Today’s St. Paul Pioneer Press addressed the ongoing issue of companies who block their employ

Today's St. Paul Pioneer Press addressed the ongoing issue of companies who block their employees from accessing their social network Web sites, i.e. Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn.

It's not a new phenomenon. But is the blocking effort actually picking up steam?

Julie Forster's article cites a survey by the consulting firm Challenger Gray and Christmas who says 22% of companies in the U.S. currently block access to these sites. Nearly one in three employers consider visits to these sites to be a drag on productivity.

The biggest reason for blocking access is if a company feels there's no business value to having their employees even spend one second on them. But an all day block? What about on the lunch hour?

Shouldn't companies at least spend some time monitoring employee Web habits before pulling the plug? If one of your workers constantly goes back to the Web every hour to check a newspaper site for the latest news, should that site be blocked too?

PR and social media guru Shel Holtz (who does one of my favorite podcasts by the way, with Neville Hobson) has been after the blockers for quite some time.

His StopBlocking.org says it all. He's also a big critic of any study that says social networking sites have been a drag on productivity in the office.

Holtz says "...the studies are a load of crap. Not taken into account is the fact that a lot of the time spent on these sites does have a work-related dimension to it. Also not taken into account is the fact that workers put extra time to make up for the time spent online, regardless of whether that time is spent at the office or at home."

I'm sort of on the fence on some aspects of this. I've always felt that my time at the office is not my time. It's not about surfing the net, buying tickets to an upcoming concert, reading blogs that have nothing to do with the reason I'm at work. But blocking Web or social networking access isn't the answer to any alleged lost productivity.

Sure, social networking sites can be abused. But how about managing your employees? Communicate your expectations. Deal with the idiots and leave the productive people alone.

Also, the talented 20-somethings who are moving into today's corporate offices, who many companies desperately need to fill the cubicles, just plain expect social networking to be available in the same way they expect a competitive benefits package. It's how they communicate. They'll take their talent and go work for someone else.

No matter what your age, would you accept in a job in a corporate setting that didn't allow you access to the Internet in general? It's unheard of.

Remember when companies said they'd never use e-mail in their offices?

Nothing says "We don't trust you" to an employee better than blocking them from anything deemed inappropriate by management, on the Web.

What are the business prospects for iPhone applications compared to Facebook apps? There are some interesting comparisons to be made between the two on the types of apps, the revenue models, and virality.

"Useful" vs. Fun Apps

Web services seem to be polarizing between utilities and entertainment, as Alex Iskold notes. Both Facebook and iPhone are popular for games, but the iPhone has many more business/productivity apps. While Facebook has a few "useful" apps, comparing it to the iPhone platform clarifies for me why it will be hard to make it a place for useful apps. Unlike the iPhone platform, it was never designed for serious activity, it was built for communication, flirting and staying in touch. (Here are 10 useful Facebook apps.) The iPhone, like any smart phone or computer, is designed for productivity, in addition to entertainment. This is no judgement on fun vs. useful apps. But because of this, the iPhone will have more options for a range of applications than Facebook.

Who's Willing to Pay?

While the prices of iPhone apps are still in flux and the prices did seem high early on, it appears that free apps are decreasing in proportion and paid apps are increasing, according to Pinch Media. The common price point may end up forming around the 99 cent and $9.99.

People are clearly more willing to pay for apps on the iPhone than they are on Facebook. If you pay $200 to $600 for a phone, whats $5 or $10 more? The willingness to pay is a function of the platform. It's a higher end, higher price point market, which means in theory it will attract more developers. Social games for Facebook generate say $0.50 or $1 CPM compared to an app for the iPhone that could cost $10 to purchase, though granted the $10 game would require much more work to build. If Facebook's payment system or some undetermined new ad system proves a success, that could change things.

Advertising: Social-ness vs. Location-ness

Right now, advertising on social networks like Facebook is still a crapshoot for the most part. The best prospects are for social-related ads, which take advantage of the social graph on the site. Mobile ads are also still in the early stages of development. But they do offer one thing that ads on Facebook do not: location. Serving specific contextual or behavioral ads based on where someone is located would provide interesting options that PC-based social networks do not.

Virality: Friends, Friends, Friends

Facebook wins on virality, even with changes to its platform that have made gaining users not quite as easy. The downside for iPhone apps at least right now is there is not the kind of viral growth magic that you get on Facebook. This could change if and when developers come up with social networking apps that take advantage of the iPhone's specific benefits, such as location and touch screen.

