I never really got the point of a Farmer's Almanac; as much as I would love to have a green thumb and live off the land, I am absolutely horrible at that sort of thing. The Farmer's Almanac, if you've never read one, let's you know cycles of the moon, harvesting information, and strange bits of old wives tales.

I can't say that it's necessarily the most interesting thing to plop down on the sofa with a tea, and peruse on a rainy day. However, Terry Pratchett has out done them by far with his Discworld Almanac (2005). It's filled with admirable bits of information about cabbages (truly more than you could ever want to know...), hilarious proverbs, and predictions for the sixteen months of the Discworld year.

I certainly can enjoy the Discworld Almanac---for its wit, and off kilter wisdom. I haven't actually bought it yet (I am working up to it, sorry Sir!), but whenever I pass that section in the library I always stop to read this one passage in it (which is actually the very first passage I ever read in it back in 2005):

"A newt called Nigel shall emerge from a river in far off NoThingFjord, and shall argue with all within hearing, in blank verse. And it will get mighty cross and stroppy, until at last it bursts into flame out of sheer indignation, and the people will wonder.

Howandaland shall have a mighty wave across its shore, followed by many dazed fish. Great will be the marine bounty, but few will survive to fry it."

How can you not want to enjoy some Terry Pratchett after the random bizarreness of that?

How could I not notice that?

There exists a second TV movie based on Terry Pratchett's glorious Discworld - more exactly based on his debut novels, starring Sean Astin and Tim Curry!

If that ain't enough, here are some more facts:

The Colour of Magic is directed by Vadim Jean, who also did the 2006 Discworld movie adaptation Hogfather, and is already set to direct another one in 2009 (Going Postal). Sir David Jason will star as Rincewind (see to the right), which is odd, because in Hogfather, Jason played Albert, Death's servant. I think it's funky that he takes another role in every movie, but shouldn't a character be cast slightly appropriately to the character's age?

Sean Astin will play Twoflower, which already sounds hilarious, Jeremy Irons does the Patrician, and we also get Christopher Lee voicing Death himself.

Now, only question: How do I get to see this?

I never got into Egypt's creation myths last time around, but as we've seen, I tend to get sidetracked with extra ideas. Just now I've found that Thomas R. Horn, writer of Nephilim Stargates has helpfully his information about stargates and watchers at watcherfiles.com. That'll be handy for quoting. Then any readers who've found my less-than-glowing reviews of his theories can have a look and decide for themselves without having to find the book. Read about Egypt, Osiris and the 42 judges, which Horn declares are the Watchers themselves in part 3, which looks to be nearly a word for word duplicate of the book version. I can't expand on every topic he covers, unfortunately. I'll pick a few things from Chapter 4 now.

Horn's suggesting that Zeus and Satan come from the same roots, that the Greek methods of worshipping Zeus left early Christians feeling aghast or, in the case of Antipas, hot around the collar - he was reportedly martyred by being roasted alive in a giant hollow statue of a bull, the bull being one of the many shapes Zeus could take. (EXTRA EXTRA credit: go read Terry Pratchett's Small Gods, the story of Om's last true believer and his dreams of becoming a great god once more.) Zeus and Luce also have the lightning thing in common, according to Luke 10:18 - "And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven."

Satan is linked to Dionysus as well. The bacchanals were rumoured to work believers into frenzies wild enough to entice the god himself to join in. In the book of Ezekiel (13:20), this behaviour was akin to devil worshipping. This doesn't mean Dionysus is actually Satan:

If you believe that Satan is historically the same entity as one or more specific ancient gods - especially a god who was beloved and worshiped in ancient times, rather than just feared or reviled - then you can believe that your Satanism is the modern revival of a venerable ancient religion, perhaps even "the oldest relgion" -- which feels a lot safer than, say, regarding your Satanism as the daring adventure of a bunch of Christian-era people sailing into uncharted spiritual waters with an entity reputed (though perhaps wrongly) to be the embodiment of "Evil."

But how do you decide which ancient god(s) to identify Satan with? Most Satanists who make such identifications have never bothered to read very many, if any, scholarly books about ancient religions. And, even with the best scholarship, there is plenty of reason to be wary of equating gods in different pantheons.

