It's with some film grump shame that I admit my experience with Alfred Hitchcock is limited. My early exposure to film was basically limited to what my dad thought was good and entertaining, thus my history with all manners of sci-fi, from 2001: A Space Odyssey to Deep Star Six. Once I became independent enough to pursue my own interests (Netflix lol) I began to culture myself in the filmmakers I wanted to see/thought I should see. Hitchcock wasn't far from the top of the list. I'd only ever seen one of his films before, Rebecca, with Film Walrus and had a blast. It was an excellent movie with far-reaching influence, a fantastically twisted and layered story and even better acting. So I was definitely stoked to dive into the presumably warm waters of Hitchcock's other work.

But was that really the case?

I started with Vertigo, since aside from Psycho it was the film I most associated with the director. It started with an incredibly cool title sequence with trippy visuals and a fantastic overture by Bernard Herrmann. I was SO fucking pumped to be wowed by the movie. But I ended up being underwhelmed by it after having to stretch out watching it over two nights because of how sleepy it made me.

Vertigo is about a former police detective (James Stewart) who left the force after his partner fell to his death while chasing a criminal over rooftops. During that incident he discovers he's afflicted with vertigo, which the movie seems to define as a fear of heights. (Let's not even get into the technicalities of this, shall we?) After that, he's hired by an old friend from school to trail his wife, whom has been behaving very oddly as of late. She's been acting as if possessed, disappearing with her car for hours on end with no memory of where she's been and what she's done. Skeptical, Stewart reluctantly agrees to follow her. During this period of observation, he sees her obsessed with a painting of her great-grandmother that hangs in a museum and witnesses her jump off a cliff into the San Francisco Bay. He jumps after her and saves her, beginning their attraction towards each other that ends in tragedy.

That's all I can describe without spoiling the plot twists, which might be the only reason to see the movie. The rest of it is so fucking dull. Most of the first half is taken up by quiet passages of Stewart tailing the dame in his car or on foot with nothing but the Herrmann score to carry it. The plot tries to build up a sense of mystery, but it just never becomes dense enough to lift up the bloated running time. Did this movie REALLY need to be over two hours long?

A lot of this movie hinges on the central romance between Stewart and his love interest, the "possessed" wife. And I can't enjoy the movie very much when I don't enjoy that. I just found their relationship tiresome at first. Kim Novak, the actress playing the love interest, is sort of pretty in that generic Old Hollywood actress way, but doesn't bring a whole lot of personality and charisma to her role. She seems like a zombie for most of the first half. And Stewart... I'm not used to seeing him look so old. Apparently, Hitchcock blamed Stewart's age for the critical and commercial failure of the film and stopped working with him. A bit harsh, but I see where he was coming from. It doesn't help that their romance just takes on an unnerving and disgusting tone in the second half that barely makes me want to call it a romance at all. I realize that's what Hitchcock was going for, but it was just really unpalatable to me. What was much more interesting to me was the tension between Stewart and his "Girl Friday," Midge, whom he shares a few scenes with. They had a shared romantic past that had some interesting stuff going on with it, but as Stewart becomes more obsessed with Novak, she sort of gets put to the side and forgotten about. Tsk.

I suppose my problem with Vertigo is that it hardly ever comes alive. Its whole "thing" is a sort of detached, eerie, haunting quietness with lots of repetition that isn't a good vehicle for 2+ hours sitting in front of a TV waiting for something extraordinary to happen. Which isn't to say it never does. The famous staircase scene with the now legendary "contra-zoom" vertigo effect was a welcome breath of, I dunno, TENSION. There's also a splendidly spooky (I'd almost say Lynch-esque if it wasn't decades before him) nightmare sequence about two-thirds of the way into the film that rekindled my interest, however briefly. I mean, I guess for a suspense movie it did keep me on the edge of my seat... waiting for something to happen. :|

