Well, I finally installed linux on my HP monster pc. AMD 64 x2 and Nvidia are hard as hell to configure it took me 2 days of manually editing text files -_-. I am enjoy fluxbox though and I backed up all my files on my old hdd and e-mailed the to myself. Btw folks, if you have text problems like a white line along the edges, adjust your monitor's gamma.

Anyways, my monstrous screen:

What ever happened to MXM?

Sure, there are notebooks available today that use this mobile video card format but can anyone real

Sure, there are notebooks available today that use this mobile video card format but can anyone really say that the concept has achieved success?

A few years ago when Nvidia and ATI launched MXM and Axiom there was reason to be excited. One of the key reasons that notebooks lagged desktops was that they were a dead end in many ways - most had their CPUs and GPUs soldered to the motherboard. These new card formats would make the GPU upgradable.

Today, socketed CPUs are common. Axiom is gone, but MXM modules abound. You would never know this though. Many notebooks designs effectively lock the MXM module by hiding it away from access panels. This diminishes the likleyhood of users attempting upgrades. The Toshiba A300 is an example of this.

Another issue is the lack of add in boards. Users looking to upgrade have to seek out a small number of vendors who sell the MXM boards. Its up to the user to educate themselves on the three form factors and to research what video bios works on their hardware. The upgrades are typically not supported - even if you use a module from your vendor. Recently I reviewed the Acer Aspire 6920G and it fell into this category.

Compatibility seems to be broken on a regular basis too. Whether its the heat interface or the electronics, it seems very few people who bought MXM compatible notebooks one generation ago have the ability to upgrade to today's GPUs. I am thinking specifically of people who bought Dell XPS 17" notebooks. Those would still be viable gaming systems with an Nvidia 9800m GT GPU.

I guess the point of this post is to remind you not to get hung up on a feature like MXM. Most future proofing features are of dubious value. In future reviews I will point out wheather this feature is present and list compatible modules - clearly pointing out when none exist.

The iPhone-like touchscreen phones are coming at us fast and furious. And while the Storm doesn't look to be the mythical "iPhone killer" that folks like to talk about, it's the most interesting iPhone rival from a hardware standpoint.

A BlackBerry Without Keys
Confession time: When I first heard about the possibility of a touchscreen BlackBerry, I was super-skeptical. It sounded like an iPhone wannabee--and what's a BlackBerry without tiny plastic keys? But the BlackBerry Storm, which will be available on Verizon "soon," is clearly more than a boring iPhone clone, and it doesn't represent an abandonment of the things that make a BlackBerry a BlackBerry. When you use the on-scren keyboard, the screen depresses slightly and provides haptic feedback to simulate real keypresses; the phone works on Verizon's excellent network in the U.S. and does GSM almost everywhere else; it includes Documents to Go's full suite of Office-compatible editing tools rather than plain document viewers. I still haven't laid hands on a Storm, but I'm looking forward to doing so--even though I'm afraid it'll beat the long-overdue BlackBerry Bold, which I'm even more excited about, to market.

Apple Notebooks: Rumor This Week, Reality Next Week
On the Apple front, the week began with a rumor about a rumor: that the supposed Apple project codenamed "Brick" was not a product, but an amazing new manufacturing process for carving notebook cases out of solid blocks of aluminum. Next came fuzzy spy photos of what were said to be new MacBook cases. Then bloggers began to question whether the much buzzed about Apple portable event on October 14th would be a go. And then Apple invited press and analysts to...a portable event on October 14th. Possibly featuring an $800 MacBook. Whew! Technologizer will cover the Apple event live from Cupertino. but it can't possibly keep us busier than this week's scuttlebutt did. And hey, it'll all be true, for sure.

Are Two AMDs Better Than One?
Anyone who loves underdogs has gotta have a soft spot for AMD: Through decades of ups and downs, the scrappy CPU company has been the only true competitor to the far larger Intel. It's also been one of the few chip companies that both designs and manufactures its processors. But AMD made a long-standing rumor official this week: With the help of investments from Abu Dhabi, it will split into a chip-design company and a chip manufacturer. The move will mark the end of the longest rivalry in CPUs--well, not the end, really, but the start of a new chapter. Should consumers care? Yup--they should hope that the two new companies partner to make next-generation chips in a nimble, cost-efficient fashion that not only keeps the race with Intel alive but quickens it.

YouTube is Looking More Like the Boob Tube
There was a time when some pundits declared that short-form user-generated content of the sort that YouTube made famous would render the longer, profesional programming on the big TV networks and cable channels irrelevant. Maybe someday, but YouTube has struck a deal with CBS to put old fashioned TV on YouTube, including Star Trek, Beverly Hills 90210, Californication, and other shows. They're the longest items ever on YouTube, and possibly the most nakedly commercial efforts ever associated with YouTube parent company Google, at least in terms of presentation--there will be ads before, during, and after the shows. And it all sets YouTube up for more direct competition with Hulu, the all-professional video hub that's a joint venture between NBC and Rupert Murdoch's News Corp.

