As a user of the original iPhone in Canada, where there is no support for the first gen device, i was eagerly awaiting the hack to upgrade to the new 2.0 software.  I have previously used Ziphone to unlock the iPhone, so i had zero experience with the Pwnage Tool.  But from reading the comments on the Dev Team's site, it was a breeze to get through the process.  The program creates a custom iPhone restore file and allows to 'restore' the phone via iTunes to carry out the process.  It was very simple, although i had to backtrack a few times and repeat a few of the steps.  This was due to my error, not that of the program.  As i said, through the comment section on the release page, i was able to get through this rather painless process and i now have the 2.0 software up and running with access to the App store and all the tweaked and updated software.

Check it out if you are interested in bringing your 1.1.x devices up to speed, you'll be glad you did!

Após a instalação do Firmware 2.0, as minhas impressões:

- A compra em si foi bem rápida, sem problemas. O Firmware tem 222MBe dependendo da conexão, demora um pouquinho.

- A parte chata: a instalação demorou demais!!! Pediu pra restaurar não sei quantas vezes! Como sou paciente, sobrevivi... Para os mais inquietos, recomendo fazer outra coisa durante o processo ;P

- Firmware instalado e Touch reiniciado! Agora é só desfrutar da parte divertida. Há aplicações para todos os gostos. Mesmo as gratuitas são bem interessantes.

Agora mais do que nunca, o iPod Touch é um iPhone que não "fala" meeeeeeeesmo!!!

 OBS: A Apple disponibilizou uma atualização (1.1.5) pra quem não quer (ou não pode) comprar a 2.0. São apenas correções, ou seja, uma atualização clássica.

Les premières nouvelles, à ce sujet, montrent diverses variations sur un même thème.  Selon que l'on visite les sites de Corus Nouvelles (Info 690 AM, 98,5 FM), de Radio-Canada, ou encore de Cyberpresse, on parlera de dommages à des voitures qui ont roulé dans l'énorme nid-de-poule, ou qui ont reçu une pluie de béton.  Il n'en demeure pas moins que la chute de ces morceaux de l'une des bretelles illustre très bien l'état de décrépitude de l'échangeur en entier.  Au point où je me demande s'il va tenir le coup en attendant sa reconstruction, qui devrait être complétée en 2015.

Il s'agit de regarder, lorsque l'on arrive de l'autoroute Décarie, la bretelle qui mène vers l'autoroute Bonaventure (A-15 sud, A-20 est), vers le pont Champlain; les travées "font le rond", d'un pilier à l'autre, comme s'il s'agissait d'un vieux pont de bois!  Personne ne me convaincra que ces voies surélevées sont solides.  On roule là-dessus, mais c'est continuellement à nos risques et périls.  Autre point; je me demande si la partie qui s'est effondrée, ce matin, devait ou non être retenue, en principe, par ces fameux trellis métalliques, installés un peu partout sous les parties surélevées du réseau routier québécois.

La prochaine étape, ce sera quoi, selon vous?  La chute d'une partie de la Métropolitaine?

1. It is a mac only app for the moment. Either go borrow your mates computer for an afternoon or slip in to an Apple store and use one of theirs!

3. It won't unlock a 3G iPhone

At the moment, installing the 2.0 firmware on your 1st gen iPhone will not give you support for our very loved old friend, Installer. It does however give us access to Apple's shiny AppStore which has newer versions of most of the gadgets we know and love.

I found my copy of the Pwnage tool as a torrent, but I'm sure hundreds of people have mirrored it over the web by now. You really shouldn't have any trouble finding it. The supporting files you also need to grab are pretty easy to find too. I simply let iTunes download the freaking mammoth 220MB iPhone 2.0 firmware ipsw file, and found the other parts using the Google-searches built in to the application.

Once everything was together I fired up Pwnage and tried to get it all working. It found the ipsw OK, found the other required files and compiled the new ipsw without any hassles. When it came to loading it all on to the iPhone however, it all fell apart.

The error that everyone has been googling since the tool was released: "Failed to enter DFU mode"

The fix for this was difficult to find. There are hundreds of posts out there from people trying to find answers, but very few useful solutions. However, the solution is a simple one:

Fire up Terminal on your Mac and fire of these two commands:

cd ~/Library/iTunes
mkdir "Device Support"

No idea why creating a directory fixes the problem, but it does. Now off you go, go grab some shiny new apps from the AppStore!!

I have already upgraded my 1st gen iPhone to the 2.0 software, and used Pwnage Tool 2.0 to unlock/jailbreal/activate it. It worked like a charm, the first time, and I have had no major issues yet. This is truely a great piece of software. It is currently only available for Mac OS X, but a Windows version is coming. The new tool is very easy to use with step by step procedures to doing the unlock. It even helps get your iPhone into DFU mode. (this can get trickiy!!).