Similarities between two gods in different pantheons do not imply that the two gods are identical, just as similarities between two people do not imply that the two people are really just one person or that they are identical. For example, there could very easily be two different women in two different cities who both are tall, have blue eyes and blond hair, and have jobs as librarians.

That's from theisticsatanism.com, linked to above.

But enough about misrepresented belief systems for a moment. Moving back to the Watcher/alien/angel concepts, a direct quote from Horn, now, in part 4 (all links supplied by me, not in original text):

Hesiod's Theogony and Homer's Iliad take on mysterious ramifications when one considers that the Bible characterized the place of imprisoned rebel angels using the same words as Hesiod and Homer employed to describe the place of Titan gods--Tartarus and the Bottomless Pit. Couple this with eerily similar discoveries on the actual moon Iapetus, and you have a growing number of academics pondering whether Iapetus is, as it appears to be, artificial.

Are they real, peer reviewed academics, or fringe UFOlogists, that'd be my question. Anyway, Horn is suggesting that the fallen angels of the bible really did fall - from space. That yes, they were the very same Watchers that came from another plane of existence and possibly some still reside in Iapetus undetected. He mentions "ooooh! freaky!" sorts of comments made by an ex-NASA consultant about "how science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke could have written about these mysteries before they were discovered, and why Clarke included a monolith stargate, through which creator beings had passed for millions of years." Because he was a great writer of fiction, gentlemen. So was Carl Barks, but I haven't found anyone who really believes Terri-Fermians live underground and cause earthquakes. And yet earthquakes are happening ALL THE TIME!

On the topic of earth, specifically Mother Earth. Many goddesses are spiritually linked to Earth, like Demeter and Gaia. Many creation myths involve the mother figure giving birth to the sky and everything else. Horn includes some ancient quotes in part 5 and states,

it is obvious that the earth spirit was more than an agricultural or herbaceous facility, she was the personable and "eldest of all beings," the "holy goddess," the "bountiful spirit," the all nourishing mother of men who manifested herself within the popular idols of the many goddess myths.

Then he's back into the bible, digging up references in there to other spirits in the earth, these fallen angel/Watcher things, trapped underground, under water, that seek to influence the people above:

Christian theologians agree that the physical earth contains living, spiritual forces. In the Book of Revelation, chapter nine and verse fourteen, we read of "the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates." Likewise, in Job 26:5, we find "Dead things are formed from under the waters." The literal Hebrew translation is, "The Rafa (fallen angels) are made to writhe from beneath the waters." Additional biblical references typify the earth as a kind of holding tank, or prison, where God has bound certain fallen entities. (2 Pet. 2:4; Jude 6) That such fallen spirits seek to communicate with, or participate in, the affairs of humanity, is defined in Scripture.

That doesn't make it true, as far as I'm concerned. Some people buy into a hollow Earth theory (unrelated to Terri-Fermians) that can also be linked to the bible. Is hollow theory the same as what Horn's proposing? He hasn't written anything that would lead me to believe that. He hasn't even brought up Atlantis yet, but I'm holding out hope for later chapters.

For those keeping up at home, I've glossed over topics in chapters four and five this time. Chapter six is going to be fun...

I kept a recent copy of the Georgia Straight around (newspaper, not body of water), because I wanted

I kept a recent copy of the Georgia Straight around (newspaper, not body of water), because I wanted to remember the name of one of the hair salons listed. The owner of the hair salon in question cuts curly hair ringlet by ringlet to ensure an awesome cut---seriously this can be an issue, my most recent haircut has taken a lot of my curl away [weeps into handkerchief]. Anyways, the paper was just lying around, so I decided to branch out of my regular reading habits (Dan Savage and the Arts section) and see what else was going on.

This entire issue of the Georgia Straight was devoted to the "Best" in the city of Vancouver, and I quote here "Our Annual Guide to What Makes Our City a Winning Bet." I took this turn of phrase to mean what sort of unique venues/events/shopping/culture makes Vancouver a jewel of a city to live in. Apparently I was the only one who really thought this way.

I say this because---the votes are in!---here are a few of the "wtf?" things that we the people picked for the "Best" of Vancouver: Ikea, Cactus Club Café, and Starbucks.