Yet Another New Ask.com
The most famous change Ask.com ever made was when it dumped its butler mascot and the name Ask Jeeves. But the smallest of the big search engines does more major makeovers more often than its larger rivals, and it's rolled out yet another one. The new Ask.com dumps much of what made last year's Ask.com upgrade distinctive in favor a look and feel that's certainly functional, but less strikingly different than that of Google.

Amid worried reports, Intel is not looking to sue AMD on patent violation, after the Sunnyvale, Cali

Amid worried reports, Intel is not looking to sue AMD on patent violation, after the Sunnyvale, Calif., company decided to split-up into a fabless design house and a foundry. At least not yet!

"Unlike what was said, we're not afraid of anything [Intel was said to be afraid over its X86 patent rights over the AMD deal]. We're just trying to understand the nature of the deal to see what happens to our patents", said Intel's spokesperson Chuck Mulloy in a recent conversation I had at Intel's headquarters in Santa Clara, Calif.

Intel has a broad patent license agreement for its X86 instruction set with AMD since 1976. The last one was signed in 1996 and expires at the end of next year. That contract is available online but some parts remain confidential and were redacted out of the document.

"We've suggested to AMD to publish the agreements in its entirety but AMD refused. And that's there right to do so. But that's also why I can't talk about what are our clear concerns regarding this case", added Mulloy.

Intel main concerns are about ensuring protection over the secrecy and the intellectual property of its "strategic" X86 instruction set and its architecture as, if this was widely available, could let anyone build X86 compatible chips without paying a penny to Intel.

"And right now, AMD is paying us a royalty", confirmed the Intel spokesman.

Intel is waiting for AMD to publish its proxy statement - probably in the next weeks or so - with more details about the split-up agreement before engaging in more serious talk.

AMD's fab spin-off called The Foundry Company might be interested in getting Nvidia onto its customer list. The first focus of course is ATI graphics and if they remain with some unused capacity they might Invite Nvidia to join in as a customer.
This won't happen overnight but we are quite sure that The Foundry Company will ask for less money than well established TSMC and this would potentially mean more money for the graphics card vendors such as Nvidia.

The potential obstacle would naturally be the industry espionage as its highly unlikely that someone from The Foundry Company wouldn’t actually talk to its AMD fellows that they successful taped out Nvidia's first chip and such information is usually worth gold in this market.

TSMC is not better here as once ATI tapes out a chip, Nvidia knows about it almost instantly about it and vice versa. We believe that bulk at The Foundry Company is about two years away from now and for Nvidia, probably even further.

A few days ago i installed Konqueror on a Ubuntu 64bit machine, upon request.

The installation went smooth (why not?). The issue came up while attempting to get Flash and Java to work.
The workaround was fairly simple.

Java
After installing Java, the trick is done by giving Konqueror the absolute path of the executable:

Konqueror -> Settings ->Configure Konqueror -> Java & Javascript

and set (in my case) to /usr/bin/java

Flash

Open a shell window and type:

sudo apt-get install konqueror-nsplugins flashplugin-nonfree

Konqueror -> Settings ->Configure Konqueror -> Plugins.->Scan for new plugins

Restart Konqueror.

Two posts in one day! Well, sort of, I guess. It is past midnight after all.

Anyway, to the point: I'm sure you've all heard hilarious stories of idiotic tech support people not knowing what they're doing or the idiotic customers who call tech support but don't have clue what they need to tell them to fix their problem.

Well, here's my story, in short: I recently purchased a new video card for my PC, the HIS Radeon HD 4850 1GB - if you don't know what any of that means, just know it is a very decent card to own as of the date of this posting. Anyway, I also use Windows Vista 64 bit (aka Windows Vista x64) which still has some kinks to be worked out.

So I install the card, install the drivers, and things seem to be hunky dory for the first day or so. Then I get a series of BSODs (blue screens of death; error windows that all versions of windows are infamous for displaying), culminating in a error window that says my display adapter failed and was successfully restarted, at which point my PC cycles indefinitely between that error screen, a blank black screen, and my desktop. Only rebooting my PC stops the madness, but it comes back eventually.

Peturbed that I cannot yet use my video card with ease of mind, I went to the AMD/ATI support website and submitted a ticket, during the course of which, I was asked specifically for information like my operating system and type of video card and variety.

Right off the bat, I noticed their drop down selection for operating system included Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Windows XP 64 bit, but did not include my Windows Vista 64 bit OS as an option. So I chose the closest match (Windows Vista).

Then I see that they don't have my exact video card in the drop down selection for video card variety. So I choose "Other Card" and type in my problem, then submit the ticket.

About an hour later, Thunderbird throws out its tone for notifying me of a new email and I promptly open it up and follow a link in an email from ATI tech support, thinking, "wow, that was fast."

I am sent to an informational support page for my problem that is not helpful at all for two major reasons: First, it for Windows XP users, not Windows Vista users. Secondly, it is for those with AGP video cards, not those like me using PCI Express video cards.

