Santogold (born Santi White) is a songwriter, producer, and singer from Philadelphia who has been active since 2003.
Santogold was lead singer of the Philadelphia-based punk rock/ska band Stiffed, but while in the band, she was offered a solo contract. Working with fellow Stiffed member John Hill as co-producer, she recorded her debut album, Santogold, which was released in April 2008. Santogold’s style has been defined as a mix of dub, electronic, indie rock, new wave, and punk rock.

Deep Dive Corp. was formed in 1999 in Hamburg/Germany. The driving force and featured guitarist of the band is Peter Musebrink, backed up by Björn Gerhard. To this date DDC has released 6 albums. You won't regret it if you check them out. Unfortunately there is almost no official video material to cover this band. The featured video is a live act at Gap club in Klagenfurt, Austria from 2006. I believe the audio track is not in sync with the video material for audio quality reasons (the original audio has been replaced with the actual album track) but it's a compromise I had to make to bring DDC @ D I S C O R G Y.

We remember with a fond nostalgia riding the old red rattlers up to sydney back in the mid to late 80s, so we were keen to check out a namesake - aka another new space in this fine city.

Red rattler is by far our favourite space in the city right now. Stepping through the unassuming exterior, we led to the left and into the main room - an expansive garage-like space, not dissimilar to most.

What stood out was the decor and set-up. It's top notch - stage, curtains, decent PA, lounges, gas heaters - all themed around the colour red.

Not much was doing when we arrived fashionably late (note to selves - arrive a LOT later next time). A DJ spun some tunes early - and although we were kind of getting sick of the slow brake transition between tracks, they did pull out some funky movers like de la's saturday... and nkotb's right stuff.

An acoustic performance followed - quite pleasant, but very political and slightly unnerving with the lyrical content. Not much to celebrate here. More bands were promised but we had other things to see tonight too, and parted ways.

More photos below of course - we'd love to see this space really jackin' to some house or tech beats, but guess we'll have to wait and see.

Yesterday, before I began my trek out of the house to go and see The Dark Knight(review of that coming soon) I was given some music that I was asked to review(album: Suffused With Static). Since I'm always eager to hear new stuff, I accepted it. Once I heard that it was by an unsigned artist(PSY/OPSogist), I was both excited and skeptical about pushing play once it was loaded into my iPod. But, alas, the play button was pushed as I made my journey from home to cinema.

What flew out of my headphones and into my ears was something I wasn't expecting(granted, I should have figured it out by the genre classification applied to it by the creator: Fucking Ill). Of course the Intro of the music kicked in. It was a heavily distorted voice over what sounded like Vinyl minor scratching and a music box from the 1800s playing in the background. As the sound started to build, so did my eyebrow. I wasn't sure where the path of this was going to lead. It was either one of two paths that this was going to go down: 1.) Leading to a pit of despair, 2.) A saying of a single profane word that would come about with every beat shift.

So, when the first actual track kicked in ("Birth, Space And Time"), it sounded like an opening to an industrial rock piece. But, that was just a ploy. A ruse, if you will. He tricked me. It was Hip-Hop . . . which was just what I originally assumed it would be from the Intro. But, it wasn't crappy Hip-Hop, nor was it one filled with lyrical overstatements. It was just the beats talking for him. And, the song had a sense of magic, to me. Sadly, I don't feel magic with much Hip-Hop, today. The last time that happened was in 2005, when I heard the instrumental music of a female producer by the name of Buttafly Plague and her "unreleased" album called Instru-Mental Bliss, Vol. 1. Before that, it was when I heard Danger Mouse's production for the Grey Album(No, Jay-Z wasn't a factor in that. I give all the respects to DM).

So, for me to classify someone in that highly elite category of mine is really something to be in awe over. The second full song, third track, "Between The Keys" only helped to keep the magic alive. The piano riffs and the standing bass inside of the song was just really pushing me to look around as if someone else was able to hear the music, too. You know, to share the experience of hearing something that truly is masterful. It was just something really incredible and thought provoking. My only complaint was that, he didn't switch up the drums. If he would have thrown something in like a drum pattern shift, or even slow down his drums and add distortion to it, it would have been insane.

