I was bored and decided to hack support for viewing Julia sets into GMandel. The code could be nicer, but that will come tomorrow. I should really stop slacking and make a proper hierarchy of widgets (GFractMandel and GFractJulia should inherit a common GFractWidget) to make the code more manageable but this will do for now.

These are some examples of Julia sets generated with GMandel:

I strongly recommend The Computational Beauty of Nature to those interested or curious about this kind of stuff. It is a nice book that can even be read without too much mathematical or computer science background. One of the nice things about fractals and chaos is that you can see most the stuff yourself through pretty pictures.

I heard someone say the title of my blog today on today and it seemed fitting for my life. My brain feels this way, my room looks this way, and my school bag of all things is like this. I have boxes at school that are not unloaded or put away, this was a first for me for the school year. Sometimes I don't have everything unpacked but this year is just crazy. We kindergarten teachers have so much "stuff." Manipulatives, paint, paper, other random things that you think you could possibly use one day in the future.... My room does not look bad it just looks like I still have work to do. I think I need to create a goal sheet for me to use each day. When I have a huge to-do list I get really overwhelmed. However, maybe having a small list of 5 things I wish to accomplish each day would be better. My bag is another story... I have everything just kind of shoved in there. I attempted to organize it on Friday when I was looking for my car keys but nothing really got done. My brain on the other hand is just another story and probably the reason I have so much trouble keeping everything organized. Ah! So my goal for this week is to create a sheet in which I can use to note my daily goals. After I have done this I will share it with my readers...

Any other tips for keeping yourself and your classroom organized?

You probably are. But it’s not the clothes and blah I’m talking about. I meant style in the everyday things we do.

One of the qualities you could by far attribute to me even without being judgmental is clumsiness. I may act the part of an elegant young woman if required but that is not without pain and effort. Otherwise, the real me is hideously gawky and graceless. I drop, spill, break and trip over things. I crash into people so often, it’s not even funny. Usually it causes acute embarrassment (It might help if I bumped into good humored people instead of the stern, important ones) You can tell I have been somewhere by simply gauging the level of chaos there.

I openly envy those that possess this evil, desirable trait- chic. You don’t just have to look it, you have to live it. HOW does anyone manage that? I’m referring here to those unreal folks who do things perfectly- Light a match on the first strike. Pour water into glasses with not a drop out of place. Put stuff right back where it belongs after they’re done. The people that don’t run into anyone and even if they do, they remain unflustered and gorgeous. Such persons hold complete control of their activities- mind and body forever in co-ordination. They also do not say anything foolish, have impeccable manners and never get flak from anyone. Respect! This stylish community is not to be labeled as mere lookers; for their ready wit, intelligence and comic timing cannot be ignored. Incredible…

Alright, I’m wondering now, if such a clan was to exist and I knew one of them wouldn’t it still be like not knowing them? Most of the time I would not accept his/her being as true. Plus all things perfect are boring after a while. Where’s the unpredictability? The impulsiveness? The madness? This has been one useless blog post. Sorry for wasting your time. Oh, here’s my conclusion anyway. Method in every damn thing is wasted. Clumsiness rules because it is funny, makes people smile and it can also cause serious injury. Therefore, just be perfect in what you honestly like doing. Rubbish the rest.

Using Causality to Solve the Puzzle of Quantum Spacetime by Jerzy Jurkiewicz, Renate Loll, and Jan A

Using Causality to Solve the Puzzle of Quantum Spacetime by Jerzy Jurkiewicz, Renate Loll, and Jan Ambjorn (Scientific American)

Note: This was originally published with the title "The Self-Organizing Quantum Universe"

Prerequisite knowledge: Relativity and Quantum Mechanics are fundamentally at odds with each other. Relativity seems to work on big scales, from satellites and planets to solar systems and galaxies, while QM only seems to work on smaller scales with electrons up to, maybe, actual cells. (That's another topic ...)

The quest to unify these two physics theories is one that has been voyaged since late in Einstein's life. A theory of quantum gravity is one of those holy grails.

This article tells of some research done by the authors into one such theory of QG. In their theory, they make spacetime itself governed by some the laws of QM. To test it, they ran simulations of evolving spacetime under their theory. They approximated spacetime by gluing 4-simpleces together. (4-Simpleces are the four-dimensional successor to the triangle and the equilateral pyramid.)