I'll give them Cactus Club and Starbucks only because these items solely fall under the "Best Chain" in their respective categories. Cactus Club also got a shout out for their insanely automated toilets, I won't argue that either---it is pretty neat, but seriously folks...IKEA?

Ikea won not only "Best Furniture Store (Chain)," but also the categories of "Best Contemporary Furniture Store" and "Best Specialty Furniture Store." Will someone explain to me what exactly is "Special" about any of Ikea's items? I mean, half the time the cardboard boxes this shit comes in has greater appeal and craftsmanship then the actual furniture itself.

Do I own Ikea? Yes, of course. I'm a poor person who needed bookshelves stat, but would I ever list it as the "Best Contemporary" or "Specialty" furniture store in the city? Hell, NO.

Terry Pratchett has an excellent point to make about quality over quantity and rich vs. poor in his fantastically funny Discworld novels. The character Sam Vimes, an Ankh-Morpork Watchman, states (don't quote me, because I am not quoting, but this is the exact sort of gist) that the Rich stay rich, because they buy a pair of 50$ boots that last them twelve years. Whereas the Poor stay poor, because in that amount of time they will have bought themselves a 15$ pair of cheap boots each year (180$ when it's all said and done). This is Ikea furniture! It is the 15$ cheap pair of boots that you buy, just because you need boots and that's what you can afford! If I could, I would buy real furniture that my freaking descendants could have with them for centuries! You don't get that shizz from Ikea, no! It's local craftsmen lovingly cutting wood and crafting exquisite furniture for you to enjoy and delight in the realness of it.

I know there were a lot of exclamation marks in that last paragraph, but let's all get excited about local Craftsmen. They're busting their asses to bring you real "specialty" goods, and don't forget the local Designers who are busting their asses to bring you real "contemporary" goods.

Anyways, whenever I go to Ikea I always remember a short horror story I read once, I cannot remember who wrote it (I wish I could). It was about a ghost haunting the children's play area. The ghost was a child as well that wanted a sort of eternal friend, or something to this effect, and it killed a child by shoving one of the plastic balls (you know from the peed-in ball room) down the kids throat so far that the paramedics etc couldn't remove it to save the child. The story was told from the perspective of one of the night security guards, and it was all very disturbing as a good horror story should be. The only problem is that in the soulless confines of an Ikea this seems like a probable event. They herd you like cattle in a slaughter house-the arrows pointing the way through each and every display area, a less electric version of a cattle prod. There is little to no oxygen it would seem, as I find myself overcome by some sort of soul sucking stupor.

The only great thing about Ikea is the Dime bars (the European version of the Skor bar, a perennial favourite). I do respect the fact that they provide me and others with cheaply made, cheap furniture when I cannot afford to buy giant hewn bed frames and such. And yet honestly, I fail to see how Ikea makes Vancouver an "Exotic Jewel of a City" worth pulling up tent stakes for. There is so much more going on in this city and this is what we vote for? Gah...

A/N: Sarah tells me that Ikea forces their Employees to vote for Ikea, just so they can get into the paper. Scandalous! She says it's an exertion of social something or other (she was actually very concise in her wording, but I have forgotten, and I can't really ask her until later so you get "something or other" until she corrects me).

One of my favorite zombies of all time--up there with "Bub" from Day of the Dead and "the Tarman Zombie" from Return of the Living Dead-- is Reg Shoe from Terry Pratchett's awesome Discworld fantasy/satire novels.

Reg Shoe is a more than a zombie, he is a policeman in his local municipal Night Watch, and an advocate for undead rights. As the novels go (there are something like 30 Discworld novels, and I've only read about 15 of them), Reg feels that the Night Watch is treating undead citizens unfairly, so he starts the "Fresh Start Club" to advocate for equal rights for the less-than-fully-alive. (The Fresh Start Club includes zombies, ghouls, werewolves, banshees, vampires, and a bogeyman.) However, after the Club is started, the number of complaints against the Night Watch by the undead double, and they are all personally directed against Reg Shoe.

Reg is never the main character of a Discworld novel, but Pratchett uses him perfectly and hillariously in supporting roles.