Fred Wilson (who inspired this post) raises a related question: does being first on the iPhone matter as much as it did on Facebook? In other words will there be so much virality that those that get in first like Loopt, Yelp and Twitterific take leading positions that others will have a hard time challenging? I think because iPhone's virality is not as powerful as Facebook's later apps will still have a good opportunity on the iPhone.

The past few months haven't been heavy sports seasons (let's face it, no one likes Baseball) for our users, so we've focused on gearing up with new changes/features on our existing games for the upcoming seasons.

Today we launched a new re-design of the most popular football (Soccer) game on Facebook: Fantasy Football.

It felt like we had created a new baby. It was magical. It had a lot of work put into it behind the scenes. It was magical. I'm in love with it. I finally felt a feeling I hadn't felt in a long time: the rush and thrill of launching a new product. I remember last summer when I first started Sport Interactiva, I would sit around and just hit refresh on my user counts and my invitation counts. It was crazy watching my applications double in hours.

Today David and I sat around watching as new users rolled in and invites started flying out and users started generating leagues to compete with their friends in. We watched as we sent out e-mails to hundreds of thousands of people across the world to let them know that their favorite game was back and better than ever.

Damn it feels beautiful.

I couldn't stop laughing when I read this post. I was on Facebook Mask Chat, where people post questions anonymously and other members respond with their opinions. The question of the month is whether or not it is wrong to masturbate. Below is an excerpt; my pseudonym in this chat is "Darth Vader." The misspellings are intentionally preserved for my amusement.

Swift Bird

well see there was this guy called JESUS! who happened to be Mary the VIRGIN's son. he told people the word and people like you are the reason he died. but it is okay because it was for me and all the other one's who love GOD! see people pass the stories down forever just like anything else that happened in history and no one questions that. well whatever believe what you want to believe

Ireland

OMG Swift Bird...you need to get a grip.

1st of all....most of the testaments in the Bible have been passed on from generation to generation, and the actual testaments were written in languages, that even today, cannot be fully translated to effect the WORD. And as such, have been LOOSELY, and according to a lot of modern day Theologians, very Loosely translated into the works that we refer to as the Bible.

2nd of all...I believe that your family must be the kinda folk, that take "religion" back to the Pilgrims, and would like to take all of us back to the hell and brimstone kinda age.

The subject, masturbation, has absolutely, and I don't care, what your Grand-Daddy told you, your Pappy told you, or anyone else told you, there is nothing wrong with Masturbation, nor is the subject approached in the Bible.

And by the way, you old follower of the Bible...did you know that Jesus our Saviour was the Lover, and I mean get down and dirty Lover, of Mary Magdeline...a known WHORE. The reason, was because Jesus too was only human. In fact, if you know your bible so well, the procreated. I know that's a big word, but, that means that Christ had children.

Get a grip, and grab some literature outside of the old black family Bible and learn about Christ our Saviour - the man and Son of God

Most of what I have just told you is IN the BIBLE. There is nothing of what you say about masturbation being UNPURE or anything else in the Bible. Do some research and learn about Christ the Man beyond what your kin fold be a tellin ya.

By the way, have you actually really READ the Bible? If not, I suggest you put IT on your booklist.

Grow up.

Darth Vader (you) replied 5 secs ago

Dude, you were kind of going somewhere with your argument until you said Jesus was Mary Magdalene's lover. That just puts you in the same boat with the people you are arguing against...

No, wait, actually, it puts you in the stormy, shark-infested waters (excuse my atrocious cliché) near the boat. You are using hearsay, something that's never been written down (except in The DaVinci Code, which I hope you are aware is a work of loosely-based, poorly-conceived historical fiction), while your opponents are using something that is well-documented and has a great deal of integrity despite its many years of generational transfer.

I like how Ireland capitalized "Masturbation," called Swift Bird, in essence, a backward Pilgrim, and then used "UNPURE"---in all caps!---instead of "impure." It's amusing watching people try to intimidate each other with such messy slaps and jabs. I also loved Swift Bird's opinion that "people like you are the reason [Jesus] died." I can see the Gospel is really going places with this guy.