What they found was interesting. Either the whole spacetime layed out flat like a polymer, or it folded in on itself infinitely to become a bizarre crumpled-up ball resembling a fractal. This wasn't promising; our universe is in between these two extremes. So they added a new principle that they called "causality," where they give spacetime pieces an arrow of time. This directed the evolution of the spacetime into something that was once again interesting. In the new results, whether spacetime was made of smooth hills or chaotic foam depended on the scale! Furthermore, whereas the polymer universe and crumpled universe from before had "dimensions" of about two and infinity, this new universe had a dimension of about 4.02 plus or minus 0.01, which is what we should expect!

Musical rehearsals at my school have begun. This year our production is going to be Aida, and is definitely a lot more challenging than the show we put on last year (High School Musical). I got called back to try out for the lead (Aida), but one of my good friends got it over me. It is okay though, she is a year older than I am, so seniority sort of comes in to play.

Anyway, instead, I was cast as a featured dancer. I have always told people that I have two left feet. I have never been able to just get up and dance, having to take the time to learn everything step-by-step. This year is different. The dancing is so unique and hard, but I have been able to grasp it more easily than I ever have before. Maybe it is because I can actually breathe when I am standing on the stage this year. Last year, we had close to eighty people in our production of High School Musical, and there was barely enough stage to accommodate everybody. This year is better. Our choreographer (AMAZING) made up all of the moves to the musical on her own, and she hasn't had to repeat herself. Last year, there were so many people talking, that instructions had to be repeated again and again and again.

It is a rather small cast, yes, (barely thirty), but I think that it is going to be wildly successful and definitely a nice change from last year's hectic number. We also have a new director who has been great so far, and seems to be able to handle all of the chaos and late hours better than our last teacher.

I found out today that I actually don't have two left feet like I thought I did. I just have never been able to focus as well as I did today. There were always people talking backstage and other distractions, but so far, this year has been a lot better.

In the words of our last teacher, and the teacher before her: "On with the show!" xD

ATTENTION! We’ve breaking news – the year has gone and gotten lost! Yes, lost. And now, having lost structure, time is collapsing; years are bombarding each other, months are going rapid, weeks are smutty, and days are off floundering around.

Europe has lost the night, Brazil claims to be selling saviors that look suspiciously like mongooses, Coach believes that purses can talk, New York has turned to the left of Vermont, and Hawaii is swimming away.

Superman lost the ability to fly, mid-flight, and his body hasn’t been found. Sherlock Holmes has been kidnapped by Auguste Duplin. King Arthur fell through the White Rabbit’s hole, colliding into a bemused William Shakespeare. Together they trotted off, in search of the golden ticket, and haven’t been seen since.

Other people have gone missing, ones not worthy enough to be mentioned, and others, non-existent before, have appeared. Yet, impossibly, all those from the lost year have somehow faded in and out of existence, speaking but not speaking, warning but joking.

Captain Nemo is caught under the sea, covered by thousands of octopuses that are dying for his autograph. Don Quixote is trying to gather up protégés while insisting that a decree is pursued to put all windmills under house arrest.

Days are awkwardly missing at times. Wednesday is fascinated with Norway and usually Friday has to bring it back. Tuesday and Thursday are often caught dancing in wishing wells, and Monday talks non-stop. Sunday and Saturday have run off together and a search party organized by March is pricking and prodding through Iron Man’s liar.

September freed Professor Plum and Miss Scarlett from Clue and Christmas keeps chasing them off from Monopoly.

Doctor Who has come and gone, seeing the situation as unsalvageable. Harry Potter joined with Bella from Twilight to find Mr. Darcy, who ran away with August.

And January has decided to run off the world’s edge – a suicide that brings the world skidding to a halt.

WHIMPER!

And so the world ended, not with a bang but a whimper (just as T.S. Eliot predicted).

*note this is one of the old posts I actually wrote a long time ago– just FTR*
*…But as

*note this is one of the old posts I actually wrote a long time ago-- just FTR*

*...But as I am writing it now, I've modified it significantly so as to blend better with current thought, and also to incorporate recent concepts when relevant...*

As I explained in Playing the Victim, one of my co-workers was suffering from acute depression, and asked for advice. The solution I gave her was *obviously* to stop "playing the victim", and accept responsibility for her life - thus empowering herself and providing the psychological leverage needed to deal with the other issues, and begin progressing with life again. Although this solution is logically valid, I've become to realize more and more how much truth cannot be logically justified -so, for lack of better feelings, I should "be more considerate of her feelings"- for lack of better phrasing - So this depression needs to be handled more gradually, using "gentler" methods :P