So it was with trepidation I approached the next film on my queue, North by Northwest. I knew pretty much nothing about it aside from the fact it was another famous Hitchcock film. But now that didn't mean much to me. If Vertigo was so lauded, I couldn't trust anyone on him anymore. Eventually, after a few weeks of dawdling, I buckled down and sat down determined to give North by Northwest a fair shot. And once again the movie entranced me with its incredibly cool title sequence and amazing theme song, again by Herrmann. I was so pumped up to see the movie by the end of it that I nearly missed poor Mr. Hitchcock being denied his bus. {:3

North by Northwest is about an ad exec (Cary Grant) who, while out minding his own business, gets kidnapped by some thugs. Apparently he's been confused with some sort of spy, and his captors assume all his attempts at denying this are part of his game. After a failed attempt at killing him (but ruining his reputation), Grant is put on the run trying to clear his name from being implicated in an assassination of a U.N. worker. While slipping aboard a train, he meets the lovely Eva Marie Saint, whom he immediately charms into bed helping him slip by police and track down the actual spy he's supposedly being confused with. His enemies are hot on his tail, however, and he must outmaneuver their attempts at killing him before he can uncover the truth.

Holy fuck, if ever there was an opposite to the banality of Vertigo, it's this. The premise simultaneously sends up Cold War espionage flicks while at the same time one-upping them in terms of twists and set pieces. Grant is an inimitable leading man, and his generous charisma oozes off of the screen at all times. It makes total sense that Eva Marie Saint is in the palm of his hand (or is it vice-versa?) within minutes of meeting each other. Or it might just have to do with the fact that the movie is packed with crackling, pithy dialogue that no real person is ever witty enough to think up or well-timed enough to deliver. I also found a certain satisfaction in seeing Grant blunder his way out of sticky situations, especially since basically everything he thought of was something I would also resort to doing if I were in the same circumstance. (Great minds think alike!)

The action set pieces are also brilliant. The really famous sequence, the crop duster attack, works even if it's been spoiled for you. Hell, ESPECIALLY if you know it's coming. The movie plops Grant in the middle of barren corn fields with no one around for miles, waiting for a contact that the viewer knows will never arrive. Cars whiz by until another man walks up. Grant strikes up a conversation, hoping it's the guy he's waiting for, but it isn't. They talk innocuously until the man notes that it's odd that there's a crop duster in the background... considering there's no crops to dust. The man goes on his way and Grant continues standing there like a fool. The crop duster starts flying towards him and it isn't until it's nearly upon him that he realizes, "Fuck, it's trying to kill me" and flings himself to the ground to try to save his life. MMMMFFF, that's good. I can't even do it proper justice in words. Same goes for the thrilling climax at Mt. Rushmore.

The cinematography deserves special mention. I wish I'd taken screenshots before returning it because there's some really striking shots in this movie. There seemed to be a sort of modern art feel that Hitchcock was going for, and there are a few instances where he transforms the shots themselves into pieces of art that the characters run around in.

Of course Cary Grant is superb in this movie and Eva Marie Saint is both beautiful and talented in her role, unlike Kim Novak in Vertigo. Their pairing makes total sense and the screen lights up with the sparks that fly when they're together. Also deserving of kudos are James Mason and a shockingly youthful Martin Landau as the villains. Seriously, I just could not get over how young he looked. There are certain actors you are just always used to seeing as haggard, melting old men. Like Maggie Gyllenhaal.

The worst thing I could say about this movie is that it seemed to have some sort of allergic reaction to filming on location. They'll be filming in a train station or whatever and then the camera will cut and we'll see the actors walking in front of one of those screens they used in old movies for driving scenes. They do this multiple times whenever there's an outdoor shot in the movie and it slightly cheapens the production. There's also the personal pet peeve of filming scenes during the day and trying to make it look like night. Like, I get really annoyed when movies have things "movie dark" instead of how things would actually look in reality if things were dark. The next time you watch a movie, you'll notice it when they cheat and make things incredibly light so the viewer can see things.

Also I think Hitchcock was allergic to falling action or something. Both movies end, like, mere seconds after the climax. It's just "LOL THE MOVIE'S OVER GO HOME NOW." Let a brotha down more gently, Hitchcock.

