I have the E66 for two weeks by now. The E66 really surprised me and I do like using it. There are things I like about the business slider and some I don't like. I want to share these things with you. However, these are just the main-things, of course there are a lot more things I like or dislike.

Why to love it:

Built quality and form factor:

Nowadays more and more devices are made out of cheap plastic and feels also like that. The E66, however, has a stainless steel finish which looks indeed nobly and pretty stylish. The back is dominated by the great looking battery cover with the impressive Nokia Eseries label. Due to these materials the device has a great built quality and feels and looks pretty expensive. The slider and the battery cover are solid like a rock and do there job perfect. Especially the slider works really smooth and can be open/close really easy. Other than its awesome built quality the E66 also has a great form factor. Its dimensions are 107.5 x 49.5 x 13.6 mm, which causes that the E66 is really thin and not that big. Although, it's that handy and thin it's still puts an huge amount of features (WiFi, GPS, 3.2 megapixel camera and more) under its sexy hood.

Music player:

The E71 and the E66 are the first E-series devices to have the N-series music player pre-installed. This is a big step forward since not every E66 user is working 24/7. So, there is a equalizer, a bunch of options, a good user interface and a great transition between music and podcasts.

New applications:

The E66 comes with a bunch of total new or with new E-series applications. So you have the already mentioned musicplayer, as well as the Podcast application and the new Nokia Maps and Search. The total new applications are: Dictionary, Intranet, Modes, Encryption, Contact Search and a new Calendar.

I like especially the dictionary, Contact Search, Modes and the calendar. Modes is a pretty handy application which allows you to easily switch between two different surfaces with different themes, backgrounds, shortcuts and enabled applications.

Why to hate:

Camera in the dark:
In bad light conditions the pictures become pretty bad. Inside or outside with good light conditions the results are more or less good but using the LED some pictures become horrible. Here are some samples taken in different light conditions:

More over, the E66 has a camera-key on right-side. Unfortunately, this key doesn't open the camera application what I can't understand.

2.5mm Jack
Well, the E66 is still a business oriented device but I don't get the point why Nokia can't use a 3.5mm audio jack instead of the 2.5mm version, especially since the E66 has such great multimedia abilities like none E-serie device before.

Volume up and power button:

One thing that caught my eye immediately was the red power button which doesn't match with the rest of the device. More over, one of four buttons on the right hand side has a pretty bad pressure point. I'm talking about the volume up button. Pressing the other three buttons you can even feel a little "click" which you won't find at the volume up button. However, although you can't feel this click the button still reacts.

Nokia Email is an application which automatically pushes your email from your IMAP or POP email account straight to your Nokia S60 device. According to the official website following devices are supported: the E51, E61, E61i, E65, E66, E71, E90, N73, N80, N81 8GB and the N95. However, yet I don't know whether the N82, N95 8GB and so on are also supported. Anyway, although it's just in beta phase you should give Nokia Email a chance, especially since it's for free. Jump over to sign up.

Route 66, one of the most famous navigation solution for the mobile handset, is available in versio

Route 66, one of the most famous navigation solution for the mobile handset, is available in version 8 now. The really kind Route66 Support provided me with a free version of Route66 Mobile 8 and the DACH (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) maps. Let’s check how good it works:

Sales package:

The sales package includes:

A CD/DVD with the navigationsoftware, maps and manuals

Route 66 Mobile 8 – Quick Start Guide Manual

Route 66 Sync – Extra Services And Content For Your Navigation Manual

Installation:
The Route 66 Mobile 8 and the whole map content are already on the CD/DVD. Once you insert the CD/DVD into the PC the Route 66 Installer opens up and you can start transfer the maps and the sis file on your handset. It's really easy and everything is explained really well. Unfortunately, you have to delete all content from your memory card in order to get the sis file. Therefore I advice you to save everything on your computer before doing this. After the installation you’re ready to use Route 66. You can find the Route 66 Mobile 8 icon in its own folder called ‘’Route66’’. After the splash screen and some question appeared Route 66 tries to find your current GPS position and tries to zoom right to the place you’re currently located.