Due to the ever-constant chaos already eminent in her life, dealing with it logically would be impossible, because logic has already become irrelevant. I assured her that I would see what I could do in finding a [irony alert!] more *reasonable* solution, and fortunately, I think I've found one. Well, from the looks of things the *best* solution is a work-in-progress, but at the very least it's something to work off of. Of course the solution has nothing to do with drugs. I was medicated for several years in the past, and although I definitely had, and *have* the illnesses I was diagnosed with, I found I did far better without them. Come to think of it, the several different medications I was given did little more than sedate me. As far as I can tell, that was about it. Don't ask why, I have know clue :P

As I mentioned in that same post ("Playing the Victim") I was able to deal with my psychological issues best (by an overwhelming margin) without medication; if anything the medication just made things worse. So although I cannot speak for anyone else, From my person experiences I would definitely recommend against the ingestion of psychological drugs of any kind. Treatment is frequently contrasted with "Cure", being only a temporary/partial solution (i.e. to minimize symptoms)- Cures are permanent.

I think the fact that medication only minimizes symptoms is particularly interesting- after all, "Symptoms" are the proof that the body/mind/etc. is fighting against the disease/etc. If the symptoms disappear, that doesn't mean the person is better. In fact, if the disease/etc. still exist despite symptoms, that should be considered a bad thing, since the immune system is essentially being suppressed, allowing the disease freely roam, resulting in far worse [in this case] mental health. Well, that's just speculation on my part, but such an opinion is also implied in "I Never Promised you Roses". In the cases of depression, the "cure" might well be to deal with the problem as described in "Playing the Victim"- however, for now, a temporary solution [*treatment*] should suffice.

Among many-- more minor illnesses, I have Bipolar- previously known as "manic-depressive" disorder. The previous name is much more descriptive, but I guess they're trying to be more politically correct :P I regularly go through cycles- between depressive and more manic states; I maintain a more "normal" demeanor in-between. The upside and downside of Bipolar is the same: the cycles are predictable. That is- I only get depressed or manic "when I'm supposed to"- this makes cycles very predictable, and I can schedule accordingly, since it works like clockwork. But of course, no one likes getting depressed-- well, I'm sure plenty of people like getting manic though :P Then again, I don't ever get anxious (for certain reasons that I'll cover in later posts) so I don't have to deal with that part of the manic cycle...but for whatever its worth, that's the downside.

A while ago I realized that I could completely thwart the depression cycles (although the manic isn't so bad) by making a habit of automatically rejecting the logical validity of all negative thoughts. Although I did not realize it then, I had already been doing such a thing for a few years now. But I have also realized that, in accordance with balance, to disregard any emotion logically, I had to lose my emotions; this is because to logically get rid of emotions, one must believe any previous emotions to never have existed- this is necessary because emotions are the backbone of passion and desire- no decision can follow through without one's emotions backing it.

Getting back to habits though, as I detailed in [insert post], it's possible to force oneself to change the perception of anything you want, even if it is the exact opposite of the original and natural perception. In that experiment, as I was walking in the freezing cold (of last winter, to be exact) I decided to imagine the pain as being pleasure, and concentrated on the cold being a good thing, setting aside all "common sense" in favor of this perception. The result was a bit surprising- by concentrating the pain completely went away- it was very exciting seeing how perceptions can be manipulated this way.

The only thing lacking with this is that one must concentrate to experience the conversion. That's where habits come in. The purpose of habits is to keep of memory of thing that are done often, and usually require a degree of concentration. It is an adaptation that allows us to perform tasks better the more that we do it, because those things we've already concentrated on a lot are stored in our "cache", which frees up our "memory" to focus on the finer details, or other tasks. Although perhaps I'm a bit partial due to my hobbies, I think that the human brain is strikingly similar to the computer- or, even more likely, the other way around.

As a result of these habits, I have not felt depressed for a few years now.

*Note "felt"- "depression can mean more than one thing; "felt" meaning that I have not had any sad or depressing thoughts for a while. In retrospect BTW this is not a good thing- to accomplish this required "unbreacheable" psychological walls to be put up, resulting in an almost completely nonchalant perspective towards everything; the root meaning of depression ("to slow down"/ "fall" / "be undone" /etc) is still true even now- the depression just does not include the emotional components (i.e. sadness/melancholy/etc.)*

There was one brief period a while back (see Self-Awareness post ) but that only last half an hour. I was thrust into a terrible depression, due to not being able to prepare a decent resume (I had no work experience at the time). But, seeing that I needed it to get done, I forcibly moved myself forward, and was able to pull off what had appeared to be impossible, thus effectively ending that "episode". Recalling this incident has also played a key role in determining another, more "reasonable" solution to my coworker's problem.