I really don't think I could have two more opposite reactions to movies. Especially when these movies were produced only a year apart. Vertigo would have been more honestly titled Narcolepsy for how drowsy it made me. On the other hand, North by Northwest was purely invigorating. In all honesty, though, I must say that even though I disliked Vertigo, it certainly did stay in my mind after I saw it, albeit against my wishes. It leaves an impression, even if it's not a particularly fond one. Any Hitchcock buffs out there want to enlighten me on what I was supposed to take away from Vertigo? Or how North by Northwest is populist trash that pales in comparison to Vertigo's perfection? Leave me a message at the top of the stairs.

Arthur Penn’s “The Left Handed Gun” is a James Dean film without James Dean. The angst, tormented, misunderstood youth Dean portrayed in “Rebel without a Cause” and “East of Eden” is all here. This role was originally scheduled for James Dean who died in the well-documented car crash on September 11, 1955. Paul Newman who at this point in his career was looked at as a Marlon Brando/James Dean wanna be was selected to replace Dean as his previously did in “Somebody up There Likes Me”. Based on a television play by Gore Vidal, Newman play’s Billy the Kid as a tormented misunderstood, inarticulate, hot headed, and resentful youth whose one father figure, the English cattleman John Tunstall, was gun-down in cold blood by a crooked sheriff and his deputies. This was the start of the famed Lincoln County war. While based on fact this is a highly fictionalized version of the conflict, one example is Tunstall who is portrayed as an older man so he could represent a father figure to Billy was less than a month shy of twenty-five when he was killed.

Billy is hell bent on revenge, one by one taking the life of each of the four men who killed John Tunstall in cold blood. Along the way, he meets Pat Garrett (John Dehner) who befriends Billy but warns him against seeking revenge against the killers especially after an amnesty was issued by the governor for all the killing during the Lincoln County War. However, Billy has a narrow vision and even after promising Pat Garrett that he would not cause any trouble on his Wedding day, guns down the last of Tunstall’s killers.

Penn already displays some of the themes that would be prevalent in his later work, the outlaw as a sympathetic anti-authority figure, the breakdown of myths and sudden unexpected violence breaking out causing pandemonium. Also, notable is the use of actor Denver Pyle who portrayed Texas Ranger Frank Hamer in “Bonnie & Clyde” and here plays a deputy sheriff, who kills one of Billy’s gang (James Best) before being shot gunned to death himself by Billy. Penn loves outsiders and continued to portray them throughout his career in films like “Bonnie and Clyde“, “Alice’s Restaurant” and “Little Big Man .” He has also taken film genres and given them a revisionist look , The P.I. in “Night Moves”, the gangster film in “Bonnie and Clyde” and of course the western in “Little Big Man”, “The Missouri Breaks” and “The Left Handed Gun.”

Paul Newman’s portrays Billy as inarticulate, uneducated with a boyish charm (Newman charm to be more accurate). He is sometime over the top and actually gave a better performance as the inarticulate, uneducated with boyish charm, Rocky Graziano in the 1956 film “Somebody up There Likes Me.” Newman was just becoming a major star at this time and would go on to become an even bigger star and a better actor as his career progressed. John Dehner is okay as Pat Garrett, though I did find both James Best and James Congdon as Billy’s two gang members unconvincing.

“The Left Handed Gun” is a flawed film that is more interesting than most successful works, unique in its vision in a decade known for its bland conformity.

Prodotto: Brandy Stock 84
Agenzia: ----
Produzione: Cinetelevisione
Anno: 1957
Autori: Eros Macchi (regista); Carlo Manzoni (sceneggiatore, soggettista, autore del personaggio); Pino Peserico (produttore)
Attori: Macario, Giulio Marchetti

So, your in the 1950's and your name is Conway Twitty? Well, you wouldn't want to rock up to your first day at college with a name like that would you? So it would be quite surprising if you knew he changed his name to that, from Harold Jenkins? Ah the good ole 50's i tell you. So fess up ..... How many of you have had a pompadour hmmm? Last living person i knew who had a head of hair like that was the lead singer out of Dread Zepplin (and I'm sure that's just a stage act ~ i hope)

What a sezzy Pompadour not

It reminds me of, say, "Christine" the movie about a homicidal spiteful evil car (written by Stephen King, i would love to see Christine kill the VW "Herbie" take that Disney!) Also this music reminds me of the soundtrack "American Graffiti" and that album from 1973 was a huge influence to me back then, Platters, Crests, Del Shannon, Booker T, etc, to be honest, is just tremendous music. Its like a time capsule in a two LP format! Damn, i wish i still had a phonograph. OK that's me, I'm off to Ebay for a sniff ... maybe even a wig and leather jacket! Heyyyyyyy, Fonizie ... wasssssssup.

