[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="Unimpressed"][/caption]

You're looking at the very first photo snapped with the Nokia E71 that WOM World loaned me. Yeah, I'm not too impressed either...

Despite the obvious improvement over my E61i (3.2-megapixel auto-focus with LED flash vs. 2.0-megapixel fixed-focus without), the E71's camera has definitely got some issues.

It's entirely possible to coax some good results from it under the right conditions -- it seems to work best with lots of available light in "auto mode", where the LED sometimes fires as a fill-flash. This photo of a recent Sunday Brunch was taken at a window-side table in one of my favourite neighbourhood restaurants. And it turned out pretty well, I think.

Try to challenge the camera, though, and you'll be quickly disappointed. That first photo at the top of this post (the one with the reluctant feline subject) shows some definite issues with white balance in a room lit by a halogen lamp. And this "night mode" portrait of Toronto's Old City Hall has way too much noise -- though to be fair the night mode setting on my E61i isn't much better.

I myself would be perfectly happy with a better lens capturing to a more sensitive 2-megapixel chip. I've yet to print anything bigger than 4 x 6 inches, and even high-end camera phones have noise issues when you blow them up to full resolution. However, I think it's safe to say that you won't mistake an E71 photo for one shot with an NSeries camera -- have a look at my E71 Flickr Set and see if you agree...

Of course, it's not all bad news with imaging and the E71. The skinnier form factor means that it, unlike the wider E61i, can be securely gripped by Nokia's DT-22 mini-tripod. And as far as I know, this is the first Eseries handset with Nokia's Share Online pre-installed. So you can not only upload to Flickr (or Vox or Ovi) directly from the handset, but you can browse Flickr photos through the same app as well. For me this makes Share Online far more useful than other apps -- like the popular ShoZu, for example.

Unfortunately this particular version of Share Online cannot upload to YouTube, and with good reason -- just like the E61i the E71 captures video at a paltry 320 x 240 pixels, which means that it gets up-res'd to 640 x 480 for display by pretty much every video-sharing site out there.

Have a look at the video I shot on the E71 below, and note both the motion artifacts and the general softness of static images. For a graduate of a prestigious Canadian Film School this really stings, and in my mind it's the biggest overall shortcoming of this otherwise excellent handset.

BTW, this is my first-ever attempt at an unboxing video, so you'll hopefully forgive that I completely forgot about the included battery and botched the location of the guys who sold it to me. Import GSM is actually based out of Philadelphia and shipped me my white E71-2 (with North American 3G) super-quick!

Sometime ago there were some posts on my blog about poor sound quality given by headset HS-46 – the one you can find in a box with your E71. There were some suggestions that if you want to listen to the music only, you can use your own standard audio headphones and connector.

I assume there are some fans of wireless Bluetooth headsets among you, but as I’m FM-radio addicted this is not a solution for me. Several days ago I have found good headphones from Nokia, HS-16, allowing to take control of player (volume control), FM radio (volume control and stations switching) and voice calls (receive/end call and volume control). Those headphones are not small, but the way you wear it is comfortable, they are easily foldable and quality of sound is really good in comparison to default headphones.

What’s really cool about HS-16 is that it is delivered with 3 different cables: 2,5 mm Nokia jack, 3,5 mm Nokia jack, and 3,5 mm standard audio jack. It means that you can use the same headphones with E71 (or any other 2,5 mm jack supporting phone), other devices with Nokia 3,5 mm jack (like XpressMusic series) or standard player (iPod, PC, Mac, etc.) I really love it. I travel by train very often and thanks to those headphones and changeable cables I carry only one item with two cables. I can easily use it if I want to watch a DVD on my laptop or listen to FM radio with my mobile.

Been playing with the new update to Nokia Email over the last few days and really liking it on the E71 and N95 8GB. I've been able to add 3 email accounts from Yahoo, Google Mail and Google Apps Mail into the application by setting up the accounts online at email.nokia.com

One thing I did notice in the new updated that the old one didn't have is 'Sync Sent Items' which allows you to view all you sent items directly on the phone. Cool!

Now all I need is for them to allow you to set you email as whatever you want for a Email Forwarding account I have?