If you've never checked out Pratchett (which you might not have, if you're American [In Great Britain, he's the #2 bestselling writer behind J.K. Rowling. In the U.S. his books do well, but not that well.]) and you're a zombie fan, then one of the novels featuring Reg Shoe might be a good place to start. My favorites include Night Watch and Men at Arms. They're delightful. (There's also a zombie lawyer named Mr. Slant who pops up from time to time in Pratchett's stories. Like Reg Shoe, he is quite amusing.)

Oh yes! This is "vintage" Terry Pratchett - a Discworld story of the type that Terry P has spun wonderfully so many times before.

The story opens with a wizard trudging through a thunderstorm to the little village of Bad Ass, high in the mountains. An unseen presence follows him inexorably. In the village a child is being born to the local blacksmith and his wife - the eighth son of an eighth son, and thus destined to be a wizard.

The wizard passes on his magical staff and meets THE ENTITY WHO SPEAKS IN CAPITAL LETTERS, so passing on from the world to whatever lies beyond. The child, (delivered by witch Granny Weatherwax) wrapped in its swaddling clothes, reaches forth a tiny hand and grasps the wizards staff, sealing his wizardly destiny. Err.. his wizardly destiny?! Oops... the child is a girl!! Horrors, everyone knows girls can't be wizards.

Granny Weatherwax has no love for wizards and raises the girl (Eskarina) in the ways of wisdom witchcraft. But the magic (via the staff, which proves to be indestructible) begins to work its way through her and they set off to the Unseen University, seat of magic in the Discworld, in the city of Ankh Morepork to settle the matter.

The adventure unfolds in the way so many of the wonderful Discworld novels have previously. Fantastically inventive and with great humour.

Millions of people have read Terry Pratchett and certainly I have read just about everything he has produced. I haven't clicked with everything he has written - some of his early works, like Dark Side of the Sun were a bit strange and I didn't like several others such as Johnny and the Dead, Carpet People, Wintersmith, Monstrous Regiment and Pyramids. But almost all of the Discworld novels are fantastic. Terry P has the knack of being hilariously funny, satirical, touching and deeply understanding of the human condition, all within a few sentences in any one book. Often he has produced really good murder mysteries, that just happen to have characters who are dwarves, goblins, werewolves, zombies, trolls and the like.

If you are one of the few people who have not read a Terry Pratchett novel - do start!

The first book by Pratchett not set on Discworld since, er, Good Omens, I think, is not only a philosophical masterpiece but also side-splittingly, laugh out loud funny. I think only Pratchett (and sometimes Dawkins) can get this combination right.

In 'Nation' we witness the ancient struggle between belief and reality: If the gods (or god) exists, why is there so much wrong with this world? Is the proof for supernatural belief a loads of of old twaddle? These age old questions are set on an idyllic island in an alternative reality Pacific Ocean that has just hit by an enormous tsunami, wiping out it's population. Only a 13 year old inhabitant and an English girl (that was stranded with the schooner she was travelling on) are left on the tropical paradise that is slowly but surely filling up with refugees. In between making beer, defending the island from cannibals and negotiating with the British Crown these two have to come to terms (no, not with their sexuality. This is not Blue Lagoon) with their inner and cultural daemons. While I was looking forward to another Discworld and some Shenanigans of Vimes and his posse, this book is very welcome in a time when the secular western world is under attack from the Sarah Palins of our time.

'Nation' is tender, humane, a delight to read, very moving, and has maybe the best ending of all of Pratchett's books.

I'll now read it again.

This year was not so good. I have not read a lot of books.

But the things i have read they were cool. Do you know series Discworld? Amazing series by Terry Pratchet. In my collection of books there are around 10 books from Discworld. Discworld is fantasy genre.

My favorite character is Death and his granddaughter.

I think on Sky they made two movies. First is Colour of Magic and second is Hogfathers. The second one is amazing, as for the Colour of Magic is so so. Soul music is cartoon. It is also amazing. I think Discworld series is need to read for every Fantasy fan.

I've just finished reading the new book by Terry Pratchett called Nation and although it was not a Discworld book as I expected, I did enjoy it. It's similar to his other books in many ways, but it reads with a really different voice and I actually forgot I was reading a pratchett book at some points in the story.

However, there is much less humour and much more philosophy. The story also lacked some of the momentum of his discworld books and although it was a wonderful journey through a meandering story with many of the same themes as his previous books, I didn't know where the story was heading most of the time and even when I got to the end I wasn't sure what the message was supposed to be!! It certainly felt like he was trying to get something across, but what it was, I'm not 100% sure!