When Conway Twitty died unexpectedly from an abdominal aneurysm just short of his 60th birthday in 1993, many of the testimonials and eulogies that followed noted that in country music circles he'd long been reverently known as "The best friend a song ever had." In part, it was a nod towards the deep-voiced singer's uncanny ability to reach, and then convey, the emotions at the heart of any composition, be it his own or another songwriter's. But it was also a nod to some stunning commercial facts: at the time of his passing, Twitty had racked up a remarkable forty #1 Country hits-a total that, over a decade later, was still standing as the all-time record. It's a daunting legacy, and an instructive one-testament to one artist's hard-fought belief in, and understanding of, himself, his music and his audience.

Born in Friars Point, Mississippi and raised there and in Helena, Arkansas as Harold Jenkins (his stage name was appropriated from the towns of Conway, Arkansas and Twitty, Texas), Conway Twitty had spent nearly ten years on the roller coaster ride of fame and fortune as a rock and roll and pop singer when, with his career appearing well on the down side of standstill, he was signed by producer Owen Bradley to the Nashville-based country division of Decca Records in 1965. Emerging from the Army after serving his country during the Korean War, Twitty had made his recording debut like many a southern singer in the mid-1950s-as a ducktail-coiffed, hip-shaking rockabilly cat inspired by and modelled after Elvis Presley. And, befitting a background in which popularity had come relatively easily-as a teen, he performed on local radio, and was enough of a standout high school athlete to be scouted by the Philadelphia Phillies baseball team-Twitty's notion of what it would take to be a star in the music business was as boldly brash as it was blissfully innocent.
Circa 70's
"I thought I'd be as big as Elvis in two or three weeks," he confessed years later. "I thought that was all it took-put a record out." As it turned out, after one false start (some 1956 recordings for Presley's alma mater, Sun, which went unreleased), and one fitful start (a few little heard 1957 singles for Mercury), Twitty joined MGM Records in 1958 and did become as big as Elvis-if only for two to three weeks. His feverish, Presley-channeling original "It's Only Make Believe" became a #1 pop hit that fall, and for a brief spell it made him something of a household name: he registered a handful of follow-up pop hits, appeared in several MGM-produced teen exploitation films, and it was his stage moniker that was parodied for the Elvis-like title character Conrad Birdie in the Broadway hit, Bye Bye Birdie.

01.09.33 to 05.06.93

By 1965, though, artists of Twitty's generation and background had all but disappeared from the pop charts. Let go by MGM, Twitty recorded a few unsuccessful singles for ABC before the aforementioned Bradley decided to take a chance on the faded rockabilly star-and primarly on the strength of the fact that Ray Price had recently scored a Top 10 country hit with a tune Twitty had written called "Walk Me To The Door." Success was not immediate: it took until 1968-just about a full ten years after "It's Only Make Believe"-for Conway Twitty to again claim a #1 slot on a music chart. But once he landed on the top branch of the country tree for the first time with the plaintive "Next In Line" (featuring one of the all-time great barroom-themed opening lines: "See her there at the table/Watch her tear at the label/From the bottle that she just drank dry"), Twitty stayed just about glued to that lofty perch, as he went on to become one of the genre's most popular and beloved performers for the remainder of his life. His influence cannot be underestimated, either: While he started out, as many an Elvis follower, by moving from the country music he grew up with to the blues-infused rockabilly pioneered by Presley in Memphis, Twitty's triumphant return to country made him, in turn, a pioneer to a significant number of aging rockabilly-ers-Elvis included-who were able to resurrect their careers as country artists. ~ [Artistdirect.com]

So I'm off to Chattanooga, TN tomorrow morning....at 3:30am. WHAT! I know. It's ridiculous....but totally worth what we're going for! It's Nana & Granpa's 50th wedding anniversary! (ben's grandparents!) They're having a 50's themed party (1958 specifically, I'm told...) and it's just a really special time so we decided to fly up for the weekend. I put together a totally fab outfit between my closet, goodwill, and target...don't worry, I'm photographing the event so there will be PLENTY of black mail images of me channeling I Love Lucy with red lips and all. YIKES! I'm so excited!