Checkout some screenshots on my Nokia Betalabs Channel over on Share on OVI.

I skipped blogging for a long time, my last two blogs were merely posted to give everyone (i mean the 7 or 8 people) who visit my little, fucked up, senseless, space in the blogosphere. i will tell you what had happened in my boring life this past few weeks. (in no paricular order)

UPDATE 1.

I got a new phone! Nokia E71, i have been using non-nokia phones lately, samsung, motorola, and sony ericsson. So i have decided to get this nokia E71 naman, for a change, and so far i am totally loving it. It has GPS, wifi, bluetooth, 3G, etc. etc. etc. In short, compact communicator ang arrive nya.

[caption id="attachment_57" align="aligncenter" width="212" caption="nokia E71"][/caption]

I planned on having an "unboxing the E71 blog" pero i was too excited to used it sa shop plang nilagay ko na ang sim card ko...kiber! And this is the first pic taken.

UPDATE 2.

I was very stupid to had an accident, self destruction mode nanaman ako. I was trying to get something in my storage room sa office. Hindi ako pala-utos sa office so i didn't bother calling the maintenance people or the janitors, ayun nalaglag ako, pahkalag lag ko, nalaglag pako ulit..ahahah! ang gulo lang. ayun! i suffered bruises and major back pains. instant 2 and a half days off ako. leche lang diba?!

UPDATE 3.

We don't have to settle in the old malls na wala naman masyadong kagandahan. Wala parin tatalo sa SM, glorietta, at kahit plaza fair o isettan pa yan! the best parin ang philippine malls. Pero now, may nag-open na bago bahrain city center mall! bongang-bonga!! puro signature botiques, Salvatore Ferragamo, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Kenneth Cole, Virgin, Debenhams, at kung ano ano pa. In short, window shopping lang ako! bwahahah!

Meron din doong in-doors water sports something, you can actually ride jetski! Oh yeah! im gonna try that for sure!

me, papa, and the white alien

me and the alien. he was trying to scare me...haha..try harder alien na maputla

the black alien and the pink fairy ata sya!

Anyway, it was all worth it.

UPDATE 4.

Three gadgets in two weeks!
After some considerable time chewing over the various options for connectivity I had been failing to figure out the right combination of phone, tariff, signal at work & sensible fair use.
That was until a friend at work lent me his 3 broadband dongle. I'd seen these but not given much thought to how they work. What he showed me was that they have a sim inside. Importantly a sim which can just as easily go in a phone and provide a 3g connection to that.

So I tried it in my Nokia E61. And I found something else out...I get a signal at my desk, and at several key places at work (e.g. the coffee bar)

With the sim in my phone I can run JoikuSpot which uses the wifi to create an ad-hoc hotspot that uses the 3g connection to provide data access.

And with that I can connect anything, and importantly my N810. And even more importantly, do so anywhere I get a 3g signal.

The broadband dongle plans also start at 1G cap, and fair use is not restricted to basic browsing. After all they expect you to use it with a computer.

So I went to the 3 site...and then talked myself into looking at the E71... On a basic plan for £20 a month with no upfront cost. Plus the broadband dongle is then half price.

And that clinched it, so now I have a shiny new Nokia E71 and a 3G dongle I can use either directly with my laptop or put the sim in either of my E series phones.
So £25 a month is a little more that I initially wanted to spend. But I've got a combination that is right for me. When Nokia finally bring out the next internet tablet with 3g support, I can pop my sim in that...

Next thing is probably to buy JoikuSpot pro (I've been using the 'lite' edition to prove it works)

As for how awesome my new E71 is... I'll write about it next week, after a full week of using it.

It's time to try my new connections on a trip...off to Southampton I think.

Okay, so I’ve been having some trouble grabbing screens from my E71, but thanks to a helpful t

Okay, so I've been having some trouble grabbing screens from my E71, but thanks to a helpful tip from this forum thread I've figured it out (hint: use the backspace trigger on Anthony Pranata's excellent Screenshot app).

So without further ado here's a quick visual tour of what's new and improved on Nokia's latest Eseries handset...