I also didn't realise that this book was aimed at children rather than adults. At points I felt it was too simplistic and contrived even for children, and I'm not sure that's forgivable since he has written some fantastic children's stories such as Wee Free Men in the past without this problem.

Overall, it was an enjoyable read but not up to his usual standards. Have you read the book yet? What did you think of it?

I haven't done any blogging or reading of other blogs since Sunday because I've spent every spare minute reading Terry Pratchett's new book 'Nation', which I've just finished. So, loyal reader (that's you, Jo), now I am back.

I love his books, and I think characters like Sam Vimes, Susan Sto-Helit, Tiffany Aching or, indeed, Death himself stand comparison with any other heroes from literature.

This one isn't set on the Discworld, his flat planet on the backs of four elephants standing on a giant turtle swimmimg through space. It's actually set on Earth, which initially disappointed me, but it soon turned out to be just as good as the rest.

[caption id="attachment_763" align="alignright" width="63" caption="Tiffany, and her hat full of sky"][/caption]

He thinks about the way people think more than anyone else I've ever read, and has a wonderful way of expressing their thoughts.

Tragically, he's been diagnosed with Alzheimers, a staggering waste of such a fertile brain.

I wish him as much good health as possible. He has made so many people so happy, and his tales of the Discworld have given us a greater insight into this one.

The first book to occur on Terry Pratchett's Discworld, The Colour of Magic describes the journey of Rincewind and Twoflower -- the Disc's first tourist and tour guide. The reader follows them on their journey starting in Ankh-Morpork and concluding at the end of the world. Pratchett's wit and style keeps the reader entertained along with his "serious" take on fantasy as his protagonists make their way through various fantasy genres including dungeons and dragons and magic pony.

The Colour of Magic often comes with a warning: though it's the first it's not the best, and some Amazon reviews seem to uphold this opinion. Though it's rather unlike Pratchett's later works, it's a humorus and endearing novel in its own right. As Pratchett has described it himself, it's a novel of travel and exposes the reader to the Discworld at its roughest stage. This is the "primordial goo" that the rest of the Discworld bubbles forth from and definitely worth a read.

Conclusion: Keeper.

My father, who loves Pratchett, had given me his copy to read. So when my last book ran out I thought I should start reading it again.

Now don't get me wrong - that already bodes - Pratchett is very witty and makes some amazing leaps of the imagination. His prose is concise, easy to read, and sometimes just rolls of the page like poetry. Nothing relies on understanding a particular joke or knowing - in the case of this book - a specific film. I finished the book in 2 evening sessions of a couple of hours with a smattering of travel reading during the days. The book and I, we just didn't click.

I don't know whether the fact that the book wasn't intellectually engaging enough for me, or if it didn't push me enough to expand my mind. I found it a good read, but a pulp book. I'm guessing it could be the specific book, I find it hard to imagine all Pratchett's fans are misguided, I just don't get it. I know from experience sometimes an author or a book - no matter how brilliant the author or book are - and I just don't have chemistry.

On to the next in the Discworld series.

I'm sure you know a good book for me to read. I read most fiction and non-fiction, classics, pulp, ebooks on how to succeed in networking, papers, magazines, and much more. If there is anything you'd like me to read and perhaps write a brief review about please post it in the comments below.

My latest Discworld read focused on Moist Von Lipwig, a new character for me. Moist is a scheming conman, but he's also kind of sweet(!) and he has a good conscience lurking somewhere beneath that money mad exterior. Being a conman was, in a way, an addiction for him, offering him a constant 'thrill of the chase' feeling. Lord Vetinari puts a stop to all that when he forces Moist into becoming the new Postmaster of Ankh Morpork. Well...it was either that or death..and after some consideration, Moist chose the post.

This story does not move along quite as well as some of the other Discworld tales, but it is humorous all the same, and has some classic characters. Post office worker, Stanley, is one of a kind: he obsesses over his pin collection and is liable to have one of his 'fits' if perturbed in any way. The golem characters, (workers made from clay) which were also new to me, were quite endearing too.

