Trains have been a popular subject in Hard Rock for years. In 1974, "Train Kept a Rollin" for Aerosmith", In 1980, Ozzy Osbourne gave us the "Crazy Train", 1987 brought us Guns 'N Roses' "Nightrain".  In 1989 Badlands offered up "Rumblin' Train", in 1997 Judas Priest unleashed "Bullet Train" and in 2006, Black Stone Cherry gave us "Lonely Train".

By now I am sure you have heard AC/DC's new single "Rock 'N Roll Train".  It has been a hot topic on the internet.  It is getting airplay on radio stations everywhere.  What do you think of the new song?  Will you buy AC/DC's new CD Black Ice?!

If Wolfmother is the crazed, hyper-active love child of Led Zeppelin, ACDC, Black Sabbath and Uriah Heep, then the Sunshine Coast 4-piece VEYA is the result of some serious sexy-time between the ‘Mother and, say, At The Drive-In.

It’s a sound that seems acknowledge the direction that the rock market is currently moving in, while at the same time longing for the riff-a-licious, solo-happy days of yore. It’s the sort of instantly marketable sound that makes you wonder if there is an astute producer or manager behind the scenes, steering the band towards the money.

But after one listen to Slanted City, any such thoughts are immediately banished. VEYA’s new 6-track EP smacks of independence and passion, ideologically reminiscent of the sheer fury of The Sex Pistols, with a Ramones-ian habit of being known only by their first names. This vitality, coupled with raw, unadorned recordings leaves you in no doubt that these boys are doing their own thing.

The music is remarkably tight and accomplished for a band of teenagers, with the drum and bass partnership of Skot and Leon seemingly telepathically linked, driving the songs with a furious energy. On top of this is Eddy’s seriously impressive guitar work. Each track could be an audition tape for Guitar Hero III, complete with classic riffs and blistering, perfectly-structured solos that recall a bygone era while still managing to sound fresh and interesting.

The one area where this album falls out is on the only soft track, Come Home. While the guitar part is very sweet, the lyrics doesn’t do it justice. The chorus "nothing can scare me/more than the army has already done" is not exactly Shakespeare, and the vocals during the bridge are strained, and slightly painful to listen to. And while Veya can hardly be accused of being the only band in the world singing with a fake American accent, it never sounds good.

Generally though, Dominic’s vocals match the urgency of the music, with a current, vaguely emo sound to it. This isn’t meant as a derogatory term, despite the current penchant for emo-bashing in music media. However, it must be said that Dom’s rock and roll wail needs a little bit of work. His upper register isn’t particularly strong, but for the most part this simply adds to the unrelenting energy of a band that seems desperate to speak their piece.

Such situations may not be lethal, but trust me, they can be pressurizing! :D

Thankfully the single rocks. It's pure AC/DC as it's main focus is preaching about Rock'n'Roll. This band is never known for great lyrics, just hard riffs and Angus Young antics. There is no video for it just yet but you can hear the single now at ACDC.com.

Anyway, apart from drooling over AC/DC, I explored the far end of the National Mall today. For the first time in about four weeks at least, I was faced with a properly massive rainstorm this morning. So after breakfast, at which I continued the Obama arguments I'd been having with the Aussie girl who'd joined us downstairs for the Convention yesterday evening, I grabbed my umbrella and set off. I stopped first in the International Spy Museum (another one of the exceptions that charges for entry), and had great fun examining all the various devices used (mainly by the CIA and KGB) to conceal weapons, bugs and cameras throughout the ages, as well as reading the features on the Cambridge spies (which brought back six-year-old memories of Another Country), McCarthyism and various other double agents. From there, and I was glad to see that during my spy exploit the rain had completely stopped, I headed to the Capitol, where a large knowledgable tour guide took us round the architectural 'bare bones' of the old buildings and locations of Congress (including the famous 'whisper chamber' effect in the old Senate hall). That seen, I went past the Supreme Court to the Library of Congress (which I remember well from National Treasure 2!), but was disappointed to find that all the interesting parts (i.e. the books) required me to be a member of the Library, so I had to content myself with a few hasty photos while the warders had their backs turned. I was going to look into the Botanical Gardens as well, but wasn't really in the mood for looking at piles of self-satisfied plants, so headed past the White House (which I won't be able to visit, since I'm unlikely to be able to "make a booking six months in advance with your local member of Congress") back to the hostel, briefly venturing out again to stock up on drinks at the nearest 7/11.

My camera is down to 280 photos remaining (already), so I will now upload what I have to my laptop, and from there onto Facebook before long. Then, perhaps, I will be able to finish the blasted Olympics stuff I've been trying (and mostly failing) to watch over the last few days before tuning into Obama's speech to the Convention in a few hours' time.

AC/DC have a new single from their upcoming Black Ice record up on their website, and damn if it isn't the best thing they've put out in 15 years. Now why, you might ask, is a self-professed music nerd like myself so excited about AC/DC. And not old, classic AC/DC, but 30-plus years into their career AC/DC. The answer is because I love them. I love them so much. They are my favourite band of all time. I have loved them since I was 10, and their 1996 Ballbreaker tour was the first show I ever saw - it's still the best stadium rock show I've ever seen. No other band can hold a candle to AC/DC live because as much as they are a schtick, and a bit of a joke, they get the joke, and love it, so it makes it okay to just go with it (kind of like Snoop Dogg) and enjoy the fact that they have a row of canons for the 21 gun salute in "For Those About to Rock We Salute You." I don't even give a shit that they've set up an exclusive distro deal with Wal-Mart. As far as I'm concerned they've never made a bad album (even Fly on the Wall), and they never will.