On the track "TIME (a. Not Just Madness b. Clarity c. Anaethetised)" PSY/OPS flips a soundbite of one of the best movies of 2007: Michael Clayton. The scene where the character Arthur Edens(played by Tom Wilkinson) is talking to Michael about his coming to clarity whilst he was submerged inside of his insanity due to him not taking his medication. I felt that the speech given by the character was not only a giant WTF, but also holding some sort of truth to it all. It was really dynamic. So, for PSY/OPS to add that in there was a giant kudos, from me. But, not only did he do that, but the music creates and constructs around that soundbite and others featured in the song is like if Tyler Bates would forge a production duo with James Lavelle(during the first leg of the act U.N.K.L.E.). It's cinematic, it's moving, and it's heart pumping. It gives you the feeling that, for that particular moment of time, your life is a movie.

PSY/OPS has a good scope of sounds and soundbites. He masterfully adds in pieces of various movies and television shows that adds to the moment of his music and not distract from it like a lot of producers end up doing haphazardly. On "Potent Spirits," he throws his bid in from Early 90's revival Hip-Hop. It's fun, soulful, and intelligent. His samples are done eloquently. Placing the vibing era somewhere between a Good Times episode and an Gangstarr concert. On "Opposing Drives," he brings the type of bass attack that would make Dirty South car enthusiasts climax on themselves when they play this song in their stereo. It isn't a speedy adrenaline pumping sensation, but rather a "2 miles an hour" type of moment.

With "V-SIS", PSY/OPS uses simple mid-90's East Coast drums with a standing bass. The pattern of the standing bass's riff is one very similar to an Oriental style of music. Due to that, it gives off a feeling that you're listening to a "Ghetto Ninja" theme song. The drums, as stated, aren't complicated, nor are they abrasive. They add the right touch with their simplicity. His use of electronic melodies and sounds for the song only heightens the mood, from the eerie ambience at the beginning to the wall of noise in the middle ending with the playful crystal chimes mixed up with a the child hissing and breathing out in a rhythmic fashion. The man is good at what he does.

All in all, I was very impressed with the music from beginning to end. There were a few pieces here and there that I wished he would either punch a little harder, or throw in a more blatant surprise. But, aside from that, the album is very solid. It's a shame that he isn't signed and doesn't have a strong following behind him. He deserves it. I'm not sure of his race, but music isn't racial. Music is a universal thing, regardless of where it originates. Still, I know people will feel the need to pick at it because it's Urban Music(When the hell did Black music become known as Urban?). But, for me, it doesn't matter. As I stated, this is in my elite Hip-Hop category for the first decade of the 2000's right along with Danger Mouse's Grey Album production and Buttafly Plague's Instru-Mental Bliss, Vol. 1. As they say, good things come in a package of 3's. So, this rounds out that Tri-Force, for me. It's witty, playful, smart, and good music. I'd be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't enjoy DJ Shadow, U.N.K.L.E., Hi-Tek, or even Tricky not to enjoy this offering. If you don't enjoy it, you're not connecting to things properly. Plus, the man offers it for free.