Maybe it was because I was reading this at work, and thus, wasn't able to give it my full attention but some of the details were way over my head. Clacks towers anyone? These form part of a telegram type system which threatens the post office's future, but fortunately the towers are constantly breaking down. Cue some long winded explanations and theories about clacks technology. I just read it without taking it in...

Definitely not the best Discworld book but still enjoyable and I'd like to see more of Mr. Von Lipwig.

Hi and welcome at the second edition of Vashj Weekly, where we discuss what happened each week.

Click Continue Reading for all the hot details of this week!!!!

PVE Progression Alliance

Progression wise, it was an interesting week for alliance with 2 SWP kills. Council of Tirisfal finally managed to master the Kalecgos encounter. One would say they are finally on track; however, they didn’t manage to kill Illidan this reset. Flame tanking is hard, kk?

At first sight, one would say that the difference between the very good players they have and the less gifted players is too big. Strong and co have a big challenge ahead, let’s hope for alliance sake it isn’t too big.

(Thx to CoT for providing the Screenshot!)

The other SWP kill is from: The Aunans.

Yes, the wankers managed to kill Brutallus and have therefore passed their gear check exam. The most successful guild on Vashj during the summer slack, is progressing steady through Sunwell and if they can keep their activity up, we will see more kills soon.

Discworld seemingly didn’t kill any other bosses in Black Temple this week. Hopefully this reset they will be more successful for them to get out of mediocrity.

PVE Progression Horde

Horde wise, nothing really special happened. Yeah, the feel good guild Love Circle killed some bosses in MH and Endure bumped their recruitment topic, so that answered my question last week whether they still exist or not. Off course, my horde knowledge isn’t that big as I play alliance myself. It is time I get myself a horde char.

Economy

With the 5 successful guilds in SWP , prices for Terocone, Netherbloom and Nightmare vine are higher than a Frappuchino in Paris. Farming for them is almost impossible at this moment as they are as rare as a living France guy in London.

Saying goodbye to...

This week we had to say goodbye to our beloved Pussycat. The whole community enraged after she opened a topic where she posted a picture of a very hot woman, who she claims to be. Too bad she left so fast; I was looking forward to make a couple of sex jokes. There are never enough sex jokes I have to find another victim. If any hot woman with around 36-29-36 as measurements wants to volunteer for some daily badly tasted sex jokes, pm me in game.

Community

Each week I will tell if some special community event happened. This week nothing extraordinary happened. I would like to mention the Daily VashjFM show hosted by several players on Vashj. They are the ones that organize community events, like Gnomish death race, Hunt the player, Outdoor PvP battles, etc.

Till next week wish you all fun ppl!

Thirteen Random Pictures

"Yellow," he thought. The word yellow wandered through his mind in search of something to connect with.

This was the view from my front garden this morning.

I like my artsy pictures, and this qualifies i think. I took this while having breakfast in the city center. That was one of the central bus station buildings, half way through being demolished.

"Cake or Death?" - Eddie Izzard.
This is the anthropomorphic personification of Death from Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. (and Death of Rats) I really wish i could be that famous some day :D

Alfie makes another appearance on the blog! He's looking grumpy next to my suitcases as i started packing to go to uni already.

The fun you can have with filters. That's me looking like an alien. It reminds me of a line in my WIP:
"If Dresdon hadn’t been so hung-over he could have sworn he could see gamma rays, he would have said Ace was jealous. As it was he didn’t care. "

Another artsy picture. This one i took at Roath Park on a day trip with my fiance.

now we move on to my hobbies

Those guns you see? yeah they each belonged to someone i shot in the head lol. This is from the game Unreal Tournament -Game of the Year edition. I love playing it. so much so i actually dreamt i was in the game last night. (i have weird dreams)

this was me cheating to get a damage amplifier and a redeemer (big ass nuke essentially) - i just thought it would be funny to include this one.

My fiance found this around the net so i don't have photo credit. It was apparently an original comic, and someone put the lyrics of "love is a battlefield" over it. I love this song and find this picture hilarious.

If you hang around me for any length of time you'll know i LOVE astronomy. here are some photo's from APOD

the milky way!

Rainbows in the clouds - very rare to see this by the way.

Six rainbows in Norway i believe.

I love this picture!

So there we go, thirteen random pictures.