All of "today" (*see top*), as expected, I experienced the usual wave of depression. Well, I say depressed, but (as explained above) the only symptom I still experience is a complete lack of motivation to do anything productive. On these days I might normally do nothing but watch anime- and in WCS even lack the motivation to play games. But even when I have such days, going to work is not a problem. Actually, on these days going to work is actually more of a vacation, anyway. Much of the reason for this is explained in Opportunity- that is, working each day with the awareness that half my pay is not in the salary, but in the opportunity to work. As I've discovered over time, the reason why working can be so fulfilling- is because of expectations- knowing that our coworkers and supervisors expect us to do the job well, and fullfilling those expectations, fills us with a wonderful sense of pride. The way I see it, this is "running away from ourselves"- here's why:

Who we are- that which we perceive ourselves to be, and also who and that which we perceive others to be, is dependent on memory, which also means that we can only see ourselves and other people as we were in the past. That is because we are contantly changing and growing, clarifying and building upon who we are every second, although the changes may not be noticed for years. Because of that, the person we perceive ourselves to be, is actually the past, and is not entirely accurate. The irony (and amusement) of this, is that we are able to change in the first place for this same reason. See, to move forward and grow, we must leave our past behind us, which I believe is a necessity due to balance. Interestingly enough, it is also a central theme for reincarnation. So "running away" from ourself in essence means "leaving behind the past" to move towards a better future. So perhaps a more optimistic phrasing would be "running to" (although that would totally kill the visual)

Since I am a restless individual, lacking in patience (although I have aquired a significant patience these past few months, in recognition of the need) I first dealt with my lack of motivation by being confrontational (i.e. a complete ass) with my roommates. Thinking about it now, that initial approach is strikingly similar to Linkin Park's song "Breaking the Habit". From what I can tell, this journey I'm going through has an extremely close likeness that the journey that Linkin Park depicts in their music, so I often listen to the words of their songs for guidance. As the contributers (of that song) in Linkin Park did though, I realized that there were better ways of dealing with it, that I needed to 'break the habit'.

So I started settling down, and played games with them instead. Here I realized another way of self-treating depression. Summing it all up, a person's psychological health is primarily dependent on one factor- pride. This is why it's important to not play the victim- depression is caused by insecurity. The opposite of insecurity is self-control. Taking control of a situation is an active way of alleviating insecurity (and thus depression), but it's likely that in most cases of depression, the person's state-of-mind renders them incapable of taking the initiative- thus a passive response is necessary. By playing games with my roommates that I knew I would win, and by following through with that expectation, I am able to alleviate my insecurity in a passive manner. That is, it required no initiative, because they already wanted to play- I only had to say "yes". Thus, one of the best ways to alleviate depression passively, without initiative, is to put oneself in an environment where we will succeed, and have the expectations of others to drive and support that success.

With both the resume incident and the days that I played games to relieve depression, the key factor is power. In one way or another, empowering oneself plays a vital role in allowing us to move on. To put in another way, the most efficient way to get over depression is to "pet your ego" by showing off your strengths to others. Pride is, after all, one of our greatest needs as humans, making this a reliable "quick fix" for depression

Buying commodities right now is a little like stepping onto the tracks in front of the freight train barreling toward you, hoping it stops a few feet away so you can calmly step on just as it reverses and starts rumbling the other way. Yeah, that's going to happen. No pain, no gain, as they say.

I ponder these things as REAP moves me now a full 13.3% net long commodites exposure if you count the energy stocks. Today we went grocery shopping for grains and chased shiny things which turned out to be gold.

How about that market, eh? Nice sucker-punch to the head as we as we turn on our screens coming out of Labour Day, sun-tanned and all. It was enough to finally get a rise out of my Nasdaq short ETF, which contributed to our little gold purchase, and Rochester Medical stepped forward with a debonair "Allow me" to pay for HAU.

HAU has had an interesting ride that illustrates how well commodity ETFs contribute to the program. Here are its inital and then 6 REAP trades to date:

20 MAR OPEN $15.21
28 MAR ADD $16.41 (Two trades establish the initial position)
11 JUN SELL $18.86
03 JUL SELL $21.00 (The very day natural gas, and commodities basically, peaked)
21 JUL BUY $15.40 (Starting to buy)
06 AUG BUY $11.75 (Loading up)
21 AUG SELL $15.16 (Nice pop)
05 SEP BUY $11.39 (Re-load)

That kind of looks like buy-low/sell-high. Although admittedly I do have a few buy low, buy lower, buy again, buy even lower yet situations that I prefer not to talk about. Like I said, no pain ... :)

Speaking of pain, here's how we look after one week back from the summer with everyone in a seemingly pissy mood.