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="320" caption="Quick Look-up"][/caption]

You can now quickly find contacts directly from the home screen -- just start keying in letters and a list of matching entries will instantly show up!

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="320" caption="Mode 1"][/caption]

The E71's narrower display means that there's less room for application shortcuts on the home screen. Nokia has included a "Modes" function that gives you two home screens for the price of one, plus the option to switch easily between them.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="320" caption="Mode 2"][/caption]

Unfortunately there are only two modes available, although you can call them whatever you want. The defaults are "Business" and "Personal" -- instead of the uninspired choices in the screens above might I suggest "Home" and "Away"? "Good" and "Evil"?

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="320" caption="Remote Lock"][/caption]

Since the E71 is primarily a business device, it comes chock full of handy security features, like the ability to lock down your handset via text message. My remote lock code is "evasive manoeuvres" and my phone number is -- hey, waitaminnit...

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="320" caption="Data Encryption"][/caption]

You can even encrypt files on your memory card, handset, or both! You also have the option of using an encryption key -- which is saved to the handset but should probably be archived somewhere else just in case.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="320" caption="Media Folder"][/caption]

Thankfully the E71 loosens up its tie a bit with more media options, including an on-board FM radio, music store (which isn't yet licensed for Canada) and Podcast directory.

Oh and look at that, iPhone users... It's got a Flash Video Player too!

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="320" caption="Barcode Reader"][/caption]

No longer will this barcode evangelist have to choose between Kaywa Reader and QuickMark -- Nokia now includes its own Barcode reader on the E71.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="320" caption="Nokia Maps 2.0"][/caption]

And last but not least, Nokia Maps 2.0 is finally available for Eseries candybar phones -- though they might want to double-check their co-ordinates for Toronto's CN Tower...

Having used an E71 on loan from Nokia's WOM World for about a week now, I can say without reservation that it's got the best QWERTY keypad yet in this particular variant of Eseries handsets. But why just tell you when I can show you as well?

Note that I'm using my dummy white E71 as a model here, not the actual black unit that Nokia sent me, only because it photographed better on this rainy fall day...

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="E61: Worthy of a BlackBerry"][/caption]

You may remember that Nokia's first BlackBerry killer, the E61, won my inaugural QWERTY Smartphone Smackdown last year, narrowly edging out the Danger hiptop/Sidekick because it could be used with one hand.

As you can see the keys were nice and big, but compared with what was to come were a little too squishy in practice -- that is, they had lots of travel without much tactile feedback.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="E61i: A bit stiff in retrospect"][/caption]

The E61i addressed this with stiffer keys that gave a satisfying click when pressed. Squaring them off and separating them a bit also helped, as did adding more application shortcuts around the D-pad (and putting the D-pad on there in first place) but I actually found typing on my E61i a bit tiring after thumbing out a long document or email -- especially in comparison to the much bigger E90 and even Nokia's N95 8GB.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="E71: Cramped, but still quick"][/caption]

The diminutive E71 looked like it was set for disaster, with impossibly small keys jammed up right next to each other. But I'm happy to report that this just isn't the case. With both longer travel and tactile feedback -- that's "squishy and clickety" in English -- this is definitely the best keypad of the bunch. And despite being so close together the keys are curved vertically so accuracy is barely an issue. I've hit 'w' instead of 'e' a couple of times but I can be a pretty sloppy typist when I get excited. And given that you can hold and use an E71 in one hand much more easily than its forebears I don't think anyone will mind the smaller keys.

The E71 has reminded me how much I depend on text entry, and I honestly don't I could go back to a T9 device. Or in other words, I'm buying one.

After a short discussion about locr which I have described some time ago (please a post in here) it seems that this is not the best tool, especially if you want to export pictures to online photo services, like flickr.com. What should you use then? Nokia Location Tagger.

This application published a few months ago and tested publicly as a part of Nokia Beta Labs is no longer under development, but the final version is still available. Newer Nokia N-series devices have this application by default as build-in software component.

Now let’s focus on NLT for E71. Simply install it and after quick set up start it before taking pictures. The application can work hidden in a background. You can choose in its settings features like: auto start, or renaming picture name if the photo has a location added. Information about a place where the picture has been taken can be exported to flickr or any other page.