So, I haven't posted in a while. I know that my record to date has been sporadic at best, unlike my favorite bloggers, Bun in the Oven and Mrs. Flinger. My old excuse(s):
- No time. I have two kids, ya know? (oh. right. so do my two favorite bloggers) Strike that excuse.
- Nothing interesting to say. Today I woke up, went to work, came home, cooked dinner, bathed children, put children to bed, went to sleep. Repeat. (Forgot to add: said good morning, bye, hello, goodnight to husband)

But NOW, I have another excuse. I am not...and I repeat NOT a video game kind of girl. I don't like MySpace. I'm not into SecondLife, though I do have an avatar. She's floating around lost somewhere in a Brazilian lounge. Then my older sister Meri tells me about Facebook. And now I am so hooked! I love playing Scramble. I've recently become addicted to Gangster Battle. So now, instead of using the nanoseconds of free time I have writing and posting, I spend them on Facebook.

See you there.

Facebook is a genius’ invention for back door communication. Rather than asking a person what is going on in their life, you can:

Read their wall, and see what others are saying to them, who the others are, and where they are from.

Refresh (F5) Facebook home page (when you’re logged in) constantly in order to track any comments, picture posting, poking that occupies your friends. Oh – one of the best items on this is relationship status. Apparently everyone feels obligated to confess on Facebook exactly how they stand with regards to a boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse. I believe the options are “single,” “it’s complicated,” “in a relationship,” and “married.” If your status changes, Facebook is smart enough to tell all your friends, with a broken heart image if you go from being “in a relationship” to “single.” If their significant other is/was on Facebook, Facebook even supplies their name. Of course there is hacking, and teasing, and the disappointment when you think a close friend has started a relationship without telling you.

Comment on a photo in which they are tagged. This is very indirect, if you wish. Only those tagged in the photo will be notified, and get the message. Incidentally, if a random friend has something funny, complimentary, or unflattering to say about a photo of you, Facebook will keep you informed.

Become friends with their good friends, and observe all their comments on walls and photos.

Send them a friend suggestion. Anyone an enterprising matchmaker?

More direct modes of communication via Facebook are:

Writing on their wall. I like the public nature of this, so that your conversation is monitored and kept necessarily to the topics and style that can be public.

Sending a message. For the friends who never got around to giving you their email for one reason or another, you can look them up on Facebook and send them a message. I believe you can send a message on Facebook whether the person is officially your “friend” or not.

Using their contact information listed on their profile to email, IM, or call them.

Write a note and tag them in it. Unlike tagging pictures, in my experience tagging is an invitation to read your note.

Poke them. In this form of communication, your intentions and specific meaning are ambiguous. Observe their reaction to determine their interpretation, which reveals how they think of you and what they want to think of you.

Tag them in a photo. At least this will let them know that 1) you thought of them, 2) you know their name, and 3) you thought their picture worthy of a place in your Facebook photo albums which are generally public, even to people (if there are such) not on Facebook.

Some things to keep in mind:

If you change your status on Facebook, everyone can read it.

If you post to someone’s wall regarding their status, the wall stays and the status goes away.

Applications (Superpoke, movie compatibility, bumper stickers, etc.) will almost always ask you to invite all of your friends, and even have every option imaginable selected as default. Take the time to “unselect” the options you don’t want. Pay attention to which options are mandatory.

When editing your profile, if you leave a field blank, it will not appear on your profile. So you can leave blank your politics or religion if you don’t want to get into it.

If you care about security, you’ll probably decline displaying your full birth date or address. If you’re paranoid you won’t have any profile picture; you’ll use an assumed name, and you’ll only add friends as “limited profile.” Either way, be careful that you don’t give the same information away on Facebook by writing on someone’s wall or commenting on a photo. Friends may even tag you in photos using your real name. Forgive them. It is hard to remember.

Get your parents on. It should up your friend count and makes them look cooler, which definitely helps your reputation. If they never log on, does it really matter?

If you are a parent, make your kids add you on Facebook (and Myspace) – and make sure they don’t have an alter-ego they’re really using. Show up every once in a while and comment. Don’t say anything embarrassing. Try something funny like, “Dinner’s ready.” After all, we’re always looking for ways to improve inter-family communication.

If you are a spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend, especially one officially recognized (by being posted on Facebook), drop by each others’ walls from time to time. Don’t get mushy. Share a link or comment on a photo. Be a part of each others’ lives, even on Facebook. After all, do you want the stalkers to get the wrong impression?

Do not spend money on Facebook. Seriously. It’s the thought that counts. Write something on a friend’s wall, or post a funny picture of them. Draw them a picture using paint, and post it. But do something free and thoughtful to show you care.