Congratulations to Nana & Granpa! 50 years may seem like a long time....but I'm sure it feels like just yesterday when they met. They have the coolest story. One day when I get all my facts right, I'll tell you all about it. Basically all you need to know is that I thank God for them everyday, seeing as I no longer have any grandparents. They replaced them for me....and are more amazing than I can attempt to explain. Love you guys!

So I will be out of commission until Monday, September 15th! I'll return all emails and calls at that time. Some posts to look foward to! Brian Headshots, Goodrich Day After Shoot, Voelker Day After Shoot, Aram Headshots, Hailey & John Year After Shoot, Erica & Joe, FREE TO SUCCEED w/ David Jay (totally inspiring!) and some personal posts from my 50's weekend, along with a very shoe inspired post...sounds ridiculous but ladies we all know how a great pair of pumps can change your life. Really.

Have a great weekend everyone! For now, here are some teasers of Aram and Hailey & John!

We are back at Ray's Corner, but doing it a little differently tonight.

We usually dig through tunes from my dad's collection, but tonight's tune -- one of mine -- popped up on shuffle play and struck me instantly as one he probably digs.

As our regular readers know, Ray's Corner is the apartment with the loud music, and the place where the martinis are made of gin with the vermouth bottle held about a foot away.

Tonight's loud music comes from sax great King Curtis, blasting away on a swinging instrumental of a tune done first in 1951 by Frank Sinatra and the Harry James Orchestra.

"Castle Rock" was written by Ervin Drake, Al Sears and Jimmy Shirl. Drake's web site insists it's the first rock 'n' roll song, with its lyric "I held her tight and rocked around the clock" coming three years before "Rock Around the Clock." (Good story if true. Most lyric transcriptions say "I held her tight and danced around the clock.")

Ain't no lyrics on this version, though.

<strike>"Castle Rock,"</strike> King Curtis, 1958, from "Atlantic Honkers," a 1986 compilation that's out of print. This two-record set also features Joe Morris, Tiny Grimes, Frank Culley, Willis Jackson, Jesse Stone and Arnett Cobb. Everyone shares an LP side except for the King, who gets one to himself.

The liner notes don't say who's bashing those mad drums midway through the song. We know only that the King recorded this one in New York on Dec. 3, 1958.

Kita lihat amalan negara-negara lain. Apakah negara lain juga menukar-nukar tarikh keramat negara mereka setiap kali penambahan negeri atau wilayah dicapai?

Kita ambil contoh Amerika Syarikat.

Kita ambil satu lagi contoh negera Vietnam.

Itulah tarikh baru sepatutnya. Itulah tarikh bermulanya persekutuan 13 buah negeri yang kekal hingga kini.

Kalau hanya sekadar memenangkan hati dua negeri baru yang menyertai persekutuan maka kita perlu cari pengertian baru untuk kita kenangkan tarikh penjajah akhirnya menyerah kuasa kepada rakyat tempatan selepas menjajah silih berganti semenjak 1511.

Non so perchè.

Qui i khazari.

E i nostri cervelli? Spesso ci diciamo: fin qui sì, oltre no. Oppure: attento a non spingerti troppo, potresti oltrepaasare i limiti!

Poi vengono i cani.
Ci siamo. Rieccoci con l'aprire, sganciare, tirar fuori, sventrare. Questo cos'è? E quello?

Neve, neve.
Siamo in gennaio, cuore dell'inverno siberiano.

Mosca.

By Malik Siraj Akbar

Balochistan is marking the second death anniversary of its former chief minister and governor, Nawab Mohammad Akbar Khan Bugti, today (Tuesday).