This piece of software was previously integrated into current version of Nokia PC Suite. The new version contains many bug fixes and suggested features added, for example: calendar editor, contact group support, contact thumbnail view and performance improvements.

New NCC is of course compatible with Nokia E71, but you need to have installed on your computer Nokia PC Suite 7.0.8 or higher. Remember that Nokia Beta Labs team always welcomes all users bug reports or suggestions!

With Leopard My Nokia E71 and N95 some times tether correctly and often it does not work. It Connects and then suddenly Disconnects. The status in top bar continue to display Disconnecting.... until I boot it.

In the event of emergency when I wanted to connect my Mac OS X (Leopard) with Nokia to browser internet or check my emails, it often does not work.

So here is the simple solution:

As Leopard Default Nokia 3G/GPRS script does not work for me. It has problems. You need to download Ross Barkman's Script from his site. Just scroll down to Nokia Section and download Nokia 3G (EDGE/UMTS) Script or click this link to download. Copy the script whole folder into your RootDrive>>Library>>Modem Scripts Folder.

Just pair you Nokia as usually you do from Bluetooth Icon in the top. Follow the instructions in Wizard and check both isync and use as a modem checkboxes.

When wizard finishes goto System Preferences>> Network >> Bluetooth (Select from Left).

Click on Advance. Click on Modem and then Select Vendor as Other.

In Model Select Nokia 3G CID1 script

Dial Mode should be Ignore Dial tone when dialing

Leave the all other settings as it is. Click OK to return to previous screen.

In telephone type your APN. I use warid. Also remember to put APN in your mobile Phone (Tools>>Settings>>Connection>>Packetdata>>Accesspoint). You can also check this site for Access Point Name.

Also check "show modem status in menu bar" and click apply.

Now you can connect with your mobile internet by clicking on telephone icon on top. No more problems for me.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="My Ninja is back!"][/caption]

Yes yes, Nokia's E71 has just been crowned smartphone and handset of the year by Mobile Choice Magazine in the UK. It's an improvement over my own E61i in almost every way, with built-in GPS, a better autofocus camera, etc. etc.

That's all fine and well, but that's not the reason you should buy one. The reason you should be very interested in this latest Eseries device is because of a single killer feature that leaves Apple's precious iPhone in the dust and puts this new Nokia on the same playing field as the best bleeding-edge handsets from Korea and Japan.

I'm talking of course, about the built-in loop for a cell phone charm.

Whether you're superstitious and seek to ward off excess radiation, have clumsy hands and need a wrist strap or just want to pimp out your mobile a bit, the E71 has got you covered. Nokia engineers clearly had a tough choice of where exactly to position the loop; while the top left or right corner of the handset would have been the best choice for charm-mounting, the bottom left is probably the best compromise between the market needs of teenage girls (and me) and those who want a full-on wrist strap or lanyard.

I contacted Nokia in Espoo, Finland, asking to speak with the E71's lead lanyard loop designer, but they still haven't gotten back to me for some reason. Hopefully I'll have that exclusive review for you soon; in the meantime, I give the E71's lanyard/wrist strap/keitai charm loop a 9 out of 10.

"Salling Clicker is our award-winning remote control software. It lets you control popular applications from a mobile phone or handheld computer through a user interface similar to a portable media player."

A long but very worthwhile essay detailing six channels of mass media (print, recordings, cinema, radio, television and the internet) and mobile's disruptive influence over all of them.

Nokia E71’ camera is most dissatisfying feature of the phone. Often it doesn’t take good pictures, especially with a poor light, while the flash is not helping anyway. Very often pictures taken with E71 are having annoying “violet haze”. We all do hope it will be fixed soon by software update. In the meantime check how good pictures is the phone capable taking of? http://flickr.com/cameras/nokia/e71/

Today I’ve checked Flickr stats for most popular camera phones by Nokia. A few weeks ago E71 was not present there and now it is ranked as 10th most popular picturing device from Nokia! Cool!

P.S. Have you joined our Nokia E71 Group on Flickr? There are almost 40 members sharing their photos of E71 or pictures taken with Nokia phone. Check group's page here!