Am I the only person who can’t handle the surge of envy when they read those applications like “top friends” or “voted best friend for advice,” etc.? All because I’m too cool to add those applications and wasn’t an option, so obviously my friends didn’t vote for me? Relax. Be realistic. It’s just Facebook.

I’m not as paranoid as the hypothetical person I described above, but I think it’s a good idea if a log out button exists, to use it. Amazon.com doesn’t have one, and every time I am on that website it knows my name. Cookies.

Be aware that Facebook has a million options for privacy settings, so some people are less present and visible on Facebook. Deal with it or ask them to change. (I suggested to one such friend that I could cure her fear of stalkers by writing a blog all about her with her name and phone numbers and pictures - but I won't.)

Select the options for email notification. Email is my catch-all notification box, and I don’t have to type in any passwords to retrieve it on my home computer. I have Outlook Express set up to sort my emails the way I want, so whenever something important happens to my profile on Facebook, I find out. (I also get blog comment moderation notices). So if you’re worried about getting addicted to Facebook, decide only to get on when you get a notification via email. Do not live on Facebook - or Myspace, Blogger, or Wordpress for that matter.

Facebook is a site for social networking. The more obvious modes of communication are the harder to use on Facebook. Is there a reason for this? Maybe. Never underestimate the power or omnipresence of links. Remember that people can read what you do. Be yourself on Facebook, but be more yourself in real life.

TechCrunch wrote a post the other day on "The Future of Search," which includes a video walk-through of some of the search features with which Google is apparently experimenting. The highlight of this "experiment" is a layer of social functionality (much like Digg) that Google may add to its standard page of search results.

Basically, this world of search allows users to vote search results up and down, move things to the first page, and comment on individual results. What this means is that Google may be turning to "the wisdom of crowds" to enhance it's world-famous (but ever-mysterious) algorithm. What's more, it appears that users will be able to create rich Google profiles (Facebook, anyone?), which will be visible to other Google users through comments made on specific search results. Could this all be part of Google's master plan to take over the internet? We already know they're getting into virtual worlds. Keep an eye out for new experimental features in Google's ever-active Labs.

To see a very, very cool demo of this functionality, be sure to visit TechCrunch.

Unlike its competitor, Myspace, Facebook has earned a great reputation for performance, scalability, and uptime. Today, it seems the system is temporarily down causing many of my coworkers to comment on the rarity of such a platform crash for Facebook.
So this is pretty creepy/funny. Nowhere on David Berkowitz's Facebook profile does it say he's Jewish and yet the above "Hey Jew," ad popped up on his screen. Being understandably taken aback and curious about how the hell the ad knew his religion, he contacted , Katan Adventures who told him:

“In order to reach Jews who haven’t listed their religion on Facebook (which, by the way, is the vast majority) we run ads in metro areas with large Jewish populations and try to grab their attention with ridiculous lines such as ‘hey jew’ but we obviously get a lot of wasted clicks with this strategy as well. And some angry emails.”

So I guess if you get an ad that's like "Hey Chinese Guy," or "Hey Black Lady," you shouldn't take offense/be worried. Also, can we just note that the ad says, "Shlep." How jewish of them. Ha ha (It's Friday evening, I'm delirous). Oy!

Is Facebook's popularity dipping?

Toronto is the Facebook capital of the world. We love it. From those of us who'll post pictures of anything that comes to mind to those of us who update our status several times a day. We know it's silly and for most of us it's a complete waste of time. Simon Dumenco tells us that even Bill Gates has quit using Facebook after having a daily half-hour habit. He was being bombarded with roughy 8,000 friend requests each day. And yes, it is quite silly, as Dumenco explains:

But Facebook's ick factor in the executive suite might have as much to do with its shiny, happy world of "friendship" as with security. "There's almost an inverse relationship between seriousness and how much you participate in social networking," says ReputationDefender's Fertik, laughing. That basically nails it: Facebook is simply unserious—particularly given how it prompts hard-driving business executives to regress into adolescent vernacular. "Poking" people, requesting "friends," writing on someone’s "wall": It’s cute when you're in high school or college. But in a corporate environment, it sounds disingenuous and downright silly.