So after all that, they linked me to an online support page that has absolutely no relevance to my PC configuration whatsoever. I immediately email them to inform them of their inaptitude in responding to my request, and well, the rest is history.

It's just amazingly crazy how stupid things like this can happen on such a regular basis...

The Foundry Company.

AMD announced Tuesday that it would split into two companies, one focusing on processor design, another is in charge of production. AMD, Intel's only real competitor, is split in order to better compete with Intel. Both the Abu Dhabi Investment Company will spin-off after the two companies to invest at least 6,000,000,000 U.S. dollars of funds. Most of the investment will be used for the construction of the original AMD plans to Albany in the vicinity of a new chip factory in Germany, as well as upgrading the existing plant in Dresden. The new company was named for the time being Foundry Company, AMD will hold a 44.4 percent stake in one of the remaining shares by the holders of ATI.

Due to the development of more sophisticated semiconductor components required for the huge investment, the semiconductor industry has been in Intel's monopoly status. In addition, due to the continuous updating of production technology, chip manufacturers will face greater financial volatility. According to AMD reported, as by the end of June, it carried a huge debt. In order to develop the design of smaller, faster, more energy-efficient chips compete with Intel, AMD had to seek external assistance. AMD expects the deal will be completed in early 2009. The transaction must be both shareholder and regulatory agencies in the United States and Germany approved by the officials.

Foundry not only for the production of AMD processors, manufacturers can also produce other processors. AMD will be a large number of such manufacturers to compete with those companies, mainly from Asia, mainly from the production of other companies design chips products. Spin-off is not an easy task. According to AMD's proposed transaction showed that the program, which will retain the current production plant many of the traditional interests of the Foundry as part of the production capacity of specialized services for AMD, and that part of the business and will work with AMD's technical engineers have maintained close communication.

Πιο συγκεκριμένα, η AMD ανακοίνωσε την δημιουργία μιας νέας εταιρείας, που προσωρινά έχει την ονομασία "The Foundry Company" και θα αποτελεί μια κοινοπραξία μεταξύ των ATIC (Advanced Technology Investment Company) και AMD (Advanced Micro Devices).

Better than a Burka

U.S. chip maker Advanced Micro Devices Inc plans to spin off its manufacturing plants into a $5.7 billion joint venture with Abu Dhabi to get a cash injection and shrink debt to better compete against larger rival Intel Corp.

Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC), an Abu Dhabi state-owned venture capital firm, said it will invest $2.1 billion for a 55.6 percent stake in the venture, of which $700 million will go directly to AMD, which will hold the remaining stake. The two will divide the venture's board seats equally.

ATIC also committed to investing another $3.6 billion to $6.0 billion over 5 years to fund the venture's expansion. The 3,000-person new company will hold AMD's two plants in Dresden, Germany and make all of its central processing units, as well as chips for other companies.

Another Abu Dhabi government company, Mubadala Development Co, will spend $314 million to increase its stake in AMD to 19.3 percent from 8.1 percent and gain a seat on AMD's board.

Brian Mata, an analyst at IC Insights in Arizona, said AMD desperately needed the boost. The company has posted seven consecutive quarters of losses and is forecast by Wall Street to report another quarterly loss next week...

The venture will upgrade one of the two plants in Dresden and build the plant in New York to the latest technology standards, AMD said. It said the venture, which will be on AMD's balance sheet, may ultimately build a fab in Abu Dhabi.

Now, there's a surprise - an American corporation relying on foreign capital and building manufacturing facilities abroad to better fit a global market.

Premiere CS4 as well

We spoke with AMD about ATI’s potential ability to accelerate Photoshop CS4 and Premiere CS4 effects on a GPU and we were right about that lead.

ATI has confirmed that Radeon HD 4000 and HD 3000 series will help accelerate many things in Adobe's Creative Suite 4 pack.

ATI Radeon HD 4000 will accelerate Premiere and in Nvidia's case, you need an ultra expensive Quadro for that. This makes a big difference and ATI told Fudzilla that HD 3000 series will help accelerate video transcoding that will lead to faster video editing. 3D effects and transition, something that you use regularly in video edition are also accelerated on the GPU. ATI HD 4000 series might definitely sell well in this video editing market as you pay a fraction of the price of Quadro and still get the acceleration. It will be fun to compare Nvidia vs ATI on this particular application set.

Photoshop CS4 extended is also accelerated on both Radeon HD 4000 and 3000 series. Both cards will help accelerate image and 3D model previewing including panning, zooming and rotation. ATI can accelerate 3D manipulations on photos (map an image onto a 3D object such as a sphere for example).

The less widespread, professionally oriented After Effects CS4 is also heavily accelerated on HD 4000 and HD 3000 cards. ATI’s GPU will help accelerate 3D effects in films, video and DVD editing in this popular video post processing package.

We were quite surprised to hear all this as ATI didn’t make a lot of noise about this and we’ve heard that even Photoshop CS3 gets accelerated by some ATI cards. After all it looks that AMD has a very strong relationship with Adobe but this was something that AMD failed to pass through.