The actual causes of the death of the 79-year-old Baloch tribal elder are still shrouded in mystery but its relations between the Centre and the country's largest province continue to degenerate. The late Nawab, who also headed the Jamhoori Watan Party (JWP), a purely political organisation that had representation in the provincial legislature, the National Assembly and the Senate of Pakistan, was forced by security forces to take shelter in the mountains of Balochistan. Until his last breath, Bugti insisted that neither he nor his tribe had waged war against the State but had been merely defending themselves against a powerful army.

What is known is that Bugti was killed in the midst of intense clashes between security forces and the Bugti tribesmen. Though the government announced on television that Bugti had been killed in an open battle, it continued to change its version of the events. Initially, it was said that his death took place in an open battle between the security forces and tribesmen but later on they said he died when a cave collapsed. What was unexplained, however, was how his watch, sunglasses and ring remained intact in the collapse. As if to make matters worse, the government refused to hand over his body to his family. It is perhaps not surprising then that the already angry people in the province were incensed and separatist thought became more popular among the younger generation of the Baloch.

Bugti, born on July 12, 1927 in Barkhan, dominated the political scene in Balochistan for nearly six decades. He was educated at Oxford University UK and succeeded his father Nawab Mehrab Khan Bugti as the chief of the Bugti tribe. He was a staunch sub-nationalist who challenged the rule of Generals Ayub Khan and Pervez Musharraf. He was a member of the Shahi Jirga that voted for the accession of British Balochistan to the newly formed Pakistan in 1947. He was a member of the AGG Council for many years as well.

During the 1950s, Bugti lost against Dr Khan Sahib, the elder brother of Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan in the Constituent Assembly polls. He later joined the Republican Party and worked with Prime Minister Feroz Khan Noon as his minister of state for defence from September 20, 1958 until Ayub's coup in 1958. During the same period, he played a key role in the Pakistani government by securing the return of Gwadar from Oman on September 8, 1958.

Following the imposition of martial law in 1958, a military tribunal convicted Bugti of murdering his uncle, Haybat Khan, in 1960. He was disqualified from holding public office and was sent to Mach jail. His death sentence was, however, revoked in the coming days but despite this, he could not participate in the 1970 polls.

Bugti did not see eye-to-eye with Sardar Attaullah Mengal, the first-ever elected chief minister of Balochistan and a candidate of the National Awami Party (NAP). As the rift between Bugti and Mengal grew, Bugti went into self-exile to London until Mengal's dismissal from office on February 14, 1973. At this point, Bugti joined Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's government as the governor of Balochistan on February 15, 1973. He remained in office until January 1, 1974 when he resigned because of differences with Bhutto on the PM's Balochistan policies. But the nationalists led by Mengal and Khair Bux Marri never forgave him for siding with Bhutto even briefly.

In 1985, Bugti boycotted the Urdu language and only spoke Pakistan's regional languages and English. In the meantime, his son Saleem Akbar Bugti and son-in-law Mir Humayun Marri participated in the non-party based elections of 1988 and won. After these elections, Bugti was inducted as the chief minister of Balochistan on February 4, 1989. He was a candidate of the Balochistan National Alliance (BNA) and remained CM until August 6, 1990 when the provincial assembly was dissolved. At this point, he formed his own political party, the Jamhoori Watan Party (JWP), and in 1993, was elected to the National Assembly.

In the last years of his life, Bugti stopped participating in active politics and retreated to his tribal abode in Dera Bugti. However, he resurfaced in January 2005 when Bugti tribesmen fired several hundred rockets on gas installations, following the alleged gang rape of a Pakistan Petroleum Limited doctor, Shazia Khalid, by a captain of the Defence Security Guards (DSG).

With tensions mounting in Dera Bugti, the government deployed troops in his native area. The turning point came on March 17, 2005, when a clash between troops and Bugti tribesmen resulted in the death of 77 civilians, mostly Hindus. Since then, Bugti tribesmen have engaged in a guerrilla war with the security forces. The mistrust between the government and the Nawab also hindered the progress of the Parliamentary Committee, headed by Mushahid Hussain Syed, that was atte