I personally detest the proliferation of ridiculous applications (and especially hate being tested on my movie knowledge!) but now and then a good *poke is a bit of fun :)

Two weeks after Joshua Lipton was charged in a drunken driving crash that seriously injured a woman, the 20-year-old college junior attended a Halloween party dressed as a prisoner. Pictures from the party showed him in a black-and-white striped shirt and an orange jumpsuit labeled "Jail Bird."

In the age of the Internet, it might not be hard to guess what happened to those pictures: Someone posted them on the social networking site Facebook. And that offered remarkable evidence for Jay Sullivan, the prosecutor handling Lipton's drunken-driving case.
Growing up in North Braddock exposed me to r&b music that would not have happened had we stayed

Growing up in North Braddock exposed me to r&b music that would not have happened had we stayed in the predominantly white Mount Pleasant. My older sister, Diane, and younger brother, Dan, embraced this music more quickly than I did. But it did not take long for me to prefer the quartet sounds of the Temptations, Four Tops, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Impressions, Supremes, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas and Gladys Knight & the Pips over the Fab Four or other British rock sounds. As I see it, the struggles of the white working-class found expression in the music of a people from a greater struggle. And the roots of this music goes back to the spirituals and field songs of the slaves. As the migration north began to Chicago, Kansas City, St. Louis, Detroit, Pittsburgh, etc.., it morphed into blues and jazz. The groans and grittiness of Blind Willie Johnson captures the early transformation from spirituals and field songs to the beginning of the blues/jazz/gospel sound. It reminds me of a new testament scripture in Romans 8:26 that says “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.”

As a white kid, growing up somewhat poor in a working-class neighborhood, I gradually resonated with the music. It captured for me the grittiness of my life, my family’s life. As we watched our father become an alcoholic with violent rages, music comforted us in ways that nothing else could. And our family was embedded in this larger community where life was hard. There were no guarantees that things would ever get easier, in the family or out. So, music was more than the proverbial soundtrack everyone seems to reference these days. It was a healthy outlet. The struggle might find tearful expression of the love ballads or a song with social commentary like the Temptations “Poppa Was a Rolling Stone.” Our mom, would prance around our house dancing to Aretha Franklin’s “Respect.” In some of their good moments, my 6’5” father would slow dance with my 5’2” mom to the Platters. What a sight that was! I think my grandfather referred to a comic strip that encapsulated the size differential. Grandpap would say about my parents when we arrived to visit, “Well, there’s Mutt & Jeff.”

Along with this music was the music of the church. The music of the pentecostal and sanctified churches became rock n’ roll. It’s fascinating to watch people’s disdain for the emotionalism of the “holy rollers,” but embrace the soulfulness of a Janis Joplin. Most people are totally ignorant of the connection of the early rock & roll sound of Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and even Elvis to the exhuberant and expressive music from the community churches. This bias against emotional fervor in worship continues.

Thank God for Mrs. Page, our music teacher, in the Jones Avenue middle school and North Braddock Scott high school. She exposed us to many of the spirituals as part of the chorus and choir. When I went away to college, the preference for r&b and gospel remained, but it took another leap when we moved to southern California so I could pursue my doctoral studies. We began attending a little mom & pop church that had a choir and choir director that were unbelievable. Terry Marden and his wife Shelva were music ministers at Crossroads Community Church in Westminster, California. I was a part of the choir on and off for the four years we attended that church (1987-1991). The Mardens did all sorts of gospel genre, but my favorite was black gospel. We actually participated in various competitions throughout southern California. So, we were a multi-ethnic black gospel choir. We had ethnic Romanians who could not speak English that recently immigrated, Asian-Americans, Mexican-Americans, African-Americans and all sorts of whites along the various class and regional strata. We performed in churches at Compton and Watts in Southcentral Los Angeles (now called South Los Angeles) and ended up competing as part of a fundraiser for the Orange County Urban League at the Crystal Cathedral. These performances were not just singing. Symmetrical and asymmetrical choreography was an important part of the worship expression. Gradually, the portion of the choir that had little rhythm began to sway and clap off beat and move as one with those who could. Now of course there were exceptions, you know. There are one or two people in any choir, especially including so many white members that just aren’t going to get it. So, you work around them. The Mardens might move them to a less obvious location in the choir, but they always kept them. We did three songs at the Crystal Cathedral. I'm trying to find the date, but I think it was in 1988. We did renditions of the Walter Hawkins great “When the Battle's Over” with Gigi Fiero doing the solo, “Let Us Not Be Weary in Well Doing” with Keith ???? doing the tenor solo and a finale that included the Douglas Miller “Do Not Pass Me By” with Terry Marden doing his solo. (The links here are the originals. But we sounded just as good!) Unfortunately, Terry passed away several years ago.