Today was a big swing. I was actuallyback in the red on the year late morning until the afternoon rally restored things a bit. I'm down on the week 2.5%, but gained slightly on the S&P500 by a fractional amount only astronomers can measure.

Now check out this hurricane map. See the two yellow bands titled "8AM SUN" and "8AM MON"? Now follow the red dotted line to the midpoint between them. That's where I'll be at 3PM on Sunday afternoon! - Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Did I mention two posts ago that I had a bad feeling about Hanna? :)

That's it for now.

INTERESTING FOOTNOTE
Historically important but lesser-known Greek philosophers generally knows as the "forgotten four" ...

Commodites - really invented leverage, but Archimedes got the credit; died broke
Spectacles - the first prima-donna; never got over Socrates being offered hemlock, and him not
Manacles - usually took the other side of democracy debates; by far the kinkiest (which says a lot in ancient Greece)
Testicles - excitable; more social than intellectual; hung around for a long time

Hi folks,

There seems to be a lot of confusion and misinformation going around right now and I'd like to clear some of it up before the weekend.

There is just something about teachers that I don’t understand. Well, a lot of things, I gue

There is just something about teachers that I don't understand. Well, a lot of things, I guess. But one main thing. They don't seem to be able to understand children. Why is that? Well, let me rephrase that. They don't seem to be able to understand teenagers. US.
Why is that?
Wait, HOW is that, is the better question.
Well, actually, this is just one teacher in general - the rest of them are great, just the ones is just....GGGGAAAAHHHHHHhhhhhh!!!!!!
Either way, let me explain.
In Government class (one that I SHOULD be in love with, because it's my sort of thing), we have to do these things that are called Current Events (we have to find an article from somewhere, that has to do with some form of Government or can be related to Government, and then we have to do a little write up on it, and then we have to share that with the class). Which, in itself, isn't so bad. I don't mind that sort of thing - other than the sharing with the class part, because that's not something I enjoy doing at all really. Either way, not that big of a deal, other than we have to do one once a week, and there's tests over them, blah blah blah. No big deal. The big deal is that the teacher is a retard when it comes to such things. He is forcing this information upon us in a way we don't find to be learnable. We don't retain any of this information, we don't take anything away from it, yet we have to do the damn things EVERY DAMN DAY. Well, as a class, they are done every day.
Takes up a good 15 minutes, at least, of our class time, every day.
Then, he has the stupidity....Oh my god, just thinking about it makes me angry.
So, we're in class, and my class is rather, how shall I say, obnoxious and loud and stuff. So, people are throwing things and he's totally unaware, talking to a student at the front of the classroom. And someone threw a box of tissues across the room, teacher didn't even see.
Oh, before I go on, it should be known that this is Mr. Mason, from last year, remember? Ya, he's still here, sad as that is.
Anyway, so then he gets to telling us about stuff that we're doing, and the current events. He knows that we don't like the things, and he should have expected an uproar - we are vocal like that (me included, of course- I go OFF on him like no other, it is great).
Anyway, he TOTALLY got pissed off about it. Was almost yelling at us, and you could just tell that he was done with it. He said that he didn't care if he was only telling two of us - the rest of us would be in the office. OOOoooooo...Scary dude, fucking scary. Sorry, but very rarely does he punish someone. So it makes it totally wrong when he does, because it takes so long for him to do it in the first place.
He doesn't care, according to my mom.
She's so right, because, you see, he doesn't care. He tries to get things done his way, and only his way. So the fact that he lets us be hellions, doesn't really help his case any. Makes no sense, actually. But he's allowed to do that, right? Cuz he's the teacher and all? I don't know, we'll see how many referrals he does this year.
He just doesn't know what DISCIPLINE is. Which is VERY BAD if you are a teacher. Especially when he lets us get away with as much as he does. He either has to let us have chaos all the time, or he has to have rules all the time. Not half and half, like he's got going now.
Stupid teacher.
And, Mr. Mason, if you ever read this, MY MOM SAYS YOU DON'T CARE (in reference to your teaching) AND I AGREE WITH HER - YOU DON'T GIVE A FUCK.
And if any of the staff at my school read this, you KNOW it's true. Damn straight, mother fuckers (but not literally mother fuckers, just a saying, you know).