Navigation:

To start an new route just hit ‘’1’’ or hit the left softkey and than ‘’Search’’. You can choose between six different search modes:

Free text

Address

Nearby: eg. Attractions, Parking, Shopping and more…

History: your results until yet

My landmarks: Select your Homeaddress, Office or create other landmarks for even easily navigation

Contacts: Search addresses out of your contactbook

Once you’ve found the right address you can decide what you want to do with this address/place. So you can:

Show on map

Navigate to

Add to route

Save

Sent

Map display

After you set your destination and you have a connection with enough GPS satellites you can start the navigation. Of course you can save routes so that you can use them also afterwords. In the test using my Nokia N95 it worked pretty good and navigate me good to my destination, whether with the car or by feed. During the navigation you can choose between three different layouts. More over, you can choose between night colors or day colors, or choose between 2D and 3D perspective.

As you can see, you can get informed about your current speed, your current position, expected arrival and a bunch more.

If you turn into a wrong street or you miss a street the software recalculates the route immediately and gives you a new route or the best way to turn around.

GPS View:
By hitting ‘’5’’ you will find some GPS information with four subfolders. These GPS information are giving you information about your current position, speed, altitude, and some more.

Shortcuts:
To easily switch between different view modes, see the GPS status or listen to the latest announcement you just have to hit a special key. So, you don't need to make 5 clicks.

1 Search

2 Change layout

3. Change between Day- and Nightmode

4 Progress bar

5 GPS View

6 Switching between 2D and 3D

7 Search

8 Zooming to whole card

9 Volume on/off

0 Repeat of the recent driving instruction

* zooming in

+ zooming out

Verdict:

To put in a nutshell, Route 66 is a great navigation solution for your S60 device for a good price. The tested version costs about 60€ which is indeed a good price. Unfortunately, you can use just one device per license, which I can understand but otherwise some people change their devices every month. But all in all Route 66 is worth having on a device.

The majority of the camerphones features a LED or even Xenon flash to allow taking pictures in bad l

The majority of the camerphones features a LED or even Xenon flash to allow taking pictures in bad light conditions. Some of these are indeed useful but some are really bad. Due to I have some cameraphones on my desk, I wanted to test how good these are. The candidates are:

Nokia N82 Black:
The N82 Black features a 5 megapixel camera, a real Xenon light and a Carl Zeiss lens with autofocus. As a special feature you can connect the N82 to a TV-set to view pictures, videos and a lot more.

Sony Ericsson G900:
Just like the N82 Black, also the G900 features a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus. However, other than the N82 it just has a LED.

Nokia E66:
The business device has a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus on its back. Like the G900 it has also a LED.

Let the battle begin:

Left: Nokia E66 right: G900 bottom: N82 black (click to enlarge)

No doubt, the N82 has a great advantage with its Xenon light. However, if we take a look at the other two pictures we see clear differences. The E66's picture is much brighter but doesn't look that good, especially with this red colour and the blur. The G900 is to dark and doesn't impress me, just like the E66.

Winner: N82

The E66 really disappoints me. The picture is way to bright and you can read nothing. Other with the N82 and the G900. Both, the N82 and the G900, took good close up pictures. You can see almost every detail on the floor, the USB-stick and USB-card. However, the colour of the floor is on every picture different. Anyway, the N82 comes closest to the real colour.

Winner: N82

The distance to our object is about 2meters. G900's LED is to weak. You can see almost nothing. The E66 brings more or less an acceptable result. You can see the main things but the picture's still pretty blurry. No new news, the N82 brings a perfect result.

Winner: N82

Verdict:
No doubt, the Nokia N82 Black is with its 5 megapixel and its Xenon flash the perfect cameraphone for bad light conditions. However, let's talk about the E66 and the G900. The E66 has a really bright flash, nevertheless the results really disappoints me. Let's hope that a new Firmware will fix this. The LED of the G900 isn't bright enough to convince me. However, for taking close up images in dark light conditions it's really suitable.

Some days ago I received the new Nokia E66 and I asked you for questions which I will answer in this post now. Of course you can post further questions into the comments section which I'll answer later. Please, don't hesitate and ask as many questions as you like. Anyway, let the Q&A starts:

I’d like to see a shot of the E66 fully ‘in’ the case that came with it.

Can you please make photos of the carrying case ? Front and back please, I would like to know if there’s a belt clip or not.

>Here we go:

As you can see there is no belt clip.