It was during this time that I began collecting music of the great gospel choirs and soloists. I actually can remember the moves to some of the songs and hope to find a similar choir to fit into someday. If not, you can bet where you’ll find me in heaven. I’m sure there’ll be high church music from the Episcopalians and Catholics. There’ll be the Protestant hymns of the Methodists. And I may stop and listen and try to sing a few notes in each, but I will not tarry too long before I make my way to the gospel sounds and choreography of the Pentecostals. So, Terry, please make room for me. I’m coming to worship.

Pandora radio is a great place to listen to various gospel choirs and artists. I got the application through Facebook. If you need any suggestions on where to start or expand, feel free to ask. This ol’ dumb white guy knows a thing or two at this point. Thank God for the contribution of African-American culture to our lives! One of my all time favorites is by the Mississippi Mass Choir, "I'm Not Tired Yet."

Now here's a question for everyone? I know I am not the only ol' white guy with this passion. Are these multi-ethnic choirs out there doing black gospel music or was this entirely a unique experience? Thanks for your thoughts in advance.

A small impact security hole in a Facebook design that released the members’ birthdates to the

A small impact security hole in a Facebook design that released the members' birthdates to the public during a test run reminded me how we've entered a different age with the Internet.

I'm surprised by the amount of personal information people leave on these sites. If they're willing to leave personal information on a public web space, how hard would it be for a malicious party to pry more valuable information (bank accounts or from an HR perspective - confidential employer-held information) either through malware or social engineering.

Earlier this week, I covered a study that indicated almost 25% of companies block access to social network sites. I don't think blocking social networking sites like Facebook is really the answer, because it doesn't really get at the problem. Just because you block one avenue doesn't mean an employee won't find another. In the case of social engineering, there may be nothing that you can do to block it. The impact of social engineering can be quite disastrous to companies as illustrated by ChoicePoint in 2005.

I think the real answer revolves around HR and the IT staff to prevent the abuse of social network sites and other "Web 2.0" applications.

Education
The type of trust that people extend to friends that you've known in physical world, perhaps shouldn't be extended to the Net. I see education as the best way to make sure people are aware of the risks and vigilant. In the workplace, this means in addition to general information establishing and educating employees on proper protocols for sharing information with approved parties. Also, as a part of education, I would let them know that you are monitoring communications to protect against data leaks and prevent unauthorized acts. The idea is to remove any perception of big brother by being upfront about your actions.

Network Monitoring
There are two discussions here - internal monitoring and external monitoring. Internally it just makes sense to regularly monitor protocol use as a part of managing performance and bandwidth. It's also good for identifying anything unexpected that might take place on the internal network. I'm assuming that internal security measures such as IDS, IPS, firewalls, and appropriate network access controls are in place.

External Network Security
There was a good article on the dangers of Web 2.0 applications that's worth mentioning. A survey from the Forrester Group, commissioned by Secure Computing, found that, "while 96 percent of respondents reported finding value from the use of Web 2.0 applications, only 5 percent actually implemented comprehensive protection mechanisms."

The article explains that the interaction between the Web 2.0 site vistor and the website has changed significantly over the last two - three years. These changes will impact the ways companies secure their networks.

"The bi-directional interaction that is the essence of Web 2.0 makes it a prime venue for hackers. Web sites such as Wikipedia thrive on people adding content; however, organizations that host these and other social media sites are not policing the content. This has led to what is known as Web-borne malware, a phenomenon that, during the last two years, has been effectively replacing the traditional delivery method for viruses: e-mail attachments. This new way of breaking into systems can catch users off guard."

So it's a matter of make sure that not only are you not accessing a bad site, but detecting that malware doesn't exist on a page of a larger site like Wikipedia. Haven't done extensive checking, but vendors like Secure Computing, Websense, and Barracuda, have filters to detect these threats.

To prevent potential information leaks, you'll want to monitor sensitive data that may be inappropriately accessed or shared. Companies like Symantec (Vontu), Vericept, and Palisade Systems offer Data Loss Prevention (DLP) solutions for monitoring confidential information.

Complementing these security devices, you could use a network recorder (PDF) for security forensics like our GigaStor or others on the market. This allows to replay network events, HR infractions, and network attacks, for investigations and proof of the infraction.
