera plaisir à Miss Fine) :

• Zapp : Là on parle carrément des Mozart et Bach de la Funk ... Zapp, et son leader Roger Troutman, je crois que c'est c'est le plus grand nombre de classiques produits par une seule et même entité. Computer Love, Dance Floor, I heard it through the Grapevine ... écoute le son que je te pose juste dessous (ne serait-ce que pour la gueule mythique de Roger) et dis-moi si ça te rappelle (ne serait-ce que vaguement) quelque chose :D

  California Love :

• Midnight Star : Un groupe qui est arrivé un peu tard sur la scène Funk (début des années 80), mais qui a tout de même jouit d'une carrière assez longue, j'ai du mal à accrocher sur pas mal de morceaux, mais y'a quand même du très très bon comme par exemple le mythique No Parking on the Dance Floor :

• Imagination : Les Rois de la Funk, eux aussi quelques gros classiques à leur actif, je crois que le morceau que je te pose là tu le connais déjà par coeur, mais pourquoi s'en priver ?  Illusion : Music and Light :

• George Clinton : Le mec qui a juste inspiré 100% des morceaux de Snoop Dogg, c'est presque plus Jazzy que Funky, là c'est pareil si t'écoutes et que tu reconnais pas, y'a vraiment un souci. Atomic Dog (une pensée à notre ami Snoop) : We Want The Funk :

Really, really good music. I saw somebody taping up near the stage, so I hope we can download the show someplace soon. I don't even know what else to say except this was really, really great music. Funky fantastic jams. I'm thinking about going again tonight. Not sure that will be possible though.

In other news, Trombone Shorty didn't really bring it last night. He was alright, though. Maybe it was my expectations. I was hoping for more than we got at Stern Grove. I don't know.

Also, New Rule: I will not try to tape at small bars or clubs anymore, until I am taping in the open and can raise my mics above the crowd (might never happen). There is no point to trying to do it any other way. Plus, I don't enjoy the show as much when I'm trying to tape in those kinds of places because I get frustrated by the crowd. When that happens my priorities are out of wack. So forget it. I'll just save myself the stress of things I can't control and just have fun at the show. "BE THERE" is my new motto. (Actually that's my old motto. I'm just bringing it back.)

Nigeria special. Modern highlife, afro-sounds & Nigerian blues 1970-6 (ML8131), Nigeria disco funk special. The sound of the underground Lagos dancefloor 1974-79 (ML8132) et Nigeria rock special. Psychedelic afro-rock & fuzz funk in 1970s Nigeria (ML8133) sont trois compilations du label Soundway qui avait déjà sorti d'excellents disques sur la Colombie, le Panama ou le Ghana. Rencontre entre les styles locaux et les influences rock et funk internationales. Très beau travail de collectage et de restauration de vinyles, présentant des morceaux inédits.

Nigeria 70 - Lagos jump. Original heavyweight afrobeat highlife & afro-funk (ML8134) édité sur le label Strut (un premier volume comprenait 3 cd) s'intéresse à différents styles existant au Nigéria à côté de l'afrobeat de Fela Kuti. Entre jazz, afro-funk et juju, les rythmes se mélangent et les styles fusionnent.

Et pour terminer, le meilleur de la série d'après moi, bien qu'ils soient tous excellents: African Scream Contest. Raw and psychédélic afro sounds from Benin and Togo 70s (MK4111) (le 3e cd de la série Analog Africa, du label du même nom) s'intéresse aux artistes méconnus de pays peu connus: le Bénin et le Togo, pendant les années 70. Samy Ben Redjeb, le propriétaire du label, est arrivé à Cotonou en 2005 pour chercher des disques, et il en a trouvé ! Dès les premiers jours, il envoyait chez lui 3500 vinyles qu'il avait pu acheter à un de ses contacts. Par la suite, il retournera plusieurs fois au Bénin pour retrouver les artistes et les interviewer. Le livret, parsemé de magnifiques photos d'époque relate tout cela. La musique quant à elle est extraordinaire, mêlant rythmes vaudou à la soul de James Brown avec guitares hurlantes et chants inspirés, de El Rego et ses Commandos, Vincent Ahehehinnou ou l'Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou.