And about the battery life of the E66 ?

>A full batterylog will be posted soon. However, since the E66 has a 1000 mAh battery it's rather strong and not as bad as N-series devices.

Yes, great picture. May I ask 2 questions?
1. Screen size does it bigger than E65? (I used to own E65)
2. Screen size does it bigger than N81? (I own now N81)

> The E65 has a 2.2'' screen display, the N81 and the E66 a 2.4'' screen.

> Since it is based on S60 3rd Edition FP1 it of course support Route66. Yet I haven't tested it on the E66 but as far as I know the latest Route 66 version works great on S60 devices.

Could you please check whether the Nokia E66 has some LED indicator for new SMS or Email message (like Nokia E51)?

>Yes, indeed. However, the LED isn't above the display like you may know it from the E51 but under the d-pad. The LED under the d-pad will impulse when you have a new text message.

Please: make a video when the phone is booting. I would like to know how much time is needed to become operative!

>Ive already made a video where I compared it with the Nokia N82 Black. I think I'll upload the video in the next days.

Has also the e66 an accelerometer like the n82?

>Yes, it does.

What about the build quality? Is the slider wobbly?

>Just one word: AWESOME. I've seen just a little amount of such good build devices. Due to the stainless steel finish it has a great build quality and feels solid like a rock. The slider is great too. No gabs and no wobbly slider.

Where is the speaker and is it loud or soft?

>The speaker is placed on the back, actually in the left corner. After having the N95 and the N82 I don't like its loudspeaker. But this doesn't mean that its speaker is bad, I just used to N82 and N95's stereo speakers. Anyway, it's loud and good enough to use it as a radio/mp3player in the kitchen, shower or anywhere else.

Aren't the speakers placed on the bottom left and bottom right side of the phone? this is from what i say judging from the pictures. there’s nothin placed at the back except the nice meta; cover.

>No, you're wrong. The things you mean are the buttons to open the cover. Believe me when I say that the speaker is placed on the back.

Does e66 have GPS or A-GPS?

>It has both.

I’ve never used a Nokia before so this may sound kind of noobish, but For some of the data applications can you set it to use wifi instead of a 3G network, or can you set it to only use wifi and not use a cellular data network at all [Say for the Nokia Maps application etc.] (I don’t have a data plan at the moment, and may be a while til i get one (stuck in a contract)) So I’d rather not get charged by my carrier.

>That's no problem ;) You can decide which data connection you choose. Being EDGE, 3G or Wifi. So, you don't have to be worried. However, sometimes you have to check the setting because some application choose automatically their data connection.

What about the Display ..iv seen few pics of e66 but im not impressed with the color n quality of display and icons ..is that the case or is it just the pics????

>Well, the icon look a little bit old and not as stylish as other S60 icons. Anyway, the display is bright and sharp.

Does the e66 have any lens cover? how about the e66’s video recording capabilities.. any good?

>It doesn't have any lens cover. The video-quality is 240x320. This is okay, but not as good as the N82's quality.

In your opinion, is the speaker placed conveniently at the back? For example, if the phone is placed on a table facing up, will the speaker get blocked for incoming calls, alarm, music etc.?

>All in all it's okay. However, sometimes when I'm surfing in the web and I want to listen to music my hand covers the speaker which causes some bad noise. It would be better to place the speaker on the side(s).

which one should i buy ?? N82 or E66 ?? they both have wifi and hspda, right.. ??

>Well, it depends on you wishes. If you need a good camera you should choose the N82. Both devices are great but it always depends on what you need.

Przypomniałoby to ułatwienie w postaci klawiatury QWERTY, baterię o solidnej wreszcie pojemności (1500 mAh), a ponadto GPS, nie wspominając o niezastąpionym Symbianie S60. 71 poza kierunkowym do Wrocławia, sugerowałoby następce E70, a więc telefonu z przekręcaną klawiaturą rodem z serii 68xx.

The initial euphoria and the rush that comes with long awaited product launches is finally over and

The initial euphoria and the rush that comes with long awaited product launches is finally over and after going through a lot of information on these new blue eyed boys of the Eseries lineup, I have decided to pen my own thoughts. The one thing I can say for sure that these are two of the most good looking devices ever made by Nokia and the White Steel colour/material combination is an absolute killer. However inspite of the fact that they have been released together, basically offer the same specifications and are targetted at the same group of people these are two completly different devices.