E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo). Known to those who play video games as THE place to find out about new games coming out for the next year. The event used to be incredibly hyped up and attended by up to 70,000 people! So why am I yawning while looking over the highlights for this year's E3? Because there are none. A couple of years ago E3 became a private event. So that 70,000 audience? Now it's down to 4,000 or so and the excitement level seems to have followed suite. Sony was its normal arrogant self and claimed to be the leader in video games and innovation with its blue-ray player. Is it just me or does it seem sad that a gaming console's only mentionable feature is the ability to play movies? Also considering the fact that their sales are way behind either Nintendo or Microsoft.....Yeah..... Of course I would normal take Nintendo's side but they weren't much better. Known for it's ability to come up with something different Nintendo fizzled this year with only an attachment (The point of which I still don't get), snowboarding (Kinda cool, but too expensive with the balance board), and a sequel to wii-sports (Which might be ok, but isn't exactly anything new). Why?!?! I was looking forward to the announcment of a new Zelda or Mario game and they give us refinements on past things? Oh I do have to say though, SPORE looks pretty awesome. Unfortunately the full version's only announced for computers. So lastly we come to Microsoft. Yeah, forget that, I just checked and nothing interesting jumped out at me. While I'm not saying that there aren't any good games that were announced this year, I am saying that there simply wasn't anything (Other than Spore) that made me think "Wow! That looks awesome! When does that come out because I really want to play it!" Maybe this is because I was hoping for at least some slight mention of the kingdom hearts series or Stargate Worlds. Seriously, is it that difficult to just give a few details? Yeah, yeah, I know that there is supposed to be a new KH game this year and that Stargate Worlds come out within a year, but still....

Drums and Keytar. Do I really need to say anything else? All right, so Shy Child is two guys from New York City on Keytar and drums making ridiculously fun and catchy songs. It's full of synth lines that just ride the drum-beat into dance rhythms. They simply are so much fun to listen to and, most importantly, I can't really think of any other band that are like them. Their whole album, Noise Won't Stop is worth checking out and definitely worth buying.

They've done a few remixes but definitely check out these two songs, "Astronaut" where the drum beat and the synth parts are just made for each other, and you can't help but start moving and dancing. "Summer" totally encompasses exactly what summer should be about, so if you want a song that spells out summer for you, download it!

Vocal sounds only+live electronic processing by an enchantress of the genre, Norvegian Maja Ratkje. Expect undecipherable utterings, abstract sound treatments, extreme dynamics, and total mastery of up-to-date audio trickeries (real-time sampler, sound effects a go-go and what not). Beauty arises amid chaotic voice samples, from angelic whisperings to grotesque Karius & Baktus impersonations. But let it be said, this is more in concrete music territory than sound poetry or improvisation. As with many young musicians touring Europe nowadays, the level of technicity is impressive, but virtuoso Ratkje has her own agenda and never forgets what makes music unforgettable: to be moving and to be going somewhere. Hats off, Maja!

A short biography:
C9H13NO3 aka Adrenaline by his real name Spurcaciu Liviu, was born at the foot of the mountain in the City of Sinaia, Romania. His first action as a music producer took place during high school when he was writing hip hop rhymes along with his friends, and they rapped on the home-made kitchen pot beats. The only drumandbass related influence at that time consisted of a jungle tape named “Narcotic jungle” which contains songs from artists such as Aphrodite, Dj Zinc, Dope Skillz, Freestylers, Sappo and Jungle Brothers. Later in 2001, during his first year of college, he produced hip hop tunes for his rhymes, but soon in 2002 he discovered some tracks which belonged to artists like Dillinja and Ed Rush, that contained the most perfect combination of sounds he has ever heard, and that made him start producing drum and bass music under the name "Digital Beats". He got into DARKE*ST Kru in 2005, time when he played at his first gig named Substil III made by Tralala events & Darke*st. Later that year he changed his name to "C9H13NO3", which is the chemical formula of the adrenaline. From that time he played next to djs and producers. In 2006 C9H13NO3 had the first release @ Darkland Recordings, followed in 2007 by a recruit session on Freak Rec by Dylan and Nanotek for the "Blood Worm" tune. In 2008 he signed up with Mindsaw Rec, Nightmare Rec, and Cyba Drum Rec.

More than a mere music group, the trio IDEM can be proud of being a real multimedia project in which the strength of the pictures compete with the beauty of the lights. In their work of scenography and videos, this group from Nantes (France) draw their inspiration from the classy pre-war black and white silent films and from Max Ernst Dadaist collages and they reach a highly suggestive result.