THE E66

The E66 is a classy slider, slim and comparatively light at a 121 grams considering the steel build. The 2.4" screen and dedicated application buttons also do it no harm. A 1000 mAh battery should at least keep it going for a day without much of a problem. The interesting addition in this phone is the accelerometer, there is automatic screen rotation and full screen view. In addition to this, the E66 will be the first Nokia device to include Flip Silent functionality, turn the phone around and an incoming call gets silenced, nice.

As far as build quality goes Eseries always seems to deliver and the steel will help it go a long way in that direction. This device in my opinion, will attract a lot of women owing to its design, size and looks inspite of the fact that its in no way 'girly'. On the multimedia side there is a 3.2 mpx camera with a dedicated button and the ability to capture QVGA video at 15 frames per second. The 2.5mm jack is there to play spoil sport again.

THE E71

The E71 on the other hand is the world's slimmest QWERTY and this is a phone I am really looking forward to. The E71 will be the device that will make people *want* to upgrade unlike the E66. The E61/E62 owners are definite candidates but so is anyone looking for a good Nokia QWERTY. The only other handset that has this functionality is the E90 and that for a lot of people it is simply too huge. If that is not an issue then the keyboard on it is simply to wide for a lot of people's likings.

The 3.2 auto focus camera might also be barely enough to attract Nseries loyalists. However having said that, the E71 does not have a dedicated camera key and in order to make a picture you will need to press and 'T' button to focus and the D pad to then click the picture. Inconvenient. But when it will come to battery life, this boy will rule the roost, a 1500 mAh battery in a 2.4" screen is divine, two days on heavy usage and you might still get home with some juice left.

THE COMMON ASPECTS

The Eseries people are generally slower to bring in newer features and practice caution rather than live on the edge. This explains why there is no FP2, but to be honest, I don't see this as a big deal at all. The enhanced email support, the homescreen customisation, plugins and so on more than make up for it. There is also a nice security application that allows remote locking and wiping of the device to protect sensitive data.

Both devices will be available in Grey Steel or White Steel, are priced around the 350€ mark with the E66 being slightly cheaper and will be widely available in Q3.

BOTTOMLINE

There is little doubt that these devices will do well, both in the enterprise market and otherwise. If I could, I would run out and get myself a White Steel E71, NOW!

I just can't seem to get over the looks of these phones to look further. Period. The basic specifications are the same as we already know them. A 3.2 megapixel camera, GPS, WiFi and FP1. When details first came out, the FP1 was a little disappointment but Nokia seems to have compensated with a lot of tweaks for these enterprise targetted devices. First up is a revamped calender application, plus the ability to switch the home screen depending on time of the day/week or whatever you may like. Another interesting thing is that these devices will come with support for Ovi. Plus the clock screensaver has been revamped and looks swell (Thanks Stefan!). More coverage below.

After months of anticipation, waiting, leaks, live pictures and even a review the E66 and E71 Demo

After months of anticipation, waiting, leaks, live pictures and even a review the E66 and E71 Demonstrations have finally gone live on the Nokia website. We'r not sure this is an 'official launch' or whether these demonstrations will be taken down as mistake, there are still no press releases or press photos too. But for what its worth Demos for both the E66 and E71 are up.

If this is actually the way Nokia are going to announce these phones, its a pity and they couldn't have picked a worse time. Its iPhone week and hate it or love it you can't ignore it, but this will surely mean that these two wonderful devices will not get their fair share of publicity. Whether or not will there be a glitzy launch or these phones just arrive unannounced remains to be seen, for now all we can do is check them out online.
Isn't strange? We've seen tons of E66 and E71 pictures, videos and XML files but we've no official word from Nokia yet. Today I've found the demonstration of the E66 and E71 showing the devices from all sides, being music, internet or Maps. I really like the E71. It pretty much looks like the E51 which I like too and has further great features like the 3.2 megapixel camera, GPS and so on. So, I look forward holding these devices in my hands this hot summer.

Today I want to share with you pictures showing the E66 from almost all its sides. The shiny business slider looks in my eyes really stylish, nobly and timeless. More over I like its size and its easy to open/close slider. What do you think about this device?
